in just five months two fatal crashes involving the company's newest best selling 737 max, lion air flight 610 in indonesia and ethiopian airlines flight 302. in all 346 people dead. in both cases investigators say a damaged sensor that monitors the plane's pitch sent bad data to a new anti-stall system called mcas. mcas pushed the noses of both planes down to pick up speed. as the pilots struggled to pull the nose up aviation experts question why the ethiopian pilots were flying much faster than they should have, never cutting their speed. that would have made it very difficult to fly manually. the crew followed boeing procedures and turned mcas off, but then turned it back on again before crashing. >> moth accidents are caused by a chain of events. this again is the case here. we know we can break one of those chain links in these two accidents. >> reporter: boeing promises to submit a software fix to the faa

within weeks. the ceo even joining a test flight with the new upgrade. the faa has promised a thorough review before approving that upgrade and new pilot training, but that alone may not get the max in the air. with multiple investigations looking into how the plane was certified and whether other computer systems on the max now need a closer second look. this morning this plane that had been a crucial part of the southwest and american airlines fleets is likely to remain on the ground for weeks if not months, possibly into the summer travel season. >> so just keeping up with everything, tom, yesterday the ethiopians suggested that therapy lots did everything right in that emergency and now there's this question of whether or not that plane was flying so fast, too fast, and what do we know about this? >> reporter: so they did turn off that stall -- the anti-stall system called mcas but then they turned it back on again inexplicably. pilots are really concerned about how fast this ethiopian crew was flying, they were at
7:13 am
full throttle, maximum speed, i mean, they were screaming, far faster than they should have been and at that speed when you turn off the automatic cripple system you're trying to control this plane, it can be very, very challenging. so, in fact, when they're flying that fast almost impossible. so they turned that automatic trim system back on, that reactivated mcas. pilots are saying if they had just slowed down, reduced their speed, this he could have manually trimmed out the plane and they probably would have landed safely. >> that assumes that they were able to slow down and we don't know all the details of that. tom, thank you so much. >> reporter: that's true. absolutely right. we don't know if there's an automatic speed issue also. >> sounds like a lot to investigate for sure. we do have a lot more to get to this morning including an update on a healthcare for mick jagger, the rolling stones legendary front man reportedly undergoing a heart valve replacement surgery, natalie morales has the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. certainly reports of the heart problems had many fans concerned but this morning some good news
