as our temperatures warm up, but it won't be as clear and sunny as it was yesterday. we'll talk more about that and what's ahead for the rest of the week. mike, you have a good look at the morning commute. >> i do. we'll start with our view of the altamont pass, representative flow shown here and it's not bad coming off of the merge but it is typically slow through the area, west 580 and really jams up, see this grant line road overcrossing there, right there is where there's a big pothole reported, and now your left two lanes are blocked. two left lanes are blocked coming out of the altamont and going into grant line road. there's a big pothole that's resurfaced after they had some emergency repair work yesterday. that's a problem for folks coming in and out of tracy. look how light the traffic flow is getting toward the dublin interchange, livermore, and continuing on to castro valley. some little slowing for hayward but overall, that commute is saved by the backup over in tracy, out of tracy and the rest of the bay shows a lighter volume as well. i'll show you the bay bridge coming up and i'm going to talk about the flow there.
6:01 am

"today in the bay's" tracie potts is live in washington with more on the developments that are expected this week. good morning, tracie. >> hi, laura, good morning. let's start with the bay area's nancy pelosi, with so many democrats, several of them ready to impeach president trump right now. pelosi now seems to be putting the brakes on that idea. "i'm not for impeachment" house speaker nancy pelosi tells "the washington post." "it divides the country and he's just not worth it," she says of president trump. >> our day-to-day work is not about him. it's about the american people. >> reporter: white house spokesperson sarah huckabee sanders says "we're not that concerned" adding "impeachment should have never been on the table."
6:03 am
>> to get to removal, you will need at least 20 republican senators in the other house of congress. that's just a political reality. >> reporter: a house vote today will urge the justice department to release robert mueller's full report on russian election interference. this week, there could be signs of where that investigation is headed. a second sentencing tomorrow for former trump campaign chair paul manafort, on unrelated financial crimes. >> i don't have any doubt that mr. trump is going to pardon paul manafort at some point. the question is when. >> he'll make a decision when he's ready. >> reporter: on thursday, former trump adviser roger stone gets a trial date, and explains to a judge how his new book on russia does not violate her gag order. also this week, status hearings for former national security adviser michael flynn, and manafort's deputy, rick gates. both are cooperating with prosecutors after pleading guilty. and now we learn about a brand

now it's down to one remaining location in lay fay yat. >> 6:06 this morning. check your pantry if you're baking later today. the five-pound bags affected in the recall could be at risk for salmonella contamination. happening now, you can buy tickets to oakley, the event is on saturday, may 11th an o'hara avenue. dozens of local restaurants and businesses will be taking part in this. tickets are $12 and you can buy them at oakley city hall, before that, if you're looking to head outside and grill. >> it is nice to see all clear weather in the forecast and also warmer temperatures. it is still chilly as you head out the door around the dublin area, but look at this view. no fog yesterday. we were socked in with the low
6:08 am
visibility and the fog, but it's still very chilly, with our temperatures in the upper 30s in livermore, 39 in napa, as well as santa rosa, and 49 degrees in san francisco. after this cool start, our temperatures warm up, our morning drive looks all good, and also for antioch, reaching into the low 60s by early afternoon. we'll talk about what else is going on with more of our temperature trends coming up in about four minutes, and mike, you have a look at that morning commute. >> it's not bad for a tuesday, kari. tuesday we tend to see a bigger volume of traffic, but after the time change, there is an adjustment, getting in toward the spring months. we also have a lighter flow that starts to develop. so right now, we're showing slowing for 680 south through pleasanton. 808 through hayward and a build across the san mateo and the dumbarton bridges. the bay bridge already had the backup. i want to show you that in a second. i want to point out highway 4 we have slowing through concord and bay point, and eastbound headed over toward antioch, where kari gave you the forecast just a couple seconds ago, there is a
6:09 am
disabled vehicle that may slow you down. we'll get more information. the build slight build for the upper east shore freeway. the cash lanes off to the left lighter and the fast track lanes are moving and that's why we know there's a lighter volume headed toward the bay bridge, but you do still have to wait. it's the bay bridge and the major connector from oakland into san francisco. guys, back to you. >> thanks, mike. 6:09 right now. next and new this hour on "today in the bay," a story demonstrating the positive power of social media. the reason one cookie store owner is so grateful this morning. we could use that, because lots of tech is under fire this morning. we'll look in business and tech. woman attacked by a jaguar while trying to take a selfie - is . i was in the wrong for leaning over the barrier. >> also new for you from overnight, the woman attacked by the jaguar while trying to take a selfie. she's speaking out this morning. her side of the story in her own words. that's coming up for you at 6:25. 6:09 right now. you're watching "today in the bay." the time is 6:12, and we start out with clear skies and another chilly morning. here is a live look outside in san jose, and we'll gradually start to see more clouds moving in. temperatures go from the upper 40s to the upper 50s today. still not close to our normal high, but we have a big warmup in the forecast. i'll show you that in less than five minutes. and looking at walnut creek,

those tail lights away from us, in the middle of 680 at the top of 24, those are moving nicely but building the volume, same thing at the parking lot for b.a.r.t. there, but no delays. and a very happy tuesday to you. boeing continues to feel the pressure from its 737 max 8, as more airlines, more countries reconsider the safety of the popular plane. it flies here in the united states. the faa has no plans to change that. elon musk asked a court not to find him guilty of contempt, after he defied an order not to tweet false financial information about his company. the "new york times" reports this morning that new court documents show google paid its former executive amit singhal $45 million after he left the company, accused of sexual misconduct. singhal did not respond to "the times" report but has in the past denied wrongdoing. the amount was revealed as part of a shareholder lawsuit against google for the way it handles alleged wrongdoing. presidential candidate elizabeth warren made news last
6:14 am
week when she said if she were president, she'd work to break up facebook, google and amazon. to the list you can now add apple. "politico" reports warren accepted campaign contributions from employees of the same companies, including $2,700 from facebook's sheryl sandberg, and continues to use facebook to advertise her campaign. there was a brief argument between facebook and the warren campaign after the campaign took out facebook ads, calling for facebook to be broken up, and facebook turned them down. those ads used the facebook logo and facebook doesn't allow its logo to be used in other people's ads. facebook ended up putting those back up, reversing itself. it's really a long list of people and companies in trouble this morning. wells fargo's embattled ceo will go before congress this morning. timothy sloan was not ceo when the san francisco bank committed its original sins of duping customers into crediting credit card and savings accounts.
6:15 am
accounts they either did not authorize or know they had, but he was a highly-placed executive in the bank at the time, and has been ceo during wells fargo's latest problems. sloan will face the house financial services committee led by maxine waters, who has not been shy about her dislike of wells fargo. it should be one where we see a lot of posturing and a lot of sound bites. i'm sure we'll bring them to you tomorrow morning. >> thanks, scott. on the 30th anniversary of the worldwide web, a story about the power of the internet. so this started with one lowly doughnut shop owner in texas, whose super slow grand opening left him in a hole, until his son tweeted about his "sad dad." that tweet got half a million likes in three days faster than you can say chocolate old-fashioned the store was booming with lines out the door. >> so sweet, it actually like brought a tear to my eye. >> i wanted to support what he's
6:16 am
done, and it's awesome. >> dad's back there, he's been up since 2:00 a.m. making doughnuts. >> oh! >> bring them in with the story but keep them with the taste. the doughnuts now selling like hot cakes. yesterday supply completely sold out. this is thanks to the one sweet tweet from his loving son there. >> i love it. that's great. >>analogy. giving away free pancakes today. >> ihop. >> you want to sell the doughnuts, you don't want to give those away, too. >> too soon to give away. >> the free ones, talk about those. >> that money goes to charity, so yes. if you want to go to ihop today get a free pancake and the other pancakes you buy the money goes to charity. >> there we go. go outside. >> we're talking about breakfast this morning. >> i'm hungry! >> yes, and it's a great morning to enjoy a little bit more time before you have to rush out the
6:17 am
door, because we don't have rain falling on you, and our temperatures are in the upper 30s. you need a nice, thick coat. now 39 degrees in livermore, napa, santa rosa, it's 43 in palo alto. after this chilly start, if you want to head out for a hike, we will have some cool temperatures in los gatos, 46 degrees, and we will also keep the cool temperatures throughout the day, a few more clouds, it won't be as bright and sunny as yesterday, with our high temperatures reaching close to 60 degrees there. let's head up to martinez. our temperature trend goes from 45 at 8:00 to some low 60s today, and you'll notice still some sunshine there, but it will kind of get filtered by the clouds that will be moving in, and our temperatures reaching up to 63 in santa rosa. we'll be up to 60 in palo alto, and oakland today reaching up to 59 degrees. it looks really busy on the radar and satellite imagery. the storm that we had over the weekend that brought us the hail
6:18 am
and the thunderstorms, it's still spinning over southern california. that's not moving our way, but we do have a cold front that's moving our way, and the rain continues to fizzle out. it's going to bump up against some really dry air. so the rain chances go down, as it moves into the bay area, but i'm still watching out for a slight chance of rain farther to the north. we'll hold onto those clouds as that system drops in, and we'll also pick up on some really gusty winds throughout the day, because of all of that motion going on with winds rushing in from the north and northwest. even as we are only going to see a slight chance of rain, our winds will be quite strong, as that front moves through the bay area. our winds coming in from the northwest, here we are at 11:30, and this shows the wind speeds in miles per hour. redwood city 34-mile-per-hour winds, and for even the valleys, it's going to be up to about 20 to 25, maybe even 27 later on today. the coastal areas that will have the strongest wind speeds today,
6:19 am
up to possibly close to 40 miles per hour. that's my only concern in this forecast, because look at how nice it will be, and our temperatures warm up with some low 70s in the inland valleys, going into the weekend. i'll have more updates on that and mike, now you have a traffic alert. we have a traffic alert, but kari, this is not a new incident. we talked about this, the big pothole, the repair work that needs now the closure of two left lanes westbound 580, this is a problem if you are headed out of the altamont pass and coming in to livermore. most of our viewers don't even see that commute, so that is just the note official traffic alert, two lanes are blocked as the commute builds out of tracy. meanwhile the rest of your commute moving smoothly is keeping things slight lighter as far as the volume in the livermore area and the slowing through pleasanton and typical slower drive through the 880 portion of the east bay from high ward and union city, hayward and san leandro toward union city. we have one crash reported westbound 92 that is your commute direction, around
6:20 am
industrial. it looks like everything's made its way to the shoulder, and actually the bigger buildup is because the folks are waiting to pay over there at the toll plaza and get across this bridge, which you see the volume westbound across 92. the peninsula building just a bit. no problems through san mateo, and no surprises for the peninsula side, so that's a much better drive. a nice ride for all of the agencies as well. b.a.r.t. is running, 49 trains on time, samtrans, and golden gate ferry a beautiful day to try that out and this approach into san francisco, you see the fast track lanes here, they're packed up. these cash payers a lot lighter there, so pay cash over on the left side and you get out of the backup there. back to you. >> there you go. a little tip, too. still ahead, on our next half hour, new developments and mounting pressure on airplane maker boeing. the new countries grounding planes overnight after that deadly crash in africa over the weekend. the plan, a relaxing spa day.
6:21 am
but instead, a fight that required hour expertise. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, "nbc bay area responds," next. and on facebook, "today in the bay's" mike inouye posting a warning for north bay drivers for next week. find out more about the roadwork being done near the robin williams tunnel. be sure to follow mike. you're watching "today in the bay." 6:21. as the crisis in venezuela

new interview of a woman attacked by a jaguar apologizing. >> we're all human. we make mistakes, and i learned my lesson. >> for now, the jaguar is not on public display. the zoo says that they've hired a consultant to examine the barrier. we're also learning the exact same thing happened at the same enclosure with the same jaguar just last summer. >> 6:25 for you right now. nbc bay area responds to a south bay womans who gift cards end up worthless. >> she asked consumer investigator chris chmura and his team to help her get some value for them. >> good morning. celia bought gift certificates for two friends to use as a spa in nearby los gatos. when her friends tried to make an appointment, celia says no one answered. it turns out the spa had been sold. celia talked to the new owner she told celia she was no longer accepting old gift cards, so celia turned to us.
6:26 am
we got a discussion going and the new owner did something they didn't have to, they agreed to accept the gift cards for $400 worth of beauty products. gift cards are one of the most common complaints we get. we received more than 190 since 2016. california law protects your gift cards and forbids expiration dates, but does not say anything about a change in store ownership. we say use them quickly. call us any time, 888-996-tips, or visit nbcbayarea.com/responds. still ahead for you this morning, on "today in the bay," possible new height. in san jose, the step forward for a plan to allow skyscrapers in the south bay. the toll being considered in the north bay, how supporters say the money would help keep a road open during bad weather. and at 6:45, a new look at possible changes coming to sfo. the push to improve a tribute to the late harvey milk. we're back in two minutes with

6:30 am
let's head over to meteorologist kari hall with a look at that forecast for us. >> it's nice to have another day where you can leave the umbrella at home for most of the bay area, but we're also going to see a few more clouds, so it won't be as clear as it was yesterday afternoon. here is a live look outside in oakland this morning, already busy with temperatures at 46 degrees, but look at how cold it is in the north bay, as well as the tri-valley, with some upper 30s. so a cold start if you're on your way out the door to the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station, expect temperatures in the upper 40s by 8:00, headed up to close to 60 degrees. we will get a look ahead to the weekend forecast that looks absolutely amazing. that's coming up in about six minutes, and mike, you have a look at the commute, maybe not so amazing? >> you know, not so amazing, but not so bad. folks, we're slowing down in the south bay, with your northbound push through san jose, and that's pretty standard about this time. the rest of the bay lighter than standard especially for tuesday. 680 for pleasanton, 880 out of san leandro. we have a traffic alert for
6:31 am
folks coming out of tracy and stockton for 205 and 580 as they merge at grant line road, there is a big pothole and actually that's where they did repair work yesterday. sounds like the repair work didn't stick. coming toward me into antioch out of pittsburg and bay point a car fire, no slowing, westbound does build and southbound 680 builds coming in toward walnut creek. you saw that blip. it's extensive on the live shot. folks here a lot of jammed folks making their way toward 24. lafayette and orinda, back to you. >> 6:31. this morning, more countries are grounding boeing 737 max 8 planes following that deadly plane crash in ethiopia. over the past hour, malaysia and australia say they will halt operations. the plane will not be able to fly in china, singapore, indonesia and argentina yep aero mexico is also not using the
6:32 am
plane. the crash killed all 157 people on board including from brothers from redding. it's not clear what brought that plane down. the reason why concerns are mountding is because the same type of plane crashed last year in indonesia. among the victims of the latest accident, ann musioki, she was the wife and mother of three young children, and she worked at san francisco's tech soup. a memorial is growing outside of a redding catholic chump for melvin and bennett rivall. senator dianne feinstein is calling for planes to be grounded here in the u.s. passengers are split on whether that should happen. >> i'm about to ask what the plane is that i'm about to board, and i definitely have second thoughts if it was that plane. >> i don't believe it should be grounded. at some point we need to trust the institutions and the laws that are there to verify something is safe or not. >> southwest and american airlines, which have dozens of the planes in their fleets, say that they're confident
6:33 am
in the safety of the aircraft. new for you this morning, the future of san jose's skyline is up in the air, and i'm meaning we could watch it rise. the city council is considering whether to allow builders to put up taller buildings in downtown and near san jose international airport. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from downtown san jose. what's happening here? >> reporter: hi there, marcus. construction of skyscrapers like this one here behind me could be up to three stories higher here in the downtown area, up to seven stories, 15 stories higher near diridon station if the city council moves forward with the plan. i want to show you an animation that looks like what it looks like skyline going up. building heights up by 35 feet downtown, construction could be 150 feet higher in the diridon station area. the city estimates that $4.4 billion more in construction value would be added to the
6:34 am
city, which would lead to $5.5 million more every year in terms of property taxes. it could also mean some changes for air traffic. now the city did ask the ten passenger airlines plus fedex and u.p.s. that serve mineta san jose to weigh in. they expected minimal impact to their operations with the higher skyline limit under consideration. the city asked the faa and i posted this on twitter and facebook. at this point it seems the majority of people are in favor of a higher skyline but they have questions about how this is going to impact those flight paths and also safety for airliners and the folks who are living near around that flight path, but of course, the city had to go through the faa to talk about, this because the buildings are far away from the flight path itself, it doesn't seem like the flight path would be affected, but if you want to know more, go to san jose city hall, they're meeting at 1:30

today. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks, kris. san ramon valley teacher also vote on a contract agreement reached friday. voting doesn't start until this afternoon and teachers have until thursday to cast their ballot. that deal includes a 4% pay hike and creates new caps on class sizes. a follow-up to the cleanup efforts in the north bay after historic flooding swept through. the board of supervisors will vote on approving nearly $3 million to go towards repairs. recent winter storms caused the russian river to spill over. nearly 2,000 homes damaged. governor gavin newsom declared a state of emergency in sonoma county shortly after it happened. today, supervisors will also discuss recovery efforts following the 2017 wildfires. at 6:35 for you right now, drivers probably don't want to hear this, but there is talk of another toll bay in the area. flooding recently shut down highway 37. look at all this damage here.
6:36 am
all of that is prompting marin county supervisors to study how to pay for improvements. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is live for us at highway 37, where we could possibly see a toll plaza someday, sharon? >> reporter: well, it isn't clear, marcus, if or where the toll plazas would go, but that would be part of the study,'board of supes approves it today. flooding last month forced highway 37 to close, and that wasn't the first time the marin county board of supervisors will meet to study long-term solutions and how to pay for them. a toll would be one option. "independent journal" reports the levees and roads need improvements. drivers hoping the board can figure out funding without charging tolls on the highway between marin and sonoma and napa counties. >> should be able to afford it without, you know, they want to fix it, they could just fix it. there are roads that are messed up, they can fix it, you know. it's just annoying.
6:37 am
it's frustrating. >> reporter: one expert tells the "independent journal" that the area is sinking and this problem needs to be addressed. the meeting starts at 9:30 this morning. i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." might not like to pay for things but we have to find the funds and i'm glad they're investigating over here but it has been happening a few times with the recent rains. 37 is open, that's the area that was closed off the last couple of rains. sharon is talking about trying to figure out a way to raise that roadway, pay for it. over here, way way 4 a new crash somewhere between 242 and 680. that will slow folks down more as we see the slower drive through concord. the rest of the contra costa county drive is looking good. the freeways down into the south bay as well. that arrow over there that you see on the right, that is west 580, where they're doing the pothole repair. we got a picture from dublin chp, we can pull it up here and look at that, this big pothole

is going across the second lane, they have to fill that in again. they tried to repair it yesterday but apparently the repair work didn't stick. that's why you're not allowed to drive on the two lanes. this is a problem after the rain. it's all over the place. >> they're really all over the bay area. it is so true. it's not just my bad driving! >> totally separate issue. so a the lo of the caulot o that is the rain. >> we have the chance to dry out and over the next few days looking forward to some sunshine in the forecast and look at the weekend. we're going to be up to 70. 73 degrees for the inland areas and in san francisco also, very nice, with some upper 60s. so what are you going to do? how about the weekend forecast, st. patrick's parade happening in dublin. it starts at 9:30 in the morning but we know the celebrations go on all day and there will be a few more clouds, a cool start, but then as we go into the afternoon, reaching into the upper 60s. if you're planning to go to the

"we saw a lot of anti-israel policies start under the obama administration, and it got worsts and worse. there is an anti-semitism in the democratic party." president trump said the same thing in front of tv cameras on friday and according to axios quoting three people said in private democrats hate jewish people, this was at a fund-raiser in florida over the weekend. naturally the press asked the white house about that, asking specifically more than once, did the president of the united states really say democrats hate jewish people? >> you're not answering the question. is there a reason -- >> i believe i answered it twice. >> you didn't say yes or no. does he believe democrats hate jews. >> i think that's a question you ought to ask the democrats. >> speaker of the house nancy pelosi says she's not interested in impeaching the president, not for impeachment, she said.

the announcement came as part of an interview with "the washington post," where she said she was plaguing news and "unless there's something so compelling and overwhel thing? and bipartisan, i don't think we should go down that path, because it divides the country, and he's just not worth it." that does leave pelosi a pretty big hole she can walk right back through if the mueller report, for instance, indicates that president trump committed crimes. there we are, but pelosi also knows impeachment is only practical if a significant number of republicans join the effort. remember democrats wanted to impeach nixon early on but nixon's presidency wasn't doomed until members of his own party decided enough was enough. nixon of course resigned before the articles of impeachment could be enforced. we're watching everything that's happening in washington, follow me on twitter, i a am @scottmcgrew. we've been celebrating a lot of birthdays around here, mine was last week, kari's was on sunday. today happy birthday to the

approaching from the north. as this moves in, it will bring us some gusty winds, a few more clouds. i'm keeping a slight chance of rain in the forecast, mostly for the north bay, but overall models are not picking up on any rain, and as we go into the afternoon to evening hours, it's just going to be windy. going hour by hour, this shows our wind speeds in miles per hour and the direction of those winds. at noon, our winds are mostly at about 25 to 30 miles per hour, and once again, this is because of a cold front moving in that brings in those winds up to 38 to possibly 40 miles per hour later on this evening, it will gradually start to calm down, going into tonight. that's my only concern in this whole day forecast will be the gusty winds today. after that, nice quiet weather, sunshine, and a gradual warming trend gets under way. we go from 61 today for the high to 73 degrees on sunday, and more sunshine into the start of next week. mike, you're busier, tracking two traffic alerts. >> i am, kari, but the good news
