highlighted across the bay area. storm ranger tracking it this morning, and as we head to the north bay, we were seeing some of the snow showers up around parts of northern marin county, but you can see it over mt. tam right now. we head over to the east bay, mt. diablo, much of the tri-valley and some of the hills and also as you head over toward livermore, and just east of there in the hills. we're also seeing it in the peninsula for the santa cruz mountains, at some of the higher elevations from skyline boulevard to mt. uminum and we'll see the potential of more tdown, just east of santa cruz, east of morgan hill and also toward mt. hamilton. this is whking at. do you need to drive very slow in these conditions, if you are driving over those hills, but for the most part, a lot of the bay area seeing a wintry mix and rain. mike, how i a issues out

there? >> so far not related to the snow and the ice. we'll warn folks we have storm ranger up, showing why the white and the pinks there, where it's going to be definitely colder, the chance for ice on the roadway and even snow, if you're headed up to mount anything, and there's a sheriff there tell in you not to go up the road, don't. mt. hamilton where we more frequently get the snow in san jose there's always a spinout and they have to send another truck to get the person out. we have this on the radar that clears out. this patch of snow and ice, look at the pink here, watching the smaller roadways along the peninsula as well. in addition to watching the roads we hear about this early problem for ace, completely unrelated to the weather, as far as i know, but there is a derailment in stockton, not the ace train. it's' freight train. we don't have any commuter trains coming in on the ace rail right now. back to you. >> thanks, mike. the breaking news we're talking about the weather there, some places waking up to snow in the front yard. >> let's check in with "today in

the bay's" kris sanchez live at highway 17 at the summit. we saw it earlier, you setting up your live shot, coming down there, the little flurries. >> reporter: yes. it's a little scary to drive out in this wintry mix. the snow is coming down pretty good. it is lightening up. it is enough to accumulate on the ground. we have it on the hood of the truck. you can see it on the ground behind me and it is also on the roadway, and that's why the california highway patrol is pacing people in this area, getting in front of the traffic and making sure people are not driving too fast for these conditions, because it does come up on you pretty fast. we were pretty clear half way between san jose and here, the summit, where we are this morning, and then, bam! it just started falling, coming down pretty good. justthot within the last 15 minutes or so. it was a little heavier 15 minutes ago. it's starting to get a little bit lighter. at to be good for the conditions, because in

addition to making for slick roadway, it is a tremendous distraction. this is more snow than i saw when i was in new york city, and upstate new york for the holidays. this is a nice, little surprise but definitely we don't want it to be a rude awakening. make sure you give yourself enough time this morning. we have seen caltrans out here with snowplows. they must have had to borrow them from the sierra, because it's certainly something we don't see every day. caltrans will be out here all morning, the chp will be out here all morning. it is breezy. you see the snowflakes going sideways but what an exciting day as long as we're safe and careful. bring your mittens, scarves, a hat, it's chilly out here. >> you got to dig them out. thanks very much, kris. more on the new video we showed you at the top of the show here. this is that snow falling overnight in livermore wineries are. a lot of snow falling, even sticking to the ground. folks living up there tell us

that the road is icy, are rockslides in some spots so we need to warn you to be careful as you're out there. snow has been falling on mt. hamilton as well of course in south santa clara county, just east of san jose. the chp is not escorting cars up on mt. hamilton road. it's actually drive at your own risk. the road leading to the top of the mount tain is closed so don't even risk it. when you get to the top, it is covered with several feet of snow. now to:c contra costa count a lot of snow is falling on the top of mt. diablo. the snow acts as a magnet for people who want to take advantage of the snowfall. >> we have hey people who bring skis up, sleds up, snowboards up, pretty much anything you could imagine to slide on. >> we were here last week, total beautiful weather, 80 degrees, felsa week later it's had to bring her up to see it. >> some roads may be closed today so you may have to hike a bit to get to the thick part of

the snow. the park opens at 8:00 a.m. this morning. and not surprisingly, the roads to lake tahoe still closed. i-80 is closed from colfax to nevada state line, shut down at this hour in both directions. whiteout conditions there still estimated time for reopen, no estimated time there. nearly ten feet of snow in the past two days, and many resorts like squaw and kirkwood were closed yesterday. so if you're heading up there, be sure to check to make sure that they're open ahead of time. when we're not on the air, our nbc bay area app will keep you in the know. download it and get updates on when the snow, if you're on the higher elevations, will hit your neighborhood. oakland teachers inching closer to a strike, this after the union of avo indicating nea support of a strike. union leaders say 95% of teachers who voted approve of a strike. the union now plans to set a strike date before the end of

the month. teachers have been working without a contract for more than a year. the district issued a statement. it says in part "we believe that our teachers deserve a fair wage, and we are doing everything we can to find a solution. we will continue to advocate for more funding from the state and find a way to compensate our teachers fairly." 4:37 right now. the water district serving dublin and san ramon is changing how it elects its governing board. the district is transitioning from an at-large voting system to district based one which gives communities a bigger voice. they are holding four public meetings, the first is tonight at 6:00 at the el costa senior center in san ramon. coming up on "today in the bay," investors are focusing on google. the bold promises alphabet is making that could have a big impact on their wall street bottom line. if all the snow is making you wish for sunshine, the airlines are offering flights to a place what many call paradise.

headlines for this tuesday. wall street is set to open up. the market was up 175 yesterday led by the tech sector. stocks have benefited from the

federal reserve which last week signaled any future interest rate hikes are on hold until further notice. watch shares of alphabet. the parent company of fwoogle reported quarterly results that beat wall street forecasts but shares are down about 2.5% on worries about how much it's spend spending on video content, employees and facilities, and investors are questioning whether all the new spending on businesses like artificial intelligence and self-driving cars will generate the same returns as google's core internet search business. southwest airlines and the faa are scrambling to finish work that would allow the airline to start offering service ben california to hawaii, possibly as soon as april. southwest will make its first flight from oakland to honolulu. there will not be any passengers on board. the faa has to certify southwest to operate those long over water flights before it can start selling tickets, and the government shutdown interfered

live pictures from interstate 80 at in soda springs. welcome back. right now you're watching "today in the bay" at 4:46. look at these live pictures from interstate 80 and soda springs. good luck making it to that spot. interstate 80 closed from applegate to the nevada state line. look at all that. whiteout conditions. >> in both directions. i have friends in tahoe. >> they haven't come back up. >> right. they're stuck up there right now. >> tough situation there. is that snow going to continue? >> it's going to taper off earl because they still have we are taking a look at a live view of san francisco. rain drops on the camera lens. let's go back from now through friday, all of the rain that we've measured, and i've been tallying it up. we are almost at ten inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains, and the reason why a lot of our reservoirs are full or nearing capacity, and in morgan hill, close to four and a

half or a little bit more than four and a half inches of rain. san jose had 2.25 and in dublin, almost three inches of rain there, we're nearing four inches of rain in belmont and san francisco, almost two and a half inches of rain. looking live in dublin this morning, as you get ready to head out, roads are slick. we've had quite a bit of rain, looking at a lot of our locations in the east bay, measuring about an inch and a half, in the north bay, san ches, so now as we get a chance to dry out in some spots, we do still have some scattered showers and we've even been talking about the snow in the higher elevations like mt. tam. we can see the snow coming down. where we see the blues and the whites, that indicates snow, and then the pink indicates a wintry mix. the blue is rain, or the green is rain rather, as we see that over mt. tam valley, and then looking over toward the east bay, we are seeing some snow

coming down for some of our higher elevations on the diablo range and heading down just to the west of 680, but that may also affect your drive going on 580 in dublin, as we've seen a wintry mix there, and also for the tri-valley, as you go up just east of livermore, we're seeing some snow on the altamont pass, so looking at a lot of spots dealing with the wintry mix and snow. also on skyline boulevard, and the santa cruz summit we are going to see some light snow continuing there, and also around there swing and our temperatures are in the upper 30s and low 40s. of course, if you go up about lots of layers.eemare droppinge some of the things that you don't normally wear and got a hat and gloves, so of course to match my dress today. a good idea to make sure you're dressed for the very cold temperatures. all of this will be tapering off over the next couple of hours. by 9:00, 10:00, everything is

clearing out. we'll have a couple of days of dry conditions, also some cold air, we'll be dealing with freezing temperatures for the next couple of mornings and rain returns for the weekend, and mike, you are taking us out there, you have a lot of colors on the map. >> we don't usually show the colors on my map. you'll see the white and pink on kari's talking about snow and ice. we don't just have the little tiny patch around mt. hamilton. we have much more extensive pinkish white here and the darker pink where there may be more ice. watch the smaller roadways before the sun comes up around the bay. over here where it's got a little flooding icon off of 580, it's actual w snow icon. we have a log there from chp saying there may be as much as a couple inches of snow overni 580 because of the traffic flow. that issen issue this morning. the roadways are moving in the green sensor area. that means a great flow of traffic except for highway 35

through sky line and highway 84. yesterday morning you heard about the mudslide and the crash and it reopened after about an hour and a half of closure but later on in the day it closed once again. it's closed for this section between 68d0 and mission. you see the snow registering on the index, be careful out there. the train is held for ace in stockton, there's a freight train derailment, it's not a passenger train having a problem but it is causing a problem for those trains. >> thanks, mike. the conditions from the storm not just problematic for drivers and people in higher elevations. about flooding. uvas rising under the bridge nea no imminent flood risk. the water flow is decreasing. as trampoline parks soar? popularity, so do the number of people getting hurt. >> investigative reporter liz

wagner dug through medical calls from local trampoline parks and found some of the injuries could be pretty serious. >> that's right. and most of them involve kids. we obtained these printouts of ambulance calls from bay area counties and we want to show you some of them. a 9-year-old jumped and dislocated an elbow. a teenager was doing a backflip and landed on his neck, and an his ankle. we found 37 911 calls for injuries at a dozen trampoline parks last year,f tthe numbers parents who drove their kids to emergency rooms with broken bones. a pediatric surgeon at connecticut children's medical center, analyzed trampoline park accidents over five years starting in 2010 and found an 1,100% spike in er visits across the country. the industry is growing fast, which may explain the sharp rise in injuries but the international association of trampoline pre s actually lower

is rejoicing that their loved ones were found alive. how crews say that they managed to survive the elements. but first, happening now, a busy southern california highway is back open following a massive mudslide, it happened last night near the city of julian in san diego county. luckily no one was hurt in the slide but it did take crews a couple hours to clear that road and reopen it to traffic. a lot more news. stick around. 4:53.

and warm this morning after they went missing in the snow-covered mendocino forest in glen county. here is when her father heard from his daughter for the first time in days. >> i miss you so much. i love you so much. >> tears of relief and joy there. his 18-year-old daughter, maya herman katami and her 21-year-old boyfriend carlos hernandez, jr., were reported missing saturday. they say their jeep got stuck and buried in the snow. volunteers and glen county sheriff's deputies found the couple two days later. here is maya's father once again. >> it looked like they just got out of a real tight spot. >> rescuers had to brave dangerous donz find them b dangerous continues to find them. both are safe and should be back home in san francisco soon. coming up here on "today in the bay," we are issuing a microclimate weather alert as we

we're seeing quite a bit of re we head to the north bay where we've seen a mix of some snow and rain, in the mt. tam area. where we see the white, that is snow. pink is the wintry mix and of course the green is rain we're used to seeing but it's such a colorful radar, we have to sort it all out for you, as we are also seeing some of that moving through parts of the east bay, east of danville, around mt. diablo and the altamont pass and headed toward the santa cruz mountains mostly scattered rain now and seen snow coming down in some of our higher elevations, right there
