good thursday morning to you. this morning we are issuing a microclimate weather alert as that storm, as you can see if you look out the window, slamming the bay area. right now our radar lit up. our nbc bay area storm ranger is tracking the rain as it moves through the area. >> taking a live look at the bay bridge. dealing with some power issues as well this morning. a look in palo alto where it is just another wet commute. new video from overnight shows the rain coming down very hard in san francisco. you can hear it just pounding the pavement. we are on early this morning at 4:00 a.m. to help you get ready. good morning and thanks so much i'm laura
4:01 am
we have breaking news. we are tracking a mudslide in sausalito that has a woman trapped in her home. we want to get to that in a moment but first want to get to meteorologist kari hall. looking at this rain dumping a lot of water on the bay area. >> we have thunderstorms, high winds. as we go through the rest of the day, this is what we can expect. as we get a look at first our flood warnings in effect for parts of the north bay and sonoma county, we do have a flood warning for santa rosa, ronner park, that kins to 7:45. we see water levels rising in creeks and streams. this continues for the next few hours. we also have a flood warning on the napa river going through doumpbt napa. this will be until further notice. we are expecting this to crest later in the he another warning russian river in gernvilurnevil.
4:02 am
thatld ove 5 feet. we have some in marin county. street flooding. you don't want to drive where water covers the road. that continues until 8:45 this morning. we also have the flood warning in effect for got lupe river just north of almaden. this is going to rise as we go into the next couple of hours. this may flood areas over the avenue bridge and up towards the elks lodge. some heavy rain moving through parts of the south bay and east bay. as we get a closer look at the east bay as you get ready to head out, a couple of areas with bright reds and yellows moving east of san ramon, also through the tri-valley right now, so the drive is very wet. for the south bay, a lot of heavy rain over the santa cruz mountains. that's what's causing the problems, the flooding, and also rising reservoir levels and street flooding. so a lot of concerns here over
4:03 am
the next few hours. i'll continue to track that and the possibility of thunderstorms as coming up in a few minutes. mike, you're also seeing a new set of problems this morning. >> that's right, kari. talking about rain and flooding. we're aware of this over here in san jose where kari is talking about rain activity right now. we see water on the lens and all this kicking off the roadway. even though lightly populated in silicon valley, a lot of rain, puddling and ponding. we look at the peninsula getting hit with that rain off the coast. things are calmer over there. 280 southbound daly city. we've seen a series of reports of trees down. sounds like the latest in here. a tree blocking one lane at mara marama maraga as well. firefighters are working to save a woman.
4:04 am
she is trapped in her home. reportedly a mudslide actually moved her houses happening on s boulevard off crescent avenue. we've heard firefighters have made verbal contact with the woman. she's trapped in the house and they are working to get her out. bob redell is headed to the scene. he's going to join us for a live report. a photographer is on the scene gathering video and joins us now on the phone. brian, are you there? >> yes, ma'am. i am here. >> tell me what you saw when you came up on this. >> i was in the area of 49 and crescent. there is a structure that is on that roadway that is completely, completely destroyed. it's actually very heartbreaking. i got up close to it. there's a sole marin county sheriff's deputy here. he's talking to her. i can actually hear her inside the structure yelling help. she sounds like she's okay. she's telling the deputy she's not injured just trapped.
4:05 am
part of the structure is on the roadway, part is below the ri roadway. i am monitoring scanners. it sounds like there is two women trapped in two different homes at that location. >> okay. can you give me any idea of how far it looks like it slid off its foundation? >> it's really hard to tell. the streets here in sausalito are very, very close together. you could throw a rock from one street to the next. i don't know how far. there's so many trees. the address i was near was 49 crescent. that is exactly where the road is completely blocked. we have all kind of units from southern marin fire here. they are calling for usar units, urban search and rescue and
4:06 am
police from several departments also. >> as we continue to talk to you on the phone, we are looking at new vor into our newsroom right now where you can see some of those emergency personnel peeking through trees. it looks like it crumbled. can you tell? was it a single structure, a home? >> it's hard to tell if it was a home or larger building, whatever. there are some almost mansion-type homes here. it's hard to tell. basically if you guys have got the video i shot up, you can see part of the structure on the roadway and then part of it is below crescent. i believe both of these homes that slid are originally on sausalito boulevard. >> so two homes. you're talking about two homes here, bryan. >> yeah, there's at least two homes that are down. >> you're just showing us right now, two homes it sounds like
4:07 am
slid off foundation in sausalito. bryan, does the rain continue to fall there as well? >> actually, it was kind of crazy. as soon as i pulled up, there was a lull in the storm. there was no rain at all. it started a littlen the streetd away a little bit. i saw a huge transformer explosion in the sky a few blocks away from me, which is kind of downtown sausalito, so i'm sure we're having power outages as well. >> so you can actually hear the cries of these women trapped in the home? >> i could hear one of them. it was very heartbreaking because she kept asking -- there was a lone deputy -- most of the fire service people were on the other side and this deputy was trying to get -- direct the fire people to where he was. he was very heartbreaking to listen to people in there. she kept asking, are you guys
4:08 am
going to help me. the good idea is she's talking, alert, conscious, obviously. she's saying that she's fine, she's just trapped. >> she's just in a certain part of the house. goodness gracious. >> bryan, had is marcus here. the path that house is sliding, is it in danger of hitting any other homes in the area? >> yeah. it definitely hit another home also. i don't know if that is damaged also. this structure is just completely, completely collapsed. it looks like something basically of the murk video we see from the south and east. it is completely down. we've seen some of these houses that stay in tact if they slide off a foundation. this is totally, totally gone. >> have you heard anything about evacuations of other homes in that area because of what happened to this home that we're looking at now? potentially two homes. >> i have not. i ran into a couple that lived
4:09 am
next door. they have self-evacuated and looking, actually asked me if i knew where they should go. they were headed towards the main fire station and police station in assaulsausalito for shelter. to answer your question, they are overwhelmed by what's going on here. we've got very professional firefighters here, but this is a lot for them to handle. i don't see them doing other evacuations in the area. >> are you seeing any attempt at trying to get to this woman? do they know exactly where she is? has she said where she is in the house? >> she is, you kn soting the video. like i said, the firefighters are on the other side and this sole deputy from the marin county sheriff's department was trying to get -- trying to talk to the firefighters and dispatch
4:10 am
to try to get them down here. as i was pulling away, an plans was just pulling up to the scene, so the fire crews were just arriving to where she was trapped. >> all right. bryan carmody, that's for joining us. there was a mudslide and a woman trapped in a home that slid off its foundation. we'll continue to monitor this breaking news all day long. we continue to follow right over the bay area. we have breaking coverage. crews on the scene. we'll have more for you coming up after the break.
4:11 am
4:13 am
news. -breaking news -mudslide in sausalito -woman is trapped. good morning. welcome back 4:14 on this thursday morning. we continue to follow huge news. >> there's a must slides in sausalito that's completely taken a home off its foundation down the road into another home. there's a woman trapped inside. she is calling for help. emergency crews are on the scene. it's almost a sense of they don't know where to begin. the home is set to be completely demolished. you can see by the video here as if the hurricane hit it. it's from these massive storms we've been having hitting the bay area. the ground completelyni just of sausalito boulevard in the area of crescent avenue. firefighters have made her out. we have nbc bay area's bob redell headed to the s right now. we talked to a photographer who
4:14 am
shot this video for us, who is describing the harrowing situation he's seen nothing like it ever before. we continue to follow breaking news all morning. >> a live look out the bay bridge. do those lights look a little dim to you? watch what happened suddenly last night on the eastern span. those lights suddenly began to flicker and suddenly went out all together. i want you to look at it. see that flicker there? then all of a sudden they just go out.this ll happened about 6:00 p.m. caltrans said it started getting reports of light problems on the oakland side of the bridge that went on for pretty much a while there. then the bridge went to total darkness. we saw the same thing happen again during the overnight hours. electricians were called to investigate this situation. caltrans says that weather may have had something to do with all of this. >> right now it looks like this is an electrical issue with a
4:15 am
substation on the bridge. obviously a this point not sure. it was raining hard at the time. >> when lights returned. it was at full power. we're expecting caltrans for more answers. next kari tracking the forecast. >> we are still seeing heavy rain moving through pretty much all of the bay area but some spots will get a brief break. we definitely need it in the north bay. we'll talk about how much rain we've already measured and what's ahead as we go through the day coming up. we continue tg
4:18 am
news. -breaking news we continue to follow breaking news this thursday morning, 4:18. as you can see here, this is the breaking news we're talking about a woman trapped in a home in sausalito. >> this is because the home on the foundation actually slid off, slid into another home. crews are at the scene right now because they are hearing the woman's cries from inside this house. people that have been through that area, our photographer that shot this video, said it looks like a hurricane hit the house. can you see right there, it is completely crumbled to the ground. we don't know what room the woman is but she does appear to be safe, safe enough to be yelling for cries of help. there was an officer on the scene as you see him poking through the trees there this nbc bay area's bob redell arrived at the scene. bob, this looks like a horrific situation they are dealing with.
4:19 am
>> repas you can see, you've go firefighters with the flashlights walking towards us, deputy in the foreground. they are bringing this woman out right now. they just pulled her from this house on crescent avenue that slid down from a road that was up above we believe from sausalito avenue. it's our understanding she is conscious. she was talking to this deputy that's right here in front of us. she was about 15 yards into that wreckage. she was able to move in there. you can see her right now on the stretcher. she is conscious and i did speak with the pft. i asked if she was going to survive. he said, i believe so. his only description of her was she was elderly and able to communicate with this deputy. deputy, do you have a moment to tell us -- >> no, okay. i was speaking with him off camera about what she was saying to him. it was basically just help me. get me out of here. you can see her hands. she's moving,o we give them ple.
4:20 am
so you can see the wreckage in the background. we believe there are two homes. her home was one of them and there was another one. either hers on top or the other on top. one came down and took down the other and it landed on crescent avenue. you can see the fire department is wheeling her to the ambulance. we're glad to see she's obviously conscious. she is communicating. how are you doing, ma'am? she said thank god for the neighborhood. i don't know i according to the fire battalion chief i spoke with earlier, he believes she's okay, conscious, moving her arms and able to express herself.
4:21 am
it'sthis. you get a better sense of wreckage. here on the road on crescent avenue. that's where she was struck. to the right you can see the a frame at the top of one of the homes. excuse me. go ahead, ma'am, which came tumbling down. if it's hard to tell in the dark, crescent avenue, the road that we're on is very narrow, very keep. on each side there are steep hills. this is a tricky situation. it's remarkable the rescuers were able to find her and get her out. there's something you won't be able to tell on the television and that's the smell of natural gas. i'm not suggesting there's a danger here of something igniting. you can smell it. that wouldn't be a surprise given the fact this was ripped from the foundation and with that the utilities. they believe that the other hous wbelieve right now this s you saw that was wheeled off and being taken to the hospital right now.
4:22 am
laura, marcus. >> it is simply miraculous to see this woman puld in the air. did you see, bob, at all how she got to this woman? >> i believe the deputy standing in front of us was one of the first on the scene. when i was talking to him, he said, yes, i was talking to her. do you see that red generator at the feet of the firefighters, they had that pointed in the direction where she was at. that's at the bottom. they climbed up to the top of the screen there, and they were able to see her. she was able to move things around, make of the debris in h or at least had had some space to move and to talk and >> again, did you see right now if you'reus, a house knocked off its foundation
4:23 am
and went on top of another. bob is there explaining to us what happened. talk to us. you saw her. they rolled her past you. talk to us again, what she was saying and what you heard. >> reporter: she was saying something like thank goodness for my neighbors. i don't know if it was the neighbors calling 911. the deputies asking us to back up here. deputy, do you know if there's anyone else in the homes? you don't know or there aren't any? i'm sure the fire dar there isn't anyone else. they are taking a look in what used to be the attic of that home. i assume they are trying to assess the stability. they have the neighbors in the surrounding homes here. it doesn't appear those homes are damaged but
4:24 am
precaution because of what happened last night. the good news is the rain has stopped. we haven't had rain since we've been here in the past 20 minutes. that's not to suggest there's a risk of mudslide. at least it's not rain hard. there you go. you get a good sense of the firefighter putting his flashlight in there, what used to be the top of the house that is now at a horrible angle on the side of this cliff here in sausalito. >> so bob, did it actually slide into another house or just down the hillside there? >> so what we believe happened, up on the left side of screen there you can't see, it's dark. that's a tall hill. we believe there was one house high up. that came sliding down and took another house wit. don't know which house it was. this one we're looking at or up the road. apparently between homes. fortunately they believe the other home was vacant and you had this had the lady wheeled off inside. >> so was she actually in the
4:25 am
house you think that slid off? or she was in the one where the vacant house slid into hers? >> reporter: we're not sure. that part we're not sure about. we know that one -- we believe one slid into another. whether it was the initial one to slide down or the other way around, that part we're not sure of. i'm trying to see if there's a firefighter we can speak to. these guys are pretty busy trying to get more details. before they did pull her out, when i was talking to the the fact they were able to get out, he was very confident in her. obviously reiterating the fact she was going to survive and that she was able to move around in there and move some debris around to find -- to get a better vantage point. hey there. morning. >> if you're just joining us -- go ahead. >> reporter: you can just get a sense of m that's on their
4:26 am
turnouts there. really getting in there and for hem i'm sure the amount of kind of rescue and to get a positive result where you have the victim out alive and, you know, presumably going to survive. that's, nao, a great deal for these men out here. >> and rather quickly. because we just came on the air at 4:00 this morning. we heard the reports of this. it's amazing to see that that woman, they were able to pull her out. >> to see her and see her moving, what seemed to be coherent at the time. bob, talk to us about any evacuation surrounding that area. i know the potential threat of other homes falling off of their foundations. have they said anything to you about that? are you seeing them go door to door by any chance? >> we know a couple of homes on the right to the left, those people have left. the bottom of the hill, we see flashlights down there.
4:27 am
i presume they are firefighters to get people to evacuate or assess t. there is evacuations here. is there imminent threat of mudslides or houses sliding down, we don't see that right now. >> we do know there's rain on the way. bob redell, we'll keep you live at the scene and check in with you all morning long. thanks so much. as he continues to gather more information, a home slid off its foundation in sausalito boulevard in the area of crescent avenue. a woman trapped inside has been rescued. it's breaking news we'll continue to follow all morning long. >> we're going to continue to follow this. crews on the scene. there is more breaking news to tell you about as this storm continues to linger. evacuation order along guadalupe river at willow glen way to atlantic avenue. we'll continue to follow this story and bring you more news as we continue our storm coverage this morning.

4:30 am
just learned people along guadalupe to willow glen were encouraged to evacuate immediately. this is due to flooding in that area. of course that rain continues to pour down here in the bay area. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring this situation. kari, this is a situation we're probably going to see enmany neighborhoods in the bay area. >> so many warnings, hard to get to them autumn. sonoma to show you stormn county and a much needed break. we're seeing heavier rain shifting toward theeadyth to head out. ot o standing water on the roadways. we are also having some high winds to blow that rain around so it creates low visibility.
