inspector last few minutes. we'll track that. that's in oakland. in san francisco, b.a.r.t. to oakland connector canceled over in oakland again. in san francisco there's a reroute to 38, 38r because of the fire yesterday, the big one. laura, i know we have pete coming up in a couple seconds and pete will tell you more about the fire. >> we'll get to that in a moment. while people were sleeping, breaking news in eastern contra costa county one person dead in a fire in bethel island at 1:00 in the morning on gateway road. firefighters say an adult woman died. we're trying to get some new video from the scene. we do know four others north texas home did manage to get out safely. so far no word on how the fire started. as we know it's very cold outside. bob redell headed to the scene right now. he'll join us for a live report. >> we're tracking a developing story. this gas line here in the middle of san francisco could be seen for miles yesterday.

we brought you live breaking coverage of this all afternoon. now there are still a lot of unanswered questions. "today in the bay" pete suratos live on the scene in gary. still an active scene behind you. >> we're here on gary and parker. they are cleaning up all the damage as a result of the fire and gas explosion. you can see behind me over my right shoulder on gary and parker, at least a section of geary on this block right here has been shut down in the west direction as they continue to work on that fire that destroyed a number of buildings. you see one building, a chinese restaurant in front of me. let's go into exactly the details, at least what we know at this hour, what may have caused this fire. the explosion -- the gags explosion took place before 1:30 yesterday afternoon in the construction zone near geary and

parker. it destroyed five businesses ranging from businesses to homes in the area. a san francisco fire official say the fire was ignited after a third party construction crew, a company we're learning is called mass tech he ruptured the gas line. it took out power in san francisco from laurel heights all the way to parts of the presidio. for the most part that has been restored. as of last night there were about 300 people without gas and 41 people without electricity. here is what some of the fire victims are saying about this incident. >> we're already thinking about where we can move programming, some other sites friends have offered. >> we're allowed to get some emergency supplies caution they don't know when we'll be let back in. >> i come back and see my house over there. oh, my god. the fire. >> take you back out here live

and haven't gotten it in the mail you may be part of the tech glitch. live from san jose dmv this morning. what's the problem this time, chris? >> you know that saying, no good deed goes unpunished? the folks who might be affected by this glitch are the people who tried to renew their driver's licenses as soon as they got notices in the mail instead of delaying that until closer to the expiration date. let's show you what happened here. the dmv tried to get ahead of the backlog they have been experiencing sending out renewal notices earlier than usual, 5 to 35 dates you might get them in earlier years. the problem is they only accept renewals at 115 days or less before expiration. some folks renewed early, paid the fees, and now the system shows no record of that. who does this impact? if you got a notice to renew your license between november and january, this could be you.

the dmv said people with birthdays of february 25th would be the earliest impacted. sacramento dmv uncovered this glitch and could affect tens of thousands of californians. there's an internal review under way to figure out what happened here. this is in addition to a review by gmpbl sues overnor newsom ani from t audit. you can find me on nbc kris san, nbc bay area. if you were impacted, renewed your license early and haven't gotten it, let us know. maybe we can do something to help it along. >> thank you, kris. a 17-year-old shot in the leg while walking his dog in

menlo park. near east o'keefe street. he was taken to the hospital and no arrest was made. police say a motive isn't clear. new details, a teenager excused of stabbing a pacifica boy is behind bars this morning. the 17-year-old daley city boy was arrested last night. police say he allegedly stabbed a 14-year-old buy at the fairmont shopping center in pacifica yesterday afternoon and was then taken to the hospital where he remained in serious but stable condition. officers say at this time a motive is not yet clear. still no word on when oakland teachers will strike. they plan to gather tonight to create signage for when that moment happens. the strike is looking more and more likely even though both sides are holding meetings. it set the tone for a hectic school board meeting last night. the district is looking at how to cut $20 million from next year's budget. board members expect to vote on

the proposed cuts next week. >> let's head outside live downtown walnut creek at this hour. check out the temperature there, 36 degrees. it's yet another cold start to the morning, much like yesterday. right now we want to get to kari hall and some folks waking up to frost there, kari. >> another frosty morning. it's been cold all around the bay area even in san francisco this morning. as you get a clear look at our city and looking at some temperatures that are now at 41 degrees, then you make your way inland and it's below freezing in a lot of spots in the valleys especially the north bay. so just be mindful of that and watch out for some of the spots that may be slick on the roads and just try to slow it down. here is a look at high temperatures, we're heading in the mid to upper 50s. this the day to get out there and enjoy it. even though it's cool, we'll have the rain moving in tomorrow. i'll have more on that and, mike, you're taking us to the nimitz. >> most is all right but still

mike traffic tease tahoe report. today is the day to get to the sierra. tomorrow winter storm watch already up. we are going to see heavy snow coming down not only tomorrow but all throughout the weekend. we have 177" of snow at the base of the mountain with a season total of 341. we'll talk about what's going on as far as how much more snow we may get. that's coming up in less than five minutes. >> we're looking at san jose. plenty of room for more traffic. that will come later. right now your south bay moves

more layers for today. our high temperatures around the bay area mostly in the mid-50s for today. this is our last dry day before this storm system approaches. we can see it moving in closer right now. as it arrives, it's going to bring in rounds and rounds of rain. we also have another storm behind that that could start as early as tomorrow morning for the north bay. some pockets of heavy rain by 9:00. that's right in time for the morning commute. going into the evening commute, it's still raining off and on. there may be spots to get a bit of a break. we're also going to see the rain on saturday. scattered showers continuing to early sunday. sunday morning we may have another round of some snow on mount hamilton. a wintry mix for south bay, east bay hills, and also for the north bay hills. we're going to see that rain tapering off going into monday. meantime we're looking at the possibility of getting anywhere

from three-quarters of an inch while sierra gets several more feet of snow. we'll have more updates on that. mike, you're tracking a problem with the bay bridge. >> a possible problem. this big rig, lane four, that's the report called in. we count them, one, two, three, four. that's a cash lane. i don't know why the big rig would use the cash lane. i see traffic flowing but it did pause. looks like a build before the metering scheduled to turn on in a couple minutes at the bay bridge. oakland, contra costa county fine, zoom into alameda, downtown oakland, 880 continues to be slow because we continue to have the two left lanes blocked by disabled vehicle. that's been going on for a while. waiting for a flatbed tow truck. the rest of the bay shows no problems in the south bay or peninsula, a good drive there. a live look shows walnut creek

killing a stanislaus county police officer in december is due in court for a the man accused of shooting and killing a stanislav police officer in december is due in court for a mental competency hearing. mendoza accused of murdering the police officer. police say he was shot and killed in a traffic stop after christmas. the judge agreed to have the case against mendoza suspended to determine if he's mentally fit top stand for charges. the prosecutors will seek the death penalty. one woman attending stafford happens to be in the middle of it. dr. tyson on a one-year special study p at stanford. she accused lieutenant governor of sexual assault in 1974. her statement said it started at consensual kissing and turned

into a sexual assault. virginia lawmakers are trying to withhold the incident. >> i just need to learn what's going on and ask people not to rush to judgment. >> lieutenant's governor released a statement saying in part, i wish her no harm or humiliation nor do i speak to denigrate or diminish her voice but i cannot agree with something i know it not true. >> jussie smollett is back to work on empire. he said he was a victim of a hate crime, that they yelled racial slurs and put a noose around his neck. officers have found more surveillance video surrounding the time leading up to and after the incident but the new video hasn't been released. new this morning, new video

it. >> good morning to you, laura. a lot of questions about how the construction crew ruptured the gas line that led to the explosion, the big fire behind me on geary and parker. this is the damage. you see a number of pg&e crews on site. you see the restaurant over there seeing a lot of damage. there were about five buildings destroyed as a result of this fire. here is what we know at this hour, guys, when it comes to this fire that takes place in san francisco yesterday. as you mentioned off the top, laura, happened about 1:30 in the afternoon in this construction zone. this construction area near geary and parker. it spread very quickly. the fire destroying five buildings all together ranging from businesses to homes in the area. a san francisco fire official say the fire was ignited after a third party construction crew, a company that we now know goes by the name of mass tech ruptured the gas line in the area. that fire took out power for at

costa county fire. he tells me a female, a woman, adult woman, who was in the back bedroom sadly did not get out. she perished in the fire. the four other people who were inside did get out. they are physically okay and the red cross is helping them. i asked the battalion chief, he said do you know what caused this, he said, no, we don't have a determination yet. one of the major challenge fighting a fire like this, there's no water service on bethel island. they had to bring out their water. they brought three fire extinguishers. you can see this home is destroyed. right now we see those headlamps on the firefighters going through looking through the debris. of course, it's part of their investigation to determine what caused the fire that sadly killed one woman. reporting live on bethel island, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. another family is mourning this morning, this in the north bay.

they need your help finding who killed their loved one who they say was simply riding home on his bike. 54-year-old douglas jr. riding home on a popular bike trail in napa. a memorial held last night at the very spot where police found his body. they say he died from a traumatic injury. there's a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case. it could be a break in a decades old cold case. san francisco police releasing this new sketch of a serial killer in the 1970s. this is what he might look like now. they nicknamed him the doodler because he sketched the men he targeted. he could have targeted as many as 14 victims. there's a $100,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. 5:34. a new study shedding new light on scooter injury cases in southern california. ucla researchers looked at

scooter related injuries at two west los angeles hospitals. ne fou they found one-third arrived by ambulance. 30% had broken bones, 30% younger than 18, only 4% wearing a helmet. 21 of the injuries involved people just walking on sidewalks. teachers in the east bay city really want a bigger raise. dozens of teachers plan to gather at fremont to send a message to the district. they are upset over the .7% raise they are given this year. fremont unified district teachers association said that's way below the average and unfair considering the amount of funding from the state designated for employees. a second walk-in event is held and organized for tomorrow morning at american high school. it's 5:35 right now. happening today even though we're in the middle of winter, south bay vector control teams are stepping up west nile prevention efforts.

they plan to spray the area by helicopter to halt the spread of mosquitoes. the coverage area is march land east of 101. the spraying is not expected to impact nearby communities. another easy win for the warriors last night. they cruised to victory beating san antonio by nearly 40 points at oracle. klay thompson led the way with 26 points. they did clear the bench for most of the fourth quarter. after the game it wasn't all smiles. some of that has to do with rumors around kevin drachbt. he may be showing stress tied to looming free agency. many in the media are convinced he's ready to jump to the new york knicks this summer. last night he was asked again and it did not go well. >> come here every day ask me about free agency, teammates,

soggy and also chilly with those high temperatures only reaching about 53 degrees. heavenly is going to be a great place if you can get there today. if you can stay there past monday because in between all weekend long we're going to see heavy snow showers. travel going to be very difficult and temperatures reach into the low 30s tomorrow and mid-20s by the end of the weekend. going to russian river valley, it's also going to be a wet weekend. cool, highs only reaching 46 tomorrow. by saturday 52 degrees. there may be some peeks in the clouds and breaks in rain as we go into sunday. muir woods, also some wet trails and soggy conditions with highs reaching near 50 degrees all weekend long. it's going to be breezy as well. even if you're going out of town, you still may run into those showers. if you're going down santa barbara, you may be able to catch a few more sun rays with highs reaching into the upper 50s there. it's still going to be cool.
