has come forward accusing justin fairfax of sexual assault and the calls are growing louder for his resignation. mike viqueira is in the state capital of richmond this morning. mike, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. it looked like he'd be governor by now, but after a second accuser came forward late on friday, lieutenant justin fairfax is facing calls for his immediate resignation. >> he needs to resign immediately. >> reporter: virginia state delegate patrick hope was blunt. >> monday i intend to introduce articles of impeachment. >> reporter: the accusation this time, rape. meredith watson says it happened in 2000. she and fairfax were students at duke university. in a statement, watson describes the attack as premeditated and aggressive. to bolster her charge, a pr firm working with watson's attorney released what they say are past

electronic messages with friends, including an e-mail dated october 2016 where watson writes justin raped me in college. the charge comes after dr. week accused fairfax of sexually assaulting her in 2004 when they were both in boston to attend the democratic national convention. fairfax is fighting back. in a statement he says i deny this latest unsubstantiated allegation. it is demonstrably false. i have never forced myself on anyone ever. he calls for an investigation into what he terms a vicious and coordinated smear campaign and adds i will not resign. just hours before watson's charge was made public, fairfax was defiant when approached by nbc news. >> do you support the investigation into the allegation against you? >> we will have our say and i'm confident in the truth. >> reporter: but prominent democrats are lining up to insist he go. terry mcauliffe, the black caucus and 19 members of the

democratic caucus of the state senate where fairfax presides. and as of late friday, several presidential candidates have called for fairfax to step down. including cory booker. >> i just believe it is time for him to step down. >> and mike, what a difference a week makes. this time last week we were talking about that blackface/kkk scandal with the governor ralph northam. and at the time most everybody said he have simply could not survive it politically. so where do things stand this morning? >> reporter: well, you're absolutely right. remember, after that picture surfaced from that 1984 yearbook photograph of blackface standing next to an individual in a kkk hood, this place erupted. it was besieged by media. ralph northam has lasted the week contrary to expectations. yesterday we're told he had a meeting with his senior staff and he told them i will not resign. >> mike, thank you. and now to the fiery and

often tense hearing on capitol hill friday where the acting attorney general was peppered for hours by sharp questions from congressional democrats about whether he has interfered with the special counsel investigation. kelly o'donnell has more. >> reporter: good morning. this new era of divided government was on full and contentious display friday. the president's acting attorney general who is leaving that position in just a matter of days was on capitol hill facing hours of tough questions, mostly from democrats on the russia investigation. he appeared voluntarily, but the q&a was a struggle. matt whitaker's temporary job as acting attorney general is expected to end next week. >> i have not interfered in any way with the special counsel's investigation. >> reporter: his contentious appearance on capitol hill -- >> mr. chairman, i see that your five minutes is up and so -- i'm

whitaker over his past criticism of the special counsel including interviews where he had previously called the probe a witch hunt. >> are you overseeing a witch hunt? >> reporter: whitaker refused to discuss his conversations with the president and insisted he did not discuss the mueller investigation with anyone in the trump inner circle. >> talk about your views of the mueller investigation with anyone at the white house? >> i did not talk about my views of the mueller investigation with anyone at the white house. >> reporter: and for the second time since taking office, president trump had a physical examination, but unlike last year, there was no on camera briefing and no detailed results provided. instead, the white house physician put out a written statement saying that president trump is in very good health and he expects that to remain for his time in office and beyond. now to the case of the jeff

bezos and "national enquirer." the feds are looking into jeff bezos' claims that the tabloid tried to blackmail him. if it is true, it could break an agreement the publisher has with federal prosecutors. nbc's white house correspondent geoff bennett is in washington following the latest developments for us this morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning. amazon ceo jeff bezos is turning the tables on the tabloid. he is offering e-mails said to be from "national enquirer's" parent company ami that threaten the release of embarrassing photos of the tech billionaire. bezos trying to deweaponize the photos as he hunts down the source. for ami, a bezos investigation could be the least of its problems. this morning a new twist. federal prosecutors are looking into whether ami broke their cooperation agreement. according to a source familiar with the matter.

the deal over alleged hush money payments during donald trump's presidential campaign required that ami commit no further crimes. but now jeff bezos, the billionaire boss of amazon, is accusing the tabloid of extortion and blackmail. bezos posted e-mails sent from representatives for ami to his attorney in an attempt to stop the investigation in to how the "enquirer" obtained the intimate text messages. bezos claims the tabloid demanded a public statement saying they have no knowledge or basis to suggest the coverage was politically motivated. if he refused, the "enquirer" threatened to publish more intimate texts and photos. an action legal experts say could put ami's deal with the government in jeopardy. >> ami's behavior here was reckless at best and possibly criminal and they risk having this agreement ripped up. >> reporter: nbc news has not independently reviewed the e-mails.

ami in a statement saying it believes fervently that it acted lawfully in reporting the bezos story and describes having been in good faith negotiations to resolve all matters with bezos. bezos explaining his decision to speak out writing, of course i don't want personal photos published. but i also won't participate in ami's well-known practice of blackmail, political favors, political attacks and corruption. i prefer to roll the log over and see what crawls out. now, the "washington post" recently reported that bezos' long time private security consultant said he was looking into whether lauren sanchez's brother may be behind the leak of those photos. he is said to be a supporter of president trump and the president as you know has repeatedly attacked bezos, amazon and the "washington post" which bezos also owns. >> a lot we'll likely be talking about in the days ahead. thank you very much. another candidate is expected to throw her hat into the very crowded democratic race.

massachusetts senator elizabeth warren is set to make that announcement. but she's already doing damage control over past claims she's native american. kathy park has the latest. >> elizabeth warren has signaled a presidential bid forming an exploratory committee in december, building momentum with supporters on social media. but today she's expected to kick off her campaign following an apology tour. >> we're going to build a grass roots movement. >> reporter: this morning senator warren will mark a new milestone in her political career with a presidential announcement. >> if we persist together, we can win. >> reporter: she's expected to officially launch her campaign in the struggling city of lawrence, massachusetts, a fitting backdrop for warren's promise to rebuild the middle class. >> lawrence is a diverse community. working hard, boldly pursuing the american dream. >> reporter: warren joins an

>> pocahontas, pocahontas. i have more indian blood than you do and i have none. >> reporter: and the president won't be the only one taking aim at her politics. and the list of presidential hopefuls may be growing. beto o'rourke and michael bloomberg say they will make a decision about running by the end of this month. >> there have been recent polls testing the candidates and really no surprise. joe biden is on the top of all of them. considering his name recognition, a lot of people expected is that. is there any idea when he may throw his hat in the ring? >> right now there is no official confirmation, but there are a lot of reports that he has been in close talks with capitol hill democrats and spoken to dianne feinstein and she believes that we'll be hearing from him within a month. >> okay. thank you. >> just 21 months to go.

a desperate situation in venezuela is getting worse this morning with the people there starving but the government refusing to allow crucial u.s. humanitarian aid to make its way into that country. this all hinges on a battle for the presidency. kerry sanders is there for us again today. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter. reports the u.s. is actively encouraging senior members of the venezuela military here to defect, to switch their allegiance to the opposition leader who among other things requested that humanitarian aid from the united states, which is now stuck at the border. it wasn't supposed to be like this, boxes of food and medicine stuck in a warehouse instead of in the hands of venezuela's sick and hungry. this is the first of $20 million in humanitarian aid sent by the united states. but with the bridge leading to venezuela blocked, it is unclear what the u.s. will do next. >> i think president trump has been clear that nothing is off

the table. >> reporter: embattled venezuelan president nicolas maduro who won an election last year that many saw as a sham ordered the bridge blocked. he claims president trump wants to invade his country. on friday, talking to reporters. >> why won't you let the gift of medicine and food from the united states in? the people of venezuela need it, don't they? >> reporter: maduro says it is a rotten gift, the package is pretty on the outside, but on the inside it brings the poison of humiliation. nbc's gabe gutierrez is on the border. >> they have supplies enough for 5,000 for just ten days, but it is unclear how it will be able a to get in to that country. >> reporter: juan guaido recognized by the u.s., latin america and europe as interim president asked for the aid. friday he said his

administration is now working to bypass the blocked bridge. one student now sees hope for this country, calling guaido venezuela's barack obama. >> guaido is our last bullet. we have given support to so many politicians and we have been through so many stages of this protest. but right now, we feel like it is different. >> reporter: aside from the bridges which are blocked, there are unguarded footpaths that venezuelans could take to cross over to the border, pick up the boxes and hand carry them back into this country. but those who work at the distribution center fear that if they take that route, the items in the boxes will just end up being sold on the black market and not handed out for free as intended. >> kerry sanders inside venezuela, thanks. time for a first look at the weather. dylan is here with that. >> good morning. an interesting situation out in the pacific northwest, take a look at the snow. this is in the seattle area

where we've had about 6.4 inches of snowfall already. this is only the second largest 24 hour snowstorm in 20 years. so this is certainly unusual situation, 150 flights in and out of the airport have been canceled, a state of emergency has been declared. and the snow is still falling. it will move eastward as we go through the day, but we do have winter weather advisories and alerts in effect for the entire pacific northwest. if we take a look, it is going to move east into the rockies, it looks like mainly rain for coastal california, but snow in the mountains. we could see 2 to 4 feet in the sierra nevada mountain range. it will move eastward going into sunday. seattle could see another couple of inches of snow. same for portland, we could see 3 to 6 inches. mountain range could end up with 2 to 4 feet of additional snow. . we've got 46 degrees this morning in san francisco. cloudy skies, but we do have a

by the president's state of the union speech, but there were plenty of other stories as well starting with a deadly plane crash on the west coast. a small plane slammed into a home in california killing the pilot and as well as four people who were inside the house. >> in a backyard crews found the cabin and body of the pilot. a coroner identified him as a retired chicago police officer. but the chicago pd telling nbc news they have no record of anyone by that name ever being a police officer in chicago. a massive gas explosion shook san francisco, flames shooting several stories high. the wall of fire engulfing at least five buildings as neighbors ran for their lives. construction crews punctured a gas line igniting the three alarm blaze that quickly spread. fortunately no one was killed. a colorado jogger fought for his life when a mountain lion

attacked him while he was running on a wooded trail. >> smaller than a full grown 180 pound adult like this one, the juvenile lion began to bite and claw into the man's face, legs, arms and back, suffering serious injuries with his bare hands, authorities say the victim choked the mountain lion to death. >> just a matter of survival for him at that point. actor liam neeson came under fire after recounting his experience nearly 40 years ago when a friend told him she had been raped b ed by a black man. >> he walked the streets with a club. >> i did it for maybe a week hoping that some black [ bleep ] would come out of a pub and have a go at me. >> the actor later apologize. some of this week's most dramatic moments caught on camera, this construction worker was left dangling after scaffolding collapsed beneath him, fortunately he was wearing

a safety line and was able to pull himself up to the roof unharmed. this father stepped on of this train for a smoke leaving his baby on board. when the train started pulling away are, another passenger tried to alert him. thankfully the train's engineer was notified within minutes and reunited the dad with his baby. and a car barrelled in to that florida restaurant. six people were injured but everyone survived. the patriots got a warm welcome back home during a parade celebrating their super bowl victory. rob gronkowski catching a football to the face. but partying on in good spirits. and even was seeing double this week on "today." >> i met my spitting image on tuesday. >> oh, my goodness. >> and then it was dylan's turn. >> i'm nervous. >> oh, my gosh! do we have the same dress on too? oh, my gosh. look, we can turn around and you

rain at least for today. just occasional pockets of light to moderate rainfall. stormranger right there pushing showers in. approaching the peninsula now and the santa cruz mountains as well. we'll keep the chance of seeing that rain throughout the entire day. as we head into tomorrow, tomorrow is when we expect to see the stronger storm move in. that will bring low elevation snow once again to the bay area. so i'll break down the exact timeline for that. as far as today, topping out in the 50s. once again, it's going to be one of those cool weekends where you need to be bundled up before you head out the door. as far as the rain, you will need a nice umbrella but it won't be pouring all day. all right. repairs to the richmond-san rafael bridge are under way after concrete went crashing down on cars. caltrans went to work last night replacing a metal plate with a larger one.

wheel that's being done repairs to the car are uncertain. graham edwards was driving this white mercedes on the lower deck when pieces of the upper deck fell in front of his car, barely missing his windshield. >> it was one of those oh no, moments. do you stop, hit your brakes? is a truck behind me. i must have tapped the brakes n instinctively that made the difference. >> the bridge was shut down off and on for nine hours. caltrans hopes repairs will be complete by monday morning's computer. following a developing story involving b.a.r.t., a dangerous fight on a train. it happened last night at the 16th and mission station. a spokesperson describes it as a fight with a weapon involved. there was heavy police presence at the civic center. b.a.r.t. says one person was taken to the hospital with injuries. their condition is unknown.

an 11-hour standoff in campbell brought traffic and businesses to a standstill. it started before 5:30 yesterday morning when this man allegedly pointed a gun at a denny's employee in the parking lot. he then walked into the restaurant, sat down in a booth and refused to leave, launching the standoff. finally around 4:30 p.m., he surrendered peacefully to officers. we're told no one was hurt. 5:29. coming up on "today in the bay," need a suggestion on wine, beer or liquor? this robot has got you covered. we'll have that and your top stories and weather coming up at 7:00. we hope you will join us. right now back to the "today" show.

we're back on this saturday morning, february 9, 2019. a chilly day here in new york city, but still a hearty crowd on the plaza. let's begin with the check of the headlines beginning with more calls this morning for the resignation of virginia lieutenant governor justin fairfax after a second woman accuses him of sexual assault. she claims the attack took place when they were both students at duke university. cory booker and tim kaine are among those demanding fairfax to step down. fairfax denies the allegations calling for an investigation. rescuers are desperately searching for the pilot of a car go plane that crashed off the

coast of florida friday. the plane was en route to miami from the bahamas when it went down. the u.s. coast guard managed to lift one member to safety, he is believed to be the only other person who was on word. he was air lifted to a hospital only with a broken leg. xwl police in north carolina are hunting for suspect in this i can't dramatic hit and run. police believe it was intentional. the victim suffered severalican. police believe it was intentional. the victim suffered several injuries. the man walking alongside her has dated the suspect. there are several warrants for the driver's arrest. and an olympic gold medal winning snow border chloe kim is adding another title to her resume, the halfpipe queen winning the word chachampionshi. and she's just 18. and also a new twist in the

investigation of a missing mom whose fiance has been charged with her murder. on friday, a nurse who was reported will i friends with the fiance admitted she committed a crime in connection with the case. m morgan chesky is in los angeles with more. >> reporter: 32-year-old crystal kinney had her first court appearance as she faces charges of tampering with evidence in the case of missing mom kell berreth. >> reporter: kinney ostood in te courtroom advisably emotional before making two stun ning admissions. kenney pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence, admitting she took the cellphone to idaho with a single ping sent investigators down what was supposed to be a dead end.

a source saying she and frazee were friends. and frazee faced a judge thursday this time for a custody hearing over the daughter he shared with berreth, the father turned suspect surrounded by security. >> this case has gotten a lot of national attention. >> reporter: he stands accused of the premeditated murder of berreth and solicitation of first-degree murder. berreth's family says they are thankf thankful. berreth was last seen in this grocery store. today the search for her body continues as the family embraces berreth's daughter. on thursday, a judge ruled 1-year-old caylee will remain with berreth's parents. >> it means so much to them to have that piece of kelsey in their lives and to be able to take care of her. >> reporter: patrick frazee is due back in court on february 19 where he is expected to make a

plea and prosecutors will lay out the evidence they have against him. >> morgan, thank you. dylan back with another check of the weather. >> and we are going to see some pretty cool temperatures especially across the northern plains, upper midwest. we have windchill advisories in effect as cold as 15 to 45 degrees below zero. temperatures right now are on the colder side. feels like 23 below in minneapolis, 9 below in des moines. st. louis the windchill makes it feel like it is 4. even cincinnati feels like 3. as we go into this afternoon, high temperatures will be running about 10 to 15 degrees below average. minneapolis a high of only 9, rapid city, south dakota, 5. paducah, 39. and then sunday, we are looking a still chilly temperatures running below average 23 this green bay, dallas 46 degrees which is 12 degrees below average. and then going into next week on monday, we're looking at high temperatures back close to 60 in nashville and tuesday looks nice before it cools off again for wednesday.

for the teaching, not for the income. >> you do it because it is your passion. there will always be something else i can do or there will always be something more i can be doing. i have it on my heart all the time. and if you don't love it, you're not going to want to feel that way all the time. >> so here is the challenge when it comes to teacher shortages. you can recruit professionals to go into these classrooms. but if they aren't trained for the other parts of teaching, they often quit. so because of that, they have this program where they try to support those teachers and other first year teachers. and it seems to be working. i think they have like a 96% retention rate. and also people look at salaries, let's say we have the same degree and we both go into on you professions. i make 60 cents to your dollar as a teacher and we're at the bottom of the list when you look at other industrialized nations. so a lot of work to be done, but people are finally starting to say enough is enough. >> interesting the support they need more than the money.

>> he needs to resign immediately. >> reporter: virginia state delegate was blunt. >> on monday, i intend to introduce articles of impeachment on lieutenant governor justin fairfax. >> reporter: the accusation this time, rape. meredith watson says it happened in 2000 when she and fairfax were both students at duke university. in a statement, watson describes the attack as premeditated and aggressive. to bolster her charge, a pr firm working with watson's attorney release what had they say are past electronic messages with friends, including an e-mail dated october 2016 where watson writes justin raped me in college. the charge comes after dr. vanessa tyson earlier in the week accused fairfax of sexual assaulting her in 2004 when they were both this boston to attend the democratic national convention. fairfax is fighting back. in a statement he says i deny this latest unsubstantiated allegation.

also this morning a horrible outcome after an attempt to get an endangered tiger to mate with another tiger turned deadly. sarah harman is in london with more on this story. >> reporter: good morning. what happened here is a conservationist's worst nightmare. sumatran tigers are incredibly rare and introducing these two animals was part of a key conservation effort to save the species. sadly it went terribly wrong. a first encounter turned deadly. the 10-year-old was the pride of the london zoo, a mother who had given birth to seven cubs includes twins in 2016. and the 7-year-old had just arrived from denmark as part of a european breeding program. hopes were high that he'd be the perfect mate. zoo keepers introduced the pair slowly keeping them in separate enclosures for ten days so they could see and smell each other before being brought together.
