heavy rain moving through especially for the north bay. let's get a look outside right now, with our storm ranger that's our mobile doppler radar, with the red scan that you're seeing coming out of san jose. we're going to be using this to track the next atmospheric river moving in and it will bring in waves of heavy downpours and a potential of some flooding over the next few days. we can see it's still well to the north of us, so as you get ready to head out the door we're dry for now but have the umbrella. we could see some light rain in parts of the east bay by late morning into early afternoon. it does get heavier for san francisco at 2:00 to 3:00 and then moving into oakland as well as over toward the tri-valley by 4:00 today. but it may take a while before it makes its way into the south bay. so i'll be giving you the time line for where you live coming up and mike, you have a couple of issues for the east bay. >> on the dry roads for now but you heard kari's forecast. over here a disabled vehicle southbound 808 at davis. be careful helded to san leandro, the slow lane should have a crew there shortly. upper east shore freeway, past

6:09 am
at ft. fundston. the woman was walking with a friend when the cliff collapsed friday. one of the women managed to get out but the other was buried. and right now at 6:09 as we get ready to walk out the door we do have some dry conditionsbut another storm is approaching, so make sure you're prepared for that as we get a look at our storm ranger showing that rain approaching northern sonoma county and also moving through lake and mendocino counties. we are going to see this moving from north to south, going throughout the day, starting out with some light showers for the east bay at 11:00, but some really heavy rain continuing through at least this afternoon for parts of the north bay, and approaching napa, going into 3:00 to 4:00 parts of the east bay and the tri-valley may have to deal with a very soggy commute, also extending toward san francisco, while not a lot of rain going in san jose today and it may be until tomorrow we start to see the heavier showers moving into the south bay, where we start to see some of the rain moving in but this could also
6:10 am
cause some flooding. i'll talk more about that coming up in the next few minutes, and mike you're taking us to pinole. >> that's right, we have a crash in pinole for the upper east shore freeway. i wanted to call out the bottom of the screen right here where we see slowing, we just heard about a crash north 101 around tully as well. and that's right where we're seeing the slowing, starting from about capital expressway. i'll track that and see if that adds to the slowing, we typically see that pattern anyway but looking also over here the upper east shore freeway around pinole valley road it is jamming up traffic out of rodeo and past highway 4. the fast lane reported blocked here for the commute on the upper east shore freeway that will add time headed dune toward the bay bridge. it's more than 24 minutes because this timer starts as you pass highway 4 and the backup starts about a half mile before that so we'll watch for about 26 to 27 minutes right now coming off the carquinez bridge and there is the backup at the toll plaza. back to you. >> thank you very much mike. 6:10. coming up next on "today in the bay," watching your money. the movement overseas overnight

the past two weeks to $2.44 a gallon. analysts cite an increase in crude oil costs. in the bay area of course gas is higher at $3.50 a gallon on average. prices are still about 15 cents lower than this time last year. another new business headline for you, the cost of going out for dinner is going up. prices at full service restaurants went up more than 2.5% in january, well above the 1.6% rise in inflation overall. experts say that it's because of higher expenses for rent insurance, labor, all of those being passed on to consumers. staff pay could be the biggest contributor to rising restaurant prices as some states have raised their minimum wage. >> we've seen it right here in the bay area. indeed we have. when it comes to the nba, we are pretty spoiled around here wouldn't you say? >> definitely. it's hard to complain about the world champion warriors. knicks fans on the other hand not so much. here is the latest proof, even the pros sometimes look like amateurs. when two new york knicks went up

6:17 am
school day, we are going to see around concord those temperatures in the upper 40s, headed to school not raining on the way to school but as you head out, that last school bell rings, we will see some rain coming down and it will be windy as well. here is a look at storm ranger our mobile doppler radar right now in the south bay, we're seeing some of the showers approaching parts of the north bay right now, and it will make its progress into the bay area going into the rest of the day, as this atmospheric river that's brought a lot of heavy rain across far northern california continues to make its way into the bay area today. and we can see just how far this moisture extends out into the pacific, and the reason why we call it the pineapple express, this very heavy rain connecting all the way to hawaii and we can see it targeting the bay area so as we go into the rest of the day, the rain will become more widespread but starts out in the north bay, and then we start out with some light showers in parts of the east bay, and maybe some sprinkleless in the south bay, but we can see
6:18 am
a lot of reds and yellows showing heavy rain into this afternoon, into the evening hours. more rain tomorrow off and on and then we'll finally start to see this tapering off, at least with this storm system on wednesday into thursday. look at how much rain the computer models are putting down. anywhere from 5 to 6 inches of rain, maybe even more for the north bay, while the south bay gets about an inch to two inches of rain. this will cause some flooding especially on the creeks and rivers that will go up fairly rapidly, so looking at the napa river cresting between tuesday night and wednesday morning, and could be over flood stage by about a foot, and then for the russian river in guerneville, expecting this to be well over flood stage, so this could cause quite a few problems going into wednesday as well as thursday, a lot to watch here, because we'll have some strong winds that could bring down some trees, not only will we see the flooding but the potential of some wind damage and maybe even a few thunderstorms between wednesday and thursday and more rain
6:19 am
continues into the weekend. mike what's happening now in san jose? >> we have that crash, kari but that's kind of it. here is the problem. northbound 101 jamming up as you approach capital expressway to tully road a hit-and-run crash. one vehicle took off. the other one stuck in one of your middle lanes, that is the issue as the commute builds. the rest of the commute not quite so bad. this may see more traffic flowing on 85 toward 87 and we'll track that 87 can't handle more than it does on the normal commute day, so we'll see if the shift is there, keep advised and stay with me for the changes. the rest of the bay not changing much for the tri-valley and the east bay, just a simple build across the san mateo and the dumbarton bridge off the nimitz and that is typical for 6:19. westbound 80 continuing to build coming off the carquinez bridge slowing through rodeo and hercules toward pinole valley road where your fast lane is reported blocked. the speed sensors have gone from red to orange so they may have cleared one lane.
6:20 am
they called off a traffic break, they didn't need that to clear the roadway. the rest of the bay a nice drive, contra costa county and upper and lower east shore looking nice backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. kari is talking about the rain coming from the north bay and look at this golden gate bridge shot we see a little mist here so that will create some slippery conditions just be prepared for that. back to you. >> thank you, mike. coming up at 6:30 on "today in the bay," a deadly shooting in one contra costa county city near a costco store. what police are telling us this morning about the search for a suspect. unexpected twist from a plumber. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, "nbc bay area responds," next. . did you feel the chemistry between bradley cooper and lady gaga last night? i was tweeting about it as my 9-year-old even commented on it. follow me on twitter. we're back with more in a bit. 6:20 right now.
