information about the death of san francisco public defender jeff adachi. >> thank you for joining us on this special edition of nbc bay area news. we begin with a developing story. nbc bay area's investigative unit, spfd has opened a suspicious death investigation. the city's mayor and adachi's colleagues are in mourning and paying their respects today to a man called a champion for those who didn't have a voice. nbc bay area's christie smith joins us outside the public defender's oic set up. >> reporter:. >> it's a big loss for us. he was such a, you know, fierce advocate. >> reporter: chief attorney matt gonzalez worked alongside san francisco public defender jeff adachi who died last night. the office in deep mourning

today after the sudden lotss. >> well, you can't account for these things. you know, you go through a process of loss and mourning. >> adachi was remembered as a tireless advocate for the underserved and accused. he began working the office in 1987 as a deputy public defender. >> he really loved having built this office, one of the finest public law offices in the country. >> reporter: in a statement, his office says he was in north beach at dinner with a friend when he began having trouble breathing, but our investigative team obtained an internal police summary, which states officers were called to an address to meet with a medical examiner about the discovery. e medical examiner called to y, cancel officers from responding. police kept going and we're told a woman had called 911 from his phone. he was taken to cpmc where he died. officers were on scene at that address today as the investigation continues.

in that slide. today they face significant challenges. sergio c quintana is live with coverage. >> reporter: this has been a pretty shocking day for all of the people out here enjoying a relatively nice day out along fort funston. of course because her body has not been searched, authorities have now actually expanded the search. high tide came in overnight and washed away much of the sand from the slide, so crews are expanding the search for the woman's body in the ocean. the coast guard has joined in. they launched one of their helicopters to scan the beach and surf in the chance the victim's body may have been taken out to sea. she's described as a woman in her 20s. crews have brought ineqpment to search on land. duringn afternoon news conference, the national park service described how the collapsing sand stone cliff engulfed the two women and their dog. >> one woman was buried up to her shoulders and was pulled out by bystanders, that woman was

transferred to the hospital and the dog are in safe hands. >> it's shocking. i can't believe it. it's such a freak accident, such a tragedy, and like i said, it could happen to anybody. >> reporter: now, that survivor is in good health, but authorities did not release her name or say where the dog is currently. of course, crews will continue digging through the afternoon. if they are not able to find her body, though, by sunset, it's not yet clear if the search is going to continue through the night or if they're going to pause again and then pick up again tomorrow morning. reporting live at fort funston in san francisco, i'm sergio quintana. thanks so much for that report. we are also following a developing story out of houston, texas, this afternoon where a twin engine cargo jet crashed about 30 miles from houston's george bush intercontinental airport. the faa says initial reports indicate there were three people

on board that 767, and none of them are believed to have survived. the cargo jet liner was operated by atlas air. it was flying from miami to houston. the national transportation safety board is now leading the investigation into what caused that crash. a warning for san ramon children and parents tonight. police say a man tried to kidnap a 13-year-old girl last night on fallen leaf circle. police say it happened around 6:00 p.m. the girl tells police a man driving a white car pulled over, opened the passenger door, and said your dad asked me to pick you up and drop you off at your house. he then tried to grab the girl. she managed to get away. the suspect is described as an indian man between 35 and 50 with shaggy hair and a mustache. the girl remembers he had a ring on his finger and that ring had two overlapping snakes. he was driving a white four-door car, possibly a nissan rogue or versa. the license plate started with 7hm. a follow-up now to the

violence at james logan high school yesterday in union city. two teenagers were stabbed on campus yesterday morning. that set off alarms, triggered a lockdown. today we know a little more about one of the victims rushed to the hospital with stab wounds. police say he suffered a serious puncture to the lower abdomen, but is now in stable condition. the second victim was not badly hurt. detectives ended up tracking down the suspect at a grocery store in hayward. they arrested him on charges of attempted murder. a hazardous spill has fairfield firefighters warning drivers to avoid the area. these pictures right here show kind of a yellowish substance there believed to be pesticides spilling from a truck after it was involved in a traffic accident. the leak happened this morning at around 10 at the corner of chadburn road and highway 12. the roads are expected to reopen, though, in about an hour and a half. grammy winning singer r. kelly appeared in court on a case making international headlines. this legal fight only just

beginning. nbc's chris pollone has the very latest. >> reporter: the attorney for r. kelly expects the r&b singer to leave a chicago bail once he gathers enough money to post pond. he spent friday night in police custody after turning himself in to face new criminal charges. a cook county grand jury indicted kelly on ten counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving four victims. three of them were minors and the alleged crimes happened between 1998 and 2010. in court saturday, prosecutors described the accusations against kelly and supporting evidence including video of a sexual encounter. >> in the video, the victim repeatedly, repeatedly says she is 14 years old. >> kelly whose first name is robert has been dogged bisexual misconduct accusations for decades, but the #metoo movement and a recent lifetime series surviving r. kelly put him back in the spotlight. after the show aired, a chicago prosecutor called for possible victims to come forward. >> we cannot seek justice

without you. >> kelly has consistently denied any wrongdoing. his lawyer says kelly's accusers are lying and out to profit off his success. >> you know, right now he's presumed innocent. we haven't seen anything, any reason to believe that these allegations are credible. >> reporter: as conditions to be released on bond, the court required r. kelly to give up his pass passport. he's been ordered not to contact witnesses or potential victims. he's not allowed to have any contact with anyone under 18 years old. kelly's next court hearing is set for monday. chris pollone, nbc news. a new development today in the criminal cases against former trump campaign chairman paul e special counsel's office filed a sentencing memoretty st it. for more than a decade manafort, quote, repeatedly and brazenly violated the law. it asserts that manafort deceived everyone from bookkeepers to federal prosecutors and members of the executive branch of the united states government.

now from rome with a closer look at today's session. jay, good evening to you. >> reporter: good evening, and yeah, she spoke in soft tones, but sister veronica openebo's words were powerful accusing those in the room of hypocrisy, of ignoring the morals and values of their faith. ♪ >> reporter: inside the vatican today. >> our credibility as a church is at stake. >> sister veronica openebo, one of only ten women taking part in the summit sitting justom pope district and harsh assessment of the church's role in the ongoing sex abuse scandal. >> i think all of us must acknowledge that hypocrisy, and complacency have brought us to this scandalous

place. that we find ourselves as a church. >> reporter: her rebuke comes as church officials acknowledge bishops and other church leaders worked to cover up cases of abuse. >> the rights of victims are effectively trampled underfoot, that could have documented the terrible deeds and named those responsible were destroyed or not even created. >> reporter: just outside the walls of the vatican. >> it's time for zero tolerance, zero tolerance of abuse. >> reporter: survivors and advocates say the strong words from church leaders aren't enough. >> they cannot walk out of this summit until they've done what they have to do to make sure that another child is not going to be harmed by a priest. >> reporter: an action plan they're still waiting on with just one day left in this

historic meeting. >> reporter: yeah, the summit ends tomorrow with a mass and closing remarks from pope francis. >> jay, thank you very much. senator dianne feinstein is getting a lot of attention on social media for how she responded to a group of children urging her to support the green new deal. the group of kids ranging in age from 7 up to 16 went down to feinstein's san francisco office with a letter, poster size, the messages that they would be the ones dealing with the consequences if drastic measures aren't taken now to combat climate change. feinstein told the children she supported a different a green new deal, one that has a chance of becoming law. things got a little heate >> the government is supposed to be for the people and by the people and all -- >> you know what's interesting about this group is i've been doing this for 30 years. i know what i'm doing. you come in here, and you say it

the sales force tower. the ohana floor will be open one saturday a month to four 50-person public tours. here's the best part it's free. >> ooh, that is the best part. >> that's a really good part. but you do have to sign up well in advance, so if i were you and you want to do it, i'd get on that right now. good news for many commuters, a plan to rebuild the dumb barton rail bridge is gaining momentum. the bridge would link redwood city to newark. today the first community meeting was held about that plan. the goal is to fix the bridge, which was built back in 1910 so that trains can cross between the east bay and the peninsula. it's estimated to cost $1 billion, and the project could break ground in 2022. three more public meetings will be held about this. this is a big night in san francisco. people gearing up for the annual chinese new year parade, and here are some people getting ready for the celebration. well, you know, it makes sense.

it's the year of the pig. >> it is. >> it's the biggest -- it's a huge lunar new year celebration. it's the biggest one outside of asia. tonight's parade begins at 5:15 at 2nd and market streets. >> hope they get some good weather out there tonight. that would be nice. >> the pressure is on rob. >> by weekend standards, it's not that cold, and we don't have rain. it's not too windy. pretty nice at least for february standards. as we take you outside, speaking of san francisco, overcast skies, clouds but no rain. you can see temperatures are in the 50s. see the flag there blowing around, west wind at 14, a tad breezy this evening, but not all that bad. no worries about rain in the forecast right now. still partly cloudy skies in san jose. 55 degrees in and around the bay area tonight, a thick jacket would be good. you're just not going to really need an umbrella as you'll notice on our storm ranger mobile doppler radar. a few sprinkles off in the north bay, but some of this probably isn't reaching the ground just yet. the deeper moisture is still off to the north, and i think that's where it should stay for the end of the weekend.

the short-term futurecast from now until about tomorrow morning, you'll notice nothing adding up on the rain gauges here sprinkles will be possible for areas mainly to the north of san francisco tonight, and temperatures tomorrow morning starting the day in the low 40s. high temperatures tomorrow will be in the low 60s around san jose, not too bad, just some overcast skies like we're seeing right now towards the tri valley, upper 50s to near 60 degree temperatures. same temperatures around the peninsula, upper 50s around redwood city, san francisco upper 50s as well, and the one spot that could probably see some showers tomorrow, northern sonoma county. the temperatures running a little cooler as we'll have thicker cloud cover ask a chance of seeing a few showers to wrap up the weekend. notices futurecast from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 tomorrow, that rain line isn't going anywhere. it's not going to be unt later monday we begin to see the rain drop to the south. maybe a bit of an impact on the morning commute on monday for the north bay and more significant rain is probably going to hold off until about

tuesday. this is the pattern we're watching closely a moderately strong atmospheric river aiming in on the north bay and potentially this could be a bit of a longer duration event. by the time we get through monday, tuesday, and wednesday, northwestern sonoma county, it's possible to see four to six inches of rain, so that's what we're tracking. the heaviest rain will be coming in late tuesday into wednesday, then come thursday we should catch a bit of a break and then another fast moving system comes in on friday. so needless to say, that is an ak active looking seven-day forecast. stay tuned to that window starting monday afternoon, tuesday, and wednesday. in the north bay we could see a lot of rain falling up there. right now it looks like there is enhanced flooding risk for portions of the north bay around midweek. we'll stay tuned and see if some of that rain has more of an impact further south around wednesday. >> you caught my attention with the four to six inches and the ground is fairly still

>> he says because people reached out to help him, he is now helping others. nbc bay area's garvin thomas has his inspiring story in this evening's bay area proud. >> i could spend just the next two minutes just listing the indignities and traumas mike bartell has suffered, his mother committing suicide when he was 6. abandoned by his father, combat in vietnam and life on the streets. if anyone had a case for being mad at the world, it was mike, and he was, but not anymore. >> everybody ready? >> to witness 70-year-old mike bartell smiling, laughing. >> how you doing today? >> reporter: caring for others while volunteering for the san francisco marin food bank is to see a man who looks like he's had a lifetime of experience spreading joy, but mike says ask anyone who used to know him, and they'd tell a different tale. >> they'd say, oh, my god, that grumpy old person.

what the hell happened to him. >> reporter: what happened is that mike bartell discovered very late in life that it's never too late to turn things around. >> no, no, never, and i'm glad that i didn't give up on myself, and i'm glad that other people didn't give up on me. >> reporter: both of those we should add were real possibilities for mike, a long, long list of bad breaks and worse decisions led to this, mike in his 60s living here near the dumpsters out back of a concord furniture store for five years. >> my bed was right here, okay. >> reporter: it was for mike a bottom as rock hards freezing t death and going, you know what, god? than't know, you always say you can ndle. well, and i was talking to him, and i said i think i've had just all that i want, and i don't want to try no more. i don't want to learn no more. >> reporter: but one day a

concord police officer noticed the marine tattoo on mike's arm and said as a veteran he shouldn't be homeless. >> he says, wait a minute, and he got on the phone, and he called the outreach, veteran outreach guy. >> reporter: it was a meeting that led to housing on treasure island that required mike to volunteer at the food bank. >> you're welcome so much. >> you're appreciated. >> reporter: that last part, mike says, is really what gets the credit for his transformation. >> because i wouldn't be complete without helping others. you just can't -- in this world, you just can't take. reired to volunteer but still does one day a week taking time off his job washing dishes at the merce restaurant. it's a life that mike now loves and wants others in a tough spot to know it's never too late to discov discover. >> i want people to feel as good as i feel right now. >> reporter: and the food bank
