kelly, good morning, what can you tell us? >> hoda, good morning to you, julian assange is appearing in central london a thumbs up before pleading not guilty. he is facing extradition to the u.s. that he conspired with analyst chelsea manning to hack into government computers and kwoun load classified documents in 2010. he was revoke his asylum. they are opening up to let police invited in. these dramatic pictures are julian assanges arrest, assange with a beard and shouting, carried out of the ecuadorian embassy and they are ousting him. he has been arrested on a u.s.

extradition request on behalf of u.s. authorities. his attorney saying in a same time, the uk courts will need to resolve what appears to be an unprecedented effort by the united states seeking to extradite a foreign journalist. >> this material is extensive material that has been gathered and handed over to the administration. >> reporter: they requested extradition in 2012 related to a rape in sweden. it has nothing to do with recent charges from the u.s. justice department which filed criminal charges against assange over the publication of classified materials. assange created wikileaks, after releasing trophies of classified united states documents and videos about the wars in afganistan and iraq, during 2016 campaign, wikileaks also released thousands of e-mails

stolen from the computer system of the democratic national committee. in the last few years, assange has lived in the ecuadorian embassy. it's no secret relations with his hosts have sours. his president saying there have been issues with his house keeping, internet use and pet cat. at one point cutting off his internet access, now forced to leave in other form of confinement. assange was originally arrested on a british warrant for skipping bail back if 2012. that's when he sought refuge in this ecuadorian embassy to avoid an assault extradition in speeding. he's denied sexual assault, calling it a ploy to get

extradited to that country and then on to the united states. equidhar says the uk gave them assurancings assange would not face torture, treatment or the death penalty. this morning, assange's lawyers are speaking out calling this unprecedented, saying he is a foreign journalist. hoda. >> kelly kobiaya, thank you for that. overnight, an arrest has been made in a suspicious string of fires in louisiana. es at hisy black churches in louisiana. nbc's gabe gutierrez is on the story for us. gabe, good morning. >> good morning. the atf joined the investigation and now the suspect in custody is reportedly the son of a sheriff's deputy. >> reporter: this morning, a suspect is finally in custody in connection with the devastating fires at three historically black churches in louisiana.

a federal prosecutor confirmed the arrests late wednesday night, saying that officials stand shoulder to shoulder with the victims in those st. landry parish of those despicable acts. >> all stations we have a church on fire. >> the first went up in flames on march 26th, the second on april 2nd, the third april 4th. >> the fires were suspicious. we do believe that crimes have occurred. we believe that the three fires obviously are not coincidental, they are related. >> reporter: prosecutors did not indicate a motive by they were labeled domestic terrorism and called them a reflection of the emboldened rhetoric and tensions spreading across the country. >> i think it has something to do with race. >> reporter: in the deep south, burning churches are seen as racial -- >> taking our building for now, our place of worship, but you haven't destroyed the church.

>> it's going to be another building. >> reporter: worshipping elsewhere and vowing to rebuild. louisiana's governor and law enforcement officials are expected to provide more details about the arrest that is scheduled news conference later this morning. hoda and savannah. >> gabe, thank you very much. now that historic storm bringing nasty winter weather to tens of millions in april, causing a lot of problems at the roads and airports and this thing is not over yet. we'll get to al in just a second, but first let's head out to morgan in minneapolis. morgan, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. the calendar may say april, but it is feeling much more like december this morning. we know that in minneapolis about 6 inches of snow fell, but across the midwest this massive spring storm brought blizzard-like conditions and in some cases an extreme fire risk. >> reporter: this morning, more than 50 million people waking up to a spring storm reeking havoc across the middle of the country. blizzard warnings covering parts

of six states, with some areas facing a simultaneous threat of thunderstorms. the mixture of snow and ice creating a travel nightmare in southern minnesota where 40 separate crashes shut down a stretch of i-35. slick roadways also causing this ups semi truck to kareen off a bridge in kansas and in colorado, a state trooper injured in a crash while responding to a call. the snow falling at 3 inches per hour in certain areas. parts of south dakota already seeing more than a foot. >> we're tired. we're fatigued. we're tired of the season just as much as everybody else and we have spring fever also. >> reporter: overnight, airport delays and cancellations totaling more than 3,000 nationwide. the frustration felt in denver where high winds kept planes grounded. >> we'll keep an eye on visibility and our operations team will make that call. >> reporter: to the south, those same winds posing another problem, dry conditions prompting the national weather

service to issue an extremely critical fire risk. its highest level. but back in the midwest, even though april fool's day is long past, many starting to believe the weather is just a cruel trick from mother nature. the spring blizzard even throwing the colorado rockies a curve ball. the team forced to postpone its game with the atlanta braves wednesday as snow covered koorz field. >> we're still waiting for official numbers to come in this morning, but some areas could see more snow over a two-day span than they've seen in my month period. hoda? >> oh my gosh, morgan in minneapolis, thanks. >> only one person to go to now. >> who is that? >> mr. roker. what do you expect today? >> well, guys, we already reports of 100 mile-per-hour winds gusts in texas and parts of colorado. some places picking up two feet of snow. here is what we're looking for today. we've got right now 16 million people that are under some sort of winter weather advisory and as far as the winds are concerned, 36 million people

affected and there's also severe weather to talk about. we've got a severe area for 9 million people in the midwest. so, a lot going on today as this system pushes to the east. we're going to see snow and wind continuing for the plains and midwest plus a line of severe storms strengthening this evening from chicago all the way down to memphis and friday, some heavier rain develops into the east coast by night fall. airport delays are going to be a real mess. minneapolis, kansas city today, chicago, st. louis for showers and wind, detroit later today. and then also as we move into friday, rain overnight for new york will cause delays, same in d.c., detroit, chicago for gusty winds, minneapolis rain and snow and speaking of snow, we're looking at anywhere from 6 to 18 inches of snow from the dakotas into central minnesota. so, and the interestingly enough, guys, minneapolis, they were supposed to have a tornado drill today. it's been cancelled because of the snow. back to you. >> all right, al. thank you so much. all right. we have craig here with the story out of washington? >> savannah, hoda, good morning.

good morning to you as well. that's right. a new fire storm has been sparked by some explosive comments from attorney general william barr during a senate hearing on wednesday. democrats firing back after barr claimed the government spied on president trump's presidential campaign. we have two reports and we start with nbc white house correspondent peter alexander. peter, good morning. >> reporter: hey, craig, good morning. democrats are taking aim at william barr, the nation's top law enforcement officer, arguing his latest comments declaring his belief without evidence that the trump campaign was spied on call into question his independence. house speaker nancy pelosi slamming barr, arguing he's acting like the attorney general not out of the united states but of donald trump. >> reporter: this morning, the attorney general under fire. >> how very, very dismaying and disappointing that the chief law enforcement officer of our country is going off the rails. >> reporter: the backlash after william barr's startling

assessment wednesday questioning whether the early days of the counterintelligence investigation into the trump campaign may have been handled improperly. >> yes. i think spying did occur. >> well, let me -- >> but the question is whether it was predicated, adequately predicating and i'm not suggesting it wasn't adequately predicated but i need to explore that. >> reporter: barr later clarified he has no proof of wrong doing but he wants to make sure there was no unauthorized surveillance. >> i have no specific evidence i would cite now. i do have questions about it. >> you just have some interest in this, you don't have any evidence? >> i have concerns about various aspects of it. >> reporter: barr's comments echo an unsubstantiated comment claim president trump has made repeatedly that his campaign was subject to illegal surveillance. >> they spied on me. they spied on our campaign. who would think that's possible? >> reporter: the president escalating his outrage on wednesday. >> this was a, an attempted coup. this was an attempted takedown of a president, and we beat

them. we beat them. >> reporter: democrats quickly blasted barr's spying assertion calling it unfounded and irresponsible. >> the word spying when you start linking spying with law enforcement or the intelligence community, that sets off red flags everywhere. >> peter, back to the mueller report a moment, still a lot of folks eagerly anticipating its release. did barr give better indication precisely what information he is planning to release? >> reporter: craig, a bit. barr told lawmakers while the mueller report he releases will include redactions he will not black out information just because it would damage the president's reputation looking to protect people in private life, not public office holders. the president hasn't seen it and doesn't even care about it. again claiming he's been totally exonerated. in fact, barr's abbreviated summary on mueller's conclusions

on objection of justice, mueller specifically did not exonerate the president. craig? >> peter alexander at the white house. thank you. also this morning, one of the first muslim women elected to congress defending herself. after making controversial comments about the 9/11 attacks. nbc's kristen welker joins us with that story. hey, kristen, good morning. >> reporter: minnesota freshman democratic congresswoman representative ilhan omar one of the country of first muslim women elected to congress has been at the center of a firestorm but now re-igniting a controversy over comments made about the september 11th terrorist attack. now, the remarks came last month when omar was speaking at an event for the council on american-islamic relations known as c.a.r.e. in los angeles. she inaccurately said the group was founded as a result of 9/11. take a listen. >> c.a.r.e. was founded after 9/11, because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil

liberties. >> reporter: now, c.a.r.e. was actually founded in 1994, well before the terrorist attacks. some conservative commentators sharply criticized omar's remarks, not because she got the date wrong, rather accusing her of downplaying the 9/11 attacks. one commentator questioning the congresswoman's loyalty to the united states. now, omar responded overnight on "the late show" with stephen colbert. >> i took an oath to uphold the constitution. i am as american as everyone else is and -- >> reporter: as i said, omar sparked backlash in the past. in fact, shortly after taking office she wassed a mon fished by democratic house speaker nancy pelosi for making comments that some felt were anti-semitic. omar apologized at the time and told colbert overnight, "when you tell me that you are pained by something, i say i will always listen and i will acknowledge your pain." . hoda? >> kristen welker, thank you. kristen, thank you. >> a lot of reaction here in new york. the cover of the new york post some people did something, here

london. you can see him there carried out of the embassy in ecuador by the metropolitan police almost unrecognizable. wanted by british police for skipping bail in 2012 while under investigation for rape in sweden but wanted here in the u.s. for one of the worst and most embarrassing leaks of government classified documents in history. a source directly familiar with the situation sells nbc news the u.s. is making plans to seek extradition of assange in connection with sealed federal charges. this morning, big developments out of special counsel robert mueller's investigation. president obama former white house counsel greg craig, attorneys for the veteran lawyer say he expects to be indicted for his work in the government of ukraine. overnirt the "wall street journal report"ed sources familiar with the matter believe greg craig will be charged with aking false statements to the

justice department unit that oversees foreign governments and he denies those charge. and parts of north carolina still shut down this morning after a massive gas explosion on wednesday. search and rescue teams are still combing through the debris looking to are more victims. at least one killed. 17 others hurt. a security camera you see there captures the blast. about 30 minutes earlier firefighters were called to the scene when someone reported the smell of gas. the leak apparently was caused by a contractor who hit a gas line while drilling. authorities immediately started evacuating the area but could not get everyone out before something sparked that explosion. now to a remarkable rescue in california. two hikers missing on a rugged mountain for nearly a week were rescued overnight. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer has the details. what happened? >> reporter: supposed to be a day-long trip hiking on california's mount baldy but a young couple got lost nearly

five days and relied on wits and experience to survive. overnight, a miracle on the mountaintop. >> thank you to all of the volunteers that were helping look for us. we were very grateful to be found tonight. >> reporter: a pair of hikers in southern california found alive after going missing for nearly five days. >> we're both perfectly fine. no serious injuries. >> reporter: eric desplinter and his girlfriend gabrielle wallace set off for a day hike in the snowy mountains of mount baldy when they ban gearing offcourse. a man who served in afghanistan is a veteran climber and says the path got too rough. >> we just lost the trail and had a little bit of a slip going to the peak ofga peak and decided we wouldn't go back up the ice and snow and tried to descend through a valley, but that valley was more treacherous than we thought. >> reporter: soaring more than

10,000 feet, mount san antonio often referred to as mount baldy is the tallest in los angeles county and considered one of the most dangerous and deadly mountains in the u.s. >> rationed our food, drank water through a life straw. kept as warm as possible. >> reporter: authorities say search teams scoured 19,000 acres of rugged terrain for days and finally discovered two sets of footprints and began following them and then alerted helicopter of coordinates. helicopters spotted the couple's camp fire. >> nothing i could give them in return that could be good enough for me to express my gratitude for them. >> reporter: this morning after a series of dangerously wrong turns led them on a day's long ordeal a pair of hikers are thankful a trail of clues led to their rescue. >> miguel, sounds like the

rescue was pretty tricky? >> reporter: certainly was, savannah. res tu teams say it took quite some time to access the situation and because of the time of day thought it was too dangerous to send in a team on foot. in the end both of the people were helicoptered out, hoisted up one by one. both happy to be safer and sound this morning. >> incredible. brave rescuers for sure. >> uh-huh. miguel, thank you. another big story we're following this morning. the weather. looking at thunderstorms down south. >> and possibility of tornados, too, as we head on into the weekend. here's what we're looking at for saturday afternoon into saturday night. 22 million people at risk. this is very unusual. third day. three days out for the national weather service to put this out. da damaging winds, hail and significant tornadoes are possible. new low developing in the south saturday coming up through texas. a flood threat increases in the southern plains and as we get into sunday morning the rain and storms move east. back side of the system, a mix of snow and rain.

this morning ecuador's president announcing on twitter that he was withdrawing assange's asylum status. he said for repeated violations for international conventions, but we now know there is, appears to be, anyway, more to it than that. just a short time ago, the metropolitan police releasing a statement saying that assange has been further arrested after his arrival here at the police station on the behalf of the united states, on an extradition warrant. assange, of course, founded wikileaks. that organization behind the massive classified document dump back in 2010. documents related to the afghanistan and iraq wars, and again releasing documents stolen from the democratic national committee in 2016. now, a source directly familiar with the situation tells nbc news the u.s. is, in fact, making plans to extra diet assange to the u.s., in connection with sealed federal

8:37 now. we are back with our ongoing series "stress less today." >> april is national stress awareness month, and the number of teens who say they're stressed out or anxious is reaching disturbing new levels. nbc senior national correspondent kate snow is here with that one. >> good morning, guys. we're all stressed out. recent survey 44%, stress levels have gone up in the past five years but teenagers are particular will vulnerable leading to anxiety, depression, obesity and a lot of other long-term health problems. >> reporter: being a teenager in new york city right now isn't easy. just ask this high school junior and these seniors. >> we're all friends we're competing with one another in a way to show that we're better thatten each other. >> very much keeping up with the joneses.

>> pressure to do everything and be the perfect person. >> everyone's simultaneously telling you, take every opportunity, do every extracurricular get all these good grades but it's okay if you can't, focus on one thing and it's like, pick a side. >> reporter: applied to 18 colleges. this girl to 30. >> 30? >> it's crazy. >> when's the last time you guys had a completely free day? no plans? >> reporter: they can't remember. >> i just feel like -- at least like, hanging out especially. like, i feel like everyone's on their phones. >> our cell phones and social media has become such a huge part of our lives. when we step away from that it's like we're almost missing something. feels like no one else is acknowledging it. like, no one is acknowledging that they're stressed out. no one is acknowledging that here to feeling emotions that they do. >> yet everybody is stressed out jrchlt yeah. everyone is having the same

experience. >> the constant exposure to information, to social evaluation in a way that is truly nonstop, 24 hours a day, can contribute to high levels of stress in young people. >> reporter: at the child study center at yale university, dr. el liebowitz is using biofeedback and brain scans to measure stress. showing kids how to manage when it becomes debilitating. >> tries to pace your breathing. >> just practicing simple exercises, breathing in and breathing out at a slow pace we're able to bring down that physical stress level and to increase their relaxation. >> reporter: they also teach parents how to be supportive of a child with anxiety but not overdo it so children learn to regulate stress on their own. >> support is the key. but they're also showing their child, i have confidence in you.

i know that you can be strong. >> reporter: what do you do to get rid of stress? >> spend time with my friends. >> talk with my mom. >> surrounding myself with people i love. >> meditation. >> hmm. what would your advice be to kids that are a little younger. >> take time to connect to the people you love. connect with your parents. connect with your friends. >> nice. one, two -- >> offered another solution. goes to lunch with friends, they all put their phones in the middle of the table, and whoever touches their phone first has to pay the bill. >> ooh. >> i like that. >> i've done that. it works. >> it does. >> nobody touching their phone. >> a sometimes feel stress is contagious and that parents are trying to do the right thing to destress their kids. >> right. yet we're overscheduling and making them stress. so a couple of tips from the experts. one, show understanding when your kids of stressed out. validate them. say i understand. i get this. also remember, though, your child can cope. you don't have to cope for them.

you can help them learn how to cope, and model, what i'm bad at, be a role model. don't be stressed out yourselves. >> right, and trite to -- when high daughter needs to deep breathe i have to do it with her and kind of get myself into that head space as well. >> when a kid, wasn't that stress because i was dumb. i mean that seriously. ignorant. lack of knowledge. there wasn't a superinformation highway. i didn't know things. i didn't know the every move my peers were making in realtime. so i was ignorant to it around me. colby, come out, play ball? the simple things. >> and the doctor talked that. we are in such information overload. our kids are getting, just stuff coming at them constantly. >> i just listened to nick. he'll say, dad, too much stuff. all right, dude. take off what you don't have to do that's important. >> thanks, kate. over to craig. >> hey! look who's here molly shannon. >> yeah. >> live from studio 1a. talk about her surprising new role.

interesting role for you, because we're expecting mary katherine gallagher, this is not it. a dramatic and serious turn you take. why were you interested in this? >> madeleine olynyk directed it and she and i met years ago in ny drama school. in drama school together. i loved working with her. she's so talented. it's a cool -- these erasures found in her work through speck troe graphic technology to find this stuff about great historical figures and realized a lot of her letters and poems were written to susan, her brother's wife, she had a long romantic relationship with 40 ye year. >> found it in her letters? imprints? >> yes. erased in letters. so many poems and letters were to susan, her brother's wife, in love with, was her partner, but she presented to the public, like a spinster recluse broken about men when it's not the

truth at all. the movie is telling the truth about this trailblazer rebel who was dying to get published but they sold her to the public as if she was just, didn't want to get published, wanted her poems burned upon death, which is an interesting message for, not a good message for women, because we can look at her story and think women who were trying to get their voices heard now, we could use her as an example -- >> reclaiming her story. >> yes. >> prepping for this kind of a role, was there somebody you said, you know what? i'm going to try to go down this lane? what did you do? >> we had an amazing, our historian, did extensive research and madeleine olynyk and martha are almost like emily dickinson scholars. let like a history class. i would ask them. they know so much about her. >> you have so many products, products, and projects. another one a mom manager? >> yes. >> is that a role that comes naturally to you? you have two teenagers i know. >> it is really fun. the character's is having a chapter two. her husband just passed away.
