up and down the mount this morning.it is a very diffie know in the rain, and with this kind of wintry mix, folks who live up in the mountains say they can be really dangerous. >> we have a lot of accidents up here. we see them every day with the restaurant. you know, somebody driving too fast, not slowing down and they spin out and cause the accidents. >> reporter: so the snow has pretty much let up at this point here, where we are. kari said that it is still going to be off and on through the morning but now it's just really cold. the roadway is wet, and so we are watching for any chance of black ice. you won't see it until you hite give yourself some safe stopping distance, and also make sure that you are minding the speeds for the conditions. otherwise, a very nice morning, if you have pictures of the snow, where you are, make sure you tag us in your pictures. we'd love to see them as well because it certainly is a special day. in santa cruz mountains, kris

sanchez, "today in the bay." >> it sure is. all that snow is expected to draw some crowds to bay area peaks today. >> pete suratos is live in mt. diablo. how are things looking there? >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, marcus and laura. as you can see behind me, no snow where we're at, stuck at the base of the mountain at mt. diablo. the road is closed. the park opens at 8:00 a.m. so a much different scene than what kris is seeing at the santa cruz mountains. there is snow up there in the mountains, way up there. i want to show you video from overnight, when that snow was coming down, of course, as snow, brings a lot of people who come out to check out the snow to take in that experience of the winter snowfall in the area in mt. diablo. here's what they were saying yesterday, guys. >> we've had people bring skis up, sleds up, >> we were here last week, total, beautiful weather, 80 degrees, felt like awesome, and less than a week later it's snowing, so we had to bring her up to see it.
5:05 am
>> reporter: definitely the opposite of 80 degrees there, and we're showing you guys some video, the sound of hail at tilden regional park and the sleet bouncing off the asphalt back on to mt. diablo. you have to head high to get to the snow but the park behind me opens at 8:00 a.m. we're live here at mt. diablo, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks a lot, pete. it's really beautiful to look at when you see it. >> isn't it, though? in fact, look at our radar right here, kind of gives you that, you know, idea of where the snow is. we see the rain, but some of the white parts you see down off of looks like hollister toward los spanos, so cold, we're seeing some snow in those parts? >> we are seeing some snow. you have to go up in some elevation above 1,000 feet before we really s i changing over to snow, but slick road conditions as we track it with storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar. this is part of a larger system

through the tri-valley, the hills, just above livermore, and also going through the north, some of the mountains near the diablo range, seeing some snow coming down and then we are seeing some rain around oakland, san leandro, and also down to about hayward, and then as you head down to mt. hamilton, and also as you go up in elevations just east of san jose, we're seeing some snow. so here is what to expect, rain/snow mix coming down in some spots down to sea level especially in the north bay, and then as we head out this morning, you just make sure you drive slower, leave room for bre braking and try to get the best traction. a lot of this will end after sunrise. as we head over to mike, oakland is a little blurry. >> this is what it looks like when i wake up, have to rub the sleep out of my eyes, the camera is showing blur because the water is kicking off the roadway. you'll have slick roadways, overnight rain is all rain. taking you out to the maps, we

scattered showers, some areas are seeing some very heavy snow. where you start to see blue, that indicates some pretty heavy snow, but most of it has been white, indicating lighter snow and you see the pink shades, that's the transition of a wintry mix from snow to rain, and of course that green is rain. so let's go around the bay area, and see that it is snowing right now in the oakland hills, and then also as you head down toward castro valley, and seeing possibly a wintry mix on 580 right now. as we get a closer look, we can see where it changes over near the oakland zoo. so as you head up in the hills, we are going to see a lot more of that snow coming down there as well as rain. san leandro getting in on some wet weather, and then we head to the santa cruz mountains, highway 35 is looking like still very heavy snow at this point. it's been off and on there, and then also for mt. uminum and also the summit, highway 17 getting some snow right now. we've seen it off and on, and

that's the nature of what we will see throughout the day, even on mt. hamilton, as we get the last little push of this moving through. so if you do have to drive this morning, the rain and snow may mix down to sea level in spots and just make sure you allow some extra room, and go slower for best traction. most of this will be ending after sunrise. heading over to mike, you're seeing that also on the roads, and breaking news as well for the rails. >> that's right. first we'll start with the rails. the conditions are an issue. train number one in case you hadn't heard was canceled this morning. they were not able to leave the stockton area because of a freight train that had a derailment. i don't know how severe the derailment was. it was not the passenger train, so we're not talking about injuries for folks on ace train. they can't ride here in the bay area and closer to san jose, train number three may start, with he'll see. meanwhile looking at the snow and the ice, the pink and the white. the conditions kari showed you

them around the bay and we showed you video. watch 84 through livermore, 580 reported a lot of snow out of the altamont. back to you. >> we've been talking about the snow. some places waking up to a lot of snow. >> we check in with kris sanchez, she's at highway 17 and look at it come down there. >> reporter: i feel like i'm in tahoe, laura. i might have to borrow your skis at a certain point. the snow is coming down, big, fluffy snowflakes are accumulating, you can see it on the ground behind me. i wouldn't say there's a tremendous amount, but certainly enough on the roadway to make it a little bitlippery outhere. we have seen california highway patrol escorting people, they do that pacing. mike's explained that before etnriving we've seen snowplows and a slow enough for the caltrans truck dropping salt along the roadways. obviously we're aware this could be a situation where we could see black ice. this is a beautiful sight. if you head out there this morning and trying to get the kids out to take a picture in
5:33 am
the snow, make sure you are very, very safe and if the california highway patrol or caltrans tells you not to go, then you probably shouldn't, and the wind just shifted, you see that, snow pelted, you can see the accumulation here. this is not what we expect to be reporting here in the bay area but it certainly is a fun morning for us. do be safe out there, folks, because you know, folks just like to drive fast and we should definitely slow down. all right, laura, i need your scarf. i need your tahoe stuff. >> i have snowshoes and the works. do you, you do. you look like you're reporting from tahoe. >> reporter: the producers must love this, just started blowing this way. >> good tv is what we call it. stay warm out there. >> reporter: see you in a half hour. >> it is kind of exciting. a lot of people will try to head up there but as kris said be very careful. we see accidents on 17 all the time. so they're saying the south bay could see some flurries over the next couple of hours, not just at some of the higher elevations. it will be interesting to see if
5:34 am
it makes it to the valley floor. it lass to stay pretty cold. >> we sent bob redell there live in morgan hill for us. bob, your view is a lot different from kris' this morning. >> reporter: but it's still -- you can see my breath, still cold down here but yes, we don't have the snow yet. we have a little bit of break in the weather in morgan hill but our team of meteorologists at nbc bay area do believe it is possible within the next 90 minutes or so between now and 7:00 this morning that there is a chance we could see a mix of rain and snow here at sea level. places like morgan hill, gilroy, up north through san jose, and palo alto, and if we get snow, the prediction would be flurries, probably not something sticking to the ground but seen at sea level that would be highly unusual. some other video we want to show you from within the past 18 hours here in morgan hill, this is from nbc bay area sky ranger, the uvas reservoir is full with the water overflowing the spillway and filling creeks

here so we have the traffic and the slicker roadways to contend with. on top of that, this is what we're talking about, the snow and potentially some icy roads on the smaller sections, smaller roadways, as you get up toward mt. diablo and through the san jose hills and watch out for mt. hamilton, watching mt. uminum, mt. tam, lots of snow and ice. monterey, chp report they have a report for snow instead of roadway flooding, they have a report for snow. >> we're seeing it there. >> it's talking about accumulation on kris' hood. >> let's look at it in fact right now. you think it's highway 80 leading up to tahoe but that's 17. we're seeing a lot of snow falling in the santa cruz mountains. snow plays in the area. there you go. >> chp escorts. >> yes, so take it easy if you're headed up that way, for the folks coming down. that's already a slippery slope, but kind of exciting sight to see in the higher elevations of the bay area.

on nbc bay area tonight as well for the state of the union. see you there. >> thanks, scott. taking a look right here at the radar, rain and even snow in parts of the bay area. this has been something a lot of people are waking up to, dealing with this morning, even causing some road closures out there throughout the bay and leading up to tahoe. right now meteorologist kari hall has been tracking all of this for us and it's going to stick around for a bit. >> next few hours. you don't have to go to tahoe to see snow this time. it is so close by and hoiflly y hopefully you don't have to drive through it. let's talk about how much rain we've measured going through the bay area since friday. in the vsanta cruz mountains nearly ten inches of rain, that's where it's snowing right now. in morgan hill over four and a half inches of rain and in san jose 2.25 inches of rain, and dublin almost three inches, over three inches in belmont, and san francisco nearly at 2.5 inches of rain, as we look at some more
5:48 am
few areas tals measuring over inches.kland, check out san anselmo, over four inches of rain, almost five there, so it really was a lot, and now we're winding this storm down with some cold air blasting in, and changing some of that rain over to a wintry mix. we're tracking it with storm ranger, as we get a closer look at some of the spots like mt. tam, that earlier had some snow coming down. now that has since moved on, but then we head over toward the east bay, where you're seeing some snow coming through just in the hills above livermore, and then also in parts of the east bay, check that out, as you drive on 580, between castro valley and dublin, looks like there could be some snow or a wintry mix there, coming down to the surface. and then for the hills, moving through the sunol grade, some snow and also for parts of the santa cruz mountains through the peninsula, pink indicates a wintry mix, and then the white, the snow. the green is the rain.
5:49 am
so we are going toor of that as we go into the rest of the morning and some really heavy snow for the santa cruz mountains as the storm winds up and blows through with some chilly temperatures, most of us in the upper 30s and low 40s as you get ready to head out the door. we'll see activity tapering off throughout the rest of the day with sunshine and some chilly temperatures by tomorrow morning, it could be freezing in the valleys and may be slippery as well. temperatures only reaching the low 50s and more rain coming back in time for the weekend. mike, you have another update for the ace train? >> i do. unfortunately it's not a great one. we have no trains running. this is not a change if the general sense. ace train number one was canceled, train number three held in stockton. there was a freight train derailment overnight and why the trains are not able to get past that and in toward the rest of the commute. so right now, ace train reports, ace trail reports no trains are travelhrou t the area.y,

you are going to hit a bottleneck as well, talking about the delay right here coming off of 580 and 205 and in toward the altamont pass, out tracy, there is about a ten-minute delay right now because of the slower drive, and kari talked about the snow, keep that in mind, the roadways are open but the snow is an issue and distraction for a lot of folks. let's get back to our other maps and the traffic flow through the area, pretty standard with your backup out of the altamont. actually the dublin interchange looks great but this pink is icy, possible icy conditions, and the white is where there's still some snow deposited across the mountaintops as the sun comes up, folks will be distracted by that as well. and reminder, yesterday we did have the closure for 84, and then it reopened during about this time of the show, it closed again yesterday afternoon, so you can't get through the area and notice the windy roadway as well as the snow and ice reported in the area. that's just a tough drive, if it was open, but it's not, goois.
