world. let's begin with miguel almaguer in christchurch. >> reporter: the first of those on two mosques that were attacked is behind me, crime scene investigators are still here looking for more evidence piecing together what happened. this as there are many memorials popping up all across this nation. there are more tears here than blood shed. we're also learning more about the suspect. an alleged killer in court, charged with murder in the deadliest mass shooting in new zealand history, the main suspect, blurred here under new zealand law but identified by u.s. and australian sources as 28-year-old branton tarrant. appearing defiant, making a hand signal associated with white nationalism. authorities believe he stormed two mosques in the southern city of christchurch friday, live streaming the rampage. this image taken from inside the taker's c e attacker's car moments before gunning down at least 49 people.

>> i saw my son and my wife and the crying and shouting. and bleeding. and i can't do anything for everyone. >> reporter: relatives still waiting for news of loved ones as bodies are recovered. >> people don't know if their family members are alive or dead. and if they are alive, they don't know where they based. >> reporter: an apparent anti-immigration, anti-muslim manifesto was posted online ahead of the attack, as well as images of weapons and ammunition, covered in anti-immigration messages on a twitter account linked to tarrant. the prime minister saying the weapons used in the attack were acquired legally and vowing to tighten gun laws. >> i can tell you one thing right now. our gun laws will change. >> reporter: australian media say tear ranarrant grew up in aa and worked as a personal trainer and had travelled in europe and asia. two other suspects are in

custody, their role unclear as police search a residence using a bomb disposal robot. meanwhile tributes pour in from around the world. >> our hearts go out to our brothers and sisters as well as our prayers. >> reporter: as new zealanders unite in the face of extreme hate. with the death toll at 49, we also know more than 40 people were hospitalized, many were injured with gunshot wounds. at least two remain in critical condition. hundreds of family members are still waiting word of their loved ones. we expect the full list of the dead to be released later today. back to you. >> heart dltd brebreaking. >> and here at home security is being stepped up at mosques throughout the country. on friday president trump condemned the massacre saying the u.s. stands with new zealand, but he is drawing renewed scrutiny for saying that he didn't see white nationalism as arising threat. geoff bennett has a lot more on that this morning.

>> reporter: good morning. president trump has been clear in condemning the new zealand attacks, but while expressing support for those affected by the shootings, the president down played the threat posed by the kinds of white nationalists who are suspected of being involved andly response is raising fresh questions about the extent to which president trump has a responsibility to moderate his language given the rise in white supremacy movements across the world. president trump sharing his condolences friday following the terror and tragedy in new zealand. >> these sacred places of worship were turned into scene he is of evil killing. you've all been seeing what went on.mohorrible, horrible thing. rut t >> reporter: the gunman left behind a manifesto describing himself as a white nationalist. and he also mentioned president trump in a single reference criticizing the president as a policymaker while praising him

as a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose. the president's critics pounce going, blaming his incendiary rhetoric for fueling rage, resentment and even violence among the far white. >> words have consequences. i think the public discourse from the president on town isdo factor. >> reporter: from proposing a ban on muslims entering the u.s. -- >> donald trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the united states. >> reporter: to sympathizing with white supremacists after the deadly clash in charlottesville. >> you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. >> reporter: the white house rejecting any link between the attack and the president. >> it is outrageous to even make that connection between this deranged individual that committed this evil crime to the president.

>> reporter: and president trump when asked by reporters friday said he does not see white nationalism as arising threat around the world. >> i don't really. i think it is a small group of people that have very, very serious problems. >> reporter: and homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen says the u.s. was not aware of any domestic threat and that there was no information regarding obvious ties between the suspects in new zealand and anyone in the u.s. peter, sheinelle. >> geoff bennett, thanks. and meantime there is a fight brewing in washington a day after the president issued a veto for the first time after congress voted to reject his emergency declaration over the border wall. kelly o'donnell is following that story for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the president at least appeared to brush off any disappointment over the rejection he was dealt by republicans. not so much over the border wall, but over his use of this national emergency power to build one. he plowed ahead in a celebratory

mood and said in the next few days without specific evidence that the federal government will sign contracts to build hundreds of miles of new wall. surrounding himself with praise and law enforcement -- >> our hats are off to you again, sir. >> reporter: the president turned to critical reprimand from congress into an oval office event to boost his leadership style. >> you're keeping your word by vetoing this legislation. >> reporter: using the power of the pen for his first ever veto. >> so let's get this signed, right? >> reporter: the president blocked congress' effort to stop the national emergency he declared to build a southern border wall. and he played down the sizable defections from his own party. 25 republican lawmakers had joined democrats to reject his national emergency as an overreach of executive power. but mr. trump claimed he had not

twisted any arms. >> i said i want you to vote your heart, do what you want do. i'm not putting any pressure. i'll let them know when there is pressure, okay? i told them that. >> reporter: yet he called republicans who voted with him courageous. >> i have to in particular thank the republicans strong, wonderful people, the republican senators that were on our side and on the side of border wall. >> reporter: speaker pelosi labeled the president's actions a lawless power grab. announcing her next move. on march 26th, the house will once again act voting it override the veto. however, a two-thirds majority is needed and considered unlike unlikely. with immigration central to his campaign -- >> finish that wall because we've built a lot of it. >> reporter: the president seemed eager to tankle with democratic challenger beto o'rourke. >> i see a new candidate who is in the mix, he wants to take down the walls. try that sometime, you'll see

what will happen. >> reporter: the former texas congressman beto o'rourke has said publicly he would want to remove walls at the border. that appears to be what the president was referencing there. and chuck schumer, the leader of democrats on this windy morning here at the white house said that democrats would persist in trying to uphold the constitution and they will again vote not only in the house but perhaps in the senate to try to override that veto. but as it stands right now, it appears that there are not sufficient votes to override the president's veto. >> all right, kelly, thank you. phillip rucker is white house bureau chief for the "washington post." phil, good morning. >> as kelly mentioned, the republican party has stood by president trump through many a verse circumstance but now a dozen republican senators have voted with the democrats of course to block the president's national emergency declaration. put it into done text for conte. how big of a deal is this rebuke?

>> it is significant and it is a rare rebuke. it is so much more significant because it is on his signature issue of immigration. clearly these republicans have been uncomfortable with the president's expansive use of executive power here and were willing to defy him here. and it wasn't just the ones like mitt romney, but there were others as well. marco rubio, roy blunt, across the spectrum these republicans said this was not okay. and they were trying to defend their constitutional powers in the congress. >> i want to turn your focus to what a lot of the world is watching, it took place that terrible tragedy in new zealand. the president again yesterday down played the threat of white nationalism. he was asked whether it is rising and he said i really don't think so. but the facts show something very different. the southern poverty law center says there is a 50% increase just last year alone in white

nationalist groups here in the united states. so why does the president continue to downplay or dismiss white nationalism and is there anybody in the white house who is urging him to be more forceful in his condemnation? >> yeah, it is an important issue. and again and again we've seen from president trump an unwillingness to confront the rise in white nationalism which is occurring all around the world and here in the united states. you saw it a couple years ago with that deadly white supremacist attack rally in charlottesville, virginia where the president said there were good people on both sides of that protest event. and you know, people inside the white house, his spokespeople have historically been much more forceful in condemning these attacks and condemning white nationalism and white supremacy than the president himself and we saw that again yesterday afternoon. >> phil rucker helping us with all this. thanks very much. we turn now to the growing

threat in the midwest. the weather has left rising floodwaters in its wake forcing people to flee for their lives. dylan is tracking this for us. >> and this is really a dangerous scene. several midwestern governors have declared states of emergency. roads are closed, homes are flooded and people are cut off. stranded on their rooftop, nebraska's air national guard comes to the rescue of these people in are arlington. on the ground, a man with a military truck rescuing neighbors in riverside lakes. >> i was scared that we weren't going to make it. >> reporter: conditions so bad the national weather service had to evacuate its omaha office friday ominously sending its last message, until the flooding threat is over. the entire state of wisconsin under a state of emergency, floodwaters are streaming into dozens of homes in columbia county and ice damming is likely to make the situation worse. ice is building up on iowa rivers too. the town of could non rapids ha

seen flooding like this in nearly three decades. 300 homes are cut off in this trailer park, officials say it is too dangerous to get in or out. so far the bomb cyclone has produced mountains of snow, rivers of rain, and strings of tornadoes and winds strong enough to lift this st. louis woman right off the ground. >> i realized that being on, like i can't stop this from going, so i need to let it go. >> this storm has cleared on out, but we are still dealing with the flooding. in this part of the country because of the heavy rain, the snow melt and we still have about a foot left to melt and also the ice jams, so instead of things flowing, they are overflowing their banks. so in all, we have 300 rivers at or above flood stage, lots of those at moderate or major flooding. so this will continue to trickle down and it is causing the significance flooding that we're dealing with. that will remain an issue for quite some sometime even though the rain has stopped.

we're back on this saturday morning, march 16th, 2019. a great crowd on the plaza. many of them dressed in green. likely heading to 5th avenue and the annual st. patrick's day parade set to kick off in a few hours. >> let's begin this half hour with a check of your headlines. first the main suspect in friday's mass shootings at two new zealand mosques appeared in court overnight for the first time charged with murder. his face is blurred here under new zealand law, but he is identified as branton tarrant. and their prime minister vows that gun laws will change after it was noted that he had five firearms.

including two semi automatic weapons. tributes for the people today, mourners leaving flowers near the hospital. in paris, the yellow vest protests seem to have new life after dwindling numbers recently. today protesters are clashing with police throwing smoke bombs and other objects. this is a live picture right now. they are throwing those objects at officers along the champs-elysees. they arrested at least 20 people. a massive nine alarm fire in boston forced the evacuation of an entire neighborhood last night. it broke out at a casket company. smoke was so overwhelming, firefighters were ordered out of the building soon after they arrived. no one was injured, but it took firefighters about seven hours to contain the blaze. and police on staten island are still looking for the cold blooded killer who gunned down a reputed mob boss right in front of his home. the killing this week now has many people wondering if a

renewed mob war could be next. kathy park is here with more. good morning. >> good morning. so decades of relative peace ended wednesday night in a hail of gunfire. a man suspected of being a high ranking member in the new york underworld murdered. cali may have avoided the limelight, but his low profile did not protect him. this morning detectives still searching for a suspect in the shocking assassination of a reputed mob boss, francesco cali gunned down just steps from his staten island home wednesday night. police say the shooter initially ran into cali's suv to draw him out of his home. >> he exits his residence, has a conversation with an individual where approximately 12 shots are fired with at least six striking the victim. >> reporter: bloody hand prints

can be seen on cali's vehicle believed to be where he hid after bullets went flying. the motive, still a mystery. >> it is an unusual hit. if you're going to take out a boss, you going to send one guy? >> reporter: puzzling even for former gambino family mobster who served 8 1/2 years in prison for his crimes. >> if it is not a personal beef, and somebody in the family did it, it will slowly leak out because they got to get it out themselves as they start to make their grab for power. >> reporter: police say it is too early to determine if the murder was mob related. the gambinos were once among the most powerful mafia families in the country. but that began to crumble when its top leaders went to prison in the '80s and '90s, including john gotti, also known as dapper don. his younger brother gene was released a few months ago after serving 29 years. >> the mob is still very much alive.

the company says teams from across facebook have been working around the clock and are adding each video we find to an internal database which enables us to detect and automatically remove copies of the videos. other companies also say they have rigorous processes in place to manage and remove flagged videos. >> you are looking at some like a game of whac-a-mole where it keeps popping up in different places. >> facebook says it was alerted to this video by the new zealand police. that means human moderators or artificial intelligence didn't catch it. >> you wouldn't necessarily know that it was looking for this very precise thing. >> reporter: this is not the first time a heinous crime has been promoted on social media. in 2017, a man in cleveland broadcast his cold blooded shooting of a 74-year-old victim. and in 2015, after local news reporter alison parker and her photojournalist were shot dead on live television, the gunnen made posted video of the attack online. more than three years later, cyberspace still haunts her
