"today in the bay" continues right now. and good friday morning to you. thanks for starting your morning here with us. i'm marcus washington >> and i'm kris sanchez, in for laura garcia. so we don't have just one storm that's headed our way. we have several storms, so today is your chance to get outside and enjoy the nice weather. >> we'll have a few breaks in between and at this point, it doesn't look like the next storms we'll see will be as strong as the one we just had to deal with, so that may be some good news, as you get ready to head out on this friday, but here is a look at the dry road conditions on highway 101, and palo alto. it's going to be in the mid-40s as you step out and even though we'll enjoy some sun early, clouds will start to move in ahead of that next storm system, that right now is moving across the pacific northwest. we'll be sliding down the coast going into tomorrow and the rain starting by early tomorrow morning. i'll have the time line and how much to expect coming up in about six minutes. vianey has a look at the morning

commute that's starting to back up in spots. >> it is. two crashes that you need to know about as you head out the door, the first is in the east bay, starting some seeing heavy delays and the second in the south bay. the rest of the bay area is okay. first the crash in the east bay, the folks that are taking southbound 880 need to take some extra time, definitely make that breakfast burrito, take it out the door and head out. three vehicles the number two lane causing delays, this is past the 92 interchange. we're noticing some slowing as well in the south bay. this is from an earlier crash along southbound 101 at the santa clara street. there are a couple of lanes still blocked and i've seen the slowing get worse progressively. here say quick check of east bay drive times. a lot of slowing in the east bay. back to you. a south bay neighborhood this morning shaken up by the discovery of a woman found dead inside her home. >> there is no longer a police

presence in the neighborhood. personnel cleared the scene a short time ago. this is video from before that, when the corner drove away with the woman's body, this is cnollfield way in san jose. police are not saying how that woman died but say homicide investigators are now on the case. the taped off-street raised a lot of neighbors' concerns. >> normally this street is really quiet, so seeing this many police officers on our street is just kind of bizarre. ? >> the coroner will release the woman's identity when the family is notified. police say there was no sign of forced entry. one of the big stories along the russian river this morning, residents may be allowed to return to guerneville in just hours. this is so they can see the extent of the damage for themselves. the sonoma county sheriff's office says the town may reopen

at noon today, but this is just for those residents, at last check, more than 2,000 homes are flooded in marin county. heads up for drivers in the area, the westbound lanes of highway 37 are still closed at atherton avenue. had to put the historic flooding into perspective, california's largest reservoir, lake shasta is up 39 feet in el vision since the start of february. we have a picture in guerneville area there, pete suratos will be live for us this morning. the russian river in just about 25 minutes. as the oakland teachers strike enters its seventh day, other teachers in contra costa county may also hit the picket lines. teachers in san ramon are asking for more money. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell live for us this morning. bob? >> marcus and kris, the 1700 teachers who teach here at walt disney elementary and the other schools in san ramon have been voting since monday on whether or not to strike. tonight is their deadline to submit their final vote.

last night, look at this video, the san ramon valley teachers association, the union who represents the teachers, they held a town hall with parents to share their concerns and explain their position. the teachers are fighting for higher pay and want more nurses, librarians and counselor answer smaller class sizes. >> we have right now large class sizes, and that is not good for our students. we want to make sure that our students are able to develop relationships with their educators, and our educators are able to do the best work possible to serve our students. >> the district and association are still in negotiations. teacher also have until 5:00 tonight to submit their vote on whether or not to strike. the association says it will not move forward with the strike unless 90% of the teachers are for it. and in oakland, just west of here, teachers there will be headed back to the picket lines shortly for today for what would

be day seven of their strike. there does seem to be a glimmer of hope this might get resolved soon. both sides negotiate until 3:00 wednesday morning, 5:00 yesterday morning and midnight last night. in other words, they're not walking out on each other. the district has raised its salary offer to an 8% raise over three years and one-time 2% bonus. the teachers are asking for a 12% raise over three years. according to the east bay times, the oakland education association says that negotiations are "making some progress." reporting live here in san ramon, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right, thank you very much, bob. a lot of folks watching that one. it is 6:05 now, and new this morning, a campbell community is coming together to remember a 17-year-old boy. kirk vasquez died in a car crash tuesday. a go fund me page is working to raise money for his family and so far more than $7,000 has been

raised. vasquez was a student and baseball player at westmont high school and had committed to the university of the pacific to play baseball, after graduation. the cause of that crash is still under investigation. >> 6:05. happening today, attorneys will be back in court for another preliminary hearing, tied to the deadly ghostship warehouse fire. most of today's hearing is expected to be just procedural, but the judge may rule on a recent request for cameras in the courtroom made by a documentary filmmaker. the judge previously said she has concerns about allowing that, but said she may decide as early as today. the trial is still on track for april. president trump is back in washington this morning, after a quick stop in alaska. mr. trump used that brief visit to tout the state's roll on the nation's defense. >> now he's set to deal with domestic troubles including the congressional testimonies from his former personal attorney. once he gets back mainland. susan? >> that's right, marcus and kris, good morning. earlier this week the president was facing the leader of north korea, now he's facing the aftermath of cohen's testimony. president trump landed in washington hours after michael cohen finished three days of appearances before congressional committees. the president made an appearance on fox. >> we you have an attorney, you're supposed to rely on your attorney. >> attorney/client privilege. >> it's also called reliance and he just was not much of an attorney, that i will tell you. i thought it was a terrible display of dishonesty, actually. >> in dramatic testimony this week, cohen painted his former boss as a racist con man who directed him to lie about extramarital affairs and about his business dealings in russia. >> mr. trump knew of and directed the trump moscow negotiations throughout the campaign and lied about it. >> on capitol hill, points of view on cohen fell along party

saying the russia investigation is a witch hunt. new details the recent winter storms are helping wash away the state drought. the u.s. drought monitor reports that 80% of california is now free of drought conditions. state water resource officials say that the vital sierra nevada snowpack is now at 153% of average. a measurement taken yesterday near sierra at tahoe found 113 inches of snow, compared to 13 inches a year ago. good news for us, kari >> absolutely. there's more rain and snow in the forecast, as we get a live look outside in oakland this morning, as you get ready to head out the door, it's already busy and the temperatures are cool with some mid-40s right now, and then as we go throughout the day, we are going to see in walnut creek our temperatures going from the mid-40s to the upper 50s today with more clouds moving in, and the rain moving in later on

tonight. so i'll have the time line on that, and also the sierra snow report. vianey has a look at the morning commute. >> if you live in the east bay or commuting to the east bay, you've probably got the toughest commute so far. an overall look at the bay area, the peninsula is doing great. a crash cleared at whipple and another crash near the santa clara street exit that is still working to get cleared but it should be cleared out with enough time. however, this one is causing some pretty good delays. i have a little bit of an update, it looks like now that they're on scene, they'll be able to clear out some debris along southbound 880 at whipple road. that's one of our slower slots. westbound 80 toward the bay bridge looking at 17 minutes, the metering lights have been on since about 5:30, too. back to you. next and all new this hour, an uber ride going viral, the driver's menu of options for how he would act during the ride has a lot of folks chuckling online. and speaking of driving, after years of waiting, tesla is

good friday morning. we're at 6:13 now and we have a break from the rain and the snow, this is a live look at our squaw creek camera in the tahoe area. if you're going there today we'll have some good road conditions. everything is starting to be cleared up but there will be some more snow coming through this weekend, and we're looking at already 218 inches of snow at the base of the mountain. pretty good. as we look at the forecast, more snow and rain on the way. we'll talk about it in less than five minutes >> you heard that, commuters, time to get the tires checked, your windshield wiper, all of that. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on and it's packed and busy. i have an update on the east bay crash at whipple road along southbound 880. looks like all lanes are clear but we'll still see some traffic delays. ily avery a look at how the rest of the bay area is doing coming up.

storm ranger showing we don't have any storms moving through now, but it's also giving us a view of the storm that's moving across the pacific northwest, that will bring our next round of rain, as this moves closer, we'll start to see the showers moving in, as early as tomorrow morning. so at least it's good this morning, getting the kids out the door for school in san jose, and east san jose, evergreen will be in the mid-40s, and then a mix of sun and clouds throughout the early hours of the day, but then by the time you go back to pick them up from school it will be mostly cloudy, with the temperatures staying mild, reaching into the upper 50s. there will be a few spots making it into the low 60s today. oakland today up to 58 degrees, and 59 in santa rosa. we will stay mostly cloudy today, and then by tomorrow morning, here we are already at 3:00 in the morning, and the radar is covered with rain, and some of the heaviest rain will move through early, then become more scattered but at any point throughout the day tomorrow, there may be some showers passing by so you have to be prepared for that, it moves out early on sunday, and then we get ready for the next storm system

set to move in by tuesday afternoon, and that could bring in some much more significant rain. but the first round of rain that we see tomorrow will bring us about a half of an inch for most of us. it could be a little bit higher for the santa cruz mountains, and then for parts of the north bay, ukiah getting three-quarters of an inch of rain and more rain monday and heavy downpours with an atmospheric river for the middle of next week. headed over to vianey, starting to get more busy out there on the roads. >> very busy. it's expected. it's the 6:00 hour. it is a friday morning commute and we did just see a crash pop up near cupertino, and i'm going to investigate and see what that's all about but i have some fantastic news, if you're traveling along southbound 880, you were worried about the earlier crash. we were' seeing residual traffic but all lanes are clear and the crash has cleared along southbound 101 at whipple road. fantastic. traffic is working to recover there so still busy but at least they've managed to clear out the road. as far as your south bay drive

these are live pictures that heavenly ski resort is posting online. all this winter weather and 6:24, look live right now in heavenly, sierra, folks enjoying it. heavenly along with north star and kirkwood plan to stay open through late april, or early may for extra spring skiing. headed to the slopes let this story be a warning for you. a group of teenagers is, that's a little boy hanging from that ski lift. the man trying desperately to cling on to the young boy while others watched in horror below except for a group of young teens.

the group of five young skiers jumped into action using a piece of out of bounds netting that orange netting on the side, they helped cushion the boy's fall. it was hard to convince the little guy to kick off his skis, and just jump. >> i yelled up and said, you need to take your skis off, because if you fall with your skis on it's probably going to be worse, and then at one point okay, you need to trust us, you need to drop. he dropped and we caught him. >> the 8-year-old boy was not hurt. that must have been hard for his dad, too. a spokesperson for the ski resort said the company's president will meet privately with the rescuers to express his gratitude. i hope they get freebies, marcus. >> glad that kid is okay. 6:25 for you right now. homeowners have buyers remorse. a majority of millenial homeowners have buyers remorse. according to a new study by bankrate.com 63% have regrets, when it comes to the current home purchase. the most common is not factors in unexpected maintenance or hidden costs. regrets aside, 79% of americans

friday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm marcus washington. >> in'm kris sanchez. go fwrs laura garcia is off. three storm systems are behind us, kari. >> enjoy the breaks while we have them. as we get a look out the window this morning from our station here in san jose we are at times seeing clouds. temperatures go from the upper 40s this morning to low 50s at 10:00 and mostly cloudy with upper 50s and as we track the next storm, it's dry now but we'll talk about when that rain arrives, coming up in a few minutes. vianey has a look at a very busy morning commute. >> it is a busy morning commute. the crash southbound 808 near whipple cleared, all lanes are cleared, traffic is recovering and all we've got left now as far as traffic accidents causing some delays is the crash i checked on earlier at cupertino. we are seeing delays along northbound 85 at homestead road,

there were cars already on the right-hand shoulder but the debris is blocking and slowing things down along the number three lane so be careful, ease your way around that. the bay area is doing good on a friday morning. back to you. >> thanks, vianey. floodwaters are starting to recede in the north bay. "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live from guerneville with the latest developments there. pete? >> good morning to you, marcus. we've moved further along down river road in guerneville and we're seeing plenty of the damage firsthand as we see here behind us, from the russian river, when it started flooding, it crested at about 45 feet or just above 45 feet and then you started to see the area flooded, take a look at this guys, some of the damage we're seeing as a result of the flooding, things getting knocked into the street. we're looking at m4 specialties here on river road and orcher road. you see the debris. as i mentioned the river hitting

the highest stage in more than 20 years, resulted in plenty of damage. we'll see a lot of the debris throughout the next couple of days, and even for folks that are used to flooding in this area, they've admitted they've never seen anything like this. >> i think i had probably six feet of water come into my house yesterday. and i haven't seen it yet. >> we anticipate that that area is going to get flooded by about three feet, not nine feet. >> the sonoma county sheriff's department wants to let folks in at 12:00 p.m., but we have seen some folks driving in here, that's why we moved to this spot because you still see plenty of debris in the street, as this is still a local state of emergency, that's what governor gavin newsom declared. it's going to be a reason for folks and seeing debris when they come in here, they'll see debris firsthand when they drive in here this morning. we're live in guerneville, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> it's always amazing to see the damage that floodwaters can

cause. we know fires and earthquakes can do but when you see the aftermath of just a flood, it's amazing. >> you can't see what's underneath until it's gone. thank you, pete. this morning, we learned one person did die in floodwaters in humboldt county. according to the sheriff's deputies, the man was trying to his farm through a barn in four to five feet of water, when he got swept up in a fast-moving current. you just can't tell. two other people tried to rescue him using a tractor, but the tractor stalled, and they were unable to reach him. in just a few hours, the man charged with killing a come at woman at a b.a.r.t. station returns to court. we're expecting to find out the results of a mental health evaluation. john lee cowell is accused of stabbing 18-year-old nia wilson to death at the macarthur b.a.r.t. station last july. wilson's sister was also stabbed. cowell could enter a plea in the case today as well. also due in court today an

matthew white is expected to be sentenced after entering a guilty plea, accused of painting graffiti on b.a.r.t. trains in millbrae, daly city and richmond and concord yards. he was arrested back in december at sfo. from around the u-s and area. drug companies are being accused of )duping ) consumers with false marketing -- just like big tobacco did for decades. duping customers with false marketing just like big tobacco did for decades. >> in the search for profits, these manufacturers have created a market for opioids where it didn't exist before, and have pushed it into uses that it doesn't belong. >> experts say the opioid related death spike is starting to plateau, but the overdoses

continue to rise. cities and counties impacted by the epidemic want companies to pay for treatment facilities and rehab programs. if you live in hayward, get ready to pay more to have your garbage and recycling picked up at the curb. the teachers are fighting for higher pay. bills at multifamily properties will be increased by it $14. a couple of crashes cleared out but we have some residual delays in the south bay. as far as the east bay goes southbound 808 cleared out and we are noticing that the traffic is starting to build, this is just part of the regular traffic buildup. no crashes along northbound or southbound 101 but it's getting busy out there, and i do want to take you over to that earlier crash along northbound 85 at

homestead road, now that crash has been cleared, but they're working to clear out some glass that appears to be in the number three lane and i'm noticing now that it's not really causing any heavy delays. a quick check, westbound 580 from grant line road to 680, looking at 25 minutes. southbound 680 from 580 to vargas road about 11 minutes. a quick check of your east bay drive times again this has cleared out, traffic is recovering along southbound 880 from 238 to highway 84 because of an earlier crash. 18 minutes, not too bad out there this morning. >> all right. here we go, headed into the weekend, and i think we need to just enjoy that dry day before the weekend. >> we were' going to see some more rain coming in for tomorrowtomorrow especial especially. we start out with another downpour for the weekend, off and on especially during the early hours and our high temperatures only reach into the mid-50s. for sunday, there will be some breaks in the rain, especially

during the afternoon, but it's going to be one of those weekends where you're just trying to find the sunshine. if you're going out to the little league baseball parade in martinez, it will be wet. you want to make sure you're wearing not only rain gear but something warm. it's only in the low 50s starting out in the morning, and then we also have the millbrae lunar new year festival at the civic center plaza. hopefully that's inside because the rain will be pouring temper 50s. headed to the sierra, today is a good day to hit the road. the rain and snow comes back saturday into sunday. plan to come back on monday if you can, because the roads will be slippery coming back to the bay area sunday. for half moon bay we have some rain in the forecast tomorrow and tapering off on sunday, a little bit more scattered then and the trails going hiking in muir woods still going to be

the bay bridge toll plaza but i have a look at your drive times. we're starting to see slowing in the south bay, as well as the peninsula, i'll have a look at that coming up. teachers in san ramon are voting on whether or not they should go on strike. last night, the san ramon valley teachers association, the union that represents those teachers held a town hall with parents in their district. the teachers are fighting for higher pay, among other things. the district has offered a 3% salary increase for this year. >> i want to make sure that the public understands that we need more funding in education, and our students simply cannot continue to subsist on the funding that is not really going into our schools. we have money in the state, and i think that we need to make sure that we all work together collaboratively to bring more funding. >> teachers have until 5:00 this afternoon to submit their votes on whether or not to strike. as teachers in ram are asking for more money the oakland teacher strike is

entering its seventh day and there seems to be a glimmer of hope this may soon be reinvolvereinvolvesolved. the district raised the salary offer to 8% over three years and 2% one-time bonus. the oakland teachers are holding firm on that 12% raise request over the next three years. we're expected to learn more about a deadly tasing on the peninsula that left many outraged. last october, deputies tased 36-year-old chinadu okobi. during the confrontation in millbrae, that happened. since then, the district attorney's office has been investigating. the d.a. has also been withholding body camera video some believe could shed more light on what happened. we don't know if that video will be released today, but at 11:00 this morning, we're expecting to hear if charges will be filed. 6:44 for you right now. new for you this morning, a new hospital will open its doors in san francisco this weekend, sutter health will open its california pacific medical center campus on van ness tomorrow.

the preliminary reason for that building, the seismic requirements, it meets it. the fact that the hospital is the first building in the u.s. to use the wall dampers designed to absorb the strong movement of an earthquake, but hospital officials say they are really just excited to provide services to the local community. >> excited to move to this location. we'll still be able to serve the neighborhoods that we're currently serving in a more central location here in san francisco. >> the 274-bed hospital will replace the campus currently on pacific and california, again, the official move-in date is tomorrow. governor gavin newsom is working to try to increase california's trade with other countries. he is appointing lieutenant governor eleni koulakis with a new task of reopening trade offices. newsom wants to reopen a trade office in mexico first. california is the world's fifth largest economy, when compared to other nations. newsom's office says the state's gross domestic product is $2.7

trillion annually. there is yet another candidate who wants to take on donald trump. >> scott mcgrew, this time the governor of washington state. >> jay inslee, a democrat, good morning, he made that announcement this morning. he's a former u.s. congressman, now the governor. video from his announcement professionally he's a lawyer. he's a prosecutor, like kamala harris, and was heavily involved in the lawsuit to stop trump's travel ban. so we're going to add ins lee to the list of democrats running for nomination and keep an eye on this, but keep in mind, we are a long way out, more names will be added, several will drop out long before the big show. senate republicans asking president trump to come up with a list of military programs he'll cut to get money for his wall. the senate needs to vote on the measure to deny the president his emergency power to take money from current programs to build that wall.

they want more information before they vote. other big question on capitol hill, who is next for a hearing? testimony in this week's house committee hearing with michael cohen generated a lot of names. alexandria owe caocasio-cortez s particularly good in getting cohen to name names and give democrats an excuse to generate more hearings. it appears their plan is lots more hearings, not impeachment, no yet anyway, so who is next? cummings says it may be jared kushn kushner. the "new york times" reporting president trumprd oed to give him top security clearance even as the fbi, the chief of staff and the white house counsel all sailed he shouldn't get it. we don't know why the nation's top security officials were against it, but they put it in writing. we also know the president lied about this involvement. in an interview with maggie haberman of the "new york

the morning but then more clouds as we go into the afternoon, with our temperatures in the upper 50s. this is a look at our start of the day, on friday, the first day of the month in san jose, and you do still need a nice warm jacket and pants or jeans will keep you comfortable as temperatures reach into the upper 50s. here we go hour by hour. we already see that by 3:30 in the morning, the rain is here, and it will mostly be some of the heaviest rain falling during the early hours and then it becomes more scattered, very spotty during the day, but at any point we could see rain dropping as we go into tomorrow as well as sunday, but it looks like the rain on sunday will mostly be during the morning. monday is dry, and then we get ready for an atmospheric river, once again targeting the bay area with some heavy rain that starts on tuesday afternoon into wednesday, and then it stays pretty busy, even into the end of next week, into the weekend. initially we're mostly looking at about a half of an inch to an inch of rain, all across the bay area, and some of that may, some

more than 45 feet a couple days ago. california governor gavin newsom declaring a state of emergency because of this, where you look at the roads and this is really a sample of the damage that folks are going to see when they arrive in guerneville this morning. we're live in guerneville, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> good they're able to return to their homes. down to the south bay now, san jose police this morning are investigating the death of a woman who was found inside her own home. this is video from earlier this morning, as the coroner was leaving with her body. police first went to the home yesterday afternoon on knollfield way, west of highway 87. so far, the coroner is not saying how that woman died, nor who she is, but we do know that homicide investigators were there on the scene. they say there were no signs of forced entry. also new this morning, the campbell community is coming together to remember a 17-year-old boy, this is kirk vasquez who died in a car crash on tuesday. a go fund me page is working to raise money for his family and so far more than $7,000 has been

raised. vasquez was a student and baseball player at westmont high school and had committed to the university of the pacific to play baseball, after graduation. the cause of that crash is still under investigation. happening today, attorneys will be back in court for another preliminary hearing, tied to the deadly ghostship warehouse fire. most of today's hearing is expected to be just procedural, but the judge may rule on a recent request for cameras in the courtroom made by a documentary filmmaker. the judge previously said she has concerns about allowing that, but said she may decide as early as today. the trial is still on track for april. new today, sweeping changes for youtube amid a controversy surrounding videos featuring children. critics believe it is a potential gateway for online predators. youtube's ceo is responding on the "today" show. >> so first of all, we've released and say these are
