good morning, everybody. welcome to "today." nice to have you with us on a wednesday morning. >> nice to have you back. you took quite a long trip for just a couple of days. all the way to the holy land. >> we we want to jerusalem. i just landed this morning. i had an extraordinary time. i can't wait to show you these pieces as we celebrate holy week in a few weeks. it was my first time there. a really incredible experience. i can't wait to share is it. in the meantime, though, top story is the troubling case tied to the president. this morning a chinese woman is facing charges after authorities say she lied to get into the president's mar-a-lago resort while he was staying there. and now investigators are looking into whether she may have been a spy. nbc's kerry sanders joins us with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the arrest is raising new concerns this morning. just how secure is mar-a-lago and president trump when he comes to mar-a-lago? according to court documents, the woman who was arrested got

past security because she said she was going to visit the swimming pool. but when secret service later talked to her, she didn't even have a bathing suit. this morning investigators are trying to determine if a chinese woman, who visited president trump's mar-a-lago resort last weekend was there on a spy mission. that woman now facing charges after the secret service says she lied to get onto the property. armed with four cell phones, a lapt laptop, an external hard drive and thumb drive with malware. according to court documents, she went to the so-called winter white house on saturday, telling secret service at the security checkpoint she was there to go to the pool. agents say she showed two chinese passports and was allowed in after mar-a-lago security believed she was related to a club member with the same last name. court documents pointing to a potential language barrier issue. the documents go on to say, she was taken to the main reception

after telling the shuttle driver she didn't know where she wanted to go. her conversation with the receptionist raising a red flag. when she allegedly changed her story as to why she was there. she said she was attending a friendship event between china and united states. the only problem, there was no event like that scheduled and she was arrested. allegedly telling investigators her chinese friend charles told her to attend this event and attempt to speak with a member of the president's family about chinese and american foreign economic relations. the secret service could not find any recovered of that. the president was at the resort for the weekend, but was golfing nearby when she arrived. the first lady and other members of his family were on site at the time. her attorney has made no comment. according to the secret service, when she was on property, she was never alone.

she was either with mar-a-lago staff or with the security. that is backed up by court documents. meantime, this morning, zhang is charged federally with knowingly entering a secure facility and lying to the secret service. savannah, hoda? >> we'll have to wait and see if there's more to this. thank you very much. we have more new information this morning on those two fatal crashes involving boeing 737 max planes as insiders tell congress that those who certified the max for flight may not have been. >> reporter: good morning. these are whistle-blowers telling congress that the very faa employees who should have been certified the max for flight, they themselves were not trained properly and they themselves may not have been certified and they warned the faa about this last summer. me

meanwhile, new details about the ethiopian airlines' final seconds. new details about the boeing 737 max jet that crashed last month. "the wall street journal" reporting the pilots at the controls of the ethiopian flight initially followed emergency procedures laid out by boeing. according to people briefed on the probe's preliminary findings, the pilots turned off the flight control system that was pushing the nose of the plane down. when that didn't work, they reportedly turned it back on but still regain control of the aircraft. meanwhile bloomberg is reporting that accident investigators in indonesia are looking at a maintenance shop in florida. according to documents obtained by bloomberg that shop did the repair work on the so called angle the day before it went down. it's believed bad sensors from that signal contributed to the indonesian crash. congress is demanding answers about the faa inspectors who

helped certify the max. telling the acting head of the faa, congress has received information from multiple whistle blowers alleging insufficient training and improper certification of faa safety inspectors. the concern, that poorly trained inspectors may have led to an improper evaluation of the anti call system suspected in those two fatal max crashes. last week the transportation secretary and the faa chief were grilled about why it took so long to ground the max. >> the faa did not feel that they had any information which would warrant the grounding. >> reporter: meanwhile the max fleet is likely to remain grounded for weeks or even months. boeing was originally expected to release a software fix this week but it now says it will take several more weeks a soft prayer flaw is suspected of forcing the ethiopian and indonesian jet liners into a fatal plunge which pilots could not recover. the faa promises rigorous

scrutiny but that alone won't be enough to get the max back in the air. boeing will have to regain the trust of the faa, the world's airlines and regulators. >> we're waiting for so many of the pieces of this puzzle. we were expecting a report from the investnvestigators. that's been delayed as well. >> we are expecting that any day. we've been told since monday it can be today, tomorrow, the next day. but if this reporting is correct suggesting that crews did exactly as they were supposed to, to turn off the m cast system, if that's accurate it would appear that boeing and the faa have another issue because the crews followed the procedure laid out by boeing. >> thank you for that. now to the growing accusations against former vice president joe biden. two more women alleging that he touched them inappropriately. andrea mitchell has been following the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this morning joe biden under

willing to plead guilty or do the prosecutors come to them no? how does this play out? >> we know that several people had the opportunity to plea initially because people bifflely pleaded out before this was unsealed and announced. obviously, the prosecutors told some folks, hey, you can get off this train if you cooperate. >> if they are still coming into court, which is not a pleasant experience, they have to come to the courthouse, does that suggest to you these defendants, lori loughlin, felicity huffman are prepared to fight and take it to trial? >> yes, looks like they are fighting. their reputations are on the line as we know. there is a issue if anyone has a defense, there is a lot of bad stuff on the record, could they argue maybe they were paying for services or advice, they didn't realize what this advice amounted to. >> felicity huffman is accused of spending $15,000 to have the answers on the s.a.t. changed. then you have lori loughlin and her husband who are accused of spending about $400,000 to get they are daughter into usc on the row team, even though she

never rowed. when prosecutors look at the amount of money involved, does that matter in terms of a potential sentence? >> it shouldn't matter that much. the big question here is were you paying to try to steal someone else's seat in college? not did you have a good or bad price on stealing the seat. >> is this thing about jail time at the end of all of it? is this going to be let's pretend there are some guilty verdict or pleas, are we talking fines or jail? >> it's hard to imagine the prosecutors want to put many people in jail for a long period of time for being parents. if they take responsibility and deal with it, in other words, yes, jail is definitely on the table. the question for people fighting is can they get off or do they look at harbsher sentences if they are later convicted. that's why it's high stakes today. >> i am glad you made that point, taking seats from other kids. >> it's a college admissions

but i slept nine hours. >> you were in israel? >> yes, a series we will do in holy week in a couple of weeks. all right. let's get to the news. starting this half hour, an arrest of a chinese woman accused of lying her way into president trump's mar-a-lago resort. she is under investigation now as a possible spy. nbc's kerry sanders is at west palm beach with the very latest on this story. it's alarming, kerry. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the arrest raising serious concerns this morning just how secure is mar-a-lago and the president when he is here. since being elected, president trump has spent close to 90 days at mar-a-lago. this morning investigators are trying to determine if a chinese woman who visited president trump's mar-a-lago resort last weekend was there on a spy mission. that woman now facing charges after the secret service says she lied to get on to the

property. armed with four cell phones, a laptop, an external hard drive and a thumb drive with malware. according to court documents, yujing zhang went to the so-called winter white house saturday telling secret service at the security checkpoint she was there to go to the pool. agents say she showed two chinese passports and was allowed in after mar-a-lago security believed she was related to a club member with the same last name. court documents pointing to a potential language barrier issue. the documents go on to say she was taken to the main reception after telling the shuttle driver she didn't know where she wanted to go. her conversation with the receptionist raising a red flag when zhang allegedly changed her story about why she was there. according to investigators zhang said she was attending a united nations friendship event between china and the united states that night. the only problem, there was no event like that scheduled and zhang was arrested.

zhang allegedly telling investigators her chinese friend charles told her to attend this event and attempt to speak with a member of the president's family about chinese and american foreign economic relations. the secret service could not find any record of that. the president was at the resort for the weekend, but was golfing nearby when zhang arrived. the first lady and other members of the family were on site at the time. zhang's attorney has not commented. meantime, she faces federal charges for entering a restricted building as well as lying to secret service. savannah, she could face other charges as well. >> kerry sanders at mar-a-lago. thank you. congress is launching an investigation of the faa inspectors who helped certify boeing's 737 max jetliners. the aircraft remain grounded after two deadly crashes overseas. the head of the senate transportation committee says whistleblowers raised concerns

about the training of inspectors who checked the anti-stall system suspected in those crashes. meantime, "the wall street journal" reports the pilots of the doomed ethiopian flight followed emergency procedures laid out by boeing but still failed to regain control of the aircraft. a follow-up to a story we told you about earlier this week. a suspect is under arrest in the hit-and-run that injured two girls who were playing in a front yard near atlanta. you remember this dramatic video of friday's crash. 28-year-old gabriel fordham turned himself in tuesday night. police say he was speeding when he hit a pair of mailboxes and struck the girls leaving a 9-year-old girl seriously injured. his attorney says fordham was fighting off an armed carjacker who allegedly ran away. two women have reportedly come forward to accuse former vice president joe biden of physical contact that made them feel uncomfortable. one woman telling "the new york times" that biden rested his hand on her thigh when she was a 19-year-old college student. she says it happened on an event on sexual assault. her account has not been

now, you should be over it. >> reporter: over it? >> i felt like i was silenced. if i mentioned it was the eye rolls would come along. >> reporter: by writing honestly about the past decade she hoped to open up a conversation about things people don't want to talk about. for medical reasons, she had a hysterectomy in her mid-40s and was devastated to learn she would never have biological childr children. >> when we have goals in life, there comes a time when you feel like, okay, this could still happen. but this idea of being a wife and a mother, that life i wanted, i knew that life i was looking for is not going to happen. >> reporter: not going to happen in the way you imagine? >> or i may never be a wife, i may never be a mother, so i had to grieve that finite disappointment. >> reporter: eventually she learned she had to accept her new reality. you talk about radical

acceptance and accept this it is your life. was that easy? was that hard? >> once i understood it. i think it's a part of grieving. i think it's a part of what takes you to the next point of becoming hopeful again. radical acceptance is just simply saying where i am right now, i didn't get what i want, but i'm going to just move forward with it. i wasn't stuck objen what didn' happen in the past and i was going to start looking forward to what gave me hope again. i can truly say now i am more hopeful now than i was before. >> reporter: what are you up to now? >> well, i'm in d.c. now. it's the first time i have ever lived next to a family member. >> reporter: she wants people to know she has a great life and no regrets and she hopes her story inspires others looking for love not to give up. are you dating? >> i am dating now. i don't know where it's going to go. and i haven't put a lot of pressure on myself. i haven't gone out and looked at

wedding things. >> reporter: no 52 weeks? >> no. i'm taking it nice and easy, and i'm just trying to enjoy this moment of where i am right now. >> nina wanted us to make it clear she is totally okay with people who are single and determined to stay single. that's just not what she wants. her advice, if you are still single, is to find a community of people like you, which is what she found ten years ago. people that were still looking for -- >> someone told me when you meet the right person and have a child it happens at the right time. it felt like my story. i met someone i loved when i was around 50 and had a baby, you know, at 52. so that, you know, there is no box for anybody. who knows what her life is going to end up being like. >> that's right. she is saying two things. while she is disappointed things didn't go exactly as she had planned, she is still hopeful.
