from teeming numbers of gangsters, murderers who seek to ruin the country. he argued that the would be asylum seekers are not genuine and they threaten the well-being of our culture. his critics have another approach. they say the border crisis stems from the cruelty endured by the citizens of hon tkouduras, guat, el salvador. 60% of whom are families have come to the united states with a hope of having safer lives. so depending upon one's political values, the border crisis is about unwanted people ruining our country or desperately threatened people seeking a safe haven. >> this is a guy that voters took from the business world, the outsider, and then injected him into the swamp in washington, d.c. so a guy who is so focused on the economy, brings this business background, why focus so much attention on an

unfixable problem and lavish so much -- i don't know what the right word is -- so much on illegal immigration. >> are accept especially since the economy could be his, excuse me, trump card, congress is going really well. that's a very good question. a couple factors come to play here. first, from the day donald trump came down the escalator, right, we all remember that moment, to proclaim his candidacy for president, he focused on illegal immigration for america's wi a'. second, the president has made it not only a primary goal but a focal point for his re-election. look, forget what the calendar says, forget about this day. for this reason alone, we're in the midst of the trump re-election campaign. and that takes us to the third factor. the president believes if he doesn't put a stop to illegal immigration, he will disappoint his base and jeopardize his re-election. so it all gets wrapped up.

>> so you are saying this works with the people he needs the most. >> yeah. >> where do we go from here? >> now we're getting into uncharted territory, as we off do here. every time the president plays the immigration card, illegal immigration card, he feeds his base. no doubt about it. but the more important thing is, does he chase other people away? he stands in the low 40s, not enough to live in 2020. what we don't know is to what degree those who view the policies as harmful and unkind are so upset with the president they will just support opponents who favor more humane policies for people seeking freedom and asylum. that's why the president is playing a dangerous game. he's already expressed support for splitting up families at the border, closing down the southern border altogether, and declaring a national emergency over funding his border wall. each step would have serious repercussions constitutionally and politically, which is why all the moves may have an impact
