the quake is centered in a remote location. back here in the bay area, nerves are frayed in oakland, as teachers get ready to start day two of their district-wide strike. talks of merging schools to save money had parents angry, school kids anxious, and oakland unified district staff frustrated. last night superintendent dr. kyla johns trammell met with parents. as sergio quintana reports she was nearly shouted out at the meeting. >> reporter: the superintendent described another round of campus consolidations. >> we're in the process right now of merging alliance and elm hurst community prep. >> reporter: parents shouted her down not happy with the prospect of more schfact-finding committee indicated to the teachers that we don't have a lot of money. we are in a situation where we are already cutting money, going into next year's budget before

we factor in any kind of raises for anybody. >> reporter: school spokesman john sasaki says the district offers teachers 8% raise, up from 5% it offered months ago. teachers maintained a demand of 12%. lots of students joined teachers on the picket line, the union president conxwrat lated members and families for their efforts on this first day of picket lines. >> strikes are won in the streets, not at the bargaining table, so we need strong lines like we had today. >> reporter: parents who did not want to cross the picket lines opting not to take their kids to schools, instead, took them to one of more than a dozen places called solidarity sites, which offered day care, some education, supervised physical activities and even lunch. one parent brought meals for kids at the salvation army site. >> the salvation army has been gracious to give lunch to them but they don't have breakfast, so i'm bringing them some breakfast. >> reporter: strike negotiators are scheduled to meet again. sergio quintana, "today in the bay." >> we'll continue to follow the latest developments on the

oakland strike, and any potential deal in the works, both on air and online and that includes our website. check out our breaktown on how much oakland teachers make, compared to teachers in other districts right there at nbcbayarea.com. in just a few hours, a south bay man found guilty of killing his parents returns to court for sentencing. hasib bin golumrabi faces a sentence of life without parole. a jury found him guilty of the 2016 murders of his parents in their home. he represented himself, you might remember, in what was at times a reportedly bizarre and rambling defense. golumrabi has a younger brother who was preerl cleared of the same murder charges in the case because of insufficient evidence. it is 4:34 and developing now, actor jussie smollett is out on bail. he was reportedly on the set of his fox show "empire" last night, after being released from jail. he apologized to the cast and crew. police say the santa rosa native

paid two brothers $3,500 to stage an attack on him last month, all to promote his career. smoel e smollett original smollett's high-profile attorney said "mr. smollett is a young man of impeccable character and integrity who fiercely and solemnly maintains his innocence" but chicago city leaders think otherwise and they're furious. >> absolute justice would be an apology to this city, that he smear smeared, admitting what he did. >> reporter: smollett faces a felony charge for filing a false police report. 4:35 now, in just a few hours the two men charged in oakland's deadly grosseship warehouse fire are court, derek almena aax face 36 manslaughter during the 2016 fire. this morning, a hearing will be

held on the use of evidence in that case. both almena and harris are set to go on trial in april. a business owner in los gatos says a president trump supporter has crossed the line, the co-owner of a yellow brick road jewelry store said real estate agent cindy sheehan taped a sign on his front window last night. witnesses saw the group says they were wearing make america great again hats and chanting outside. the business owner says this goes back to an incident months ago where he voiced his opposition to the group. things have escalated since. >> they say i don't believe in free speech, and i'm an eye american, just because i don't support trump, right. i'm allowed to support whoever i want to support. >> after taping the sign to his store window a witness shot video of the group at a nearby bar. we talked to cindy sheehan. she said they used in would not

vandalism. to a disturbing discovery in a contra costa county canal. a dead dog was found near medburn road in the unincorporated community of clyde. they are asking for your help to figure out what led to the small brown dog's death, a terrier found tethered to his crate, which was covered in green nylon covering. the dog weighed approximately 15 pounds. authorities are trying to piece together the mystery, first by finding the dog's owners. downtown san francisco going to look a lot different today. lower stockton street reopened late yesterday after seven years between geary and ellis street. construction crews had been working on the central subway. it's expected to be completed this december, when computmuter will take muni from the fourth street cal station all the way to chinatown. >> wouldn't that be nice, not to have to park in chinatown. >> especially this weekend, the big aparade. > come up next, apple is behind the plans for an apple

disappointing economic data, fueling fears of a potential economic slowdown. investors are also watching the latest round of high-level trade talks between the u.s. and china. apple has drawn up a blueprint for its own foldable device in a patent application published last week. this describes a display between with hinges that can fold in half or thirds. the screen can be used in phones, tablets, laptops or wearable devices but the application only means the idea is out there. it hasn't been approved just yet. ride share news, lyft hass the same vehicle to split the cost of a ride and not subject to search pricing. s always requires riders to wal designated pickup spot and may drop them off walking distance of their final destination. lyft said about 35% of its rides are shared. laura, i know you're more of a limo person but the rest of us,

scarf and a coat will serve you well because it will be a very chilly start, but as we look at our high temperatures, very much like yesterday, we're heading back into the mid to upper 50s again today, and we get to keep that sunshine for a little while longer, but we do see a storm system developing out there over the pacific, and that will be another atmospheric river, but it won't be targeted across the bay area for quite a while. we see it moving into eureka and ukiah, as we go into sunday, as well as early next week. we're on the outer fringes of this from sunday into monday. we may not see much rain at all, until this system starts to drop down on tuesday into wednesday. then it looks like we get a quick round of some rain moving in, could bring in some pretty decent rainfall totals for the ast part, we're looking at half of an inch of rain or less, for areas south of the golden gate bridge. then you head to the north, and those rainfall totals will be much higher, santa rosa close to an inch, but maybe something like three inches for ukiah, and

areas farther north. so we are going to be tracking this, any slight shifts in that atmospheric river could drastically change our forecast. otherwise, we're going to enjoy a nice clear weekend, with some highs in the upper 50s, a few more clouds tomorrow, and then those north bay rain chances on sunday. i'll be watching that for you, with another update and mike, you have folks already waiting at the bay bridge. >> i do, kari, just like yesterday, we have all cash lanes except for two open, this one on the left approach, that is presenting a little more of a backup. on the right approach, folks changing lanes out of the longer backup just off the fast track lanes moving over. they may have just opened that one on the right side. we'll track that, it's light. light volume throughout the approach, no slowing, a little slowing eastbound highway 24, just past highway 13 and that sometimes happens about this time of day, so we'll track that. so far it's just a crew that i know about going through the area. no crashes there, and no other oming s except for the one on through the altamont around grant line road, no problem.

back to you. 4:48. nearly $1.25 million over three years is how much a major tech company recently paid a silicon valley city and it's not a donation. >> it is to cover the salaries of two city employees who work in the department that regulates the very company. investigative reporter liz wagner has been looking into an arrangement that's raising some eyebrows. >> we learned the tech titan's money is funding the cost of a traffic engineer and transportation manager in a growing south bay city. now we investigate, does this deal pose a conflict of interest? we showed the funding agreement to a government ethicist at santa clara university. she points out the corporation has business before this city and says even if it's not the intended effect, the aing rahment gives the appearance arrangement gppearance that the company may be trying to buy influence with local officials. >> in situations where the gift is designed specifically to pay for somebody's salary, how is that going to affect the employee whose salary is being paid for? can you serve two masters?
