good morning. it is 7:00 on the dot. here's a live look outside on your saturday morning. it is april 6th and we are seeing clear skies in downtown san jose. thanks so much for joining us. vianey has a look at our microclimate forecast. we were talking about how it's like warm this morning. >> yes, warm. we're still tracking a couple of showers but it's not pouring

rain so a lot of places aren't even seeing rain. look at san francisco. those clouds that you see on the skyline is the reason why we're in the 40s and 50s to start off and it's not in the 30s. it's great to wake up to not so chilly temperatures but it is a little muggy out there and here's the reason why. we still have some instability out there since the rain initially moved in yesterday. we are definitely expecting to see light showers. good news, it should taper off in time for the afternoon. so by the afternoon, here's san jose temperature. the trend will include a little cloud cover but the temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 60s. notice by 2:00, sun starts poking through. even though we're tracking a couple of showers, things get better. high pressure will warm us up and help us stay clear from the rain. i'll talk about your daytime highs coming up in about 15 minutes. >> can't wait. we'll see you in 15, thanks.

we begin with a followup to a story we brought you last night as breaking news. a bay area man is in custody in connection with a bomb scare on a local bridge. sky ranger was overhead showing this traffic back-up on the benicia bridge. southbound lanes were closed for about four hours last night after a man called 911 claiming to have a bomb and threatening to jump off the bridge. this happened around 8:00 p.m. the chp and sheriff's deputies responded and it took crisis negotiate ors about an hour to convince the man to give up himself. it was determined there was no bomb. 54-year-old rodney brinkerhoff is now in custody. a driver crashed right through this building in santa rosen. the driver was trapped in the car. crews pulled out that driver and then worked to shore up the building. a 3-year-old boy and his mother attacked by three pit

bull terriers in a back yard in vallejo. the boy suffered life-threatening injuries. we learned that the toddler's condition has been upgraded to stable. the attack happened in the back yard of this home in the 500 block of locust drive. the dogs were in the female victim's care we're told but it's unclear if they actually belonged to her. when police arrived the three pit bulls were attacking the mother and son. the mother hovering over her son during the vicious attack. >> they had to break the fence to get into the back yard. as they approached the dogs, the dog released the adult female, turned on the officer. >> police say they had to use pepper spray to scare away the dogs. the two victims were rushed to two separate trauma centers. police say they don't know why the dogs attacked. all three are in quarantine this morning. another falling concrete scare on the richmond san raf el bridge as renewing calls to replace the crumbling, the second time in two months that

concrete has fallen on the lower deck of the bridge. this happened yesterday afternoon. no one was hurt, luckily. they closed one lane while they investigat investigated, snarling traffic. state assemblyman mark levine says it's time to replace the crumbling span. >> there's a bit of crisis in confidence after the director told me it was safe and this occurred today. >> levine said he asked cal trans about the safety of the bridge after several chunks fell on the lower deck back in february, damaging one car. last week he requested funding from several state agentcies to study what a new bridge would look like and says this scare makes it more urgent. crews will be implementing a new cleanup protocol to make sure this concrete is picked up. a celebration of life for an

east bay school principal beloved by those he served, shot and killed by his wife. yesterday dozens of people came to the creative arts building at pittsburgh high school to honor paul schatzwell. the 45-year-old was shot by his wife during a domestic dispute in here home last month. he was on life support for more than a week. his family and friends say he loved education, loved his family and he loved music. >> he was very passionate about music. that's what he wanted to do his whole life. he would never stop playing music. >> he had a way of speaking to people and when he spoke to you he just made you feel like you were so special and important. >> schatzwell leaves behind 8 children and three grandchildren and was the director of the pittsburgh adult education center sglfrj center. more than 100 people turned out in san jose yesterday to honor rapper nipsey hustle.

people lit candles and paid tribute to hustle who was shot and killed outside his clothing store in los angeles last weekend. the man charged with murdering him, eric holder, has pleaded not guilty. a major development in a deadly police shooting in san jose. the district attorney announced that the four officers who shot a woman in her car on christmas will not face criminal charges. san jose police have since released body cam video and we want to warn you that it is graphic. >> if she comes out here, i'm going to shoot her. [ gunshots ] >> officers chased jennifer vasquez because they thought she was wanted for a shooting. turns out she wasn't. prosecutors say shins she was driving in a stolen car and ran away from officers and even rammed them after she was surrounded, that the police had every reason to believe she was their suspect. now, to a violent confrontation on the streets of

vianey smile. goats on the loose early friday morning when about 100 goats made a great escape in los attos hills. one mischievous goat used his horns to bust open the gate, leading his tribe on an adventure. >> a midnight roundup rendezvous with the neighbors. great way to meet the neighbors. >> sheriff's deputies helped the animal control herd the goats from a neighbor's house back to her yard. unfortunately we have to move on from the goat story which i've now learned is your dream. >> it doesn't have to be goats, just any situation where there's like a herd of animals who are safely making a run for it. >> it would be a good instagram photo. >> the weather is going to be fantastic today.

when you're driving along the hillsides you might catch some goats. san jose, look how beautiful this is. we've got cloud cover out there. but hey, at least it's not cold. that cloud cover is helping keep our temperatures, morning los in the 40s and 50s. how is is to doing? >> 50, 55 degrees. cloudy skies will remain. in dublin, 52 degrees so really kind of a mild start. how is the rain doing? well, we don't have much of it right now but we have our very own storm ranger up and scanning a couple of light showers you can see off the coast. we can expect to see a chance of that through the afternoon but trust me, those numbers look more impressive on radar than they actually are. again, what to expect, light morning showers at times mainly for the north bay. notice how a lot of that rain seems to stay off to the northern -- far northern area.

rosa. the next seven days what are we tracking? well, as i mentioned, that spotty rain will make its exit through the afternoon and by sunday high pressure begins to roll out but we'll keep some of this cloud cover around but temperatures will start warming up. monday we're going to stay dry for the first portion of the day. into monday night and tuesday we have a bit of a cold front that seems to sweep in bringing a chance of a couple of showers, not heavy downpours so not tracking measurable rain. tuesday it's going to start kicking up gusty conditions. expect a windy day. check out wednesday, thursday and friday, we start to see a little drop in those temperatures so inland areas will begin to see 70s as early as tomorrow that will linger into monday. monday night into tuesday a spotty shower chance mainly for the north bay, though not everybody's going to see it. breezy conditions tuesday and a trend of 60s and a lot of sunshine. pretty calm weather, nothing to

timmothy pitzen, the 6-year-old who vanished out of chicago 8 years ago. when rini refused to be fingerprinted the other day, agents became suspicious. then the dna results came back negative and rini fessed up. he said he saw the pitzen story on tv and wanted to get away from his own family. the feds say rini not only wasted resources, he gave hope to the pitzen family still waiting for timmothy to come home. >> the coverage that this has brought to tim, i hope somebody sees him or he sees this and goes and gets help. >> the fbi says in the past rini has made two other false claims for trayi portraying himself as a juvenile sex trafficking victim. if convicted, he could spend 8 years in prison. it's neighbors versus neighbors in san francisco where a proposal for a homeless shelter is making people pick

sides. now those against the shelter are getting death threats. several neighbors living in the rin con hill area of the city tell us they've received threatening voice mamails for donating to a page for the shelter. one woman said she got a threat for her to kill herself. she spoke with one of her reporters. >> they're trying to intimidate me so i won't show up for community meetings or say anything. >> the victims of these calls say their position is being misrepresented. they don't oppose the homeless shelter. they just don't understand the choice for waterfront location for the homeless center. now to a rare crime wave in one of the bay area's most exclusive cities. there are problems in loss ail toes. the most recent break-in at the post restaurant in downtown. the owner says she didn't notice anything happened until they checked surveillance tape and saw this man break into the

manager's office. he got away with a wallet and cash. earlier this week thieves tried to break into three jewelry stores, two on main street. two men allegedly tried to cut power to the building and gain access through the front door of the shop before they gave up. members of the u.s. coast guard are back on land after seven months at sea and brought more than 14,000 pounds of cocaine with them. it's all part of a major operation to crack down on the international drug trade. the operation took place off the coast of mexico, central and south america and involves three separate ships. one of the ships is based out of alameda. the ship seized about $190 million worth of cocaine. >> this moment is the moment that we all have been looking for. we've been training hard and long hours, all night training.

a prominent new york attorney is announcing he will plead guilty to charges in the famous college admissions scandal. the lawyer, gordon kaplan, is accused of paying a supervisor $75,000 to correct his daughter's answers on her a.c.t. exam. he said he takes full responsibility for his actions and is ashamed of his own behavior. he says his daughter didn't know anything about it. it's unclear when kaplan will enter that guilty plea. he'll be the second parent to do so. the first, peter sar theriault of memo park. his attorney says he will plead guilty. 7:37. still ahead, an emotional home opener at oracle park. fans honoring bruce bochy. we have highlights next. showers off the coast. we have a chance for spotty rain at least through the early afternoon. as far as your microclimate highs, expect temperatures to climb into the mid and upper 60s as high pressure will begin to dominate into tonight and into sunday as well. san jose, 66 degrees. up through the east bay, 67 for concord, oakland 64 degrees. along the principle, slightly breezy, temperatures in the low to mid 60s. similar conditions in san francisco. so no huge temperature spread. the conditions are going to be in the 60s all throughout. not a lot of differences in the temperatures. your hour by hour outlook, we're going to see the chance of light morning showers tapering off. by sunday afternoon we get much better clearing even from the cloud cover. aside from that, we're expecting a dry sunday. because that high pressure is going to roll in, that's going to dry us out and make our temperatures climb into the low 70s for tomorrow. expect a fairly warm afternoon

that's a question we asked after seeing hundreds of crashes like these. >> reporter: you're looking at what happens when drivers plow into parked police cars and motorcycles. a concord chp officer broke both legs, his motorcycle mangled. >> his boots were ripped up and his leg tore up. he was in bad shape. >> reporter: an officer pushed 75 feet down the freeway. and worse, officers killed during traffic stops. >> irresponsible and senseless and the chp says it didn't have to happen. >> reporter: we've learned these crashes happen every day state-wide. officer ross lee survived after a driver turned her head and her car toward him on 280 nor cooper tino. >> hit my forehead on the door

frame and ended up on the banking. it was a very scary situation and happened very fast. >> reporter: data shows more than 2700 crashes since 2013 involving a parked law enforcement vehicle. that includes highway patrol and local officers who were helping stranded drivers directing traffic or working enforcement stops on the shoulder. >> there was no room to get out safely. >> reporter: lavans crosby was on his way to work when an officer tried to stop him next to this freeway. the officers thought the car was stolen because it had paper plates. it wasn't. >> you didn't pull over here, why? >> nowhere safe. there's no room for me to pull over. i'd be blocking the intersection. >> reporter: crosby showed us the route he took, driving less than a mile to this parking lot to pull over. but he says that decision nearly cost him his life. >> as soon as i looked up, the officer had his gun pointed at me and he started yelling, telling me to keep my hands up. i was trying to keep myself under control because i didn't

want to get shot. he asked me why i didn't stop. i explained that i work in transportation and i didn't see anywhere safe to stop on the overpass. he just said [bleep]. when the cops put our lights on you [bleep] stop. >> reporter: crosby was arrested. we wanted to talk to the officer but the livermore police department declined our interview request. the officer had a change of heart. he called the district attorney and asked prosecutors not to press charges, writing, crosby honestly thought he was doing the right thing by trying to find a safe place to park. >> one of the most hazardous things we do is just being on the side of the road. >> reporter: jim ebberson is the chief of the enforcement and planning division for the chp. in 1999 he was involved in a major accident during a traffic stop. >> then i heard the brakes coming and another truck hit my truck about 80 miles per hour. back injuries, a skull fracture to the back of my head. >> reporter: but he insists his officers who conduct roughly 2 million stops a year know how to

do it safely. >> we plan where we're going to stop you. we know the freeways that we work and we plan to stop you in the safest location. >> the laws tell us never to stop on the freeway unless an officer is pulling us over. >> yes. >> what makes it safer that an officer is pulling me over? >> again, it's a planned situation so we're trying find the safest place for that. secondly, you're covered by the law that everybody is supposed to slow down and move over. >> slow down, move over. >> reporter: he's talking about the 2006 move over, slow down law requiring drivers to give officers a buffer. >> if you interview ten people on the street and ask them about the move over slow down law, they would not have a clear understanding of that. >> reporter: driving school owner randy zimmer has 20 years of experience teaching drivers how to avoid accidents. he says law or not, stopping on the shoulder is a risk i practice. >> getting off on the exit and immediately pulling over is totally reasonable. >> is it worth exploring these numbers and looking at ways to
