at times we will see light rain moving through. tracking it all on storm ranger. light rain mostly moving through the east bay and tri-valley. i'll have an update on what to expect. mike, you are tracking two crashes in the south bay. >> that's right. we are looking at 880 southbound approaching 237. just got word of the crash. a car hit the cement wall on the shoulder. no major injuries reported. flash lights. that's coming into san jose. 101 and 87 a looking great laura. back to you. p's family andhill this morning.

other wouse staffers got clearance. the team who did their background checks recommended against it. tracie potts has the story. >> reporter: well, democrats are demanding answers. and we are hearing from the whistle-blower, the woman who says she was on that team for many years and did the background checks but that this whose is overruling their recommendations. and in her opinion, putting national security at risk. >> 18-year security veteran, trisha newbold says she's speaking out to protect the country. >> it's important we stand up to do the right thing no matter what. >> reporter: she said the white house overruled her team's recommendations 25 times, approving security clearances for the president's son-in-law and adviser, jared kushner. his daughter ivanka trump. and others with what she described as serious disqualifying issues like foreign influence, conflict of

interest, financial problems. >> it's very, very concerning. they could be subject to manipulation by the countries, drug abuse, all kinds of things. >> reporter: newbold approached the house oversight committee. >> she was scared death. >> reporter: the committee issued for former white house personnel director to explain how security clearances are approved. >> they are asking for personal, private and confidential information from individuals that they know that they have no right to see. and they're putting the 3 million people that do have a security clearance at risk. >> reporter: we're now learning about a security scare at the president's florida estate. a chinese citizen arrested at the mar-a-lago club after talking her way in. authorities say her story didn't add up. her story may not have added up.

her story didn't add said she w swimming but she didn't have a swimsuit. authorities say is that not only were they the two passports that you just saw, but four cell phones, a laptop, a hard drive, a thumb drive with malicious software. they will try to authorize the chair to subpoena that report with no redactions, nothing taken out, and all the evidence behind it. democrats say they need that to figure out how the attorney general came to such a different conclusion than the special counsel on whether or not to pursue obstruction of justice charges against the president. the attorney general has to go through and take out secret grand jury information, classified information, and it will be the middle of the month before they get that report. so that's how he essentially blew right through the deadline that democrats set for yet. >> a lot of eyes will want to

see it. tracie, thanks so much. >> we'll beo see what happens. tracie potts live for us on capitol hill. thyoo today on capitol hill, that is nato secretary-general there jens stoltenberg will deliver remarks to a joint meeting of congress. this will be the first for the nato chief. his invitation to speak was issued jointly by republicans and democrats and is seen by some as an effort to counter trump's pushback against the alliance. new details this morning t tied to both recent deadly 737 max 8 crashes. first, the ethiopian airlines jet that crashed last month. wall street journal reporting that the pilots actually followed protocol and did turn off the autopilot mode before the plane crashed. some have been speculating the pilots may not have known how to disable the system. a preliminary report on the crash may be released sometime this week. in the meantime, a new u.s.

connection to the faulty sensor tied to last fall's lion air crash in indonesia. bloomberg reports the sensor had recently been repaired at a maintenance facility in florida. investigators are looking into the work done at that repair shop. signals from the sensor are believed to have forced the plane into a nose dive pitch. well, in a few hours, hundreds of bay area teachers will try to convince the state to give more money to your student's education. bob redell live for us outside the headquarters. teachers plan to rally today? >> reporter: correct, marcus. we're talking about 1,000 teachers from the east bay from districts like fremont, albany, alameda, hayward, san sacrament later to rally on the steps of the state capitol to pressure lawmakers to spend more money on schools and your student. according to the national education association, nea, california spends around $10,400

per pupil. that is $1,500 less than the national average. teachers say it's not enough, especially when they have to dig into their own pockets and spend hundreds of dollars on classroom supplies. they blame proposition 13 for lack of funds. you'll recall that's the 40-year-old voter-approved measure that limits the amount of taxes taken on levy ones properties. they want to lifted on large industrial land owners. the california teachers association has endorsed a ballot measure in 2020 that would do just that if voters passed the so-called community funding act. it is estimated school statewide would receive an additional $11 billion a year. reporting live here in fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay". aupdate students that may face homelessness may soon get help

from the state. a palo alto assembly member is colge ng a bill that would campus parking lots overnight. a recent study finds one in five community college students face homelessness in the last year. and also to help students, there's one more place for qualified students at san jose state university to grab a free meal for them. a new fully staffed spartan food pantry opens up today. the university is even offering special hours during spring break. the pantry is part of a special university charge program that really works with students in economic crisis situations. >> nice to see there. you know what is great too? a monster snowpack in the sierra. almost record levels. the crew that surveys the pack haoeubgd o hiked out to south of lake ta e tahoe. the water content way up 200% of

as it moves through the chico area. there was rotation with it. and the national weather service briefly issued a tornado s a t. but, yeah, a lot of heavy rain and also some thunderstorms. everything has since quieted down for now. we are going to start out with partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies and light rain. if you're on your way out the door heading to warm springs bart station, make sure you have the umbrella handy just in case. we will see scattered showers throughout the day. and mostly cloudy skies with temperatures in fremont 54 degrees and heading into the low 60s. mike, you have been tracking around the bay area the drive. but you are starting in the south bay. >> i am. we have two crashes i'm continuing to watch, kari. slowly both associated with the nimitz. typically we see orange and yellow. not the case this morning. lighter flow of trfi some schools are on spring break continuing this week. south 880, approaching 237.

google is told third-party employees they have to pay 15 bucks an hour and offer health benefits. tax bill is around $2,000. "the wall street journal" says president trump is complaining about jerome powell fed chair at three meetings in the past week alone and called powell on the phone last month. trump wants powell to resist raising interest rates so stock market performs better. the president, in fact, wants to fire powell, according to the journal but said, quote, i guess i'm stuck with you. powell was nominated to the post by mr. trump. it is exceedingly rare for a president to comment on fed policy. shares in lyft fell again. that would be the company's third day of trading in two of them the stock fell. just under $69 a share. that's below its price.

maybe light rain on on your way through the tri-valley and the north bay. this is the first storm moving through. the second one moving through on friday. it will be just in time for the home opener for the giants game. light. a break. more widespread rain tomorrow afternoon. continuing through friday. and then it gradually tapers off on saturday. we are going to have more wet weather moving through. and the possibility of getting in the north bay over an inch of for the sierra, we are going to, utrain a quarter to half an inch. can you believe it, see more snow coming through between now and the weekend. another foot of snow from donner summit to king bale. temperatures will warm up. the rain moves out on saturday. low 70s on sunday. and, mike, you're starting with a look at the bay bridge? >> i am, kari. not because it's a surprise. we know there will be backups. a pleasant look.

county and state on a google map. it is kpwaoeuld data showing the current addresses for people who filed for assistance. they are actually living out of state. 18,000 are elsewhere in butte county or nearby counties. really they are spread across the u.s. . 6:33. the housing crisis playing out on the peninsula. a battle brewing in mountain view over construction of townhomes that would force low-income residents out of their homes. "today in the bay" kris sanchez joining us with what happens next. kris? >> reporter: hi there, marcus. this is the complex in question. it is home to about 60 different families who say they can't afford to pay more than they already do, even if they could find housing that costs just a little bit more. the folks who live here$1,000 a month. and they have been worried about losing their homes ever since this other development started going up down the street.

this is rock street in mountain view. that was also affordable housing, rent-controlled housing that will now become luxury townhomes. at the mountain view city council meeting, a representative told counsel they have helped to pay future rent and moving expenses for people who needed to move and who qualified in the past and that they are willing to do it again. while the community members rallied before the start of this conversation at the council meeting it ended with six voting in favor of the demolition and one council member abstaining. but the council members are really a bit stuck in this one because they have to green light this project if it conforms to the city's building code and the zoning code, which it does at live here say they are going to continue to put pressure on the city to try and find some other solution to this demolition. in mountain view, kris sanchez, today tp"today in the bay" now the battle overpay. this afternoon interns and

residents at high land hospital in oakland are planning a walkout. they say that they are hoping to draw attention to yon going contract negotiations. the medical employees are asking highland for increased wages and housing allowances. many members of the union called the committee of interns and residents. now, the representatives there they say thisep workers at oakl highland hospital and half othee sta state. solano county representatives are to find out why an electrified bridge led to the death of two teenagers. grieving students gathered to mourn the loss of the boys. both were 17. they jumped into a canal to save a dog and touched the bridge, which is electrified. it electrocuted both of them. the dog was later rescued.

huffman paid $15,000 to doctor her daughter's s.a.t. results. and laughlin $500 in bribes to have her two daughters designated as recruits to the usc crew team. 30 other parents are charged in the scandal. a live report coming. today marks a rough time for youtube. a woman walked into the headquarters a year ago and opened fire before taking her own life. she had a long-running grudge against the company. her father reported her missing days before the attack and told police she might be headed towards youtube. the three victims in the shooting did survive. people in the south bay questioning a recent decision by a judge to release a man who sexually assaulted a woman shortly thereafter. gas station surveillance shows richard hernandez two weeks ago. he was throwing sticks at workers. police arrested him. he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. while prosecutors recommend he be held, according to court

records, he was release odd his own recognizance. hernandez was arrested six days later, accused of sexually assaulting a woman in her bedroom. this time he likely will not be released for some time. 6:44. the president is backing off his with mexico this week. scott mcgrew joins us with the second of two reversals this weekend. >> the other being health care, laura. mitch mcconnell saying there will be no new health care to replace obamacare any time soon. so the president backed off that claim. we have him meeting with the head of nato. he told him his father was born in germany. he was born in new jersey.

we have live video out of the house judiciary this morning talking about a subpoena today that would force the justice department to release the mueller report unredacted. not as easy as the congress's own laws protect the special counsel's report. also entirely normal to redact private grand jury testimony. clinton. president trump attacking the leadership in puerto rico. saying they take too much money from the usa. his words. puerto rico part of the usa. the president's spokesman was interviewed on msnbc and called it that country. he did it twice. >> they have had mismanagement of the goods and services we have sent to them. food just rotting in the ports. their governor has done a horrible job. he's trying to make political year and trying to find someone to take the blame off of him for not having a good grid and good system in that country. >> these are things that are not true.

as you head out for school in the south bay, kids heading to school under mostly cloudy skies. temperatures starting out mild with upper 50s. 58 at 10:00. low '60s as we go throughout the day. seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen. we takli san francisco. it will be a day you need the rain gear. grab the rain jacket and light long sleeves for the rest of the day as our temperatures head into the low '60s. storm ranger showing that for the most part we are all dry. you may still encounter some of the low clouds and fog making it drizzly at times. light rain in the forecast today as this storm system moves in. keeps the rain in the forecast through tomorrow. friday a new storm will approach bringing us heavier rain than what we will see today. scattered showers in our hour-by-hour forecast. look at how widespread by system afternoon. continuing to move through with
