"today in the bay" continues right now. a very good morning to you, and thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike's going to have a look at that commute for us this morning as a lot of people head back to work. first we talk about the temperatures out there, kari, so cold. >> that is what everybody's talking about, so chilly across the bay area and freezing in a lot of spots. now as you get ready to head out the door, bundle up. here is a live look at the golden gate bridge, rolling out of the north bay, where we had a lot of widespread freezing temperatures and headed down to the east bay, if you're on your way to the warm springs b.a.r.t. station, 34 degrees, yes, it is cold. we'll make it into the low 50s today, and at least we keep that sunshine. we'll talk about the rain returning to the bay area tomorrow. that's coming up in a few minutes and mike, gets you out there now on the roads. >> that's right, kari. chilly at the b.a.r.t. stations but hopefully no delays. we don't see any right now. the roadways we're seeing more traffic than yesterday, a lot of

folks still have the week off for their schools and the kids do ven we have lighter traffic flow likely for the south bay and parts of the east bay. a problem for the north bay here, this is highway 12, closure continues between beck and i-80. no problem for folks who use this portion of highway 12. west texas and cordelia is an option. i-80 is option. getting toward the bay bridge it's a smooth drive, but 24 minutes now from highway 4 to the bay bridge. there is a delay and because of that closure for highway 37, i'll outline that and also show you how i can tell folks are using the richmond-san rafael bridge as an alternate. back to you. >> thanks, mike. we continue to follow breaking news for you this morning, a vermont senator, bernie sanders, announcing a second presidential bid. sanders just releasing his campaign ad on twitter, and so far, president trump hasn't commented on sanders' run. nine democrats have formally declared they are running, icca

kamala harris. new this morning, the fbi's former acting director andrew mccabe is speaking out in an exclusive interview with the "today" show. he's discussing his explosive new memoir about his time in the trump administration. >> mccabe also opens up about the investigations in to president trump, which were started on his watch. "today in the bay's" tracie potts joins us live from washington with a look at what mccabe is saying this morning. tracie? >> >> he tells the "today" show one of the explosive allegations that the deputy attorney general rod rosenstein agreed to wear or offered to wear a wire into the white house to secretly record a conversation with president trump. that never happened but mccabe is defending his story saying it wasn't sarcastic, that rosenstein was serious about it. here is what he told savannah

the death of a mexican man detained by customs at the u.s. border. border patrol teams initially detained him more than two weeks ago at a rio grande station near mcallen, texas. a spokesman says that's when he first asked for medical attention. he died monday at the hospital where he was being treated. tonight the diocese of san jose plans to participate in a panel discussion about sexual abuse in the catholic church. bob redell is live in berkeley and this comes right after the diocese of oakland released the name of clergy acused of abuse there. >> reporter: correct, marcus. tonight bishop oscar kantu of the diocese of san jose will speech with other local church leaders here attet jesuit school of theology bind me in berkeley, focusing on the sex abuse scandal in the catholic church, this is taking place just before thursday's worldwide bishops conference in rome and after yesterday's release of names by the diocese of oakland.

the diocese released a list of 45 priests and other members of the clergy credibly accused of the sexual abuse of a minor. we spoke with a survivor of priest abuse who believes the diocese is still holding back information. >> if they were transparent they'd list the names of all the accused molesters in the diocese in just instead of just a handful. >> this is part of our process going forward. so when someone is credibly accused, and we get to the end of our process, they'll be added to the list. >> the diocese of oakland tells us they also have an independent reviewering looking at their files, processes and going to be coming up with their own independent report, expected out late spring and the diocese is anticipating that names could be added to that already list of 45. reporting live in berkeley, bob redell "today in the bay."

>> one that a lot of people are talking about. thank you, bob. our investigative unit uncovered stories of abuse byat lick priests across the bay area including revelations about priests in the san jose diocese late last year. to review that full report, head over to nbcbayarea.com. a 90-year-old man in san jose is gearing up for his court fight in what is being called the fitbit murder. in just a few hours, anthony allejo will be in court for a plea hearing. he was arrested last september in the stabbing death of his stepdaughter, 68-year-old karen navarra. her fitbit device indicated she died while he was visiting her in east san jose. >> 6:06 right now. it's a growing problem in the bay area, skyrocketing rent prices. happening today, hayward will talk about ways to stabilize living costs. city council members will discuss a staff recommendation to amend an ordinance. it gives tenants the right to mediation when landlords attempt

to raise rents by more than 5% a year. the proposed amendment would apply to all rental units constructed before 1979 and the council is expected to discuss potential changes to eviction regulations. several other bay area cities including fremont and oakland are considering taking similar steps. tonight, city leaders in berkeley plan to take a look at what it is calling a severe housing shortage. the city is working on pairing one landlords of more than 3,000 vacant properties, the goal is to get them on the market as soon as possible. to the's meeting gets under way at 6:00. this morning, sin city is turning into snow city. >> that's right, las vegas waking up to a blanket of snow covering the desert city. a rare snowfall came yesterday to city streets covering lawns and roads making for some traffic nightmares there. this is the first accumulation of measurable snow in the valley in the decade and there's more snow in the forecast. in addition to the inch or two already on the ground. the forecast is calling for

another one to three inches tomorrow. kind of an unusual sight but it gets cold in the dez pert. desert. >> it's cold enough to snow in the bay area but we don't have any systems yet. i'm watching out for the potential of icy spots on the roads, look at livermore, we've dropped down to 27 degrees! it is cold, below freezing in san martin as well as santa rosa, and ukiah and close elsewhere across the bay area. the morning drive from pittsburg it will be at 38 degrees and we keep the sunshine today, reaching into the low 50s. we'll talk about some more temperature trends and also the rain, coming up in a few minutes. mike, we have a look at the commute, it's starting to build. >> that's right, kari, especially over here, remember, highway 37 is still closed. ethan, our photographer is out here, the closure highway 37 at atherton avenue. atherton avenue is your alternate between 101 and 37.

trader also keep their eye on trade talks between the u.s. and china, those start back up in washington. march 1st deadline on those. president trump said he'll slap bigger tariffs oen chinese goods the first of the month. he may have to let that deadline slip. we talked about this fella before, machiochisan ceo of softbank, spread hundreds of dollars around silicon valley, almost like the monopoly man. funding startups like door dash, so much money we wondered if he knew what he was doing. now the "wall street journal" is reporting at least two sovereign funds are asking the same question. the softbank windfall may be drying up. hulu the online tv service is pushing its message it is hiring sports stars to spread the live sports news. that's not uncommon. what is uncommon is the ad campaign is straightforward that people are getting paid to promote hulu. take a look. >> hulu has live sports. hulu has live sports. hulu has live sports. hulu has live sports. hulu has live sports.

in the dog house. they're kind of too cute to blame there. >> cat burglar. >> exactly. >> what the package a chewy, maybe why they picked it up? all right this morning, as you get ready to head out, we have the really cool temperatures across the bay area. so as you get ready to head out, we do have those upper 20s and low 30s, yes, and this will be a day you have to bundle up and probably will stay that way, even into the afternoon. check out livermore, we're at 27 degrees, and it's 34 in fairfield. in san francisco, getting in on the upper 30s right now, so as you make your way out to the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station, we'll be at about 40 degrees at 8:00 and look at that, a lot of sunshine once again today, but we only make it up to about 54 degrees for the high there. and in all around the bay area, mid to upper 50s again. we are much cooler than normal, and we have another cold front dropping in from the north, so this will just reinforce that

cool air and keep it chilly throughout the rest of the week. this one really starved for moisture. we're not going to see a lot of heavy rain with this. it's spotty, moving in late morning into the north bay, and for the afternoon hours, we could see it hit or miss across the bay area, with some breezy winds, and then clearing out by thursday, we're back to our dry conditions, but also still really cool. looking at the possibility one computer model showing that most of us really won't even measure anything once this system passes, and then the areas that do measure rain will see just about trace amounts, very light, maybe close to a tenth of an inch farther to the north. if you have plans to head to the sierra over the next couple of days, the snow comes down throughout the morning tomorrow into the afternoon, and then it tapers off on thursday, bringing in about two to four inches of additional light snow. for us, we could see some low elevation snow mostly at 3,000 feet or above and we're not going to see that really measuring up to much. by thursday and friday we're

back in the mid-50s, morning temperatures in the 30s, and then watching another weak system dropping in on sunday. this will not really ruin your weekend plans, but it will be chilly at times, a chance of showers moving through especially on sunday. mike, you have more traffic than you did yesterday. >> much more traffic. although we'll have a lighter flow of traffic at certain portions of the bay, certain times of the day, because a lot of schools do have the week off, and so that will be a lighter factor hopefully. right now we're seeing a typical pattern of the south bay not really kicking in too much. we look toward the tri-valley and really over here the build across the san mateo and the dumbarton bridges westbound is your commute to the peninsula. more slowing through san leandro, but actually the castro valley y looks better than it did about 20 minutes ago so things are kind of calm right now. same thing for much of contra costa county. the upper east shore here westbound 80 is still slow, more folks are avoiding highway 37 and coming down here toward that richmond to san rafael bridge.

the bay bridge,l illuminated on the tuesday morning. the super snow moon is keeping things bright out there. it's cold as well. good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. let's head over to meteorologist kari hall who has been tracking those temperatures for us, kari, and each time they pop up, i'm like wow. >> me, too. because it has been really cold. here is a live look outside at the golden gate bridge, all clear skies, and even in san francisco we have some nirts to greet you as you head out the door. livermore down to 27 degrees and we may have some icy spots on the elevated roadways, some bridges and overpasses so watch out for that. below freezing in san martin,% of the north bay, valleys and santa rosa now 31 degrees. as you head out the door, martinez will stay in the 30s through about 8:00, and then see it gradually warming up. we'll be in the mid-50s by early afternoon. it will be nice to get that sunshine and tomorrow the clouds

will be here we'll talk about spotty rain in the forecast tomorrow coming up. mike, you're tracking two new crashes. >> more traffic than yesterday but not as much as we often see on a tuesday. looking toward hayward and san jose the first crash south 808 looks like it got over to the shoulder past the 92 interchange. "a" street a crash cleared at 92, more traffic across 92 that's the san mateo bridge and of course the dumbarton bridge bridge as well. north and west of your commute direction, it's a lighter build but just kicking in for the south bay and north 280 i'm tracking around the wolfish out there is a crash there and someone spilled their tools across the freeway. reports are they're running in and out of lanes, be very careful, don't do that, folks! we'll track that, hopefully that clears from the report without incident. back to you.

well. pete suratos joins us live in oakland with a look at what's happening today. pete? >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, laura. former president barack obama will be speaking here in oakland. behind me at the scottish wright center they set up for the town hall he'll be speaking at latest today part of the my brother's keeper prompconference. some of this started yesterday, there was a community event out there in west oakland and latder in t later in the day we heard from quarterback richard sherman and london breed who spoke at the scottish rights center as a part of the mbk conference. more than 250 my brother's keeper chapters will be in oakland as a part of this three-day conference. topics at the conference on the next couple of days will cover efforts to reduce youth violence, impactful mentoring, masculinity, and also perspectives from community-based leaders. the my brother's keeper organization was launched five years ago by the former president in response to the shooting death of trayvon

stanford police are investigating three recent sexual assault reports. each of the incidents took place on campus. police say two of the allegations involve women who were unable to give their consent and in all three cases the victims informed school officials who then contacted police. in each case police say the women never chose to file a report and each woman prefers to remain anonymous. >> 6:35 right now. police believe surveillance video from an antioch gas station may show two killers in it. it was august 19th after 3:00 a.m. watch the dodge charger, you see a man get out and then crouch next to it. police believe he was hiding, so the victim wouldn't see him. he and another man police say followed the victim to an apartment complex and killed him. here is another look at that dodge charger. it is a late model silver charger with black racing stripes. police also hope that maybe these sketches will look familiar. if you know who they are, call police.

southwest airlines is known for its generous checked bag policy but new for us this morning, the airline may be in trouble for how they weigh those bags once they get to cargo, and this really could pose a danger to your safety. kris sanchez joins us live from mineta, san jose. we also are worried about this. >> reporter: this is something that the faa is trying to get to the bottom of. they are wondering whether or not the way that southwest weighs all of the baggage that goes underneath the plane is accurate enough so that a pilot knows what kind of weight they're working with in the event of an emergency. in just the last hour, i did get a statement from southwest airlines, which confirms that the faa has an open letter of investigation. the federal aviation administration confirmed this year-long investigation to the "wall street journal" as well. so here is the deal. southwest depends on a manual count of bags by ground crews. you've probably seen them counting those bags from your window seat. then they calculate using an

average bag weight before loading. the faa estimates that, in about a third of flights, that could lead to uneven weight distribution between the plane's front and rear cargo bays, which then could impact pilot response in an engine emergency. the faa has not yet released any disciplinary action or issued any fines, and there are no accidents linked to this problem again at this point. now, in that statement that southwest airlines sent me this morning, it says "the letter of investigation addresses an issue that southwest voluntarily reported to the faa last year, since that time southwest has implemented controls and enhanced procedures to address our weight and balance program concerns and we've shared those measures with the faa." it goes on to say "there is no current information to support the estimate that one-third of southwest flights are dispatched with a weight imbalance inaccuracy." southwest airlines is reportedly rolling out a computerized scanning system for all bags on the tar pack by the end of this

year, what impact that would have on this investigation we don't yet know but we'll continue to follow it for you. in san jose, at mineta san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> very concerning. thanks, kris. tonight, leaders in santa clara will hear a presentation on california's high speed rail project. the presentation comes following governor gavin newsom announcing he plans to scale back the high-speed rail line between san francisco and los angeles. the governor says there isn't a path for the project but his office is fully committed to it. tonight's meeting gets under way at 5:00. work to permanently fix the damaged richmond-san rafael bridge officially starts tonight. repairs were supposed to begin last night but they were pushed back due to presidents day, comes more than a week after chunk of concrete fell from the upper deck. crews will replace expansion joints where the concrete crumbled. construction will begin at 9:00

tonight. traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. but at least it will be moving through, so you could get through. right, mike? >> yes, that's good news. we want to see that repair work. behind me, a big truck there, this is traffic reduced to one lane in one direction eastbound 37, one lane is open. westbound 37 no lanes are open. folks are diverting from 37 to atherton avenue, get you out to our maps, we'll talk about where ethan is monitoring the traffic flow right here westbound coming out of vallejo, your commute direction bogs down around atherton. be very careful. you're not on a freeway right there, that is a residential area for some at least in a lot of smaller traffic flow expected there. also richmond-san rafael bridge west 580 sees more volume of traffic as does the upper east shore freeway. overall, things move smoothly around the bay. the crash in hayward did clear 880 at 92. >> that's good. what else is good, let's talk about the weekend. it's always a good thing. >> we're making our progress

toward the weekend and as we make plans, it's going to be a drier one than the last weekend we had, although there will be some rain chances in there for sunday. it's not going to be raining off and on the whole weekend. it's still going to be cool, we're looking at highs in the low to mid-50s from san francisco to the inland valleys. if you're planning to head to the sierra, kirk wood is looking good for your travel day on friday, although getting back, you may have some issues, because there will be some snow coming down, so make sure you have the tire chains, and allow some extra time to get back to the bay area. and then as we look at russian river valley, there will be a chance of some rain late saturday night into early sunday, and overall, temperatures stay cool, with highs in the mid-50s. in santa cruz, it will be mostly cloudy on saturday, up to 55 degrees. sunday a little bit more sunshine there, and 54 degrees. let me know where you're headed. i'm@karihallweather on facebook and instagram. we'll talk about today's temperature trend coming up in

fire in san mateo, an 86-year-old woman was pulled from the blaze by firefighters, who quickly administered cpr, but sadly, it just wasn't enough. she died in the blaze. six to seven other people were also in that home, when it caught fire. they're now displaced. it started at a home on humboldt street near second avenue. nbc bay area sky ranger launching to get you aerials of that fire. we know that it has been contained. the cause so far is under investigation. quarter to 7:00. new video just in to our newsroom showing smashed up security gates at reed hill view airport in san jose. police say a suspected drunk driver crashed the gate and drove his pickup onto the field around 10:30 last night. officers arrested that man. a tow truck removed the damaged pickup truck. this morning, the county and airport will work to repair the gate. one youtuber is raising questions this morning about the website calling it a potential gateway to spread child

pornography, all a few clicks from what are legally posted videos. we're not showing you youtuber matt watson's video, it's filled with suggestive images but shows how quickly users can connect with potentially questionable videos of young girls simply from the algorithms pushing users from one video to the next. the website tech crunch got wind of watson's video, did its own test and found possible red flags especially in light of recent scandal uncovered questionable youtube video showing children. watson believes adult viewers are connecting in the common sections and may even be trading child pornography. youtube sent tech crunch a response saying it's reviewing watson's claims. the company believes most of the videos in question are innocent recordings of children doing everyday things and itti issued

wind tripped a circuit breaker, shutting down the ride. >> 6:47. the president has yet another challenger this morning. >> scott mcgrew, bernie sanders is running again. >> again, sanders made it official, marcus, earlier this morning. we sent a push alert to your phones the moment he did. sanders says he will once again run for the democratic nomination for president in 2020. sanders, of course, the liberal democrat from vermont, who caught the imagination of many in the last go-round, before ultimately losing the primary to hillary clinton. so we're going to add sanders to our long list of democratic candidates. voters seem more receptive to sanders' left of center ideas but many candidates adopted that position and already running. california and more than a dozen other states have filed a lawsuit to block president trump's declaration of emergency. the suit says the president is wrong when he says it's an emergency. the lawsuit also says diverting money away from current projects

would hurt the states that are listed in the suits. in an early morning tweet the president said "as i predicted, 16 cities," he means state there, of course" led mostly by open forber democrats and the rad cat left have filed a lawsuit in, of course, the ninth circuit. california, the state that has wasted billions of dollars on their out-of-control fast train, with no hope of completion, seems to be in charge." well, here are the states involved and president trump is almost certainly right. that suit was intentionally filed in the northern district of california, because if his order is blocked there, it appeals to the ninth circuit, he's right, he's had a string of tough luck there, and then on to the supreme court. side note, supreme court just told us minutes ago justice ginsburg returns to the bench today. meanwhile, expect congress to move as well. the house will likely call for a vote to overturn the order, that by law will force the vote in the senate, if it passes both houses, the president can still

veto it. other thing to watch for today, former interim fbi director andrew mccabe will be on the "today" show and will reveal he told the congressional gang of eight that the fbi was investigating trump and nobody objected. we'll be watching that and everything else that happens today including the declaration of space force today. you can follow me on twitt twitter i'm @scottmcgrew. new today a hiker who survived hours in quick sand in the brutal cold, is sharing his story. 34-year-old ryan osmond was hiking in zion national park in utah saturday when one of his legs became trapped in the middle of a creek. miles away from cell phone service his girlfriend left him with warm clothing and hiking for three hours before being able to call 911. >> i tried not to freak out, because i didn't really have a choice of what to do. i was stuck, and i knew no one was around, so i just knew that

san martin. bundle up as you head out, especially if you're going to be standing out there on the plat form, maybe waiting for the dublin b.a.r.t. and it's going to be at 30 degrees, and then looking at some low 50s by lunch time, still going to be cool, but it will be nice and sunny. we have a little bit while longer of the sunshine before this cold front drops down from the north. we will start to see some clouds increasing overnight and early tomorrow, and then as we go hour by hour, it shows that this next cold front moving in will not bring us any widespread heavy rain. it will be spotty, starting out late tomorrow morning into the afternoon, and it's going to be out of here by thursday morning, as we see our skies clearing, as we wake up on thursday morning. this model shows how much rain we may see and most of us may not measure anything. where we measure lane it's light up to a tenth of an inch which is not heavy. friday highs in the mid-50s and
