have been so many people just this week. and it's just wednesday, to step down. the latest, the number two official who would have taken over had she not resigned as of today. acting deputy secretary claire grady was next in line to take over homeland security. her departure, effective today, clears the way for from the president trump's pick, kevin mcaleenan. randolph alice also resigned this week. the president denies he's cleaning house. >> i never said i'm cleaning house. i don't know who came up with that. >> reporter: despite confirmation from three u.s. officials, president trump also denies wanting to bring back the controversial policy of separating migrant children from their parents at the border. >> we're not looking to do that, no. we're not looking to do that. >> we're not going to separate families. >> reporter: attorney general william barr backing him up at a budget hearing that also focused on robert mueller's russia report.

investigation is looking at. >> with so much going on, tracie, it makes you wonder what's going to happen tomorrow. thanks, tracie. 6:04. and a follow-up on the kidnapping of a southern california woman and a local driver in uganda. the people are in custody. kimberly endicott and the driver were arrested sunday. it was five days after they were ambushed at gunpoint and held for half million dollars ransom. it is unclear whether it was paid for their release. uganda officials say it is the government's policy not to pay ransoms. happening today, the golden state killer will make his first court appearance in six months. joseph james deangelo due in a sacramento courtroom for a pretrial hearing. dna evidence connects him to a string of rapes that terrorized california neighborhoods in the 70s and 80s. including some here in the bay area. there is still no timetable when the criminal trial might actually begin.

new details in a big move for san jose. the stkcity deciding to devote affordable housing funding to extremely low income residents. according to the mercury news, it will be directed to the people at highest risk of becoming homeless. in san francisco, a housing development is being blocked. city supervisors voted against the 60-unit project in an effort to try to protect nearby victoria drive's park. it would have been located near folsom streets. many neighbors were concerned it would have shadowed the northeast section of the park for about eight months of the year. 6:06. this is an interesting one for you this morning. san bruno police showing off an unusual haul. more than $1,000 worth of what they say are stolen victoria's secret items. officers recovered it after responding to a call about a man

6:08 right now. now, back to morgan hill. tom jenson has the latest on a major seismic retrofit project. thom? >> reporter: good morning. we've been watching this for a long time, haven't we? it was way back in 2007 that geologists first recognized the problem here at anderson lake and anderson dam. they determined during a major earthquake there's probably about -- probably greater than a 25% chance that the dam would give way. we are talking about the flooding two years ago in 2017 and how bad it was when coyote creek flooded. they had to release so much water. that caused significant damage to homes and flooded out a lot of cars. they sit right on two large fault lines. studies show wide areas of the land around the dam could liquefy in a quake. the flooding on coyote creek two years ago was some of the worst

in the san jose area in decades. but if the dam fails, flooding would be catastrophic, threatening lives and homes. people who live below have criticized the district for not starting construction sooner. scientists just started evaluating the site to prepare design work this spring. a final design is expected to be completed by the end of thor kwrao. but construction still will not begin until 2022. the water strict is giving people in the area a better idea of exactly where this project stands at a public meeting tonight. that meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:00. it is in the morgan hill community and cultural city. thom jensen, "today in the bay". 6:10. okay. so imagine messing up at work right in front of your boss's boss's boss. >> what the flight attendant accidentally done to the ceo of american airlines. plus, the very first

after people started posting messages praising hitler and california congressman ted liu brought it to a stand still after he played old video of one of the republican witnesses rather inartfully excusing hitler. it is likely to get more animated today. another hearing, this one in the senate, where senators will hear from conservatives who say social networks censor their messages. convin coincidentally, donald trump had a tweet deleted. it was taken down by twitter because it violated copyright. the latest fed minutes showing us what the committee thinks about the economy and the chance of interest rate hikes in the future. fed is supposed to be an independent body. and history made. this is the first time anyone

has seen a picture of a black hole. this is just a few minutes ago. you see it above the screen there. astronomers who run the event horizon radio telescope, which is actually a network of worldwide telescopes released that picture. black holes are imploded stars, we think. laura and marcus, i'm going to show you picture of the lake berryessa drain. this is sort of what a black hole looks like if we could see it for real. light, instead of water, gets sucked in. let's go back to washington. maybe now you can see what it is you're seeing. you are seeing the ring around the black hole called the event horizon, a light beam pulled into the black hole. i guarantee you no one has ever seen this before. >> very cool. >> picture is a little bit of a quote. it is an interpretation of radio telescopes. but still it's never happened before. >> there you go. >> thanks, scott. >> hey, the next time you're having a bad day at work,

workers here throughout the uc system, especially here. specifically here at ucsf in parnassas. we're told it would start at 9:00 a.m. but it is under way in front of the location here in san francisco. and this strike is around similar concerns from past strikes. this is a specific charge against the uc system when it comes to workplace retaliation. the union representing the uc workers filed an unfair labor practice charged against the uc system alleging illegal contact. the charge specifically cites unlawful interference by the uc system ranging from workplace retaliation to threats of police citation for picketing. now, in general, workers are concerned over the outsourcing of jobs and income inequality, something they feel is being salvaged by the uc system. however, the uc does see things

differently. a portion of a statement they sent us regarding today's strike. i want to pull it up for our viewers. this is just a portion of it. uc believes that the union, ufscme is nothing more than a blatant attempt to justify yet another strike. for the first time in under a year, union leaders will try, and again fail, to distract bargaining concessions from the university through economic pressure, at the continued expense of patients, students, and communities statewide. that is a portion of the statement from the uc system. i want to take you back out here live to the strike that is under way by workers with ucsf. when it comes to the impact on patients, we know the emergency department will remain open, as well as ambulatory clinics. picketing is currently under way behind me, followed by a rally at 12:00 p.m. live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay". thanks so much, pete. now to a follow-up of a measles warning in san francisco.

welcome back. it is 6:55. the top stories on "today in the bay". new details overnight in the kidnapping of a southern california woman and a local driver in uganda. police announcing eight people are in custody. kimberly endicott and her driver were rescued. five days after they were ambushed and held for half a million dollars in ransom. it is unclear whether ransom was paid for the release. it is uganda policy not to pay ransoms. the city to devote 45% of its affordable housing funding to extremely low income residents. according to the mercury news, that money headed towards people at the highest risk of becoming homeless. the income required to qualify for the assistance varies. new this morning, high honors for a southern california police officer who saved a choking baby. all of it captured on body camera video.
