hit. this started late last night, late tuesday night when someone hit up a separate auto zone on coddle road and within 30 to 45 minutes they broke into this auto zone on almaden expressway and that o'reilly radio parts across the street on branham. around 2:00 this morning, there were a group of several men who had their faces covered, they broke into a vape shop called the abyss vapor lounge. staff at a veterinary hospital interrupted the burglary, the men took off in a car and an hour later a fifth location was hit, a liquor store at tully and king. law enforcement did find a man inside, they deployed a sheriff's k9 who bit the man and helped police take him into custody. we've reached out to san jose police to ask them that question, are all five of these or at least some of these burglaries that took related. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay" >> very busy morning for police. thanks for the update.

this morning, president trump is denying a report he tried to put an ally in charge of the justice department's case against his long time attorney michael cohen. nbc bay area's tracie potts joins us live from washington with more on that story. good morning, tracie. >> hi there, good morning. so the "new york times" is alleging that president trump called up the justice department and tried to switch out the person in charge of the investigation of his former attorney. prve happened. according to the "new york times," president trump called up then acting attorney general matt whitaker and asked for a change. the paper reports mr. trump wanted to put an ally in charge of the case against his michael cohen. the fbi was investigating hush money payments cohen made to women for mr. trump. >> reporter: did you ask acting attorney general whitaker to change the leadership in the

the fed as a whole has indicated it is done raising rates for now, but it has voting members and we're going to get a peek at hat way, that d know how many on they should keep interest rates low. google thought it was announcing good news when it says its nest security system would soon be able to act as a home assistant. you can talk to it. except consumers hadn't realize the nest security system had a microphone in it. google says the microphone don't supposed to be a secret. it's just nobody knew they had a microphone. a new study from the national buru research says facebook may make us spend more money because we want to have the same lifestyle as our friends, what economists have always called keeping up with the joneses. it used to mean when a neighbor gets a new car, you get a new car, too. now you see pictures of friends on cruises or at restaurants and causes you to spend more money.

we have some rain here and more sierra snow. this is walnut creek creek as you get ready to head out the door, the clouds act as a blanket to keep the cold from dipping into the 30s. it's going to be about 44 degrees at 7:00 and then going from the mid-40s to the mid-50s today. this is the weather we've see recently, where we will not make it out of the 50s, when we should be in the low 60s, and we have yet again another cold front that will be moving in. here is a look at storm ranger, we're going to see some spotty showers moving in, as this front arrives. eukagain moving through and it's making its progress toward the bay area, and will start to move into the north bay first, but overall, this system is really starved for moisture, so we are not going to see a lot of rain, but we do still have that chance as we go throughout the day. here we are at 9:30, we see some scattered rain moving into the south bay as well as parts of the north bay, and also along

the coast, and then we start to see it tapering off, as we go into tonight and then our rain may add up to about 0.2 of an inch of rain at the most. the sierra getting additional light snow. many of the models showing about two to four inches of snow over the next couple of days and we'll see it add up more, going into early next week, with more storm systems moving in, but check out our percentage of normal for our central sierra, doing the best looking at 154%og season, and we are seeing some more snow in the forecast. we're going to be in the upper 50s tomorrow, some breezy winds, and mostly sunny skies, once the system passes, and then looking at another chance of rain on sunday, and again on tuesday. mike, you're tracking a couple of mine issue minor issues. >> fremont sunol area we have a

>> the first is because of the metering lights and the crash is in one of the right lanes as you get past the toll plaza, just past the toll plaza, it involves a motorcycle. folks were likely slowing to watch and the third reason is of course because we have that backup forming out of the maze and it is the toll plaza at the right time, and so we had the backup forming earlier, a crash complicated things a metering lights slow you down further. that's it for now. new for you this morning, the california dmv admits customs have access to information that could get some people deported. "today in the bay'"''s" kris sanchez has more. >> reporter: we are talking about the california driver's licenses immigrants can get so they can drive legally and thus get insurance. the whole idea when these were launched was to make everybody safer on the roadway. assembly bill 60, a.b. 60 passed in 2013 stated this was not to

be used "as evidence of the holder's citizenship or immigration status or as the basis for criminal investigation, arrest or detention." our sister station nbc san diego talked with a man who was pulled over by immigration and customs agents and now faces deportation. he says he knows that i.c.e. had access to his driver's license information because that was the picture they used to identify him. a deputy director for the dmv explained that the agency does not keep a separate database for a.b. 60 licenses and all of the dmv records can be accessed by outside agencies through the department of justice. she adds that the searchable information does not include immigration status. a spokesperson for i.c.e. told nbc san diego that i.c.e. cannot access thatdmv database directly but wouldn't explain how they accessed it indirectly, saying that it is law enforcement sensitive.

several california lawmakers have been looking into this issue, and are now asking the governor and the attorney general to take a look at how this information might be used, and how it might deter people from trying to drive legally and keeping the roads safer. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thanks so much for that update. 5:33 right now. happening today, state lawmakers will make a push to reduce the consumption of "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live from walnut creek with some of the details on this one. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. state lawmaker also make this push by introducing five bills later today and in looking at the bills, it's more than just a soda tax we're talking about this time around. let's talk about these five bills that are up for consideration. that first bill calls for capping the size of sugary drinks in unsealed containers at 16 fluid ounces, applied for

restaurants and grocery stores. the idea is potentially a way to deal with what's considered the supersize phenomenon of the average soda. the second bill calls for labeling the sugary drinks with health risk warnings, similar to what you'd see on tobacco products. a third bill wants to prohibit supermarkets, convenience stores and retail stores from placingc. some people call that impulse buying, so lawmakers claim soda companies pay prime money for that real estate for the placement of those products as you're checking out from a grocery store or any other examples. fourth bill would bar soda companies from offering promotional deals to lower the price of the drinks to customers, and the fifth and final bill would be a tax on the drinks, but that tax would be used for programs to offset the health effects of drinking sugary drinks. here is what folks at this 7-eleven in walnut creek are telling me about those bills. >> me personally, i disagree with it. i see it more aseying to bring

new video showing the aftermath of a deadly cras this unfolded last night in otay mesa, outside san diego. border patrol agents say a man and a woman crossed the border and quickly got into an awaiting car. the car led agents on a chase that hit speeds of 100 miles per hour. the car struck a turning truck, the two men in front died. the woman is in critical condition. and new details on the effort to block the president's national emergency border wall declaration, the american civil liberties union filed a new lawsuit in san francisco, the aclu argues there's no emergency to justify the president's actions. thsu aused the tru administration of violating constitutional limits on presidential authority. the state of calor this lawsuit was filed in california, probably no surprise to the president. >> and likely part of a strategy, scott.

we haven't seen temperatures like that it seems like in forever. so we are going to still be cooler than normal today, reaching into the mid-50s for our afternoon highs, and then as we check out storm ranger, that's the red scan, our mobile doppler radar showing no rain for the bay area but then you head farther to the north around eurek eureka, showers are passing by, it is scattered there and where we have the higher elevations we're seeing some snow. we could see some snow over s of the bay area peaks going into the day but there's not a lot of rain with this system. so it's going to be very hit or miss, going into late morning and early afternoon, and you just want to make sure you're prepared in case one of these quick-moving showers passes by where you are at the time and we'll see things clearing out tonight. not all of us will see the rain and where we do, it will be very light. it shows the highest amount around morgan hill at about 0.2 of an inch of rain. just where some of the cells pop
