"today in the bay" starts right now. a very good friday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for marcus today. we'll get to the developing story out of new zealand in a few moments. first we want to get to your weather forecast with vianey. >> good morning. we'll notice clear skies right now. it's a little dark out there but you'll feel the temperatures are chilly once again. 40 degrees in san jose. wind speeds very light, 5 miles per hour in through the area and

also seeing some 30s still on the map. 37 degrees. again, we are expecting the gradual warmup into the weekend and it's going to make its arrival as early as today. some areas are expected to hit a high of 68, maybe even 70s on the map through the interior valleys. san jose's temperature trend by 8:00 a.m. still in the 40s but eventually by about 11:00, 56 degrees again. it's a beautiful day. plan for a lovely afternoon. let's get a check of the traffic with mike. >> i always plan for a lovely afternoon, but vianey, you tell me whether it's true or not. a lovely drive, southbound 280 at sand hill road we have a crash and sounds like everything's on the shoulder. i'll still monitor that. sand hill road, you heard of that, that's scott mcgrew's podcast, check it out. contra costa county, a great drive coming into the area. no delays across the bridge rio vista and a lighter flow of traffic, better speeds coming out of the altamont. i think they got that overnight roadwork picked up early trying to get the weekend started.

walnut creek no problems. new flashing lights, i'll check that out north 680, back to you. developing this morning in new zealand, a tale of horror has worshippers are slaughtered in a terrorist attack. >> this morning the number of dead is at 49, after a mass shooting targeting two different mosques and the gunmen live streamed the whole thing on facebook. the terror unfolded around 1:30 friday afternoon local time in the city of christchurch, that is the largest city on new zealand's southern island. right now, it is believed that one man armed to the hilt attacked both of those mosques, but authorities are not yet confirming that it is, in fact, the same person. in both cases, the gunman walked through the front door during friday prayers and started firing at will. dozens of other people are injured in addition to the dead. authorities say four people are in just custody, three men and woman. one of them is believed to be the gunman. a witness describes the horror. new zealand's prime minister describes a nation in shock.

>> i saw that some people were running out through my room, where i was in, and also i saw some people had blood on their body and some people who were limping. >> i don't expect this kind of this i thing in new zealand. >> what i can say that it is clear, this is one of new zealand's darkest days. clearly, what has happened here is an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence. >> schools in the city were on lo lockdown for several hours. when authorities realized the gunman posted a live stream of the act, they pulled it from media sites. the mass shooting in new zealand a world away is having an impact in the u.s. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live outside the islamic center of san francisco with details for us. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and kris.

the plan by san francisco police is to patrol mosques around san francisco, including this one here, at the islamic center in san francisco. we haven't seen any patrols yet but we know that's the plan, at least that's what they're tweeting, the tweet they sent out following this tragedy there in new zealand, their sfpd is following the event at christchurch, new zealand. they will make extra passing calls at san francisco mosques. please, if you see something, say something, that's something they always say whenever they're following up on any incidents. there are other departments around the country that are also stepping up their police patrols, such as lapd, who announced late last night they're adding patrols around motsi mosques in los angeles. there's no apparent threat in l.a. but extra patrols were added nonetheless. cair sacramento, the chapter on american islamic relations, the executive director, the e.d. there, i assume, has family in

new zealand and says there's a lot of refugees there who left war-torn countries to find a safe haven, only to be murdered, absolutely heartbreaking." that's what a lot of us are feeling, this say heartbreaking incident. of course we'll keep an eye on local reaction here locally as well as on the state level, and provide any updates as they come in. we're live here in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> we'll check back with you. thank you, pete. 4:35 right now. in the bay area, a once raging inferno in contra costa county is out this morning. three homes destroyed after flames erupted on bethel island. thick, black smoke could be seen for miles. the fire started just before 6:00 last night. complicating the battle to put it out, the fact that the island doesn't have a fire station and the only fire hydrant is downtown. >> we have a fire pump hooked up to the water itself, in the delta, but yeah, we had to turn it on and use it but there's no one here to operate it that knew how to use it. >> the cause is under

investigation this morning. luckily, no one was hurt. two stanford students are now leading a class action lawsuit in the wake of the college admissions scandal. in addition, a former oakland teacher is seeking hundreds of billions of dollars she says the rich parents who the feds say rigged the system and it hurt her son. "today in the bay's" sergio quintana is live at stanford. >> reporter: student khalil woods is one of the lead plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit against eight universities and william singer. in the suit she says her stanford degree won't be worth as much as it was before the cheating scandal. there are mixed reactions from fellow students not involved in the suit. >> definitely might have some impact in terms of how people value the degree here. >> no, personally i don't think it has a measurable impact. >> reporter: nbc bay area legal analyst steven clark says the plaintiffs are looking to get application fees back. >> everyone that applied to yale and didn't get in, everyone that applied to stanford, all of

those application fees aren't much individually but when you group them together it could be a significant amount. >> reporter: stanford issued a statement about the lawsuit saying it's without merit and the university stands behind its admissions process. the second lawsuit by former oakland teacher jennifer k.toi goes after the wealthy parents and coaches who helped in the scheme. "i'm now outraged and hurt, because i feel that my son, my only child, was denied access to a college not because he failed to work and study hard enough but parents felt it was okay to lie, cheat and steal." >> there is no rational way that person will recover anything remotely close to that. >> reporter: some parents are paying the price. lori loughlin is cut by hallmark and her daughter from sephora. an investigation is under way this morning after two dead grey whales were found inside

good morning. i'm frank holland at cnbc global headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is set for a higher open this morning. yesterday's stocks were mostly lower as investors digested news that suggested that the trade talks between the u.s. and china have stalled against the backdrop of weak data out of the world's second largest economy. on today's watch list, reports on industrial production and consumer sentiment. uber could make its debut on wall street next month. reports say the ride hailing company is planning to kick off its ipo process in april, which

would put it close on the heels of smaller rival lyft which can expected to go public by the end of march. ubl uber will have the biggest challenge to explain a business that is more complex than lyft. it offers bike and scooter rentals, food and package deliveries and a self-driving karounity. apple has not said what caused the icloud disruption yesterday which included sign-in, backup, contacts, mail and file storage. it's the third major tech outage this week, following gmail and google drive, as well as facebook, instagram and whatsapp. >> and people actually got work done because of all that. >> that is true. >> thank you, frank. >> they were bored but more productive. >> exactly. this is what we used to do in 1990. >> work. coming up on "today in the bay," your friday weekend

a very good friday morning. taking a live look up in palo alto this morning. folks are already making their way out the door, maybe get a jump on that weekend. 4:45 right now. this is a reminder to everyone, keep your full focus when you are on the road driving. so important for all of us to do. a man in china took to social media to show off his new porsche. the problem, he did it while he was speeding down the highway. look at that, minutes later he crashed it trying to answer his phone. the damage was nearly $60,000. no one was hurt in this one. he's lucky no one else was hurt. the accident caused to others. who cares about the cost to his car? could have potentially taken somebody's life. just not worth it. put your phone down. >> put your phone down. >> apparently while taking that video, got a call, tried to answer the call, led to a crash. >> the dealership saying the payment didn't go through. >> read the manual. it doesn't advise that. >> at all. okay, so finally friday.

>> finally friday. >> it's so pretty out. >> it's beautiful, and the temperatures are going to get warmer, guys. right now in san jose, we've got the clear conditions, and take a look at the current temperatures, 40 degrees, clear skies, still a little cool out there, wind speeds at 5 miles per hour and throughout the bay area, some spots are running a little bit warmer, that's because we might see a little bit more of high cloud activity in through the afternoon, but still cold this morning. look at santa rosa, 39 degrees, napa 38, down through mountain view, also at about 38 degrees, and these 30s and 40s will gradually warm up into the 50s, by about midday, but let's look at doppler radar now. i'm showing you this because we notice that we get, again, a couple of high clouds rolling through but notice, no green on the map which for us on radar typically means rain, so not tracking any rain. we're just tracking high pressure, that's going to keep us dry and going to warm us up. so let's talk about your microclimate forecast for today. we're talking mid to upper 60s, and yes, even some 70s on the

map. napa at 68 degrees. oakland 65. san jose 69 degrees. might even creep into the 70s. your outlook on your skies, well, look at that, we've got clear conditions, and overall, the long range outlook, we're going to keep that high pressure, keeping us warm through sunday into monday, and now, our next chance of rain looks like it's not going to move in, until late tuesday. there it is right there, approaching into wednesday, that's where we're going to get the next best chance of seeing some more rain, not just for northern california but check that out, through southern california as well. so kind of plan ahead. rain not expected until late next tuesday into wednesday. right now it's not looking like a big storm, and then things are going to get a little bit cooler right after that storm passes through, and that's going to set us up for a little bit of a change, just in time to head into the first week of spring. st. patrick's day, 71 degrees in san francisco. by monday we remain in the 70s. the rain chances look to move in tuesday into the first day of spring, which is officially on wednesday, so we're getting a

little bit of spring showers in through wednesday. mike, how are you roadthe roads? >> looking great. folks trying to get to work across the benicia bridge, there is a little bit of a slowing registering there, but that construction did pick up, i just checked cal trans report. if it doesn't clear up in the next few minutes i'll coax the maps to change. note, it will be green across that benicia bridge right now. a crash over here eastbound 24, looks like it cleared up, and another one westbound getting over toward the caldecott. i'll keep it clear from the incident, just not so we don't scare anybody. no problems through the caldecott tunnel. rest of the bay shows a nice drive, just a little slowing out of the altamont. the overnight road crew got an early start to their weekend, good stuff for them so they're clear. 280 at 87, 87 north at 280, earlier crash had activity on the shoulder so we're just tracking that. it will be some flashing lights downtown and across the bay, there is the san mateo bridge, steady as they go.

back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. now to the follow-up on that partial massive facebook outage, stocks for the social media giant fell nearly 2% yesterday because of that. the outage was facebook's longest, which lasted 23 hours, as you may already know. it is also believed that a "new york times" report contributed to the drop in the stock prices. the paper reported that federal prosecutors are conducting a criminal investigation into data deals facebook struck with 150 tech companies. back to the outage though, a spokesperson says that it started when the company made configuration changes toi its servers. facebook is not saying how many users were affected. a top facebook executive is leaving, chris cox departing after 13 years with the social media giant. last may, cox was promoted to being in charge of facebook's apps, including instagram, messenger and whatsapp. ceo mark zuckerberg said cox wanted to move on several years

ago but decided to hold off leaving while the company fought misinformation and russian meddling in the wake of the 2016 presidential election. presidential hopeful and california senator kamala harris says she supporting stopping the death penalty at the federal level. she made that declaration during an interview on npr yesterday. she says if she was elected, no one in the u.s. would be executed. she also applauded the governor's decision to use executive action to stop capital punishment in california. president trump tweeted earlier this week he disagreed with the governor's decision, saying "friends and families of the always forgotten victims are not thrilled, and neither am i." a live look at sfo this morning, that airport is now the subject of a lawsuit with taxi drivers and the sf mta. according to "the examiner" the agency put rules into effect that give priority to taxi drivers picking people up from the airport who have special
