have to scrape some frost off the windshield before you head out, headed out to the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station, a heavy coat needed with 40s and the sunshine warms us up. a look at the microclimates coming up and mike, you're taking us to the richmond sav bridge. >> folks are still working on the bridge. behind me flashing lights may be moving the crews right now from the overnight roadwork. right now consider one lane for each direction the upper and the lower deck each on 580, with the overnight road crew continuing of course that expansion joint repair work, and that will continue again overnight for the next week or so. the rest of the bay shows an easy drive, no problems through contra costa county, no delays. a little slowing out of the altamont pass for west 580 and that's about it. that's a great start to this friday so we hand it back to you, laura. today marks day two of the oakland teachers strike. they'll return to the picket lines in just a few hours. we have a live look at the haven's corps middle school in east oakland. a news conference will happen there at 7:00 a.m.

the two sides will meet for more negotiations today. school spokesman john sasaki said the district offered teachers an 8% raise during talks this week, that is up from 5% it offered months ago. teachers want a 12% raise. "today in the bay's" pete suratos will have a live report on the impact on students, ahead at 5:30. an irs analyst in san francisco faces charges in connection with the case against michael cohen. john frey is accused of leaking information about cohen's bank records to lawyer michael abnationa avenatti who represents stormy daniels. cohen admits to paying her off to keep her quiet before the 2016 election, cohen prepares to testify to congress next week, but of course, that is not all that's consuming capitol hill this morning. back-and-forth including one trump associate who is talking and who is not. michael cohen, the president's long time attorney who after some delays is set to testify publicly on capitol hill next week. >> mr. cohen, why were you on the hill today? >> reporter: michael cohen, the man headed to prison for hiding money to the government, lying to congress and paying off women for donald trump on capitol hill, preparing to testify in public before the house overnight committee wednesday. >> he knows a lot of secrets and prepared to go public and talk about them. >> reporter: are you prepared for testimony next week? >> reporter: some of whacko hen knows will only be shared behind closed doors with the house and senate intelligence committees before and after wednesday's hearing. another trump associate, roger stone, walked out of federal court ordered not to talk about his case at all, after apologizing for posting a photo of the judge with a target next

to her face. stone is charged with witness tampering, obstruction, and making false statements in the russia investigation. russia special counsel robert mueller is expected to report any day now. attorney general william barr will decide if any part of that report goes public. >> it should be shared first and foremost with congress, and then with the american public, in the broadest way possible. >> the american people do want answers and i think mueller wants to give them those answers. >> reporter: the investigation is expected to wrap up in the next week. but there are other investigations, the justice department and others looking into the president's business, finances, his campaign, his inaugural committee, his charity, those are completely separate, and probably won't be over when mueller reports. back to you. >> certainly a lot to talk about. thank you very much, tracie. also a conservative activist is speaking out about being

punched in the face on campus at uc berkeley. hayden williams appeared on fox news last night and says he was working as a field representative for the leadership institute helping a conservative group set up their message out on sprawl plaza when a political argument turned very violent. >> on tuesday, i was invited to uc berkeley's camp to us help a conservative group, turning point, recruit new members, and while i was there, some students took offense to our sign that we had. >> a uc berkeley police issued an alert, asking anyone who can identify that attacker to contact them, if you want to see that picture, find that on our website. it is 5:04 right now. the sixth vallejo police officers who shot and killed a california rapper are expected to be back on full duty by next week. according to "the east bay times" the department is refusing to release shooting records of willie mccoy's death until april. they say the investigation is still in the early stages. investigators found mccoy asleep with a gun in his lap, at a

drive-through more than a year ago. lawyers for his family say he was shot 25 times. new this morning, a vallejo couple accused of making meth into pills shaped like president trump and the tesla logo, according to "the chronicle" they used the elder care facility they ran to manufacture the pils the pills. they sold the pills as mdma but they had actual meth in them. both face several charges. police in the tri-valley are on the lookout after a series of car break-ins that head to a chase. police say suspects spotted the patrol car and took off, at one point the suspect drove onto the sidewalk and then hopped onto 680. police chased the car, but stopped after it became dangerous for other drivers. there were several other break-ins yesterday alone in danville and san ramon.

is this year's grand marshal. as always, an amazing event. san francisco, a lot of the fun and we're going to have some cool weather with some clouds rolling by in time for the chinese new year parade tomorrow evening. low 50s, and then as you get ready to head out the door this morning, in walnut creek, mostly clear skies, but it is very chilly out there. be prepared for those chilly temperatures that will stick around for a little while longer, some mid-30s as you get ready to head out the door. we'll be headed into the mid-50s today as we keep that sunshine as we go into this afternoon. we are going to be tracking the changes in the forecast, going into the weekend, some possible showers, we'll talk more about that and mike, you're taking us to the berkeley curve. >> i am, kari. i heard about a possible steaming or smoking vehicle over here at the berkeley clururve t counter commute, away from the bay bridge. don't see any problems, don't see slowing or anything, we just see the lights so that's great. there's oakland and tail lights with the curve there, that's folks getting off the east shore

snow. it will be amazing to see in person. we'll talk about our next storm moving into the bay area and what that means for the sierra, come ing up in less than five minutes. coming toward us flashing lights but no incidents reported, i think that's a crew moving into or out of position, they're done for construction there and we have a smooth drive. we'll show you what the rest of the bay looks like, coming up. good morning. i'm frank holland at cnbc global headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is poised to open up higher this morning, dow futures up more than 110 points. yesterday stocks fell with the dow breaking a three-day win streak and the nasdaq snapping an eight-day stretch. traders are reacting to some disappointing economic data, fueling fears of a potential economic slowdown. investors are also watching the latest round of high-level trade talks between the u.s. and china. some tech news. apple has drawn up a blueprint for its own foldable device in a patent application published last week.

if you use the what'sapp messaging app. the makers confirm there is a bug that lets anyone bypass its touch i.d. or face i.d. features. anyone can do it using the iphone share function. facebook owns whatsapp and promises it's working on a fix. a big blow for tesla. "consumer reports" no longer recommending the model 3 sedan because buyers say they are having reliability issues. tesla's stock fell more than 2% yesterday. tesla says it's making improvements, and for the first time this year, subaru topped the list of best mid sized suvs with the ascent. the forrester was named best compact suv. toyota dominated with four cars making "consumer reports '"list, including the camera, prius, ford f-150 pickup truck was the number one pick for trucks. if you find yourselves wasting away in margaritaville today you'll have a pretty good

freezing farther to the north, ukiah at 28 degrees. upper 30s as you head out to so make sure you're wearing something nice and warm and the heater clicked up on full blast. upper 30s through 8:00 and we'll see temperatures getting milder by noon at 52 degrees, eventually headed up into the upper 50s today, very much like yesterday and we turn our attention to wet weather that will start to move in by the end of the weekend. here is the next storm and it will tap into deep subtropical moisture and enhance the rainfall, but it won't be specifically targeted over the bay area, at least not initially. we are going to see this right over northern california, and then parts of the north bay may see some spotty showers by the end of the weekend, sunday afternoon, we're going to start to see some rain moving in, and then we continue to see that heavy rainfall near ukiah, and eureka and farther to the north, and then we'll start to see it sliding down across the bay area, fairly quickly from

tuesday into wednesday, and most of us are going to see anywhere about a half of an inch of rain or less for areas south of the golden gate bridge, but then when you head farther to the north, that's where the highest rainfall totals will be. and then speaking of rainfall, now california very small percentage of the state still in a drought, no more drought conditions, not even abnormally dry, after all the rain that we've had from the late january to early february time frame, and we do of course still have some more rain in the forecast. the next storm system moving in will be warmer, so we're not going to see as much of the sierra snow and we're also going to have some warmer temperatures moving in, even though we will still have some rounds of rain. so really good to see all of this going on in the forecast, and we have a little while longer to enjoy the sunshine. kris and laura? >> we'll take advantage of that, thanks. coming up next, a north bay man -- a north bay woman who spent her life helping others now needs some help of her own.

new york city. it happened yesterday, when a beam stored under an elevated subway track crashed through his front windshield. thankfully it went straight into the empty passenger seat. the driver is said to be shaken up but otherwise okay. it is 5:23 right now. continuing coverage this morning of the controversy surrounding an upcoming documentary about michael jackson. his estate has just filed a lawsuit aimed at stopping its release. the documentary speaks with two men who claim that jackson sexually abused them at his neverland ranch. the suit claims that the film violates a 1992 deal with hbo to not disparage jackson, in exchange for airing one of his concerts. hbo has not commented on the lawsuit, but has repeatedly defended the documentary. some fighters aren't in the boxing ring or in the mma. some walk among us every single day. we want to introduce you to 75-year-old marilyn hertzog. the former california dairy

princess lived in sonoma county all of her life and is fighting to stay alive. about three years ago she found out she needs a kidney. since then, she's been doing ten hours of dialysis at home every single day. about a week ago, her family and friends organized a facebook page and website calling miracle for marilyn. she's worked for years at helping other people, and local organizations raise money, and now she needs a new kidney not only to save her life but so that she can give more. >> because this has happened to me and i have skills in fund-raising, and i would really, really love to be able to put on a major event, and that's going to take energy, and i know i can do that, if i get a new kidney. >> all right, so if you want to find out if you are a match for marilyn we put links to her email and facebook page on our website nbcbayarea.com. >> we wish her well. it is 5:24.

san francisco mayor london breed celebrating black history month, speaking at james lick middle school students this afternoon about african-american heritage. the event starts at 2:15. also in san francisco, new trash cans will soon be installed. >> the more than a thousand little black boxes will see trash can contents in 3-d as digital journalist jonathan bloom shows us, it will alert the city when the cans are getting full. >> in the city of san francisco, we have over 3,000 cans. >> when a can overflows, it is sort of a domino effect. >> just like graffiti, garbage attracts garbage. >> this is a sensor, the breakdown of the containers, ranging from green to yellow to red. >> so the department thinks this will cut down on the amount of trash on city sidewalks and reduce littering as well but stay tuned. we'll continue to follow that one. also for months, our investigative unit has been reporting on san francisco's dirty streets. our team even asking mayor london breed what the city is

bridge. welcome to friday morning. already february 22nd, taking a live look outside, doesn't the bay bridge look gorgeous this morning? >> pretty. >> clear, the lights are illuminated, just getting through friday, get to that weekend, right? >> that's right. >> good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm kris sanchez. marcus is off this morning. we want to check out the golden gate bridge as well, it is very cold out there and we know when it's this clear, that means we have no blanket to trap in the heat, kari? >> no clouds this morning, and we will have another day of some sunshine, and look at where we're starting in parts of the north bay, we've dropped below freezing. ukiah, you're down to 28 degrees. it is 38 in oakland, and also in san jose, and we're also feeling

38-degree temperatures in antioch. as you get ready to step out the door in martinez for the school day t will be 36 degrees. bundle the kids up, and then we'll get that sunshine that will make you feel milder by the time that last school bell rings. we'll look at all of our microclimates and talk about the weekend coming up, and mike, what's going on at the bay bridge? >> laura and kris showed you this beautiful view of the tower itself. i'm always looking at the lights here, we do see some clustering as you get around that tower and in toward treasure island. everything is moving steadily, but a little more crowded than we'd like on the span, it's what the metering lights are for to keep things moving nicer here. i did hear about a disabled vehicle around treasure island. all the lights are moving smoothly but in the tunnel there may be a disabled vehicle on your left side, we're track that and we see slowing from the bay bridge metering lights across the span. westbound across that richmond to san rafael bridge we're still reporting that crew with only one lane westbound open for the morning commute, which is lighter, because it's a friday, so we're okay there, and for the rest of the bay.

back to you. >> all right, thank you very much, mike. 5:31 right now. for a second day, oakland teachers will be on strike. they will return to the picket line in just about an hour, and the two sides will also meet for more negotiation. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is tracking the strike and the negotiations since the beginning. he's live outside haven's court middle school. pete, what is the latest from the district and the teachers? do you think this negotiation is going to make any difference? >> reporter: yes, good morning, guys. negotiations will continue today, but if this site looks familiar, we're in front of roots international academy. this school is scheduled to close at the end of the school year and school closures one of the many issues oakland teachers are having that led to the strike in the first place. i'm showing you video from yesterday, the protests all over the city of oakland, large crowds of teachers, students and parents picketing in front of different schools, as well as downtown oakland, as they took

that to the city hall area. when it comes to their demands, we've talked about it over the past week, really over the past few weeks, teachers want better wages, saying the classroom sizes are too small for the students and want more counselors, a few of the commands they're looking for. oakland unified school district is offering teachers an 8% raise over a three-year period up from 5%. the 5% it offered just months ago but teachers have maintained their demand of a 12% raise over that same three-year period. just last night after all the protests we saw during the day, a crowd showed up to kaiser elementary, where the district superintendent talked about yet another round of campus consolidations to deal with the district's ongoing budget deficit. she didn't address the ongoing teacher strike, which left folks now surprisingly in that crowd not too pleased. oakland unified school district simply says the money isn't there and changes need to take place. >> it's a fact-finding committee, indicated to the teachers that we don't have a

lot of money. we are in a situation where we are already cutting money going into next year's budget, before we factor in any kind of raises for anybody. >> strikes are won in the streets, not at the bargaining table. so we need strong lines like we had today. >> reporter: i want to remind folks schools will remain open in the oakland unified school district. they have the option of taking their kids to solidarity sites which offer day care, some education and even lunch. negotiations will be continuing today but we expect to get an update from the teachers union here at 7:30 a.m. we're live in oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> difficult time for not only for the teachers but for families, too, trying to do the right thing by those teachers. thank you, pete. as the strike continues, we've also broke whan bon what sides are asking for and you can find photos from the picket

lines also comparison of the salaries for oakland and other teachers, go to nbcbayarea.com. it is 5:34, and developing now, actor jussie smollett is out on bail. he was reportedly on the set of his fox show "empire" last night, after being released from jail. he apologized to the cast and crew. police say the santa rosa native paid two brothers $3,500 to stage an attack on him last month, all to promote his career. smollett originally said the attackers yelled racial and homophobic slurs and tied a rope around his neck. smollett's high-profile attorney mark geragos released a statement saying "mr. smollett is a young man of impeccable character and integrity who fiercely and solemnly maintains his innocence" but chicago city leaders think otherwise, and -- >> absolute justice would be an apology to this city, that he

smeared, admitting what he did. >> so far, smollett faces a felony charge for filing a false police report. in just a few hours, the two men charged in oakland's deadly grosseship warehouse fire are due back in court, derek almena and max harris face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the deaths of those folks in the december 2016 fire. this morning, a hearing will be held on the use of that evidence. both almena and harris are set to go on trial in april. >> it is 5:36. for a second day the hierarchy of the catholic church is gathering at the vatican. leaders were called there by pope francis to deal with decades of sexual abuse and coverup by members of the clergy. nbc bay area's jay gray live in rome with a closer look at what is happening today. jay? >> reporter: hey there, laura. a change today for the first time since the summit began, a survivor behind the walls of the vatican and spending time with the catholic church leaders called here by the pope, talking

with them, praying with them. survivors, you talk to them in rome say they're anxious to share their stories with the hopes that it's going to bring dramatic change to their church. as leaders of the catholic faith gather for day two of their historic summit, their focus here now shifts to accountability. >> our lack of response to the suffering of victims, even to the point of rejecting them and covering up the scandal to protect perpetrators and the institution has injured our people. >> reporter: injuries that linger for survivors. >> i struggle. i struggle a lot with it. i really do. >> reporter: a part of that struggle, the lack of outside help in cases of abuse. >> these are heinous crimes, and they should be handled and investigated by career law enforcement agents, not church officials who are appointed by the bishop. >> reporter: it's an issue that seems to be gaining traction

with some here. >> it is important that every allegation is investigated, with the help of experts, and that the investigation is concluded without unnecessary delay. >> reporter: but the delays in dealing with the crisis for some have lasted more than three decades, testing their faith and leaving them cautious, as these meetings continue. >> we like to give people the benefit of the doubt, that their heart's in the right place. we just haven't seen any evidence of that yet. >> reporter: that lack of confidence, one of the ynz church leaders have gathered here. and many of those leaders stressing that restoring that faith with parishioners is one of the main goals here, and really tied to the future of their faith, laura. they really understand, i believe, that they expect to have some definite progress coming out of this meeting, not just talk. >> well, exactly, it will be

tell you that. he can get any prom date he wants. >> i bet somebody is buying his lunch. >> i hope. outstanding, get that guy at least girl scout cookies. looking over here for any break, and in kt ffact this isn't as bs the bay bridge toll plaza. the disabled vehicle was slowing things across the span, should be just off of the bridge in the san francisco side but the metering lights were sometimes slowed down tonight, on friday a little more slowing but nothing dramatic. getting over there is great, an easy drive through the maze and bay bridge is in recovery mode as that disabled vehicle at treasure island is cleared at the span. the construction cleared from the richmond-san rafael bridge and the rest of the bay is friday, it's clear. >> great. >> that's right, finally. >> we have had two dry weekend, should we take the bikes out, the dog out? it's national margarita day, should we grill? >> you could do whatever you want to do. it will be nice especially for tomorrow. by sunday, we will start to see parts of the bay area dealing with some rain.

some mid-50s for the high tomorrow, for the coastal areas, and some upper 50s inland. and then as we go into sunday, our rain chances will return but mostly for the north bay, as we track our next storm system coming in. there's a splash and dash going on, on saturday, the freezing plunge, that's happening tomorrow morning at aquatic park and look at how cold it is as you splash and dash, upper 40s and the black joy parade will be happening on sunday, this will be a great event with some sunshine, a mix of sun and clouds and highs reaching into the mid-50s, but we will have to watch out for some rain chances going into the evening. if you're planning to head to the sierra, heavenly is looking nice, and still some pretty good travel conditions, especially today. by sunday, we will see more clouds moving in, and the potential of some rain moving through the sierra. we could also start to see some of the showers moving in to russian river valley, some of the areas to our north will see that rain before the rest of us see it in the bay area.

las vegas as well. >> yes, so you see climate change in action, right? so we are going to have still some very unusual weather here over the next few days, as we are waking up to temperatures in some spots below freezing. ukiah at 28 degrees. santa rosa it is 33, and some low 40s for some of our inland areas. as you get ready to head out the door, going to the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station, oakland is going to see temperatures right at about 40 degrees at 7:00, and then rising into the low 50s today, we will still have that shun shin sunshine. as you get dressed you need the layers and with the chilly temperatures, you'll probably need your coat throughout the day, with our highs reaching into the low 50s. we have a little while longer of some dry weather as we are still seeing the dry conditions here, but the clouds starting to reach farther to the north, as we get ready for another storm system to move in. and this will tap into some subtropical moisture, enhance the rainfall. we know that as the pineapple

express, but it will not initially be targeted for the bay area. this will be farther to the north, so ukiah to eureka will get in on the heavier rain starting on sunday, we will see some spotty showers especially for the north bay by sunday afternoon, and then it takes a while before this system starts to make its trek farther to the south, and the bay area gets in on some rain. we could start to see the showers moving in here for the most part on tuesday into wednesday, with the possibility of getting some rainfall totals at about a half of an inch south of the golden gate bridge and much higher amounts farther to the north. that's something we'll be watching because a slight jog in the atmospheric river could drastically change our forecast, but it will be warmer for this next storm coming in, so our temperatures headed into the 60s for the middle of next week. and mike, you're getting some more traffic out there. >> a little bit. in fact, we just missed the burst of traffic that came through san jose, so here is 101 just north of 680 and it's clear again. you see a little bit of yellow right here on 101 on the speed

sensors. it's green pretty much everywhere on your commute, it's 5:51, almost 5:52 on a friday. we have another crash, a series of smaller crashes in the altamont, west 580, moving typically slow until you get to about grant line and everything is just fine. we have another crash reported near the caldecott. chp is headed out there but it does not sound like it's affecting any of the bores, either of the westbound bores, they look like they're moving smoothly. the bay bridge toll plaza has your metering lights on, with slowing up the incline recovery, after the earlier disabled vehicle was cleared over toward the san francisco side. richmond-san rafael bridge is moving smoothly, lighter traffic flow there and up until a couple minutes ago, the crew just cleared from the westbound direction, so all lanes are cleared and so has that true there on the weekend. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 5:52 now, and happening now, a breakout of chicken pox and mumps is forcing a quarantine at a colorado i.c.e. center.
