hey peter. >> hey hoda, good morning to you. this was a stunning end to the nuclear summit here. president trump says it came down a standoff over sajs sanctions. and like that the talks quick fell apart overnight with the leaders failing to make any deal to disarm north korea. the president dismissing it as a failure insisting getting right deal is more important that were getting it done fast. >> president trump beginning an 8,000 mile trip home in hanoi empty handed. >> sometimes off the walk and this was just one of those times. >> the president explaining how talks with the north korean dictator kim jong un broke down abruptly ended thab second summit. no concessions. no deal. no finally photo op. a closing ceremony scheduled to celebrate an agreement scrapped. everyone lunch was canceled with the table already set. so what went wrong? president trump says the north koreans wanted too much,

offering too little in return. >> basically they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety. and we couldn't do that. they were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas that we wanted. but we couldn't give up all of the sanctions for that. >> reporter: the president for now forced to accept north korea as a nuclear power while pointing to one area of agreement. >> one of the things importantly that chairman kim promised me last night is regardless he's not going to do testing of rockets and nuclear. not going to do testing. so, you know, i trust him and i take him at his word. >> reporter: the day started with the promise of a deal to get rid of the regime's nuclear weapons. >> chairman kim are you ready to denuclearize? >> reporter: if i am not willing to do that kim said through an interpreter, i won't be here right now. >> good answer. wow. that might be the best answer you have ever heard. >> yeah i think we had very very productive discussions. and the relationship is as good

as its ever been. better. i think better. >> reporter: despite the diplomatic breakdown the president showered praise on his counterpart. one of the world's most notorious tyrants. >> he's quite a guy and quite a character. and i think our relationship is very strong. >> president trump also insisting he didn't believe kim was responsible for the death of american student otto warmbier. >> he felt badly about it. i did speak to him. he knew the case very well. but he knew it later. and in those prisons and those camp, you have a lot of people. and some really bad things happened to otto. some really really bad things. but he tells me that he didn't know about it. and i will take him as his word. >> reporter: this morning the prospects for another summit remain uncertain. >> we'll see if it happens. it happens. i have not commit. >> that did end abruptly. the big question, will there be another meeting. >> the president saying a possible next meeting may in his words not be for a very long

time. also this morning aboard air force one, president trump according to south korean media spoke by phone with south korea's president asking president moon to actively help mediate future talks with the north korean leader. president trump now on his way back to washington. hoda back to you? peter, thank you. >> during his news conference in vietnam the president also hit back at michael cohen and congress in the wake of yesterday's explosive nine hours of tm on alcohcapitol hill. is that going to impact the accusations against the president? >> reporter: good morning. president trump's long time former fixer michael cohen is back behind closed doors on capitol hill for his third and final day of marathon testimony. his blistering public comments wednesday captivating the nation. the question now is cohen's immaculate more political or

legal? >> reporter: overnight the president at a press conference in hanoi following his press conference speaking out for the first time about the cohen hearing. >> it is very interesting. i tried to watch as much as i could. >> hinting out at the timing of the testimony. >> i've been a little bit busy. but i think having a fake hearing like that and having it in the middle of this very important summit is really a terrible thing. >> reporter: the president not responding to some of his former attorneys more explosive claims instead highlighting cohen's comments about collusion with russia. >> he lied a lot but it was very interesting because he didn't lie about one thing. he said no collusion with the russian hoax. and i was a little impressed by that frankly. he could have gone all out. he only went about 95% instead of 100%. >> reporter: it comes just hours after the fireworks on capitol hill. >> i know what mr. trump is.

he is a racist. he is a con man. and he is a cheat. >> reporter: president trump's allies attempting to do damage control. >> the first takeaway is michael cohen is delusion. >> well, michael cohen admitted the president never directed him to lie. >> reporter: the president's former attorney unleashing on him in a block buster seven and a half hour hearing. >> in concealing mr. trump is's illicit acts rather than listening to my own conscience. >> reporter: he says the president committed a criminal act in house reimbursing con for hush money payments to stormy daniels. cohen says the president even asked him to lie to melania trump about the whole thing. >> and lying to the first lady is one of my biggest regrets because she's a kind good person. >> reporter: cohen also alleging

then president trump knew about the e-mails before they were dumped by wikileaks and added that mr. trump indirectly encouraged him to mislead concentration annual negotiations around building a the trump tower in moscow which cohen says lasted well into the campaign. cohen is headed to prison after pleading guilty to tax and financial crimes. republican lawmakers pouncing on his testimony. >> you don't know truth from falsehood. you're a pathological liar. >> and grilling cohen over his motivates. >> you wanted to work in the white house you didn't get brought to the dance. >> reporter: tensions boiling over. >> that's not what i said and you know. >> reporter: also calling his former boss a racist. >> and he told me that black people would never vote for him because they were too stupid. >> reporter: that prompting republican mark meadows to bring up lynn patton. an african american former

cover up the hush payments. we learned donald trump jr. was directly involved, signing the checks. and we learned that the investigations are far from over. that michael cohen whose a cooperating witness to mueller has been providing that material and that's why they continue to rely on him. >> obviously he came to the hearing with some --. he's pled guilty many two different jurisdictions. was he able to overcome that? were democrats able to rehabilitate him so to speak. does the corroborative evidence in some ways enhance his credibility. >> i think that he brought so much evidence and that republicans mostly attacked him in broad strokes was helpful to him and revealing. this one is pretty simple, savannah. he was once charged with lying to congress. if he did that yesterday we would expect sooner or later he'll be charged again. if he's not charged that tells you do independent investigator whose handle this, not some of the partisans on the committee

found yesterday's testimony to be credible. and that is why the hearings for sometimes people who get overwhelmed or even scynical. these hearings to tter. there is a process to fact check and people who lie get charjds. >> thank you very much. also this morning, the first lady of virginia is facing allegations of the racial insensitivity just weeks after her husband was caught up in a scandal over a controversial yearbook photo. jeff bennett has the story. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the first lady of virginia stood by her husband's side earlier this month as he tried to move beyond that controversy over a racist photo in his medical school yearbook. but now she's facing criticism this morning footwork axes construed as racially offensive. pam northam gave her daughter and another black student balls of cotton before asking them to imagine being enslaved.

this morning the virginia governor's mansion facing a new allegation of racial insensitivity. this time its first lady pam northam who is under fire over an incident that allegedly took place during a tour of the executive mansion's old slave quarters. according a letter by the dispatch, mrs. northam upset an 8 grader. in a separate letter, the first laid handed cotton to her and another african american child while asking them to, "imagine being an enslaved person." walker's daughter describing it as beyond inappropriate, especially considering recent events with the governor. the letters were first reported by the washington post. mrs. northam telling nbc news i have provided the same educational tour to other visitors over the last few months and used a variety of

artifacts and agricultural crops. i regret that i upset anyone. telling nbc news she's extremely disappointed. all this as pam northam's husband governor ralph northam continues to ignore calls h.r. fizz resignation over that racist photo on his medical school yearbook page. he did admit he once darkened his skin to dress up like michael jackson for a dance contest. it was the first lady who stopped him from showing off his skills during a free wheeling press conference. >> are you still able to move like that? >> my wife says inappropriate circumstances. >> reporter: just the latest controversy confronted virginia's taupe elected liters. the state's attorney general trying to bounce back from h

along california's surging rushing river. it is now an island. the rising waters creep higher submerging buildings and cars. >> this is the pool area. >> at the r3 hotel the usually aqua colored pool was overtaken by flood waters. >> the whole resort is under water. >> reporter: neighboring communities are not fairing much better with mandatory evacuations in two dozen cities. estimated at least 1800 are stranded as the river swells ten feet above swell stage. >> this morning we had a backyard. now we don't. >> reporter: the floods follow two days of record breaking rain. a slow moving river that drenched much of california. nearly six inches in santa rosa in 24 hours, the largest single day rainfall on record. >> we need the rain but it is also a little intimidating to have this amount. >> to the north some had to be rescued from their cars. in forestville the street known

passengers reported having trouble hearing. four crew members were taken to the hospital. four others were evaluated at the airport. plane was taken out of service, and passengers were rebooked. the cause of the odor is under investigation. michael jackson's family is again hitting back at explosive claims being made about the late pop star in the "leaving neverland" documentary. natalie morales has more. >> the film airs this weekend on hbo. it has been a flashpoint of controversy since its premiere at sundance. jacks jackson's family called the film a one-sided hit job. now, they're speaking out on michael's behalf. >> today is your birthday. >> reporter: "leaving neverland" focuses on two boys who met michael jackson, and tell similar stories of how they say they were abused for years by

the pop icon. >> told me if they ever found out what we were doing, he and i would go to jail. >> i know my brother. i know he's not like that. that's not michael jackson. i know him. he would never, ever do that to any kid or anyone. >> reporter: the jackson family said robson is lying. during the trial, robson was the first who testified in his defense. jackson was acquitted of all charges. >> he said michael jackson never did anything inappropriate. >> reporter: private investigator scott ross said he interviewed him expentensively before being called as a witness. >> there was a reason he was put up first. we believed he was the most credible. >> reporter: if robson had been lying, the story would have fallen apart during cross-examination. jackson was found not guilty. over the years, robson consistently defended and praised jackson in multiple interviews and public appearances. >> over 20 years, talking about how michael helped his life, how he was a great person to him,

and he was his mentor. just great things. >> reporter: but that changed in 2013 when robson told "today" that what he said under oath in 2005 was actually a lie. the truth, he said, was much darker. >> he sexually abused me from 7 years old until 14. >> reporter: in "leaving nev neverland," james safechuck said the "today" show interview caused him to understand that jackson abused him, as well. >> he's not here to defend himself. i'm not going to let this happen. it's a lie, it's all a lie. it's about money. it's about greed and money. >> reporter: robson and safechuck say they weren't paid to appear in the documentary. >> i want to be able to speak the truth. >> reporter: director dan reid says the film is about their personal experience and defends not speaking to those who might challenge their accounts. writing, quote, we feel no need to include the opinions of people with no direct knowledge of what happened to those individuals. jackson's estate is suing hbo for $100 million, claiming the

film violates a previous agreement to not defame michael jackson. adding, michael is an easy target because he is not here to defend himself. the law does not protect the deceased from defamation, no matter how extreme the lies are. hbo responded despite the desperate lengths to undermine the film, our plans remain unchanged. jackson's family said safechuck and robson are hoping the publicity around "leaving neverland" will benefit their civil lawsuits against jackson's media companies. >> the lawsuits filed against jacks jackson's estate media companies were dismissed before the documentary was made because the statute of limitations expired. both men are appealing the rulings. >> understand you've seen some of this documentary. what do you think is going to happen when it airs sunday? >> let me tell you guys, it is very, very hard to watch. it is methodical. it is detailed. it is a very graphic account of the years long relationships that robson and safechuck claim

is behind the challenge and how to protect your kids from its disturbing message. >> reporter: its name sounds innocent enough, but for parents, the fear incited by the momo challenge is very real. >> we're scared because i have three kids. i can't watch all three devices at the same time. is she scary? >> yes. >> reporter: bianna becerra says her daughter, adaline, mentioned momo this week while watching tv together. >> i said, baby adaline, who is momo? that's when she goes, that's the scary lady. you know, she has big eyes, long black hair, and a white face. so that's when my heart dropped. >> reporter: the alarming image of a bug-eyed woman with stringy hair and the body of a bird first surfaced on the internet last summer but has recently gone viral again. according to reports, momo allegedly uses messaging platforms like facebook's what's app to compel young people to take part in dangerous

activities, from stabbing people and taking pills to suicide. the challenge also allegedly asks users to provide photo evidence of the completed tasks. if they don't comply, they receive a message threatening to hurt them. so far, no law enforcement officials have reported any injuries or deaths linked to the challenge. some critics, like the fact-checking website snope, says momo is a hoax, tracing the photo to a japanese sculpture called mother bird. many parents are worried and have taken to the internet to voice their concerns and warn about momo's spread to sites like facebook and youtube. kim kardashian posted a plea on social media tuesday, asking youtube to please help. in a statement to nbc news, youtube says it has found no evidence of the challenge on its site, but says it violates policy and would be removed immediately. facebook tells nbc news, we don't allow the promotion of

self-injury or suicide and will remove it when reported. >> this is not a modern day chain letter. this is a real challenge to childhood. it's a completely inappropriate and disturbing message and image that's spreading virally. >> reporter: the perceived danger of the momo challenge highlighting parents' concerns about their children's online activity. >> parents need to be aware of the content. set limits. quite honestly, as a parent today in this 24/7 media environment, set limits for your children. >> it is disturbing and concerning, and no one is sure who is behind the momo challenge. common sense media says parents can take steps to protect their kids online. teach them not to contact strangers online. they can enable privacy settings on your child's devices. you can download apps to monitor internet use and activity. of course, you can keep computers and video games in shared family spaces. this is all hoping to protect your kids from this challenge. >> like you said, you can pop up in the middle of something.

it crested at about 45 feet. 59 people were rescued all together, but they are saying that the water rose about 30 feet if tn two days but expecteo leave the flood stage by friday morning. and what about relief on the roadways? >> highway 37 has that closure because of flooding. and south bay very nice, a crash southbound 101, unusual slowing. rest of the bay sorting itself out nightly. crashes cleared from 101 and 92.

we're back with a great story tied to the past and the future to wrap up black history month. sheinelle jones is here with that. >> good morning, everybody. for young people, learning the abcs is a major milestone. we found a school down in washington, the roots activity learning center, using a piece of history to teach kids their letters and much more. ♪ b is for ball >> i always say, hug yourself. they are geniuses. they're the smartest things on the planet. ♪ possibilities >> reporter: like countless other children across the country, the preschoolers at the roots activity learning center in the nation's capital spend their mornings playing, singing, and learning their abcs. i am here because we love your abc cards on the wall. have you learned about your abcs yet? >> yeah. >> have you used the cards to learn letters?

>> yes. >> those cards are 40 years old and just as important now than ever. >> yeah, they are. >> p is for? >> proud. >> proud. very good. >> reporter: take a closer look at the walls, and you'll see a blast from the past, with a very modern message. k is for kids. >> l is for learn. >> reporter: we've just done all of these letters. back in 1978, the school received these unique and, at the time, ground-breaking letter cards. the black abcs have a subtle difference. all of the pictures are of african-american children. do you think it matters, to have kids who look like them or adults who look like them in their learning material? >> all the time. in their books, everything. >> reporter: why? >> now they can see, their people are doing great things. they're just as excited to see and know their story as the history. up there is their story. it's our story. >> reporter: the classic cards line the walls in the classroom,

and the kids love them. i love these pictures. don't you? do they remind you of anybody you know? >> yeah. >> reporter: which one? >> my brother. >> reporter: what do you think these cards give to the kids? >> a sense of well-being. a sense of empowerment. a sense of pride. a sense of accomplishment. they can see themselves within. >> reporter: a few of the cards are a little outdated. >> that little girl with the telephone, we pointed to it, and what is the little girl using? with the little kids today, the little children today didn't know what that was. >> reporter: the t for telephone? >> yes. >> reporter: because they're used to cell phones. 40 years later, they can still use the cards to learn their abcs, but it is also a history lesson. >> it is. >> reporter: how long do you hope the cards stay up on that wall? >> as long as the building. ♪ abcdefg ♪

>> reporter: these letters stand for so much more for the preschoolers. >> we have so much hate out there. we have to learn to love each other, no matter what color. >> reporter: can that start with 3-year-olds? >> of course. it starts when they're born. they was born with a lot of love. yes, diversity is very important, but self-love is most. now, if you love yourself, and you have confidence in yourself, and you taught that from the day you were born, diversity is no problem. ♪ we love our school, oh, yeah >> cutis. principal flemmings says she has alums who come back saying how impactful having the letters in the classroom were for them. they say, are the cards still up? 40 years ago, she'd go to teacher supply stores and she had a hard time finding learning materials with african-american children. maybe in the background, let alone the star, right, where they owned the narrative. second of all, it is a good time for all of us to do a self-assessment.
