get out safely. bob redell is joining us now with a live report at 5:30. an exploding fireball in the middle of the city. our sky ranger caught this video of flames shooting in the air. thfts on gary at 2:00 p.m. pete suratos where the street was blocked off. peeta lot of questions even after the fire was put out. >> good morning, marcus. we're here on gary boulevard and parker avenue where the fire took place as a result of a gas explosion in the area. in fact, you can see behind me the damage left behind. several buildings damaged as a result and several pg&e trucks here on scene really working on this cleanup following thatf th morning. we know that explosion took place before 1:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon at a construction area where we're standing off of gary and parker spreading quickly in the area and destroying five

buildings all together. we're talking about bitses and homes that have been destroyed as a result of that fire. now, fire officials say the fire was ignited after a third party construction crew, which we're learning was a company called mass tech, ruptured the gas line in this area. as a result, that fire taking out power for at least 2500 customers. a the lo of customers there from laurel heights all the way to parts of the presidio. for the most part that power has been restored. as of last night. these are the numbers reported. still about 300 people without gas and 4100 without electricity. here is what some of the fire victims are saying about this incident. >> we're already thinking about where we can move some programming. we have some other sights, friends have offered. >> we're allowed to get our stuff, emergency supplies if we stay somewhere else for the night. they don't know when we'll get let back in. >> i come back and see my house over there.

oh, my god. >> take you back out here live to the scene following that. they tell us there's about seven service workers dealing with gas repairs overpass and 20 -- overnight and 20 to 30 coming in. thankfully there's no injuries after this massive fire. we'll continue to monitor and provide updates as they come in. pete suratos, "today in the bay." >> thank you, pete. now, the investigative unit is working on the store. >> pg&e has a troubled history when it comes to inspecting its underground lines. as an investigation first revealed several weeks ago, state regulators learned pg&e was understaffed and failed to respond within the two-day deadline with thousands of requests to inspect between 2012

and 2015. in fact pg&e filed as many as a quarter of a million false on time reports over a five-year period. if pg&e employees do not come out to mark the gas lines construction crews may not know where they are located before they start digging. in yesterday's case pg&e said those lines were marked and suggested a third party contractor was at fault. as we've been reporting, the gas explosion lasted more than two hours. our cameras were rolling most of that time. you can watch all of that video on our home 4:35.rom nbc bay now to a tragedy. friends and family of a man killed gathered to mourn last night. so far no arrests. >> the victim's friends and family are hoping someone with information will come forward. >> he really loved me and my

son. >> barely able to get words out to describe her father, andrea davis telling dozens of people attending a candlelight memorial for her father how she will remember him. >> everyone told me how much he talked about me and aiden. it made me so happy because i matched that love with him. >> avid cyclist douglas davis was discovered on this bike trail january 30th bleeding with the bicycle nearby. he was suffering from traumatic injuries. >> i get this call at 2:00 in the morning. i said, do you have a son named doug davis. i said, i do. >> he said you need to get to the hospital. >> he later died from his injuries. >> didn't matter who you wenown would always talk to you and be able to relate to anyone. >> davis worked at a clerk at a nearby safe way. >> he had lot of guys out theret
