year's historic meeting between the two leaders. a rising democratic star delivered the party's rebuttal. stacey abrams, who narrowly lost her bid to become the first black georgia governor became the first black woman to ever deliver a state of the union response. during her speech in atlanta, she blamed the president for the longest government shutdown in the nation's history. >> making livelihoods of our federal workers a pawn for political games is a disgrace. the shutdown was a stunt engineered by the president of the united states, one that defied every tenet of fairness and abandoned not just our people but our values. >> abrams didn't linger on the criticism, though. at the end of her speech, she even echoed mr. trump's calls for unity. >> so even as i am very disappointed by the president's approach to our problems, i still don't want him to fail. but we need him to tell the truth and to respect his duties

and respect the extraordinary diversity that defines america. >> abrams is not expected to stay out of the national spotlight for long. some democratic leaders are already pushing her to challenge georgia senator david perdue in 2020. on capitol hill, there is a shortage of reaction to the president's state of the union. house speaker nancy pelosi gave her take on twitter, saying it will take days to fact check all the misrepresentations the president made during the speech. in a tweet from the other side of the aisle, vice president pence dubbed the address an inspiring vision of american greatness. nbc's tracie potts join is live now from d.c. with more reaction to the president's speech. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, there's reaction from hollywood to washington and some of it focusing this morning on nancy pelosi and the eye roll she gave the president sitting right behind him when he talked about ridiculous partisan investigations. on the other side, republicans applauding the president, especially on the economy and

immigration. >> i thought it was a very strong speech. the president started off with just laying out the incredible successes we've seen in the past two years, the economic successes. the lowest unemployment in half a century. >> most of the speech was pretty disappointing, but there were moments. i do think that the nod to criminal justice reform is one avenue where we can really come together and advance our common cause. i also think that there is a great possibility for us to build and create jobs with mass infrastructure investment. >> reporter: now, we also heard from 2020 presidential candidates who were at the speech last night, like senator cory booker, who tweeted that it takes more than a nod at unity at the top of a speech to bring our country together. he went on to talk about president trump spending the last two years driving lawmakers and the country apart. then there was kamala harris, who tweeted, politicians should not knell women what to do with

their bodies, referring to what the white house said would be strong language from president trump on abortion. and then of course there were the women in white, the democrats, females, many of them who just came to washington. they gave thunderous applause when the president talked about women going back to work. frances. >> really a strong moment right there. tracie potts for us, thank you. president trump is also calling to lower prescription drug prices. during the state of the union, he called the fight against rising health care costs his next major priority. but how will the administration make good on that promise? nbc's anne thompson sat down with the health and human services secretary to find out. >> reporter: fed up with rising drug prices, american patients traveling to mexico to buy insulin for less. this mother says her son rationed his medication to save money and died. >> i lost him because of pharmaceutical greed. >> reporter: the administration pledging to lower prices,

leading the charge, secretary alex azar, a former drug company executive now heading health and human services. isn't having a pharmaceutical company executive in charge of lowering drug prices a bit like having the fox guarding the hen house? >> this is a completely nontransparent system that we are bringing transparency to and light to. these rebates, these kickbacks that drug companies pay to middlemen, we are making the biggest transformation in how drugs are priced in america in history. >> reporter: those middlemen and kickbacks played crucial roles in how rightow drug company sets a list price. then middlemen working for insurance companies negotiate rebates to lower the price by an average of 30%. but those middlemen take a cut of the savings. now the administration wants those savings to go directly to you. insurers and middlemen say you're targeting the wrong people. you should start with the drugmakers. >> we're not targeting anyone.

what we're targeting is bringing real savings to patients when they walk into the pharmacy. >> reporter: azar acknowledges insurance premiums will go up. isn't that countereffective? >> for most seniors, the savings they will get at the pharmacy will be so big, they will outweigh even a small increase in potential premiums. >> reporter: the secretary says the savings will start next january for medicare and medicaid recipients, a dramatic change he hopes the entire industry will embrace. anne thompson, nbc news, washington. police in illinois are investigating a series of highway shootings leaving a woman dead and three people wounded. they happened monday along i-57 in the chicago area just eight miles apart. in one incident, a postal worker was killed on her way to work when someone in another car opened fire. in another, a man was critically wounded and two boys,italed. police are asking anyone who witnessed either shooting to come forward with information. now to another scandal

rocking the catholic church. for the first time, pope francis acknowledged the sexualbuse nuns by priests and bishops, saying some have even been held in sexual slavery. the pope spoke with reporters on his flight back from his trip to the arabian peninsula and pledged to do more to stop the abuse. police are investigating on the side of a pennsylvania highway a tractor-trailer barreling down the road had to make a split second decision to avoid a catastrophic accident. the tractor-trailer was just inches away from hitting the police cruiser parked on the shoulder. no reports as to whether the driver was injured. police have been looking into a possible road rage death the night before. all right. it is wednesday. good morning, bill karins. >> good morning. we've got some thunderstorms, flood watches. winter weaver advisories, ice storm warnings that will be expiring this morning. this is actually two storms. we're going to focus on the

not have an official host after comedian kevin hart stepped down. they did, however, tease big plans for an opening. leading the news on this wednesday, a murder mystery unfolding in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the country after a body was found stuffed in a suitcase and left on the side of the road in greenwich, connecticut. stephanie gosk has more on this gruesome discovery. >> reporter: the body was found stuffed in a suitcase on the side of this road in the upscale new york city suburb of greenwich, connecticut. highway workers making the gruesome discovery. >> we have no doubt that there was a homicide involved. >> reporter: the victim, a woman believed to be between 18 and 30 years old. she was fully clothed, bound at the hands and feet. police say they don't know who she is, how she died, or when, though they do have some leads on her identity. >> our focus right now is obtaining that identification of the victim so that a proper notification can be done to the next of kin.
