6:08 am
heavy waves of rain and some breaks in between, this pattern sticks with us throughout the weeken, as we add up on more of the rainfall. here we are this evening, at 10:30, and yes, we do still have some rain in and around the area, but this could cause some more flooding, as well as mudslides, and the winds at times will gust up in some of the heavier cells. we're watching out for all of that for you and keep you up to date. another update in a few minutes. mike, it's wet and windy on the roads. >> that's right. almost all of our bridges, except for the dumbarton bridge, have chp issuing a wind advisory, as folks are crossing the spans. the oakland camera shook quite a bit as rain traveled through. it just moved a little farther east, but it does look like things are wet there and around the bay. really hitting contra costa county, diablo range, more across the peninsula as well. so we're tracking that, slippery commute around the bay. the closure continues for west highway 37. we've been following that since last night. novato not fully accessible as you come over from vallejo, use

right now at 6:12, it's time for the squaw valley alpine meadows snow report. we are going to still see heavy snow coming down, highs in the low 20s, and lows in the single digits this weekend. if you are planning to go to the sierra, make sure you check the road information. i know going to north lake, i-80 is closed, and we will see more snow throughout the weekend. looking at the snow coming down now on the radar, it will be heavy at times, make sure you're prepared. we'll talk about what's going on with rain across the bay area,

6:14 am
waymo cars drove 1.3 million miles total, compared to 353,000 last year so you see how the number is accelerating. another interesting statistic, the average waymo car was able to drive 11,000 miles before the driver had to intervene, what they call disengagement. let's look at that as a list. waymo cars able to go about 11,000 miles on average, before the human safety driver had to take the wheel or hit the brake to avoid an incident. you see how far ahead they are from the next best, general motors, which tends to be testing in san francisco, so let's be fair, they're not in mountain view cities, a lot more difficult for robots. and zoox, the startup trails behind that. a human had to take over every thousand miles. social networks are under fire for allowing anti-vaccination posts and ads on their sites. a powerful u.s. congressman wants answers.

i'm sorry. waves of rain coming through, we know we need this. and in the summer months, we'll look back and kind of laugh, hopefully. we are not going to see any more major problems this morning, but we are still watching out for the potential of some flooding. we've already had five, six, seven inches of rain in the north bay, and when you get more on top of that, it just makes problems worse. looking at now lowering snow levels, in some of those north bay hills, but for the most part, this rain is light but let's talk about how much rain we've measured since wednesday. it's really unbelievable, when you look at these numbers, like venado hilltop mountain in the north bay measuring over 13 inches of rain since this storm started early on wednesday morning. san anselmo 8.5 inches of rain, bennen is lomond in the santa cruz mountains nearly eight inches of rain, mt. tam in the north bay almost eight inches of rain. richmond impressive 5.75" with

6:32 am
we're getting a good amount of rain coming down at least when it comes to when our live reports are beginning but right where we're looking at this is on drake road, as you can see the water taking over from the russian river as it's well above the flood stages at this point. video from river road you see the same type of situation with flooding affecting the first floor of homes in that area. the sonoma county sheriff's department issued an advisory for folks to evacuate, if you're in the low-lying areas, along the russian river, because you're on the river, susceptible to flooding. a lot of the homes you see when you drive around gueneville are on stilts and that's for the purpose of avoiding flooding because it happens so frequently. also folks are using canoes to get around. as we showed you drake road looks more like part of the russian rivering at this point. in the last half hour we spoke with a resident who said locals do a great job of being prepared. >> i'd say yes, do you.
6:33 am
definitely. >> reporter: just people like you thought people are more prepared? >> they're way prepared. a lot of the houses are raised up around here. they used to not be. they raised them up to get out of the water and boat around. i'm surprised there aren't boats from people in the high areas to get out. the cars are up here and up there. >> reporter: you'll see plenty of that as the morning goes along, as we take you back out here to the flooding situation, here in guerneville which is typical when it hits flood stages near the russian river, you want to be cautious when driving around the flooded roads but we're expected to stay in the flood stage in gueneville until 10:00 p.m. live in guerneville, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, pete. the russian river, where pete is, is of course one area of concern, but the napa river another issue in the north bay right now. overnight, flooding forced the shutdown of a major commute route. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell live in novato along

highway 37. the entire road closed? >> reporter: westbound direction of 37 is shut down. eastbound direction is not a factor but you can see westbound 37 is being diverted here at atherton avenue so people can continue on their trek to northbound or southbound 101, whichever direction they're headed because of flooding of the nearby novato creek. the estimated time of reopening is still about an hour and a half, so we're talking around 8:00, which would be, again, right in the middle of this morning's commute. here is the reason why, as you can see from nbc bay area sky ranger, yesterday's heavy rains flooded the fields north of highway 37, and caused a levee that contains the novato creek to break. could you see the wa the water eroded the foundation underneath a set of rail road tracks. cal trans initially shut down one lane of highway westbound 37 last night and since then shut down both lanes which is why you see the diversion behind me. some drivers are upset, they

thought it was recent work done on the road that was supposed to prevent this kind of thing from happening. >> they retrofitted it last year and fixed it, so it's going to be pretty hard. it's going to be pretty hard on us. so i think my reaction to it is, i'm a little disappointed. >> they raised the roadway, improved the drainage and that is holding and that is not the same thing we had happen out here today. >> reporter: back out here live it's the westbound direction of 37 that shut down here at atherton avenue. behind me you can see the flashing yellow lights, cal trans trucks are out here, further down the road, you can't see from right here, where the road is flooded over and waiting for that to subside. they're thinking they'll reopen around 8:00 this morning. reporting live in novato, ready ready, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest from there, bob. 6:35. still developing and new this morning, dispatch audio from police following a deadly standoff involving a u.p.s. truck in north san jose business park. it's a story we covered here for
