in washington. that's our top story this morning. >> president trump and republicans are now taking aim at the people behind the investigation while democrats say they still have a lot of questions. nbc's kristen welker has the very latest on this one. hey, kristen good morning. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. it is a full court press as the president and his allies look to build momentum and seek political revenge with the mueller report now finished but democrats aren't letting up in their demands to see the full report and to keep investigating, but will that strategy backfire? this morning the calls are growing louder to release the entire mueller report. in a letter to attorney general bill barr overnight, six house committee chairs demanding barr release release the full findings no later than april 2nd. monday mr. trump saying he's okay with releasing it. >> it wouldn't bother me at all. >> when asked by a reporter if mueller acted honorablies, mr.

hoda avenatti who gained notoriety for representing stormy daniels in her lawsuit against the president finds himself on the wrong side of the law. he's been arrested and charged with a number of crimes including trying to extort more than $20 million from nike. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer with the details this morning. >> good morning. avenatti one of the country's most high profile attorneys is now facing multiple charges in

new york and california after appearing in a manhattan courtroom monday he was released on $300,000 bond. when prosecutors say the allegations paint an ugly picture of lawless conduct and greed. >> reporter: overnight, attorney just hours after his arrest. >> i am highly confident that when all of the evidence is laid in connection with these cases, when it is all known, when due exonerated and justice will be done. >> reporter: on monday u.s. prosecutors on both coasts charging avenatti with a number of serious federal crimes. prosecutors in new york say avenatti tried to extort up to $25 million from nike allegedly threatening the shoe giant if they didn't pay up he would release information he claimed would damage the company. on monday just minutes before his arrest avenatti tweeting that he planned to hold a press conference to disclose a major high school college basketball

scandal perpetrated by nike that we have uncovered. >> avenatti used illegal and extortionate threats for the purpose of obtaining millions of dollars in payments for himself. >> reporter: nformation that is relevant to a government investigation. according to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter avenatti's unindicted co-conspirator is another high profile defense attorney mark geragos. he's known for representing quarterback colin kaepernick and actor jussie smollett. geragos's attorney telling nbc news mr. geragos has not been charged with any criminal conduct whatsoever. avenatti is also facing unrelated charges of bank fraud and wire fraud in california. prosecutors say he embezzled $1.6 million of a client's money to pay off his own debts. avenatti rose to fame representing adult film star

stormy daniels against president trump becoming a frequent critic of the commander in chief. >> we elected the wrong man to america. >> mr. trump's 2020 campaign manager firing back tweeting about the arrest, wow, what an amazing last 48 hours. >> so it's early in the case here myiguel, but how much prison time potentially could avenatti be facing if he were convicted? >> if he were convicted on all charges, both indictments, up to 97 years in prison. stormy daniels cut ties with avenatti. he must appear in federal court here on april 1st. >> thank you. craig joins the table now, we have more on the latest college admissions scandal. >> good morning. there's word of new investigations while the first wave of defendants charged in the scheme appeared in court, coaches charged with taking bribes test proctors accused of helping wealthy students cheat on admissions test.

joe fryer is there for us good morning to you. >> reporter: craig good morning, reports are emerging that the department of education is opening investigations into eight universities impacted by the some defendants make their first court appearances here in boston, and no parents but six of them coaches in the case known as operation varsity blues. inside federal court in boston pleas of not guilty outside a series of no comments. >> are you innocent of these charges? >> a dozen defendants appeared in court monday including coaches and athletic directors and test proctors indicted and charged with racketeering conspiracy appearing before a judge three at a time all pleaded not guilty. the attorney for wake forest women's volleyball coach bill ferguson says his client is innocent. >> no one, no one was admitted to wake forest who didn't earn it as a student and as an

athlete. bill ferguson does not belong i $100,000 bribe to designate one student as a volleyball recruit. wake forest says it does not plan to take any action against that student because there's no evidence she knew about the scheme. other universities have taken a harder line. yale announced monday that it has rescinded the acceptance of one student linked to the scandal. this as court documents show that yale's women's soccer coach rudy meredith has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors and plead guilty to fraud-related charges. >> any comment at all? >> reporter: also entering not guilty pleas, two once respected members of the university of southern california, assistant athletic director donna heimel and the water polo coach, winner of 16 national titles. usc has denied admission to six applicants because of their connection to the scheme. the university has not yet taken action against current students including actress lori loughlin's daughters. usc writing a case by case

review of current students who may be connected to the alleged scheme is also underway. but court documents identify many of those accused, some prosecutors. the payment has been referenced in court, but it's not included in the charging documents. prosecutors say the investigation is ongoing. >> joe, you mentioned a few of the parents there. when can we expect to hear from them? >> reporter: yeah craig, 33 parents are charged in this case. most are expected in court later this week some including felicity huffman and lori loughlin are scheduled to appear in court next week. back to you guys. >> joe fryer in boston for us thank you. now to several recent deaths that are rocking communities whose names we know all too well, newtown, connecticut, and parkland florida. three people who survived the initial tragedies have now taken their own lives. nbc senior national correspondent kate snow is covering this sad one. >> good morning, guys. these suicides are causing a lot

of pain and concern putting a new spotlight on survivors guilt. two students who survived the attack at high school apparently took their own lives last week, and now the father of one of the 20 children who died at sandy hook elementary is gone too. >> reporter: this morning two communities that have already suffered unthinkable loss are hurting again. jeremy richman whose 6-year-old daughter avielle who was killed at sandy hook elementary was found monday morning. in the years since sandy hook richman left his work as a neuroscientist to become a full-time advocate. last week he was in florida talking with parkland families and others about access to mental health care. he addressed the personal challenges he faced losing a shock to the system that you just feel displaced like you're -- like the world is spinning and you're not, and you're going to get thrown off of it and you have to find something to grip onto.

>> for richman, that something was the avielle foundation created to support research into brain abnormalties that could be linked to violent behavior. the foundation said in a statement about richman, tragically his death speaks to how insidious and formidable a challenge brain health can be. nine days ago, sydney aiello who survived the shooting at margekynl ri stoneman douglas high school also died. it's unclear if the two had any link but the two suicides in succession shocked people to the core. >> how are you guys doing? >> mostly just shock and slight anger just at like how we could help better support people going through these types of situations and going through these internal battles. >> sam grady was grazed by bullets and hit in a classroom a year ago. she talked with savannah and

hoda the next morning. >> and i know your best friend was shot right next to you. do you know how she's doing? have you been able to hear what happened to her? >> yeah unfortunately she didn't make it. >> sam and her friend em are seniors now with plans for college. they wonder if sydney aiello struggled because she was no longer surrounded by people who had a common experience. >> i think the problem is when we leave the school because now that's gone and that might have been what she was dealing with. >> after an emergency meeting on sunday the parkland community, the school district now offering counseling and several wellness centers, guys for people to get help. this is suc think about. i was thinking back to other shall? do kids tak we saw it after columbine, for example, everybody's so concerned that thise asking all of us to check in with our loved ones. as sam and em told me don't take i'm fine as an answer. probe deeper. if you're worried about someone we've got a list that the

how this luxury ship was stranded in a storm and how the emergency was handled. among the more than 600 americans thrown around as the ship listed from side to side danielle and shannon from connecticut, daniel in a wheelchair this morning. >> a huge wave hit, and suddenly both of us went this way, rolled onto the ground and down to the next level of steps, and i cut my knee open. the only person who came around who was able to help me was another passenger. >> reporter: as passengers huddled in halls and on floors the couples say it took five hours to be seen by an on board medic. >> he said well we got people dying on this ship. you're not a priority right now. >> reporter: they claim the cruise struggled to locate bandages and dressings and even life jackets. >> it took them probably a half hour to get enough life jackets. >> 30 minutes. >> reporter: they waited 18 hours to be winched off the ship

by helicopter. >> we said to each other i don't think we're going to die today, but we might. >> reporter: alexis shepherd live tweeted terrifying videos. >> one man fell and hit his head on a chair. he was completely covered with blood, and the medical staff took care of him very quickly. >> reporter: the viking sky was heading south hitting a cyclone in an area notorious for shipwrecks many asking why it sailed into a storm never reaching its destination. >> i don't know why they decided we're going to continue on. >> reporter: the company telling us in a statement its procedures were implemented to the highest standards and that the route was decided by a very experienced company. it says it's deemed safer to keep life jackets in central master points, and it says it's launched its own investigation. its chairman tonight personally a frightening end. there even appears to be confusion about how many people

a study revealing an alarming spike in pot-related er visits in colorado, which is the first state to lowlyallow legally selling marijuana for recreational use. gabe good morning. >> reporter: hi savannah good morning. colorado has long been a pioneer in this budding industry. researchers here at uc health say they're seeing more and more patients coming through these doors and edibles are making up a disproportionate share of the problem. this morning colorado's high stakes gamble on legal marijuana is taking a serious health toll. a new study finds pot-related emergency room visits tripled between 2012 and 2006 at the uc health university of colorado hospital. many of those visits connected to issues with edibles, candies or foods that are infused with cannabis. >> people will take them. they'll expect to feel the effects relatively soon. if they don't feel them rapidly,

facing a double barrel threat this week. wednesday temperatures warm up, 60s and 70s. that's going to melt the snow pack, and then we've got another system coming in. that heavy rain is going to increase the river levels there and cause problems. in fact some areas could pick up to three inches of rain and that will cause river levels to rise and unfortunately the river flood severity since the 20s has been increasing in the northeast and midwest while decreasing in the southwest. the strong upward trend shows from the mississippi and missouri river basins to see more flooding. as you look over the national climate assessment's next 50 years we see an increase in precipitation as you get into the winter 20% increase in some spots, 10 to 15% in other regions in the southwest, and in the spring a commensurate increase as you get into those northern areas. we will be looking most more flooding throughout this roej region and the upper midwest

can -- when it throws its weight, defies gravity. >> there weren't a lot of details on the arcade, newsstand. what do we think all of this is going to mean for the consumer? how much is it going to cost or do we even know? >> we don't totally know. the fine print in the apple announcement on the credit card was that somewhere between a 13% and 24% apr which is not a low apr, by any means. but then, you know, they have -- they were vague on the details on the new entertainment service, the rest of it. as a former magazine editor, i was alarmed they're going to be charging $10 a month for open access to over 300 magazines which to me really sinks the business model of a lot of -- >> but not all but for me that thing of just seeing how many different places they can choose to go with all of their money is incredible. >> what they did to the music industry is making it difficult for artists to make money. they're going to probably do to the magazine industry and possibly even television. >> that's right. and you see these weird

we're back with the complicated issue of women and money. >> yeah in america 30% of women earn more than their partners 50% of women are single and by 2030, 66% of the country's wealth will be controlled by women. >> women are starting to re-examine their relationship with money and how to get what we want. today financial editor jean chatzky is the author of a new book out today, it's called "women with money." she's here with questions women need to ask themselves. >> such an interesting topic. >> we're in the midst of this huge sea change power change

and over the last two years through my her money podcast i've been hearing from thousands of women who say i know i've got more money than ever before, but whether they've got a thousand dollars or $100,000 they don't feel in control, and they don't feel confident, so this is all about putting that confidence back in their hands. >> i think at different phases in our life we want and thingk we need different things. why don't we start with our 20s. you might have a job, you might have college loans. what should you be thinking about in your 20s? >> you should be thinking about if you're getting paid what you're worth. every single salary you're going to get the rest of your life hinges off this first sa of college negot leverage do you have in your 20s? you're right, it starts there and everything feeds off of it so it couldn't be more important. >> you've got more than you think. >> yeah? >> the job market is really good. people with credentials are wanted. you need to know what your number is and you need to ask for it. even if you don't get it you

need to ask can we revisit this in six months, and i want you to practice in front of a mirror. >> guys do it they do it much better. i don't think i ever asked for anything until later like in my 40s or later than that. >> even then it's so uncomfortable. >> it is. but a little practice makes it better. >> okay, we want to move to our 30s. i think we have a special guest questioner on our plaza, don't we? is mallory with us? >> hey, mallory. >> hi i'm mallory. i'm 35. i'm single. i'm saving up to buy my first house, but i work on tips and commission. i'm a hair stylist, i was wondering if you had any suggestions. >> yeah. absolutely. this is great, and it taps into something that's going on. we are seeing more single women buying homes than ever before. the trick to making this happen is trying to get to the if you can do that you will have enough moneyretirement. don't try to get there all at once. it will feel like a crash diet and you will just implode. nudge it up by about 2% a year until you get there, and she needs to separate her tips.

put it aside so she doesn't touch it. put it somewhere separate. >> tips and commissions can be changeable. you can't really plan around that. >> right. and it's cash. it's easy to spend. put it away, and then put it in a high interest rate savings account. >> let's move to our 40s. a lot of people i think just have like a checking accounting and a savings account, and they think that's fine but your money could be working for you. >> this is so important for women. on needs to be -- >> or under the mattress. >> or where it's safe. >> now we know. >> it needs to be invested. you need to put it in the market. i know it feels risky, but you're losing money when it's in the bank at 2% a year. >> what should you be investing? >> you need to be investing in a diversified portfolio. investing doesn't mean trading. we don't all have to be a fast paced trader. we just need to buy index funds. >> it feels like las vegas if you don't really know and it's kind of scary. >> make it simple. make it boring. put it in a target date

retirement fund that lines up when you want to retire and call it a day. you've got to make sure the money is going in and 90% of women tell us they want to invest, just get started one little step. >> who would you call first if you didn't know how to do it? would you call one of those -- >> if you've got a 401(k) at work i would call whoever administers that. if you don't, open an ira, fidelity vanguard schwab any of them they're all fine. >> all right. let's get to our 50s now. by the way, the usa today had an interesting article saying the job market is so strong that some women in their 50s are actually going back to work. >> and that article also said they're feeling great about the fact that they've got money coming in and it's theirs to control. which is really really important. in your 50s you need to pay attention to whether or not you have stepped out of your financial life. >> right. >> because now is the time when you need to know where everything is. you need to know what your

investments are doing for you. what your plan is for retirement, and whether you are going to have enough to last you long-term, and if you don't know it's time to check in with a financial adviser, maybe with a spouse if you've got one or a partner, make sure it's all buttoned up. >> you talk about women, they start as girls. our final thing has to do -- we're thinking about our little girls. what is it about how we teach our kids about money, but also how we teach little girls about money and frankly, teaching them just how to relate to the world, how does this like come into play? >> sadly, we daughters short sh rift compared to our sons. we teach our daughters about budgeting and we teach our sons about investing. >> is that true? how does it play out? >> it's the conversations we have with them over life because that's how we were taught but your daughters need to know they are capable. they can do this and just start by talking about your money at the dinner table. hey, mommy did this today.

good morning, 8:56. breaking news, we continue to follow nbc news confirming prosecutors in illinois have dropped all charges against actor jussie smollett tied to what police believe was a fake racially motivated attack. some of it may be tied to a check investigators believe smollett used to pay off two men accused of being tied to that incident. smollett was also accused of sending a fake threatening letter. the fbi may still be investigating that part of the case. rescue crews combing the waters searching for a man who went swimming early this morning with friends at rockaway beach. rescuers say they're looking for a 28-year-old man last seen in the water near the lighthouse hotel. the coast guard has helicopters in the air searching for him and our news crew saw a group of friends consoling each other along the coast. happening now,e're awaiting an update from rescue crews. we'll have it on your midday
