- - - - here is a live look outside -- good morning. the time is 7:00 on the nose. and that is a live look at downtown san jose where we see some sun. and i think we'll see a whole bunch more today. good morning, i'm chris chmura in for kira klapper. vianey arana is here with a first look at your microclimate weather forecast. >> clear skies. that shot of downtown san jose, not a cloud in sight but we do have a little bit of a marine layer in san francisco through the golden gate bridge and you'll spot it today. and just over the mountains, this beautiful shot of woodside using the weather underground 5f

the door. but mild. san jose 49 and 50 in san francisco but your daytime highs, they're going to be nice. we have high pressure that is really starting to build. that is going to keep us dry and also going to warm us up. we'll see upper 70s on the map for today as we head out of the door, 77 degrees expected in santa rosa. 76 in san jose. up to the peninsula, upper 60s. and fur hanging out in the city, also upper 60s and only getting warmer as we head in toward the afternoon. so overall expect an above seasonable day as high pressure rolls in but i'm tracking a change in the form of showers so i'ive y the timing when that will move in in about 15 minutes. >> today is the day you want to copy and past. it is perfect. >> it really is. so i expect to see everyone's photos. share them with me online. >> thanks, vianey. he's not backing down. the president standing by his controversial idea of busing migrants from the border into sanctuary cities, including right here in the bay area.

late last night he tweeted again, quote, if the radical left democrats all of a sudden don't want the illegal migrants in their sanctuary cities, no more open arms, why should others be expected to take them into their communities. today ian cull is tracking this proposal and the reaction from our local mayors. >> reporter: the prospect of payback on sanctuary cities. president trump is considering flooding cities like san francisco with migrants detained at the border, speaking nancy pelosi dismissed the idea. >> just another notion that is unworthy of the presidency of the united states and disrespectful, the challenges that we face as a country, as a people to address who we are, a nation of migrants. >> san francisco mayor tweeting these another in a long lane of scare tactics and half-baked ideas about distracting people from real issues. san jose is not officially a sanctuary city but the mayor

said the city's arms are open to immigrants. >> we welcome any families to the city of san jose. who have endured hardships and have endeavored to make a better life for themselves and their families. >> reporter: the immigrant rights group siren is swamped with cases. if the president follows through, they need more grants to pay the bills, but they think it is possible in silicon valley. >> we're going to welcome them here at siren and we welcome anybody, regardless of where you come from or your country of origin. >> reporter: but committee member said democrats should embrace this proposal. >> i don't see why it is viewed as something negative either for the immigrants or for the city since it is a sanctuary city, we love immigrants here. so i don't see the drama. >> reporter: ian cull, nbc bay area news. >> now to another twist in the immigration battle at the southern border. the ninth circuit court of appeals in san francisco is giving thece tmake its case.

monday a federal judge ruled against president trump's asylum ban which required asylum-seekers to wait in mexico. well the judge's order overturning the ban was supposed to take effect at 5:00 last night. but the ninth circuit court intervened before 5:00 p.m. the three-judge panel wants to hear more arguments from both sides and demanded the arguments be delivered by wednesday. from the east coast to the east bay. 2020 presidential candidate eric swalwell is hitting the campaign trail. the democratic nominee hopeful was in south carolina on friday. but on sunday he's scheduled to be at dublin high school for the first bay area rally.st n 40 sw supporters came out to his high school to make signs, plan for his arrival and even facetime him. >> the best part about this is that it is not every day from your home town is a viable candidate for president of the u.s. and so we're all-in for eric. >> reporter: the fourth term east bay congressman graduated from dublin high scho in 1999

and he announced he's running for president back on tuesday. check out this video. a castro valley woman wants you to see it. she's determined to find the person she's called her guardian angel. here is what happened. she saved her from being crushed by her car, this is the walgreens parking lot in hayward. in the top left corner of the screen you'll see cassandra hunter getting out of the truck and didn't realize the car was still in reverse. and it started rolling back and the door hit her and she fell and her leg was pinned underneath. the good samaritan rushed in to help and now cassandra wants to know who it is to thank her. a teen walking down the street in concord stabbed and robbed. this morning three men are in jail on a slew of charges. it happened around 3:00 on friday afternoon at the parking garage on salvio street between willow pass road and 242. the men asked to use the 15-year-old's cell phone. well the teen gave them his phone and they walked away. well the boy asked for it back. that is when the men stabbed him, stole his shoes and took

off. and expected to be okay shortly the lengths vta will clean up into aio their bus fleet following the scabies scare. a driver was diagnosed and three other drivers think they got it too and they blame dirty buses for it. vta first announced it would clean the 12 buses the drivers came into contact with but now all 130 buses in its northern division fleet will be cleaned this weekend. it is already a tight squeeze in san francisco. but it is about to get worse in one neighborhood. the warriors new home, the chase center, isn't going to open until the fall but neighbors are already bracing for major parking issues. the arena can host 18,000 spectators. the parking lot, 950 cars. neighbors say it will be absolutely madness if the warriors and giants play on the same day. some already taking measures to avoid parking in the area. >> well, i sold my car.

warm day. possibly some sunscreen should be in your plans. welcome back to "today in the bay." 135 years, that is the sentence handed down to this dui driver responsible for a crash that killed four members of same family. fred lowe chose not to say anything at yesterday's sentencing. but he got an earful from the victim's family. we should add lowe, hadive prior dui convictions before this deadly crash. "today in the bay" jodi hernandez has more. >> he just needs to be off the streets. he doesn't deserve -- he's proven time and time again he can't follow the law. >> reporter: serial dui offender fred lowe will indeed never get a chance to get behind the wheel again. lowe, who killed four members of the same family in a 2017 hit-and-run drunk driving crash on interstate 80 was sentenced to 135 years in principle. >> when you drink and drive, and you kill somebody, at least in contra costa county, we'll

consider very carefully whether you should be charged with murder. >> reporter: he was convicted of four counts of second-degree murder for the crash that killed darrell horn and his 14-year-old son joe along with horn's brother-in-law troy biddle and his 13-year-old son baden. the family was on the way back to napa after a father-son outing. >> he's never showed any remorse whatsoever. he's never acted like somebody who took four innocent lives. >> the world will never know what joe and baden could have done and darrell and troy had a lot left to do. >> reporter: amanda horn lost her son, husband and brother and nephew in the crash. while nothing will bring loved ones back, they're relieved lowe won't get the chance to drive drunk any more. >>y justice is that we're all a little bit safer now that he's not on the roads. >> reporter: jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> there is much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, unraveling a north bay mystery.

san jose > outside. sap center in san jose. the sun is rising. sky is clear. id vianey said the temperatures o the maybe near 80 depending on where you are around the bay today. not a bad day. happy saturday. let's talk about the 800-pound hammer. it is back. well part of it. in october someone stole this giant hammer sculpture from outside of the healdsburg community center. you're looking at the six-foot tall hammer head as it was returned to the artist. on thursday a santa rosa attorney reported that part was found on the property of a client in sonoma. but the hammer's 21-foot long

redwood handle, it is still missing. so check your back yard. who stole it and why? wine country is still trying to nail that down. skateboarders in east san jose are preparing to take on city hall. the problem is with the skate park. specifically, the fence at stone gate skate park. the city installed the fence to keep them safe about a year ago. but with pointy spikes and bars, skaters say the fence makes them feel a bit incarcerated. >> it might just seem like jail. >> it was probably put up to try to protect the skateboarders. >> but it is hurting them. >> the skaters plan to collect a thousand signatures in a petition through change.org and from there they will head to the city council. the birds are banded. three baby falcons that live atop pg&e san francisco headquarters are almost ready to leave the nest. the three male falcon chicks hatched last month. yesterday researchers gave them a clean bill of health and

applied special bands so birdwatchers can track them. when they fly, that should be soon. they should learn to fly in the next few weeks. they are noted as the fastest animal on earth and they could dive at speeds of more than 200-mile-per-hour. on to the next round. this weekend a san jose dance team will once again compete in front of the country right here on nbc. the team girls call themselves jdc or junior dance company. we caught up with them at their studio while they practiced. they are back on "world of in the cut. it is the third round of the competition. the girls have been dancing together since 2014 and they tell us they have put in the hours. >> we work day and night, a bunch of rehearsals. >> so it all paid off? >> yeah. >> tune in to see for your self. here tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. on nbc. >> i saw a clip of them practicing and dancing, and they are really good. >> you have to put in the hours. >> put in the work. and it pays off. >> there is no phone-in on national television. today a good day to dance outside. work up a sweat. >> you might be. but it might be a good thing considering that we haven't been seeing warm temperatures as we'll see this weekend. so it will give you a good little sunny effect if your outside. san francisco 50 degrees. wind speeds nice and calm. look at that beautiful shot of the golden gate bridge. any of the fog this morning is starting to burn off. that marine layer clearing out to make way for this beautiful clear skies. sap center and the shark fans were out late last night. 49 in san jose. your wind speeds are calm and right now in dublin, 44 degrees. so a couple of areas with warming up to do but eventually with all of the sunshine, our daytime highs will heat up into upper 70s on today's map. so morgan hill, 78. predicted high in san jose 75.

los gatos 76. in through the east bay, similar temperatures as well. no huge difference. well, except for oakland. 71 and then notice in through concord and in through antioch, we're talking upper 70s. some spots may even climb kind of lingering with possible low 80s so we'll see how quickly we warm up with all of the high pressure out there that is building over the bay area. redwood city 72. in through san francisco, upper 60s. enjoy a combination of sun and clouds for san francisco and up to the north bay, santa rosa 76 and novato 75. as far as what is going on with the next couple of days, we're going to see a big warm-up into this weekend. and then as we head in toward monday and tuesday, believe it or not, we have a bit of a trough that will bring back the chance of some light rain. possibly more likely monday night into early tuesday morning. now not a bigsystem. it is spotty on and off, not widespread or heavy downpours but just enough to wet the pavement out there for the yerly morning commutes and then as we

head in toward wednesday and thursday, we get the return of high pressure and again with high pressure we get that happy weather and dries things out and clears out nicely and warms us up and that is where for sure we're expected to see our first 80s, at least with temperatures that we haven't seen since november 4th and 6:00th of last year. so enjoy the warm temperatures. but heading out to the cherry blossom festival today or tomorrow or in japan town in san francisco, look at how beautiful. san francisco will have more close cover, a combination of sun and clouds but the temperatures warm into the upper 60s, by 2:00, 3:00, talking 68 or 69 and stepping into the 70-degree mark by tomorrow. over the next seven days, a look at what we're tracking. we stay dry and comfortable in through tomorrow and then monday that trough moves in and it drops our daytime highs down by just a bit and it brings the return of chances of seeing a couple of scattered showers into early tuesday morning. by tuesday night you won't

generation fisherman and it is a way of life for my family. >> reporter: an unrelenting win across the docks of bodega bay but for this fisherman, it is not compared to the change of winds blowing through the community. >> the boats are tied up and bringing in crab gear. >> reporter: the commercial dungeness crab season that opens in november normally runs until the end of june but suddenly this season is coming to an earlynd >> it came on us really sudden. we weren't expecting it. >> reporter: a lawsuit filed by the environmental group center for biological diversity targeted the issue of crab gear entangling whales. as a result of settlement with state, crabbers must now end the season april 15th, learning the news only weeks ago. >> and it really hurts. it is like taking two and a half moz of your paycheck away. >> reporter: so on a day when fishermen might be out hauling in their catch, they were instead hauling in traps.

>> it is devastating to a lot of people. >> reporter: the center for biological diversity said the lawsuit is aiming at protect whiles during spring when migrations along the coast overlap with -- season. >> most indications are there is a lot of whales feeding off our coast this spring so there is a realment sflchblgt the settlement extends to the next seasons and encourages fisherman to explore ropeless cages. >> knowing they won't endanger sea turtles. >> reporter: according to noah, while encampment have dropped over to 40 each of the last two years. fisherman have made strides in reducing entanglement and feel they're being unfairly targeted. >> some of them are being hit by the international freighters. why go after them.

joining us. i'm chris chmura sitting in for cleara clapper. let's get right to the forecast because it looked nice in san jose. >> it is so beautiful and the skies are clear and just cool enough and you saw the guy riding his bike. this is a good time to do it because into the afternoon it will be maybe too warm to workout but if you do, more power to you. the golden gate bridge, it is beautiful. the marine lay ser burning off to make way for clear conditions and here is what the temperatures are as you head out of the door. 50s in san francisco. upper 40s everywhere else. and, hey, here is a good opportunity to let i know about the autism speaks walk. and if you've been tuning in all week long on "today in the bay," kari hall is sharing her journey with autism and she'll be emceeing this event. she'll host it and the weather is going to beautiful. it is at the san jose state university practice field at sock a.m. and you can say that the weather will not let you go because it is sunny and beautiful and she'll be there and again she was sharing with

immigrants or for the city since it is a sanctuary city, we love immigrants here. so i don't really see the drama. >> reporter: ian cull, nbc bay area news. now to another legal twist in the immigration fight at the southern border. monday a federal judge ruled against president trump's asylum ban which would require anyone seeking asylum in the u.s. to wait in mexico. the judge's order overturning the ban was supposed to take effect at 5:00 last night. but san francisco's ninth circuit court intervened before 5:00 p.m. thelivered by wednesday. bart knew it was dangerous but did nothing. that is the criticism from nia wilson's parents in a new lawsuit. last july she was stabbed to death at mcarthur station. over the past nine months b.a.r.t. has boosted security and put more officers on patrol. but wilson's parents say in the lawsuit, all of those steps should have been taken before

their daughter got on that train. that lawsuit comes as b.a.r.t. is looking for more ways to beef up security. among the plans being considered, adding more police officers or more unarmed ambassadors to stations. repeated surveys say b.a.r.t. riders' biggest concern is safety. >> i think with all of the reports in the news and things like that and what happened to nia wilson, i'm alert. far more alert than i was ever been. >> the board is set to vote in june. and east bay regional parks officer is recovering after being caught in a crash on 880. it triggered a big pile-up yesterday afternoon in union city. our sky ranger was overhead at northb lanes reopened. the officer's injuries listed at moderate. two teenagers are in jail and a third is on the run after a botched robbery at a santa rosa camera shop. the staff sprung into action and wrestled two of the alleged

bandits to the floor before they could make off with the the sto >> reporter: when you walk into the shutter bug camera shot in santa rosa, there is a sign out front that warns the store is under 24-hour surveillance. so when three teens strolled into the shop on thursday morning wearing backpacks that were suspiciously on backward, everything they did was caught on camera. >> one of the guys in the yellow jacket or sweatshirt came in with -- started grabbing the equipment. >> reporter: in the video you could see the teens slip behind the counter and shoving item news the backpack before being caught by one of the employees. mike is the owner of the shop. >> the staff yelled at them and said they are stealing and we ng akind of cve weari gray hoodie get tackled as he makes a dash for the door and then the one with the yellow hoodie put up quite a fight. >> i did get him struggling trying to hn, he was biting me, trying to get away. >> reporter: turns out one of

the teens was armed and a 9 millimeter handgun got shaken out. >> nelson green is under arrest and his 14-year-old alleged accomplice is also in custody. he has not been identified because he's a minor. the 13 is still on the run. when electronic store heists are common, the shutter bug staff decided to fight back. >> it is just hurting us so much more than other big stores like apple or whatever that just let them take whatever they want. >> reporter: sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. >> we've learned the name of the bay area man who died at grand canyon this month. a tourist from hong kong dried while trying to take a picture and stumbling near the sky walk. the body of another tourist was found in a wooded area south of the grand canyon village and all three deaths are under investigation. a developing story about a teenage murder suspect in

southern california. police have recaptured a 15-year-old boy who broke out of juvenile hall in orange county. this is surveillance video of the getaway. thursday night police say ike souzer got on to the roof and jumped the perimeter fence. he was found outside a mcdonald's in anaheim around 9:00 last night. >> he was not hiding. our personnel recognized him, went up and made contact with him and as i said, no use of force. just took him into custody. >> the teenager had been in juvenile hall since 2017 when he was accused of stabbing his mother to death. one of the key players in the college admissions scandal pleaded guilty yesterday. investigators say for the past even mark riddellfo students or corr answers after their test was turned in. and he was paid $10,000 per

clear the shelters segment from our friends with pets in need. mar here with jeppeto. what is his story? >> he came to us at end of the last year and just unthrifty and then he -- his disease started progressing and he got a lot of fur -- neurologic symptoms and he got an mri and that is why he has a shaved spot and they diagnosed him with lymphoma with a grave prognosis and he was only to make it a month or two and here he is four or five months later and he's doing great so we think it was an incorrect diagnosis and an autoimmune disease. >> he's a survivor. >> he's on steroids but doing great. >>what is a good home for him? >> he likes other dogs and to dig holes in the yard. and he's really suit-- he's rea
