her son jonathan was driving to reach them. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> just want to know, first of all, thank you for coming out to talk with us. how are you doing this morning? >> we're doing okay, i guess best to be expected. >> well, liz, i see you holding onto your son there, and i'm sure you are so happy you're together and your family's okay. as i understand it, you were in your home when this tornado blew through your neighborhood. can you describe what you saw and what you heard? >> well, i was looking out the window when it started raining real bad, and then i told -- i heard a noise, and i told my ex daughter-in-law, i said get the babies and go in my bedroom. we huddled up inside the bed and put a cover over us. it felt like it was forever, but it wasn't but maybe two or three minutes, and then it quit. it sounded like a train, and it quit, and then i got up and i told them to stay there, so i went to the door and opened the door, and when i looked out it

was just -- my next door neighbor, her trailer was completely gone, and i didn't know if she was there or not, so i run out there to see if i could find her, but i didn't see her, so i called her on the phone to make sure that she was okay, but she wasn't even at home. and then i called my boys and let them know that we got hit. >> wow. when you were -- let's go back to one second, liz, when you were huddled in there with your grandchildren, what were you saying to them to keep them calm and how were you feeling in that moment? >> we was just holding on tight, and i just told them, i said you all just hold on tight, and i said we're here, and we was just holding on to each other real tight. >> and you got the call, jonathan, i understand it you were driving towards your mom's house where your kids were. what were you feeling in that moment to know that they had been so close to such a powerful storm? >> the worst feeling that you could possibly feel knowing that

there's nothing you could really do besides hope for the best that, you know, everybody was all right. >> when you came upon your neighborhood, what did you see? >> trees, houses, everywhere. it was bad, and they wouldn't let nobody through, but i was going to get to my mom's house one way or another, even if i had to run through trees, power lines or whatever. >> well, you all survived this storm, a lot of people didn't. have you heard from friends, from other family members? do you know how they're doing? >> no, not really. i mean, besides facebook and other people posting stuff, that's about it. >> well, what an ordeal you've gone through and i'm so glad to see you're both okay, your kids are okay, your family, which of course matters the most. thank you for taking time with us this morning.

we really appreciate it. >> all right, thank you. >> thank you. and the other big story tied to this massive storm system is snow and ice in the northeast. millions waking up to brutal conditions and a dangerous commute, too. we're going to get to al in just a moment. let's start with nbc's kathy park. she's in a snow covered boston for us. hi, kathy, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. much of new england is waking up to a thick coating of snow. here in boston the snow is starting to taper off, but at the height of this storm, we saw one to two inches of snow per hour with visibility down to just a quarter mile, and with conditions like this this morning, a lot of schools in the area are closed. hopefully that means fewer people out on the roadways giving crews plenty of space to get all this cleared up sooner rather than later. but the big concern this morning is power outages. the weight of this snow is pulling down tree limbs and power lines, so the power outage numbers could increase as the day goes on, but the system is expected to move out of here in the next couple of hours, but

the snow totals already pretty impressive. let me give you a look. here in boston, we've already seen -- look at this, almost a foot of snow, and the snow continues to fall. guys, back to you. >> all right, kathy, thank you. >> the man of the hour, al roker is here with more on this severe weather and what's on the way. mr. roker, good morning. >> good morning, guys, we were talking about that tornado outbreak. well, they are now under frost advisories and freeze warnings as well from texas all the way into alabama. in fact, in lee county right now it is 37 degrees, a windchill of 30. that's going to make rescue efforts that much more difficult. back to what's going on in the northeast. here's that storm system that kathy was telling you about. it's moving away. that's the good news. it's a fast mover. we'll probably see, maybe, another inch or two in east maine. the big story now is going to be dangerous windchills, 45 million

people will experience windchills between 25 and 45 below, frostbite can occur in less than 30 minutes. >> right now, billings, minus 47. minus 47, st. louis. it feels like minus 12. look at this, 29 cities could see record low temperatures from the northwest all the way down into texas and as far east as cedar rapids iowa. here's what's happening, big, big low pressure system. this hudson bay low is driving down arctic air, and this is just going to push down fairly far south, and you can see windchills tomorrow morning minus 9 chicago, 12 in nashville, 27 in charlotte, washington, d.c., it's going to feel like 16. we will see a slow rebound. friday dallas you're at 75, chicago you'll be at 35, new york city at 36. guys. >> all right, al, thank you so much. craig joins the table, another story we're keeping an eye on. >> good morning, savannah. good morning to you as well. president trump defending himself in the wake of his former lawyer's testimony on capitol hill while facing new s.

vacation in kenya. you can feel their excitement in every post and story. between them they have thousands of followers. last night a fatal crash than morning we're still learning the terrible details. what should have been a stunning kenya safari experience has ended in tragedy. four young people and their pilot died sunday night in a helicopter crash on a remote island in the northwest of kenya. this chopper was taking off from the island the 8:35 p.m. headed back to the camp on the lake shore when something went terribly wrong. 33-year-old brandon was from san diego. a self-described travel addict and social entrepreneur he piloted a plane, a grin on his face. ashley was also from san diego. he had been exploring africa since valentine's day. carl was married and had traveled to kenya from colorado. a fourth victim has yet to be identified. the chopper was piloted by a

debris flows in those burn areas. snowfall-wise we're talking about two feet of snow up through the sierra. the rest of the country, the plains all the way down to texas, sunshine through the gulf, mud atlantic coast looking nice, lots of sunshine here but lake effect snow showers will drop after six to eight good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. so we'll be just north of that atmospheric river, but still getting some rain. we have spotty showers in emeryville while the south bay has some sunshine. today is a break from the storm that will be moving through. and we'll see the rain that we are seeing now tapering off as the next storm system starts to move in. we will start as to sto see rai tomorrow morning and off and off rain the rest of the week. >> and that's your latest weather.

nbc national correspondent, miguel almaguer with the incredible story. >> reporter: it's a reunion police are calling an absolute miracle. leia and caroline carrico found safe in the woods, a mile and a half away from their home. on friday the girls asked their mother to go for a walk, she said no, but the sisters left their humboldt county home anyway. >> the parents were obviously frantic. they were upset. >> reporter: the area is rural and remote, about four hours north of san francisco and known as mountain lion country. sightings are not uncommon and could be deadly. >> it immediately gave concern to us when these girls that grew up in this area did not return home. >> reporter: over 200 volunteers and search teams scouring the ground and searching from above, but 24 hours later no sign of the missing girls. family members left trying to hang on hope.

streaming. spielberg is expected to advise the film academy that movies from streaming services like netflix's "roma" fresh after its oscar success should not be eligible for academy awards. instead they should compete for the emmy awards which include tv movies. a spokesperson for spielberg's protection company says the three-time oscar winner feels strongly about the situation adding he'll be happy if the others will join his campaign. the famed director who represents the directors on the academy board has spoken out about streaming services in the past telling itv news last march. >> once you commit to a television format, you're a tv movie. you certainly if a good show deserve an emmy but not an oscar. i don't believe the films that are given token qualifications in a couple of theaters for less than a week should qualify for the academy award nomination. >> reporter: at this year's

braving some cold temps, but not too much snow here in new york city. >> you think they got snowed in, couldn't fly out to go home. >> make the most of it. search and rescue efforts gearing up again this morning after deadly tornados swept through parts of the south. n nbc's gabe gutierrez is there in lee county, alabama, where the number of casualties is really staggering. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, yeah, that death toll rose sharply overnight. it's now up to 23, and among the victims is an 8-year-old girl. now the powerful winds tore through this gas station behind me, and right next door from the air you can see the damage done to the building. its roof was torn off. the national weather service says a possible ef 3 tornado tore through this area packing winds of up to 165 miles an hour, and cutting a path of destruction a half mile wide. this was a strong line of storms that barrelled across the southeast, damage also reported in georgia, and there were more

tornado-related deaths in one day than all of last year. now here in alabama the governor has extended the state of emergency, and the big concern now is what those search teams will find now that they're heading back out to some of the hardest hit communities now that it's first light. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you. the northeast is digging out from a messy overnight storm that closed schools and covered roads with snow and ice. nbc's kathy park joins us from boston this morning. hey, kathy. >> reporter: hey, hoda, good morning to you. much of new england is waking up to one of the biggest snow storms of the season. some spots seeing anywhere between 8 to 12 inches of snow including here in boston. and because of the conditions this morning, many of the schools in this area are canceled or delayed. a lot of folks are working from home today, so hopefully that means fewer cars on the roadways giving crews a little bit more space as they clear all of this us. now, this certainly was a fast moving system. it's expected to get out of here

naturally you start with these guys, a big part that was appealing to me about the story. the special operatives, how much of the fighting they do for this country, how much of the burden they bear, how difficult and stressful that must be. then you've done that for 20 years. you come out and you're in the civilian world and you've got these incredible skills but they're not really applicable to like marketing or real estate or something, and so these guys get -- they then get tempted by this job where they have the potential to make a lot of money, and they feel like they're doing something good going into it. >> it can't just be reading the words off the script. there has to be something special in there that you actually connect to. was there something that lives inside you ben, that this character sort of helped bring out? >> for me it was like finding something to connect to had to do with the guys who trained us, like finding the realism behind it like wanting to make it feel as though you were seeing

genuine special operators and charlie and i and the rest of the guys did a bunch of work training with them. >> have you ever worked with ben before? was this the first timetimer? >> i'm a big fan of ben as an actor but also as a director, so i've been angling for a job. >> i'm angling for a job from you. we've been auditioning for each other. >> did it take a little time to look at him and say it's ben affleck but now i've got to look at him as a guy i'm acting with in this show. how long did it take to get past that part? >> no time at all. the way we started this as ben mentioned was four days on a firing range doing live fire with these three s.e.a.l. team operatives, so that was a really wonderful way to get to know each other and get to trust each other. i was frankly quite surprised that we did all of those situational awareness things with live fire because that was rather ambitious for an englishman who had never shot a gun before. >> giving any actors real guns was very brave. and if you need any more

evidence that our special operatives were very brave, that was it. >> when i walked in and saw you i said this guy is looking so good. you look like things are going right in your life. >> things are great, yeah. tell me a little bit about -- is there something special in this moment that you feel like i feel like things are going right for me? >> you know what? i hate to be shallow about it, but i just did the a-rod ten-day challenge. >> you did it? >> i did. i saw it on this show. i saw carson daly bombed out after a day. >> an hour. >> he didn't even make it an hour. >> i know i could pass the doughnut tray for longer than a day. >> not me. good for you ben. >> it's not easy. i will admit, carson, that it was a little bit tough, but i did it. you know, it gives you a little -- it's awful for the first couple of days because i am definitely somebody who likes bread and sugar. >> no carbs, no sugar? >> no bread, no sugar, no dairy, supposed to be no caffeine. i cheated on the caffeine a

little bit. it's terrible, you get through it and you're like i feel pretty good. by the end of ten days, i had three bagels. >> there are a lot of awesome things about you ben, and one of the things i think you did back -- >> i love when you start a question like that. so many amazing things. >> here's one, you're very honest about some things that you've been battling, and i remember reading your post in october, and it really touched me, and you said this, battling addiction is a lifelong and difficult struggle. >> mm-hmm. >> because of that, one is never really in or out of treatment. it's a full-time commitment. i'm fighting for myself and my family. that was such a strong statement. i think a lot of people look at addiction and say it's over, he did it. it's like cancer, it's cured. he's done, but it is a lifelong battle for you. >> yeah, some people are sort of uncomfortable. it doesn't really bother me to talk about alcoholism and being an alcoholic. it's part of my life. it's something i deal with. it doesn't have to subsume my whole identity and be everything, but it is something you have to work at.

i feel like i had a problem, and i really want to address it, and i take some pride in that, and i hope that, you know, and it is, it's about yourself, your life, your family, and you know, we encounter these kinds of hurdles and we have to deal with them. >> fighting for your family is important. how do you think you are as a dad? what kind of a dad are you? >> i hope i'm a pretty good dad. i certainly try very hard. i'm lucky they've got a great mom, and she helps out a great deal with making sure we coparent in as good a way as possible. dads are so important to kids, and it's our responsibility to be there for them, and to be present, to be mindful, to be attentive, to be part of their lives, to be as in it as moms, and that's really the central preoccupation in my life, you know, the focus of my life is what i love doing. it's what makes me happy and the rest of the stuff kind of follows. >> so how are you feeling about everything right now? do you feel like you're on a good rod. >> i'm ready to do another a-rod challenge right now. >> jennifer, your ex-wife posted

>> it won't be the same without you. >> thank you so much. we just ran this story about spielberg and he's talking about netflix and how he doesn't know if netflix should be considered for oscar considerations. just your thought on that? >> i think what he was saying is he believes there should be a robust theatrical release for movies and it's not so much a debate about one company or another or how long should a movie be in tractor-trailheater considered a movie versus television. people are consuming, you know, on their phones and on the internet, and on the tv and you know, so the business is changing, and you know, the movie business has changed a lot over time. it was black and white, it was color, it was feature length, and you know, tv was going to ruin the movies, and the movies su survived. i think they will, and people are working to define how that's going to be. for me, charlie, to do a movie for netflix is no different than doing a movie anywhere else.

>> charlie, you're sitting next to an ace director over here, won the oscar. directing is something you want to do, too, right? >> at some point. ben was really generous i made my business to grill him as much as possible. >> did you? >> about that transition from actor to director, very generous. >> i asked what you thought about working with ben, ben, when you first found out you were working with charlie, what did people say? >> charlie is -- has that like -- he's one of the most like -- i don't know exactly what phrase to use but like gets the biggest reaction out of other people when i tell them. yeah, i was in a movie, it's me. charlie hunnam. >> you worked with charlie hunnam? what is he like? something called treatment resistant depression. now a new drug expected to be approved by the fda as soon as today could provide new hope for those patients. here with me dr. drew ramsey, a psychiatrist at columbia university. dr. ramsey, kboorgood morning t. this is potentially a very big deal for folks who are suffering from specifically this treatment resistant depression. >> those are folks who don't get better. they've tried two different classes of medications for their depression, and their symptoms haven't gone into full remission. this is a reasonable population, 30 to 50% of folks don't respond to traditional treatment. those are folks with treatment resistant depression. >> this new treatment, tell us about that. >> breakthrough, that's the word everyone keeps using. it's a breakthrough. the reason it's a breakthrough is that it works on a different system. we're used to it influencing the serotonin system, with medications like prozac. this works on a different brain system. it causes rapid growth. the medication we're talking

about is called ketamine t. it's given by iv. a very safe older medication been around since the 1970s. it's so fast acting. this is a brain cell right here. the reason we wanted to show this brain cell is so folks can see what happens. you get ketamine, and this is a brain cell, a neuron. right away it begins to sprout. when we say fast acting, it's sprouting to make new connections. that happens in about an hour. the other thing happens fast is symptoms get better. usually traditional antidepressants we're talking four to six weeks. here we're talking an hour. >> and it's administered using a naval spr nasal spray. >> the new version is is an s ketamine nasal spray. right now it's iv ketamine as an infusion. you get it at the doctor's office in a very controlled setting. >> party drug? >> you're thinking about special k. it has been a drug of abuse.

it started as an an stettic. you get this spacey, floatty feeling. we give a much lower dose. people have some of those experiences, however, afterwards they notice an elevation in their mood and a resolution of things like suicidal thoughts. >> what are some of the -- >> you're going to get it in a doctors's office. it's a floatty or spacey feeling. some people can experience that as unpleasant. some people can have psychotic symptoms. then there is the risk of addiction. it is a drug that has gotten people hooked in the past. we are watching this very closely. so far there aren't reports of that happening. when i speak to my colleagues they're very convinced that by screening patients carefully we can avoid that. >> and what have the studies shown snus? >> the first studies were in 2006. what they show is between 50 and 70% of people with resistant

depression can get better on a ketamine treatment. we also hope it's going to make other treatments like psycho therapy work together because we get that brain into grow mode where it's making new connections. >> i think it's important to note here the difference between someone who is experiencing one of those lows, one of those slumps that we all go through and depression. like how can you tell the difference between the two? >> such a great question. let's talk about the science of depression. this is more than just feeling a little down or blue. depression is a medical condition. you're going to have a low mood but lower than usual. you'll notice sleep changes, appetite changes and some folks get very irritable and on edge. those are all signs you could have depression, and you want to talk to someone about it. that's the first barrier we see. before we get to ketamine, the big problem is people aren't talking and getting treatment. we just saw ben affleck being so open about his treatment and his struggle with alcoholism, that's the kind of thing we want to see more of. >> dr. ramsey, thank you so

much. you used the word breakthrough. >> breakthrough. >> this is significant? >> this is the biggest change we've seen in terms of psychiatry and medications that affect the brain in the last 50 years. >> thank you so much. thanks for your explanation as well. up next, mr. roker in the kitchen getting ready to share his favorite keto iendlyfr

we're excited about our "today" food segment. our very own al roker. if you follow him on instagram, and you know you do, he spends a lot of time in the kitchen. >> that's right. since september al has been on the keto diet posting pictures of his many creations. a lot of you have been asking would you share the recipes, so that is what he's going to do today. >> you and i were keto partners for a while, and i broke up with keto. >> this might bring you back. by the way, this recipe we adapted from maria emrick, so i don't want to take credit for this, but it's really kind of

simple. it really is amazing how simple this is. >> on keto you don't get bread. >> you don't get bread generally. >> you can't eat a ton of this, but you can have a roll or two. almond powder, sill yum husk, salt, baking powder and boiling water. i mean, this thing is about as simple as you can get. you start with a cup of almond flour. you add silium. >> you go to your silium husk store and get it. >> is that on the periodic table? >> superman is really allergic to it. you boil some water. you pour that in. >> is that egg whites? >> these are egg whites. >> and what's that? >> this is cider vinegar. you're going to beat this very gently. i mean, with a hand mixer. you don't want to over beat it. it's eventually going to get to

the consistency of play-doh. >> this bread, is it low carb? >> it's low carb. it's about two net carbs by the time it's all finished. >> most keto diets you're trying to get 20 net carbs a day. >> you're going to take this, form it into a ball very simply. this recipe will make about six, i've doubled it to make bigger rolls, bigger buns. >> submit it without comment. >> it's going to be in the oven at 350 for about an hour, between 50 minutes to an hour. you'll know it's done when you kind of tap on it, and it's hollow, and then you can put a little butter, a little sea salt and boom. >> you basically are scratching the itch. >> what do you think? >> it tastes like bread. >> i like it. >> if you toast it it's even better. >> the little salt helps it. >> to go with this, sam sifton had a great takeout in the "new york times" a couple of weeks ago with no recipe recipes. this is for sloppy joes.

basically a couple of glugs of olive oil, as he likes to say, pepper, celery, onion, jalapeno. >> keto you can go full fat. >> exactly. the more fat the better. >> you're going to cook this until it starts to get soft about seven minutes or so. then you're going to put in a few cloves of minced garlic. >> i like a lot of garlic. >> you're showing off with minced. >> i knew it. >> stirring it down, stirring it down, then you're going to take about a pound and a half of ground beef. >> okay. >> you could do this with turkey, ground turkey or ground chicken. >> but why would you? >> why would you, really. you want some ground beef with about -- >> it smells so good, right? >> you want it with about 20% fat, you know? because you really want that full fat flavor. and you brown that up. it will come down to about this where you've got all this nice, all of these juicy bits. >> keto you're really supposed to not have many carbs, even a tomato sauce or tomato paste you

avoid, so how are you going to make it? >> you're upping it up a little bit. you're not having a ton of this. it's not that bad. you're going to take a couple of tablespoons of tomato paste, put that in. all right? then you're going to take some worcestershire sauce, which is fun to say. >> i can't say it. i call it w sauce. >> okay. there you goch. and a little crushed tomato. >> what is that? >> crushed tomatoes. >> from a can. you're not crushing them yourself. >> you're not crushing them yourself. this is not like lucy and ethel. and then the hot sauce. >> i like it. >> dump it. dump it. >> that's it? >> and then that's it. >> that's easy. >> you're going to cook this for about 20, 30 minutes until it cooks down, and it gets nice and thick. >> sloppy joes. >> al, how much weight have you lost on the keto diet? >> i've lost about 40 pounds. >> 40? >> is that amazing. >> incredible. >> and you're so committed to it. >> al, your numbers are all good.
