cure, or concrete cure, i should say. a smoother drive on the two lanes that are open, but the two lanes that are closed are causing the big backup. let' show you on the map, we talk about hopefully at 6:30 a reopen for the lanes. they've been closed and having problems since yesterday afternoon and the official project itself started last night just after 11:00 and jams off of the nimitz, half of the approach toward the san mateo bridge toll plaza is open. jump on past industrial that's fine but not many folks who do that. use tennison to get past the backup. coming through san leandro that's the worst of the back yum. if you're south of the san mateo bridge, head over to the dumbarton bridge which is more popular now. the rest of the bay we're looking all right. the bay bridge metering lights of course are on. we'll follow 92 closely. back to you. >> thanks, mike. on capitol hill a call for unity. lawmakers and the nation are reacting this morning to president trump's state of the union address last night. he told democrats and republicans, let's work together to get things done. lower 50s today, and we will get some mostly sunny skies, so after this cold start, here is a look at our highs today, reaching only into the low 50s and with a breeze, it may feel a little bit cooler. we'll have a couple of days of weather like this, and then the rain returns, so i'll have more on that in a few minutes. and mike, you still have that alert for the san mateo bridge. >> i still have the same shot, kari, because really we're just waiting for this concrete to cure for it to finish curing and be in a condition where we can drive across it. cal trans on the crew behind me. bob redell no update on when they expect it to be open. they are hoping for of:30. this is the impact, the construction you saw or the repair work is right about here between hesperian and industrial, westbound jams up coming off of that nimitz freeway as things are getting really tough right now. folks coming out of hayward to san leandro, and out of the east shore freeway, out of the east bay, a tough drive out of contra costa as well. that is the single problem we
6:10 am
have. although our friend francis at the station called in as he was driving south on 680, not in the chp report but saying there say boulder in the roadway. sometimes they talk about a smaller rock. it may be up to a couple feet across in lanes. that's a warning for 680, we just got that in. we'll track that and slowing and possibly a traffic break. i'll update you as more reports come in. the rest of the bay looking smooth. guys, back to you. >> thanks a lot, mike. still ahead, theme parks and supermodels. will that work? i don't know. the idea from tyra banks that has people talking this morning. the president, of course, delivering his state of the union. he stated several business facts. we'll fact check him, coming up. and later, what happens when your flight lands at sfo instead of sjc? who covers that ride back home? at 6:25, our consumer team investigates. you're watching "today in the bay." this is not a bed.

6:15 am
about-facetime that lets people listen in. the two congressmen were concerned how much time elapsed between when apple learned about the program and when it announced the problem existed. president trump of course spoke last night. you heard our tracie potts talk about that. i'll take my own look in 30 minutes when we talk politics. from a business standpoint, there was one segment that popped out. >> the u.s. economy is growing almost twice as fast today as when i took office, and we are hottest economy anywhere in the world, not even close. >> it depends whether you talk quarters or yearly growth, he wasn't specific but if we consider it quarters that rate is true because he said almost. the president did talk about tariffs and you know he often confuses who pays tariffs on chinese goods. last night, he did not make the mistake of saying it was the
6:16 am
chinese, and for that, he was accurate as well. i mentioned electronic arts off the top of the segment. i know what you're thinking. hey, that's fortnite. ea doesn't make that. good catch. the company reported profits yesterday and it said fortnite is hurting profits. fortnite is free and fewer people are spending $60 to $70 on ea video games. we were talking earlier, even netflix blamed fortnite for problems because you can only do one thing at a time, play a video game or watch a movie and a lot of people are playing fortnite. >> with netflix, movie sales are probably down, too. >> that's right. >> all trickle. >> thanks, scott. what do you think of this, new this morning from the runway to the theme park. model mogul tyra banks announcing plans to open her own amusement park called modelland. the 45-year-old says the park is set to open later this year. it's expected to be located in san ma monica in southern california. the park will feature retail shops, restaurants and interactive entertainment.
6:17 am
by the way, modelland was also the name of a book that she wrote about her life. i'm curious what they're going to serve in the restaurants, though. >> kale. >> nothing. >> celery. >> there will not be -- no restaurants. just water. >> tyra banks used to talk about i eat barbecued chicken and beans, and da, da, da, it was like one rib. give me a slab. >> that will be interesting see. all right, also interesting is all the snow that we've had around the bay area and the cold temperatures that we have right now, and i love the pictures that i got from everyone yesterday. this one came from lisa unruh, sent me the picture on facebook of the view of snow from her window of the mt. hamilton hills. it looks gorgeous. post your pictures as well, any time you see some weather happening. i'm meteorologist kari hall oor or @karihallweather on all social media.
6:18 am
temperatures right now is just cold and below freezing for some of our inland valleys. we're seeing that all across the north bay, temperatures below 32 degrees. we're also freezing in livermore, and san martin, and palo alto right now 36. so watch out for those icy spots on the roads, especially for those elevated bridges and overpasses, and brentwood it will be about 35 degrees at 7:00, and then reaching into the low 50s today, so it will get a little bit warmer than yesterday, but not by much. and we do have a couple more days of some dry weather before the next storm system arrives. this one still developing out in the pacific, and making its way closer, so as we time it out for you, i know you're trying to make some weekend plans, we are going to see showers move in friday morning into the north bay and for the higher elevations in the north bay, could start out as some snow. so this one will be off and on with the rain for the bay area, continuing throughout the weekend, and then it will gradually taper off on sunday, as some more cold air moves in, and we're going to at times
6:19 am
measure quite a bit of rain. as we look at the sierra, they're going to get some more snow and look at the temperatures with a live view the squaw creek, gorgeous and coated in the snow and the lights there on the trees, but i wanted to give you an update on the sierra snowpack. right now we're at 125% of average, all across the sierra, so really good with those hefty storms that moved through and there's a lot more on the way. i'll keep you up to date on that, as we look at our temperatures for the inland areas, freezing again tomorrow morning, in fact, it may be colder than this morning, and we're going to see some more rain in the forecast, starting from friday off and on throughout your weekend. mike, you're taking us back to that alert for the san mateo bridge. >> i am, kari, because this keeps getting worse as far as the volume of traffic headed toward two lanes closed. half your freeway for west 92 we continue to watch, this the concrete curing and can't clear that until it's ready to handle the traffic. now bob redell is at the scene as well.
6:20 am
he'll get us the latest and we'll check in with him as well and look at the map. what's the problem that it's causing here as far as the backup? traffic is jamming up west 92, the turnaround right here, coming over the overcrossing at hess pearian to get you a reference we'll zoom the picture out. things jam up at hesperian coming off of 880 and san leandro making that bend because you're down two lanes. once you get past industrial, you're okay, over toward the san mateo bridge toll plaza and in kt f fact that keeps the san mateo bridge westbound commute lighter. toward the dumbarton bridge the volume is building. there is a crash around alvarado niles on the shoulder, but that will be a distraction and more folks are headed toward the dumbarton bridge bridge toll plaza as well. ac transit likely getting a little delay, probably ten minutes if you expect the lines going across the san mateo bridge. we had that rock, the boulder reported south 680. our friend francis told us as you go past the sunol exit he saw that in lanes but no update from the chp so we're scanning that but francis knows what he
6:21 am
saw and what he avoided. the south bay we're just starting to get that traffic build northbound and that's standard, no problems for south county or the santa cruz mountains. we saw a lot of slowing for 101 for that first burst but it's now sorted itself out and we'll see that build starting up again about 6:30, you already see a good number of cars here and mass transit, we're looking at a smooth drive. we told you about the potential for delays. ac transit lines across the san mateo bridge because of that, continue pothole repair work. we hope it's open by 6:30 but like i said we'll check in with bob. also ahead at 6:30, the financial crisis for oakland schools, the update we expect today, and the new support for teachers planning to strike. but first -- different airport, so who is on the hook for getting them to where they were actually going in the first place? i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, "nbc bay area responds," next. and during black history month, i'm sharing a lot of facts on my facebook page at

6:31 am
afternoon, with all of our microclimates seeing highs in the lower 50s. we'll talk more about what's ahead, as we see more freezing temperatures, and then some rain coming up, and mike takes us back to that traffic alert. really the main issue. >> it is the main issue. it's only one issue but it's affecting a few bridges. the bay bridge we've seen a standard buildup and the east shore freeway looks fine but coming up the nimitz, we may have an issue because of the problem, the traffic alert near the san mateo bridge. we're showing the rest of the bay and no big surprises as far as the volume of traffic, but it is over here, a choice between 92 and 84. you may want to choose 84. the dumbarton bridge this morning, if you can, because of the problem over here for west 92, we're continuing to follow the jam of the build for the volume of traffic out of san leandro, headed down toward this transition and 880, the nimitz freeway which jams up toward pice perrian where we lose two lanes. this is an evolving situation with overnight work. i'll head it back to you because you have the latest. >> the commute alert for all of you out there as mike was just
6:32 am
talking about, we need you to know about this before you head out the door. >> two lanes of westbound 92 just before the san mateo hayward bridge are closed due to emergency road repairs. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live with some of the repairs that literally are out there, you can see them and what they have to deal with. bob? >> marcus and laura, they hope to have this open in the text 10 to 15 minutes. i'll put it this way, a hole in the road that went do you the deck of the bridge here, this is westbound 92, just at industrial. this was caused yesterday afternoon in part because of the weather and because the wear and tear on the road. it went down to the rebar so cal trans came out here last night, shut down the road and had to repair it. the issue is waiting for concrete to cure. it's cured and they are trying to take the forms out and bolts and once they get the cones out, they'll have this reopened. this is what the backup looked
6:33 am
like about an hour and a half ago. this is as you are headed westbound on 92 coming off 880, the backup starts clearly well before hesperian, so if you are coming out here this morning, again, the number three and four lanes, two right lanes westbound 92 still shut down while cal trans tries to finish up this emergency road repair which they should be finished in the next 20to 15 minutes. reporting live here in hayward, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right, bob, a lot going on there. thanks for the update for us. 6:33. happening today at 10:00 a.m., oakland district leaders are supposed to give an update on the financial crisis, bringing contract negotiations to a standstill. last month, board members approved closing a middle school, suggesting more closures may be coming. and the district has previously talked about being millions of dollars in the red, while battling declining enrollment. last night in oakland city council members voted unanimously to support teachers if they choose to strike.
6:34 am
ahead of the vote, teachers held a rally outside city hall. they've been working without a contract for more than a year and seeking a 12% raise over three years along with smaller class sizes. >> the teachers, all the educators in oakland are prepared to do whatever is necessary to fight for what students need. >> teachers voted to authorize a strike but no date is set. the earliest it could happen is february 15th, following the release of a state-sponsored assessment. new this morning, how are you feeling about the 2020 election? how about the cost of living here in our golden state. >> a new nonpart son released in a half hour asked californians about those issues and a lot more. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live for us in san jose with some of those results that might surprise you. kris? >> reporter: hi there, marcus and laura. a lot of californians polled by quinnipiac said they're crushed by the cost of living in california and most agree the state is in the middle of a housing crisis.
6:35 am
i want to walk you through some of the highlights released in the last hour and a half or so. this is a poll of 912 self-identified registered voters, so it is a small sample size but at this point 43% say they can't afford to live here, particularly true for voters up to the age of 34, so our millenials. 77% say the state has a housing crisis. 54% say legal pot has been good for the state. 64% oppose that border wall that we heard about during the state of the union address once again last night, though republicans who as you likely know, are a political minority here in california, do support it overwhelmingly. 76% of californians polled say that immigration is good for the country, and most support a path to citizenship, but an interesting note here about a third say the state overreaches in helping undocumented immigrants. the pollsters found likely california voters are excited about the presidential candidacy
6:36 am
of senator kamala harris, but almost equally excited by the prospect of a joe biden run. the former vice president of course at this point is not a candidate. i've been posting more of these results in my twitter feed and also on my facebook page. some of you asked about the methodology, so i did put a link to that, so that you can see how that poll was done by quinnipiac university. again, small sample size, 912 likely california voters but at least a little temperature gauge as we look forward to 2020, and the rest of our future. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thanks. 6:36 right now. new this morning, a san jose office building near santa na rw has been sold. century plaza is located on winchester boulevard near interstate 280. "the mercury news" reporting it sold for $64 million. no word on whether the new owners plan to alter the property or if they may be eyeing new tenants. >> 6:36 right now. new this morning, revealing find when it comes to air pollution. people living in l.a. county are

getting to the coldest point of the morning. sunnyvale starts out with some upper 30s. by 10:00, we're at 43 degrees so a nice little warmup but we're still going to be cooler than normal, despite the sunshine. we'll talk about freezing temperatures tonight, and more rain on the way, coming up in less than five minutes. and we are looking at a crew doing more grinding work. they have to make sure none of that rebar is sticking up out of the roadway, while they repair the roadway, so that's going on west 92. that's a dangerous situation. slow for that crew, but i'll show you how much slowing you have. >> thanks so much, kari and mike. 6:4 right now. a live look at sfpd headquarters where later today we are expecting what may be a big announcement on a long cold serial killer case. here is a sketch of the man that police call the doodler. he struck in 1974 and 1975. 14 gay men were stabbed to death, their bodies found
6:44 am
scattered across the city. police named that killer the doodler because he would sketch or doodle his victims before their sexual encounters. one long time gay activist explains at the time the killings didn't get a lot of press. >> we're very reluctant to cover what was happening in the gay community at that time, and when that coverage did occur, it was often very lurid, very sensational and not particularly helpful. >> there is talk today's announcement may have to do with new dna evidence, but we don't know what police will say. the announcement is set for 2:00 p.m. we'll of course follow it. a new migrant caravan is expected to arrive into the southern california/mexico border. the group is still thousands of miles from reaching san diego. president trump has hardened his stance on immigration and specifically against the caravan of migrants. he has sought to suspend the granting of eye asylum to migrants who cross the border illeg illegally.

"the chronicle" reports a number of illnesses jumped by almost a thousand to nearly 8,000 in 2018. that's a jump of more than 10%. most cases are found in the central valley, caused by fungus found in the soil in the soil and dirt. spores are carried by wind and dust particles. new video of a dog in san diego being rescued from a sink hole. city officials say a storm drain collapsed, causing that massive dip in the roadway. crews had blocked off the area but somehow that dog wandered in through a barricade. crews managed to lower a ladder into the hole and calmly managed to bring that dog back out to safety. >> 6:45. new this morning, a fresno man is upset after he says walmart sent him a decorative pillow with a swastika symbol on it. ryan newman said he ordered the pillow online. when it arrived, he opened it and threw it on his couch. in a few days he noticed that swastika image.
6:46 am
newman thought it supposed to be a paris themed pillow. >> this is personal, both my wife and i have jewish heritage, my wife has direct descendants from the holocaust in germany, so this to us, this is a symbol of hate. >> walmart customer service told newman that the item was sold from a third party, who uses its website to see their items. in a statement, the company also said it has removed the item from its website. >> 6:46 right now. the president called for friendship and bipartisanship in last night's state of the union. >> scott mcgrew, some find that hard to believe. >> they do. keep in mind a number of people in the audience last night have been called names by the president, crying chuck schumer, little marco rubio, lightweight kirsten gillibrand, even stacey abrams called totally unqualified, crime-loving by the president. none thes to those people the president said, let's act better. >> but we must reject the
6:47 am
politics of revenge, resistance and retribution and embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise and the common good. >> now while that was met with skepticism, politico called it bewildering, the president can change the tone of the country here by encouraging a friendlier environment. but even six hours before the speech, the "new york times" said at a luncheon with news anchors, trump said joe biden was not very smart, schumer was a nasty son of a gun, except he didn't say gun, used his usual name for warren, even made fun of what he said was slow book sales for the late war hero and senator john mccain. there were bipartisan moments in the speech. mr. trump talked about ending the transmission of hiv and praised the number of women in congress, which got a cheer. >> we also have more women serving in congress than at any time before.
6:48 am
>> where we did not see a lot of clarification was the wall. the president did not say he would declare an emergency, nor did he say he would shut the government down if bipartisan immigration committee doesn't come up with a solution by the 15th. this leaves this unclear. we'll continue to watch this and continuing coverage of the state of the union and analysis coming up on the "today" show. >> sounds good, scott. it's 6:48. new this morning, love him or hate him, you can soon read all about him, talking about karl the fog. if you've been in the bay area long enough you've heard or maybe ignored something about him. karl the fog is an anonymous twitter account named for the almost constant presence of fog in san francisco. the man or maybe woman behind karl the fog is now coming out with a first book due in stores on may 7th.
6:49 am
karl the fog announced that news on his twitter feed and hopefully the success won't quickly evaporate. >> i was at the exploratorium and there was a live chat going on with karl the fog as they had a fog demonstration going on. >> we all follow karl the fog. >> i do. kari especially. >> some of so of the tweets are hilarious. i'm excited to hear about this book and see what's in there. no karl the fog this morning. it's wintertime and we have some cold temperatures. let's get a look outside, as you get ready to head out on the other bridge, the bay bridge, as we look toward san francisco from emeryville, all clear skies, but you do need the heater, up on full blast this morning, as our temperatures in the north bay have dipped down into the upper 20s, and lower 30s, below freezing in oakland right now, 35 degrees, and it is also freezing in livermore, 35 in san jose and freezing now in san martin, so some of those roads may still be icy, and
6:50 am
you'll have to watch out for that. as you walk to school this morning, in the south bay, bundle up those kids. maybe even a couple extra layers, and some of the things that they don't normally wear, be sure to write the name on the tag to make sure it comes back home. it will be in the mid-30s walking to school, and then as they come home from school, it will be in the lower 50s. we do have a couple more days of some dry weather, until this storm system moves in. we can see the swirl of the clouds and all of the bright, white there indicating high cloud tops. as we go throughout the next couple of days, that storm system starts to move in and the time line is at friday morning and we do see another round of rain moving in, but look to the north, farther to the north around ukiah and parts of lake county, another round of snow possible, so this will be a fairly chilly storm for the rest of the bay area, some low 50s, as we get off and on rain throughout friday, saturday, and most of the day on sunday as well. and then as we head over toward
6:51 am
the sierra, while we are getting rain, they're going to get more snow. look at how cold it is at squaw creek but a beautiful site with the heavy coating of snow. look at how much snow we've gotten over the season and our sierra snowpack is at 125% of normal and we're doing the best in the southern sierra, where it's at 133% of normal and we'll have more feet on the way as this system moves in over the next several days. we'll see some rain with our high temperatures only reaching the low 50s. a cool and soggy weekend. it moves out for the start of the work week but it is going to be wet all throughout the weekend. mike, how is it looking now at the san mateo bridge? >> we'll show you right here, kari, behind me, we have bob redell's live shot. i've got it on my phone right here. bob will text me with the latest he hears. the live pictures show they're still working on grinding down pieces of rebar that may be sticking up just above the roadway. got to make it safe for folks. after they repaired the pothole
6:52 am
that happened yesterday, cars were puncturing tires because of the rebar they want to make sure that's not the case after they repair the roadway. we're down half of your freeway westbound 92, as you come up toward industrial off of hesperian, that does have this backup on to city streets for hayward but that's not as bad as it could be. there's a disabled vehicle moving to the shoulder around "a" street and more traffic coming out of san leandro. overall this thursday commute looking lighter, some folks headed north to the bay bridge where the metering lights are on. others headed south toward the dumbarton bridge, a little more slowing through newark and over toward the fremont toll plaza there, but no major problems. still holding steady with 680 south through sunol, reports earlier from our friend about the boulder in lanes but no big deal as far as chp was concerned. here is the build for san jose northbound, your push through silicon valley, all northbound routes are starting to show a little more slowing, so here we have speeds in the generally about the 50-mile-per-hour range
