>> and i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for marcus washington today. it's nice to be here on this friday. >> yes, finally made it to friday. now just got to make it through. the weather is cooperating. >> the weather is cooperating for a while longer. we're starting out with chilly temperatures and we are going to see that cool air with us, as the sun rises, a lot of upper 30s across the bay area. this is a live look outside in palo alto, as you get ready for your drive, or walk or ride to school, it's going to be in the upper 30s through about 7:00. mostly sunny skies and looking at a nice day. we'll talk about what's ahead for the weekend in a few minutes. mike gets us out there on the roads headed toward the bay bridge. >> and the toll plaza with a couple other people behind me. we have the metering lights on and we now have all the lanes basically in their crawl mode. this is the reason why you want to carpool across the bay bridge from oakland in toward san francisco, but really, it's only at the toll plaza that's the issue. everything else clears, even the span itself, there was an earlier stall and they might have slowed the metering lights down to compensate, but that
6:01 am
stall cleared and again, the backup at the bay bridge is the worst we see. i'm tracking the crash reported west 24 toward the caldecott tunnel. no reports of either bores affected and i don't see slowing but i'll track that until chp travels through and gives us the all clear. all clear for pretty much the rest of the bay. a little slowing on 238, just coming off the cast yo valley y. back to you. >> thank you, mike. a live look right now in oakland, outside havens court middle school. quiet now, but that's where too muchers are expected to picket and speak later this morning, as we enter the second day of the oakland district-wide teacher strike. 3,000 teachers walked off the job yesterday, and that's affecting some 35,000 students. classes are still being held with substitute teachers but most classrooms are set to be pretty empty as parents support those teachers. our pete suratos is in oakland, and he will have a live report on the strike and the negotiations planned for this morning, coming up at the bottom of the hour.
6:02 am
6:01, developing now, an irs analyst in san francisco faces charges in connection to the case against michael cohen. john frye is accused of leaking information about cohen's bank records to michael avenatti who represents stormy daniels. >> the charges come as cohen prepares to testify to congress next week, but that's not the only thing consuming capitol hill this morning. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us with a look at what u.s. deputy general rod rosenstein is now saying. >> rosenstein, who is expected to step down mid march, says he has "kept the faith" as he's been deputy attorney general for the united states department of justice. he spoke yesterday at the wharton school of business in pennsylvania, part of a business ethics lecture event. president trump criticized rosenstein for appointing robert mueller to the special counsel
6:03 am
in charge of the probe into whether russian officials colluded with the trump campaign. >> i left my office in good hands. i am as the deputy attorney general of the united states, i am appointed by the president of the united states who has the ability at any moment to terminate my appointment without the need to state any reason. >> attorney general william barr will decide if any part of that report goes public. next week, president trump's long time lawyer, michael cohen will testify before congress. congress is interested in hearing from cohen because he hid money from the government, lied to congress, and paid off women for donald trump. the thought is he knows a lot of secrets, and he's prepared to share them publicly. that being said, some of whacko hen knows will only be shared behind closed doors, with the house and senate intelligence committees, before and after wednesday's hearings. reporting live in the newsroom,
6:04 am
bob redell, "nbc bay area news" >> one to watch, thanks so much, bob. oa concerned activist is speaking out after being punched in the face on the uc berkeley campus. hayden williams appeared on fox news last night and says he was working as a field representative for the leadership institute helping a conservative group set up their message out on sprawl plaza when a political argument turned very violent. >> on tuesday, i was invited to uc berkeley's campus to help a conservative group, turning point, recruit new members, and while i was there, some students took offense to our sign that we had. >> a uc berkeley police issued an alert, asking anyone who can identify that attacker to contact them. >> it is 6:04. police in the tri-valley are on the look after a series of car-break-ins led to a chase.
6:05 am
police say the suspects spotted a patrol car and took off. at one point the suspect drove onto the sidewalk and then hopped onto 680. police chased the car, but stopped after it became dangerous for other drivers. there were several other break-ins yesterday alone in danville and san ramon. in a few hours a south bay man found guilty of killing his parents returns to court for sentencing. hasib bin golumrabi faces a sentence of life without parole. a jury found him guilty of the 2016 murders of his parents in their home. he represented himself, you might remember, in what was at times a reportedly bizarre and rambling defense. golumrabi has a younger brother who was previously cleared of the same murder charges in the case because of insufficient evidence. there is a security warning
6:06 am
if you use the whatsapp messaging app. the makers confirm there is a bug that lets anyone bypass its touch i.d. or face i.d. features. anyone can do it using the iphone share function. facebook owns whatsapp and promises it's working on a fix. a big blow for tesla. "consumer reports" no longer recommending the model 3 sedan because buyers say they are having reliability issues. tesla's stock fell more than 2% yesterday. tesla says it's making improvements. in other automotive news, for the first time this year, subaru topped the list of best mid-sized suvs with the ascent, the bigger one that came out today. the forrester was named best compact suv. toyota dominated with four cars making "consumer reports" list, including the camera, prius, ford f-150 pickup truck was the number one pickup truck. sure to be an exciting friday for women in the bay area. the annual watermark conference for women promises to inspire with a lot of ground-breaking speakers. >> "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is live at the san jose convention center with what we can expect ahead of laura
6:07 am
arriving later today. >> look who is there, you've got some company. >> reporter: that's right, look who i just ran into, chris chmura, our buddy. he's not talking much for some reason. i think he needs a little bit more coffee, but i'm sure he'll do great later today at the women's conference. so this is the vendors room right now. earlier we showed you the auditorium. they're expecting 6,500 attendees, and take a look, there are going to be book signings, and in this room, you're going to see a lot of products by mostly women-owned businesses. there will be 150 inspiring speakers over the two-day conference, that's open to women and men. it will cover topics including career and balancing work and personal life. tennis superstar seveis hserenas will speak along with feminist author and activist gloria steinem. >> our theme is the power of us, and amplify your voice, so it's really just helping people at any stage of their careers
6:08 am
create a better work environment and create a work life that works for them. >> reporter: and our own wonderful laura garcia and jessica aguirre will emcee the event. nbc is a proud sponsor of the watermark conference for women, and back here live, this is where it's all at, again, 6,500 people expected to attend and it starts at about 8:00 this morning. reporting live in san jose, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> it's always really a great event and where sharon is as well, nbc bay area will have a booth, where you can come out and talk to our consumer investigative units as well. thanks a lot, sharon. looking forward to it. >> reporter: that's right, we'll have a lot of information. >> nice weather for it as well. >> yeah, but you need a coat, at least for the early part of the session in the morning hours. and look at how cold it is now, in the north bay. we've dropped down to 27 in ukiah and 28 degrees in santa rosa, much warmer in napa and we're seeing upper 30s for the
6:09 am
south bay, and the tri-valley. so as you get ready to head out the door, in martinez today, on your way to school, look at how cold it's going to be, 36 degrees, you do need to run quickly inside the school, and warm up. it's going to be mostly sunny and by the time the kids head out are school, you can enjoy a little bit of time at the park, as long as you're wearing a nice, warm jacket. headed over to mike, you're tracking a car fire. >> a car fire and an rv fire, both reported. look at this, we have our shot from the parking lot, but we turn it over here across the street, and you see smoke, the smoke is just dying down, but you see all the flashing lights, four units on scene and including our executive producer, let's take a look from him, and his camera out there and he shows all that smoke being addressed out there. again, there is a car fire and an rv on fire, orchard at component, surface streets behind a business park across from the station. that has four units responding, a lot of smoke and there may have been two dogs in one of the vehicles but it doesn't sound like any of the humans there were stuck or have any damage or
6:10 am
injuries, but we're going to continue to track that. obviously the rv and the car involved will have extensive damage from the look of the scene right here, and we'll continue to follow that. let's get back out to the maps now, we're talking about, again, component at orchard, that's right across the street from our station and off of trimble, a major roadway, coming through there by north first. those are the only two major roadways in the area. the rest of the freeways are not really affected by that smoke, and in fact, the lighter commute around the bay shows that most of the freeways aren't affected by the commute either. a crash over by the castro valley y for west 580 just popped up, we'll get more detail from the chp guys coming up. back to you. >> sounds good. thank you, mike. 6:10, and new this morning, another foldable phone, do we need another one? we saw samsung's yesterday. now we learn about apple's plan to do something similar. plus -- >> i know i can do that, if i get a new kidney. >> a woman who spent years helping bay organizations now asking for help herself. we're going to tell you how
6:13 am
right now, it's 6:13, it's a great weekend to head to the sierra. it is cold, though. we have some single digit temperatures there. this is a look at squaw creek, and the resort that looks very nice to morning, great travel conditions to get to the sierra, but we will see some snow coming down, some scattered light snow
6:14 am
showers throughout the weekend but check out the season total of snow, 513 inches. we'll talk about some more rain and sierra snow in the forecast coming up in less than five minutes. >> an easy drive, the bottom number for westbound highway 37, see a couple of minutes a slowing around mayor island. highway 37 reopened this week, no problems this morning. dublin a little build for the 580 volume of traffic. we'll talk about a crash in castro valley coming up. good morning. i'm frank holland at cnbc global headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is poised to open up higher this morning. yesterday stocks fell, the dow breaking a three-day win streak and the nasdaq snapping an eight-day stretch. traders are reacting to some disappointing economic data, fueling fears of a potential economic slowdown. investors are also watching the latest round of high-level trade talks between the u.s. and china. some tech news. apple has drawn up a blueprint
6:15 am
for its own foldable device in a patent application published last week. the design describes a display screen with hinges that can fold in half or even thirds. the screen can be used in phones, tablets, laptops or wearable devices but the application only means the idea is out there. it hasn't been approved just yet. ride share news, lyft has a new ride option called shared saver. the budget-friendly feature puts commuters in the same vehicle to split the cost of a ride and will not be subject to surge pricing. but there is a catch, you have to do some walking. it requires riders to walk to a designated pickup spot and may drop them off within walking distance of their final destination. lyft said about 35% of its rides are shared. >> make some new friends with a new rider and get a little exercise. thanks, frank. some fighters are not in the boxing ring or the mma cage. some of them walk among us every single day.
6:16 am
we want to introduce you to 75-year-old marilyn herzog. the former california dairy princess lived in sonoma county all of her life and is fighting to stay alive. about three years ago she found out she needs a kidney. since then, she's been doing ten hours of dialysis at home every single day. about a week ago, her family and friends organized a facebook page and website calling miracle for marilyn. she's worked for years helping other local organizations raise money. now she needs a new kidney not only to save her life but so that she can give more. >> because this has happened to me and i have skills in fund-raising, and i would really, really love to be able to put on a major event, and that's going to take energy, and i know i can do that, if i get a new kidney. >> if you want to find out if you are a match for marilyn, we put links to her email and facebook page on our website nbcbayarea.com.
6:17 am
i'll try to also tweet that out this morning. >> there's a lot to complain about with social media but also things like that. >> the good. >> exactly. >> that's what we like to highlight. >> get the message out for sure. we've been talking about the watermark conference and lady power, girl power t is nice to have you with us here this morning. >> i'm here. >> as well. by the way, this is all happening because we're trying to accommodate our colleagues when they need to be with their families so it's a nice change. it's a little different today. so we're trying to appreciate our families this weekend, maybe go for a bike ride. >> go outside, enjoy it and the day we'll have to watch will be sunday because we'll start to see some rain moving back in, and it is cold this morning, as you get your friday started. here is a live look outside in san francisco, clear skies, at least for a little while longer. look at how chilly it is this morning, as you get ready to take the kids to school, headed out for work, we have upper 20s
6:18 am
now in santa rosa as well as ukiah. north bay starting out with some below freezing temperatures in spots, inland we have some upper 30s headed out the door. san jose now at 37 degrees and as you head out for the warm springs b.a.r.t. station, fremont starts out with the temperatures also in the upper 30s. then as we go through the day, it's going to start to feel a little bit milder and these days still cooler than normal but we have more sunshine. we do continue on with some dry weather, but they will start to see changes happening tomorrow as the storm system approaches. this one will bring in that pineapple express, that deep subtropical moisture as it moves into far northern california and it will stay there for a while. so let's go hour by hour, as you make plans, we will see mostly cloudy skies here, and then by sunday, ukiah and areas farther to the north will get in on some heavy rain, only some spotty showers for the bay area, as we are on the outer fringes of that, going into early next week. we will start to see some spotty showers going into tuesday, as well as wednesday. that's where we start to see
6:19 am
this, making a dive for the south and bringing us some rain, just briefly, from tuesday into wednesday, possibly into early thursday as well. but our rainfall totals will be much lighter cpared to what they're going to see in parts of the north bay, and up through ukiah and up to eureka, as we are going to see a quarter to half of an inch of rain for areas south of the golden gate bridge, going farther north. you see how much more rain they're going to see and all of the rain that we've had this season has wiped the drought away from the bay area. we are no longer in even abnormally dry conditions, as we are going to continue on with more rain chances in the forecast, and a warmer storm moving in. so we're not going to see as much in the way of sierra snow and here, look at how warm our temperatures will be by the end of next week, going from the upper 50s today to showers and upper 60s on next thursday. headed over to mike, you're tracking a crash now in the valley. >> i am, and i also like that raising temperatures but you snuck in the showers thing there, so i was watching.
6:20 am
looking over here, no problems now. easy drive as far as the speed sensors are concerned. we had the earlier crash over in castro valley. that has cleared from our report, because it's not on a freeway. it's actually on ravenswood, a surface street off of ravenwood, ravens wood inn, castro valley, not on the peninsula. we have such a big area we cover. a smooth drive toward the tri-valley, castro valley y and smooth flow out of the altamont pass. across the san mateo bridge we're picking up the volume a bit westbound, the flat section slows a tad because it's crowded, so does the high-rise but no problems on the peninsula side, san mateo 101 and 92, 280 move smoothly. here is 101 through san jose a light flow of traffic on south bay freeways, starting to see that build and the fire we talked about, again was on a surface street component at orchard and looks like the fire is under control but we'll track that in the newsroom. back to you. >> thank you, mike. next and all new this hour, the way the fda is making sure the sunscreen you put on this summer is actually safe.
6:21 am
plus -- >> got a trio for you today. a guy who can't get the phone company to take his money, and two different people with two different problems in the driveway. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, "nbc bay area responds," next. but there's a day for everything, right? >> i think there are a couple. >> there is a day for everything. good morning, mike! >> on social media right now we're sharing this moment from our 5:00 a.m. newscast, vianey really wanted to be in on the all girl fun this morning, you might get a laugh at this one, it's all in good fun. more news in just two minutes. what's better than having fast,

6:25 am
to make sure over-the-counter sunscreens are safe and effective. regulators plan to review sunscreen's major ingredients to determine what is safe to use. they also plan to raise the maximum spf from 50 to 60, and change labeling requirements. regulators will hear public comment before making their final decision. nbc bay area responds to dozens of consumer complaints every week. >> consumer investigator chris chmura listens patiently and here to share our latest successes. >> good morning. since we got started back in the middle of 2016, we've now worked on more than 13,000 cases for consumers just like you. some of our most recent wins, kenneth in mountain view who said his phone company stopped accepting his personal checks to pay his bills. well, we sorted that out and got him a credit of $89.03. now, two different problems in the driveway, first for russell in san francisco, he was unhappy
6:26 am
that the pavers that were installed into his driveway faded after they were installed. we helped him get replacements worth $2,600. second problem in the driveway, nori in san jose told us she couldn't get a newspaper to stop delivering to her home. we made a call for her and the deliveries stopped. she now reads the paper online. maybe we can help you, too. call us any time, 888-996-tips or online at nbcbayarea.com/responds. have a great weekend. >> you too, chris. 6:26 now. here are some stories we're working on for the next half hour. breaking news, in san jose, a big fire in the middle of the street, we're looking live right now, firefighters trying to douse the last of it, this is first street and component. witnesses tell us the rv was full of dogs. we'll tell you what we know. but first, we're live on the picket lines as well in oakland, as teachers arrive for the second day of their strike.

6:33 am
you, laura. we're in front of roots international academy, the school is scheduled to close at the end of the year and it's the school closures one of the many issues that are teachers are facing which kind of led to the oakland teacher's strike. i want to show you video from yesterday, many protests at different schools around oakland, large crowds of teachers, students and parents picketing in front of schools calling for better wages and smaller classroom sizes among other thing. it is offering teachers an 8% raise over a three-year period. teachers want a 12% raise over that period. last night we saw a crowd show up to kaiser el emtear in oakland where the district superintendent talked about another round of campus consolidations. the school district says this needs to take place due to the budget deficit. >> the fact-finding committee indicated to the teachers we are in a situation we're cutting money going into next year's budget, before we factor in any kind of raises for anybody.
6:34 am
>> strikes are won in the streets, not at the bargaining table, so we need strong lines like we had today. >> reporter: schools will remain open during the strike, that's what oakland unified school district says but parents who don't want to cross the picket lines can send kids to solidarity sites, more than a dozen around the city offering day care, education, and even lunch. but as i mentioned, negotiations continue today but we expect to get an update from the teachers union at 7:30 a.m. we're live here in east oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> it will be interesting to see what develops today. thanks so much, pete. as the strike continues, we've broken down what both sides are asking for and what you need to know. it's all on our website, you can find photos from the picket lines, visit nbcbayarea.com. in just a few hours the the two men charged in oakland's deadly grosseship warehouse fire are due back in court, derek almena and max harris face 36

6:36 am
>> reporter: hey there, laura. an important day centered on accountability for many of the survivors, and their advocates who made the trip here to rome. accountability means full public disclosure but also getting authorities involved in these cases of abuse. it's something that seems to be at least gaining traction with some of those inside this meeting. >> these are heinous crimes, and they should be handled and investigated by career law enforcement agents, not church officials who are appointed by the bishop. >> it is important that every allegation is investigated, with the help of experts, and that the investigation is concluded without unnecessary delay. >> today there was a survivor inside the walls of the vatican meeting with church leaders.
6:37 am
they hear a taped message every day from survivors but this time firsthand, communicating and praying with this survivor during the session here today. it's something that the survivors, the advocates had pushed for. now they are pushing to make sure that they get some action, not just words, as a result of this summit. laura? >> one we'll continue to follow. thank you very much, so emotional for so many. thank you, jay. all right folks, let's look at your friday commute, and so far, things are moving nicely and easily across that bay bridge. you see the tail lights and things have sorted themselves out after the earlier stall, things jammed up, moving much more smoothly. there is another stall westbound as you come over across the span. we'll follow speed sensors but the only slowing westbound is around university avenue, just because we're getting more traffic. this is actually light. you see that around the bay, a smooth flow of traffic here but another stall reported just off of 880 for westbound 92, getting to the san mateo bridge span, you see all the congestion, so
6:38 am
we'll get an update from chp, looks pretty clear. it's friday again. >> yes, it's friday, it's national margarita day. >> could it be coincidence? >> i don't know. 5:00 later. >> somewhere. >> they're celebrating all around. if you're planning to head out, there are a lot of events going on for the bay area, too, but a few changes in the weather. looking at tomorrow, partly cloudy skies. we're reaching into the mid to upper 50s all around the bay area, and then on sunday, we'll be watching for the possibility of some rain especially in the north bay, and it will be in the upper 50s for the inland areas. so let's get to some of those events going on, how about the splash and dash benefiting the special olympics tomorrow in san francisco, and it will be very cold for this freezing plunge, upper 40s to start out during the morning, and only reaching into the low 50s throughout the day. and then on sunday, we've got the black joy parade in oakland, and also a free conceprt so we'l see a mix of sun and clouds reaching into the upper 50s but watch out for rain chance as we
6:39 am
go into the evening especially around 4:00 to 5:00. going to the sierra this weekend, heavenly is looking nice, much better travel conditions compared to last weekend. we're reaching up to 30 degrees today with some sunshine, and it actually warms up going in through the end of the weekend as we start to see another system moving in, and then for russian river valley, sunday may be ending with some rain and our high temperatures in the upper 50s, and if you're planning to head down to monterey, we'll see an increase in cloud cover, but our temperatures feeling a little bit milder toward the end of the weekend, but our winds will start to pick up. a breezy weekend going down to santa barbara. we keep the sunshine there, but our high temperatures only reached the low 60s. let me know what you have in your plans for the weekend. i'm @karihallweather, the same on twitter, facebook, as well as instagram. look for my page, meteorologist kari hall. we'll talk about what's going on today, coming up in about three minutes. >> sounds good. we know where to find you. 6:39. next and all new on "today
