supermoon on the bay making it appear ligbrighter. a live look at temperatures where it is 29 below freezing in livermore, and 32 degrees in santa rosa, so we do have a lot of freezing temperatures that may make some of those bridges and overpasses icy, and then going throughout the day, more sunshine. we do keep that, but we also keep those cool afternoon highs. we'll talk more about that coming up and mike, you have a major crash in the north bay. >> i do, kari. overall, we're looking at the speed sensors, because traffic is still light right now, we're mostly at speed, a couple of minor crashes through oakland and a car fire popped over there in richmond parkway area. first we have the closure for highway 12 around beck, that's just east of interstate 80, and that will be an issue. c cordelia and west texas are the alternates to get around the area, the closure in place because of a major injury crash. it's not a manlgjor impact to o

morning commute on i-80. back to you. breaking news for you just in to our newsroom, senator bernie sanders is launching a second presidential bid. the vermont senator made it on public radio station saying he will run as a democrat. during that interview he also attacked president trump. >> i think the current occupant of the white house is an embarrassment to our country. i think he is a pathological liar every day. he is telling one lie or another. it gives me no pleasure to say that, but i also think he is a racist, a sexist, a homophobe. >> so far, president trump has not commented on sanders' run. nine democrats have formally declared that they are running, including california senator kamala harris, while nearly 20 others said they are considering running, including former vice president joe biden. happening today, former president barack obama is in the

we were' live in oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> a lot of big names in town for a great cause. >> a great cause, helping those young men. thank you very much, pete. 4:34. later today, former starbucks ceo howard schultz returns to the bay area, speaking at a sold out commonwealth club event at the herbst theater in san francisco. the last few weeks schultz hinted about running for president as an independent. new video shows smashed up security gates at reed airport in san jose. police say a suspected drunk driver crashed the gate and drove his pickup onto the field around 10:30 last night. a tow truck removed the damaged pickup truck. the county and airport this morning will work to repair that gate. more than a dozen people trapped for hours on a gondola at sea world in san diego are back on the ground this morning. this is brand new cell phone video of that rescue.

they were stranded for hours on board that ride, dangling above water. one of them an infant. crews could be seen climbing onto the gondola and rappel willing down to the water saving one person at a time. the temperature in the 40s. investigators say a huge gust of wind tripped a circuit breaker, shutting down the ride. police believe surveillance video from an antioch gas station may show two killers in it. it was august 19th after 3:00 a.m. watch the dodge charger, you see a man get out and then crouch next to it. police believe he was hiding, so the victim wouldn't see him. he and another man followed the victim to an apartment complex and killed him. here is another look at that dodge charger. it is a late model silver charger with black racing stripes. police also hope that maybe these sketches will look familiar. if you know who they are, call

police. a 90-year-old man in san jose gearing up for his court fight in what is being called the fitbit murder. in just a few hours, anthony aieolo will be in court for a plea hearing, he is charged in the death of his 68 stepdaughter, her fitbit device indicated she died while he visited her in her east san jose home. work to permanently fix the damage, though the richmond-san rafael bridge officially begins tonight. repairs were supposed to begin last night but pushed back due to presidents day. comes more than a week after chunks of the concrete fell from the upper deck. crews will replace expansion joints where the concrete crumbled. traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. much more ahead here on "today in the bay" including southwest airlines loves advertising free check bags program. the faa is looking into how the

longest stretch for the dow since 2017. on today's watch list, a report on the housing sector and earnings from retail giant walmart. the faa has been investigating southwest airlines for failing to properly track the weight of checked bags on its planes. the "wall street journal" is reporting they found mistakes with employee calculations leading to discrepancies when pilots compute takeoff weights. a dozen pounds to a thousand pounds above what the paperwork showed. and payless shoes has filed for bankruptcy today for the second time in as many years. the retailer confirming reports it will close all of its stores in north america by the end of may. payless is one of the most high-profile casualties as more and more consumers shop online. laura and marcus, back over to you. >> we were talking in the newsroom, we remember as a kid getting those shoes at payless because you grew out of them.

moon. if you didn't get a chance to catch it last night, that's okay, you'll have another chance tonight and driving in this morning, like i was saying earlier, i said wow, it looks so bright, because it normally is darker. >> you may not have that chance tonight because if the clouds roll in. >> oh. >> the moon will be there. >> the moon will be there but we may not be able to see it as clearly as this morning. so we've got a little bit more time left to get a view of that. here is a live look outside in fremont this morning, checking out what's happening around tesla and we have those clear skies and our temperatures start out very chilly. check this out, 34 degrees through 8:00, and then it starts to gradually warm up. we're only going to make it into the low to mid-50s today. so as you head out this morning, you do need a lot of extra layers once again. san martin down below freezing, 31 degrees. we're at 30 in ukiah. san francisco at 41, and it's 36 in palo alto.

that live look outside in san jose as you're getting dressed, you do need once again everything to keep you warm, from the hat to the coat, maybe even scarves and gloves, if you'll be outside for quite a while. our high temperatures pretty much matching where we were yesterday, reaching 54 in san jose, 55 in oakland and 56 today in santa rosa. this is the day we'll start to see some clouds moving in, especially tonight, as this system starts to move in from the north. this dropping down will bring in some even colder air for the end of the week, and also, initially some quick-moving showers. it doesn't look like a widespread, heavy rain producer but we start to see some spotty, light rain moving into the north bay late tomorrow morning, and then into the afternoon, still some spotty rain, once again we may not all see this, in fact, that's what the computer model is showing, very light and trace amounts of rain, as we go into tomorrow, and then moving out on thursday. and then our temperatures will stay chilly with some mid-50s, more sunshine on friday.

by saturday, it looked to be a little bit warmer, but there may be some more clouds moving in ahead of that next system, and it will bring us some rain on sunday. so we are going to still continue on with some much cooler than normal temperatures. mike, you have an update on now what's a car fire. >> originally a crash, then a car fire, and then no real update over the last few minutes. this is westbound 80, richmond parkway, get you oriented for the upper east shore freeway. no speed sensors slowing over the last 10 to 12 minutes and we saw slowing with the earlier car fire on the report. we'll monitor that. so far looks like things have calmed down and so has the rest of contra costa county. to the north, highway 12 has the closure just east of interstate 80 and a major injury crash but i-80 itself moves smoothly through fairfield. the arrows pointing out your commute direction. highway 37 to the richmond-san rafael bridge. highway 37 continues with the closure at atherton avenue

before you get to 101. atherton avenue is the alternate but so is the richmond to san rafael bridge. the volume should be lighter, some school districts are still off and the vacation yesterday are to almost all the schools around the bay. a smoother drive for the rest of your commute as we look across the san mateo bridge coming from 580, it's a smooth drive. a clear view through dublin, yesterday we had the fog and we continue over the water to the peninsula side with no problems over 92. back to you. >> thanks, mike. sfo is sinking. our investigative unit discovered that's creating problems with cracking in the runway, leading to flight delays and cancellations. here is our senior investigator stephen stock. >> reporter: you're seeing firsthand from the pilot's point of view what it looks like on final approach to land on the runway at san francisco international, especially after a recent rainstorm. notice the puddles of water along the runway and as the photos taken that same day show

repair patches everywhere. also notice the ponding of water on the taxiways and on the apron around them. there's an extensionive linear cracking called alligator cracking, clear skinz signs, structural engineers the ground underneath is settling and creating problems >> that means the sub base is starting to fall a little bit, and that is a little more extensive repair. you have to dig it up, pack it in and do more extensive repairs with it. >> reporter: in total some was closed down for a total of 90 days, one out of every four days of the year in 2018. during those days we calculated with the help of flight aware 1,100 canceled flights. we also talked to a scientist who worked with nasa to measure precisely how fast sfo is sinking. hear what he has to say, plus see our interactive map about where the repairs happen on these runways. that's on our interactive web page at
