especially for the north bay. we'll take a closer look at storm ranger coming up in a few minutes. we have a look at the morning ride. >> it's pretty quiet. excuse me. there we go. we have south bay, clear conditions. i did notice a little bit of slowing. it could be a car pulled over to the side or false info. overall, the bay area is doing pretty good in terms of traffic. not too concerned through there. of course, this is one thing we're concerned about. that's the fog. limited visibility, which means slow it down out there. try to keep your distance. as always, don't turn on your high beams. keep on your regular headlights. thank you very much, vianey. >> father jay matthews died suddenly more than a week ago. >> ross plaiter has more.

>> reporter: mourners packed the cathedral of christ the light for a vigil honoring the life of father jay matthews, an oakland priest for decades who died suddenly at the anyone of 70. >> father jay was a leader of oakland. he loved this city. and he found a way to weave together his faith in christ and god and his belief in a great future for this city. >> he had, as you know, a great intellect. a huge heart and a beautiful soul. for if you knew him, you loved him. >> reporter: father jay was a bay area native born in berkeley, grew up in oakland. in 1974, he was the first african american ordained priest in northern california. members of his congregation told us that over the decades, not only was he their beloved pastor but like a member of their own

[ laughter ] >> roz plater, nbc morning news. new legal trouble this morning for a san jose man convicted of killing his parents in their home. he is awaiting a sentencing after being convicted of killing

his parents in 2016. according to the mercury news, he's now accused of mailing a death threat to a key witness in the case and offering a $1 million bribe to a prosecutor. the d.a.'s office is evaluating whether or not to file new charges. the chp plans to honor an officer killed in the line of duty in riverside county. sergeant died while conducting a traffic stop. the driver is suspected of dui and suspicion of murder. governor newsom is ordering flags be at half-staff. >> a crash happened less than a week after our unit first reported on the dangers connected with police stops on the side of the road. the chp does not keep track of the accidents but our investigation looked at the number of times a driver crashes into a parked car or motorcycle. we found it happens once a day on average in california. >> in the central valley, the undocumented immigrant accused of killing a police officer in stands laws county will go

before a judge today. mendoza is scheduled to appear for a mental competency hearing. he's accused of killing an officer during a traffic stop the day after christmas. sing was a new father. mendoza's case was suspended in january after his mental health came into question. this morning, a push to strip zuckerberg's name from the san francisco general hospital is gaining new support. a group of registered nurses who work at the hospital backing a new ballot measure. they're citing the -- if passed, it would take mark zuckerberg's name off the public facility. the hospital was renamed in 2015 after an over $75 million donation to the hospital's foundation by zuckerberg and his wife. the group of nurses is hoping to get the measure on the november ballot. 4:35. happening today, families in los altos are expected to gather. this is to protest what they

believe it unfair. a plan for students at one middle school. district leaders agreed to allow a charter school to move into eagan junior high on west portola avenue. that would take effect in 2023. eagan students would be moved to a new, not yet built campus on mountain view. the area has heavy traffic and is unsafe for students. the protest is scheduled for a little later this morning. we're expected to get a better idea of the state of san jose state university today and its future. president mary -- is expected to deliver the state of the university address. she's expected to release the sjsu new strategic plan. the speech is to begin at noon on campus. coming up on "today in the bay," american airlines is extending cancellations related to the grounding of the boeing 737 max.

to earnings season which kicks off on friday with results from jp morgan chase and wells fargo. on the watch list, a report on factory orders. american airlines is extending cancellations related to the grounding of the both 737 max until early june. american says it's waiting for regulators to indicate when those planes will be able to return to service. it had pulled the jets from its schedule in april. the latest announcement is aimed to reduce last-minute cancellations. american will reach out to you directly if your flight is affected. google maps is borrowing from waze to navigate your commute. users will be able to report traffic slowdowns on the android app. you can report crashes, speed cameras and checkpoints. this is expected to roll out this week. it's unclear whether this is just for android users, at least for now. marcus and laura, back to you. >> handy tips there. >> thanks, frank. coming up next on "today in the bay," another check of that forecast with carry haul.

a dog in england recovering this morning after he had surgery to remove five golf balls from his stomach. the dog's owner believes he ate them over several months while she took him on long walks on a golf course. one of the most unusual cases that she has ever seen. a doctor removed them. >> got to watch those. >> some dogs eat everything. >> today is a great day to walk your dog out anywhere. >> yes. >> i'm thinking, it will be a good day. we'll be watching out for a few showers. the fog that we are seeing across parts of the bay area this morning, check out the golden gate bridge and visibility is very low there. as you head across the bay to martinez, we will see those temperatures in the upper 50s to start out. mostly cloudy skies. then we'll be in the upper 60s. it will still be another warm day. just not as clear and sunny as

recently. as we check out our highs, we'll be in the low to mid-70s for the inland valleys. 65 in san francisco and 67 today in santa rosa. so as we get started today, as you're getting dressed, you want to make sure you're wearing something comfortable for the day. short sleeves and pants will keep you comfortable. our temperatures will be on the warm side. i am also tracking some rain. most of it will stay farther to the north. the north bay will have the highest chance of seeing some of the showers moving through. this is actually ahead of a cold front that will bring in some of that spotty rain. the rest of the bay area may see a quick moving shower. but overall, it does stay dry and mostly cloudy. gusty winds starting to pick up for tomorrow. it will be with us briefly in the middle of the week. by the end of the week, our rain chances return, especially on friday. starting in the morning into the afternoon. so that's what else i'll be watching for. notice we're all wearing blue

this morning. we're going to light it up blue for autism speaks. i'll be emceeing the walk this sunday. i'll post more details about it at kari hall weather on facebook, twitter and instagram. as we check out our seven-day forecast, temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s. chance of rain for today. maybe early tomorrow, especially in the north bay. but most of the week is pretty dry. a few more quick passing showers in the forecast friday. >> are you tracking any issues yet? >> no. the weather and traffic, it's working one and one. we're not worried about slick roads here. we're worried about a little bit of fog out there. just slow it down. overall, the south bay is doing good, the east bay great. up in the peninsula, if you're driving into the city, you don't have to worry about much with the exception of driving into the city and of course, taking the bay bridge. the toll plaza right now, already seeing slowing. look at that.

talk about early morning backup. it's only 4:47. it looks like the metering lights might just be on. your bridge drive times this morning, about eight minutes. westbound 82 towards the san mateo bridge, 13 minutes and the dumbarton bridge, about ten minutes. if you're headed out the door, you'll be okay at least on the roads. drive safe, guys. back to you. >> a lot of people probably had trouble driving back from tahoe over the weekend. highway 50 is back open this morning after an avalanche. happened near echo summit. pictures of the hillside up there. several lanes of the highway were shut down. no vehicles were trapped in the snow. luckily, no one was hurt. >> i know you've heard this warning before. i want to give you another heads up before you visit golden gate park. make sure you lock your car and take your valuables out. according to the chronicle this morning, while car break-ins are down in most every part of the city, well, in golden gate park

the rate is slightly higher. police report that 168 car break-ins so far this year or 56 a month. part of the reason for the break-ins, many believe is because adding patrols has been difficult than it has been in other parts of city. this is because park rangers oversee security there. >> 4:49 now. it is going to cost you a little bit more to fill up this morning. creeping up about $.47 since january. that's according to the lundberg survey out this morning. it's blamed on higher crude oil prices. in oakland, today's average price per gallon is $3.78. in san francisco, it's the highest of the nation at $3.86. a potential presidential candidate is opening up. south bend, indiana mayor, pete bo buttigieg was speaking at a

with a new summon feature for parking lots. elon musk tweeting out the option will be available to owners who actually brought either the autopilot or full self-driving packages. you tap a button and the tesla mobile app and your vehicle will drive to you, saving you the trouble of walking to the other end of the parking lot. that's tough for a lot of people, right? but there are new features for you and a few catches there. it only works in parking lots and not for street parking. the location must be within 150 feet of that car, which won't help much if you're at the opposite end of a giant shopping center. >> no kidding. in that case, you should walk, get some steps in. finding that tesla owners are in less better shape. >> this is true. 4:56 right now. coming up on "today in the bay," a check of the monday forecast for you. we do start out with some clouds across parts of the bay area. also patchy fog.

after that sunny weekend, we've gotten spoiled. we're going to see changes headed our way. i'm tracking some rain to the north of us on storm ranger. we can see the showers moving through approaching ukiah right now. for the most part, we'll see that rain staying in the north bay as you get rea to head out in antioch. your morning commute all dry. upper 50s as you get ready to head out the door. we'll talk more about that rain in a few minutes. vianey has a look at the commute. >> traffic is starting to build. it is monday morning and it's 5:00 a.m. right now. if you're making breakfast, it's 5:00 a.m., still have a little bit of time, unless you're rushing. all right. south bay commute looking good. east bay commute doing just fine. i had a little fender bender that popped up along 101 near great america. it looks like that cleared out quickly. in fact, i didn't see it pop up on the speed sensors. let's take a look at the north bay drive time. northbound 101 from highway 85. you're looking at 18 minutes. back to you. >> thanks, vianey.
