welcome to monday morning. it is april 15th. tax day. a live look at the bay bridge this morning. tracking a new storm that is also headed to the bay area. more on that in just a minute. good morning to you. >> taxes and the bay bridge toll plaza. >> money, money, money. >> monday and rain. just go back to bed. >> right. it's going to start out nice, though. it won't be too bad. a quick moving system moving through this afternoon. mobile doppler radar on san bruno mountain. a couple of light showers from the north. we will start to see the rain spreading across the bay area, going into the afternoon. once again, we start out dry,

especially in the south bay. we see mostly clear skies. temperatures in the 50s. heading into the upper 50s. it won't be as warm. more clouds moving in as we go throughout the day. mike, you were hearing about a traffic alert. >> a traffic break over here at the top of the screen. the south bay, all along the peninsula. here the east bay, tri-valley, everything is moving as you would expect. it is moving as you would expect in contra costa county. but we have a disabled vehicle over on the shoulder. watch out. stay to your left. over here, right and left side of the bay bridge, cash lanes. notice over here, these cash lanes we have two on the left that are not yet open. that should change over the next 29 minutes. back to you. thank you very much. we start with breaking news in the north bay. a fire tearing and a strip mall in novato. >> pete, how badly are we talking about when it comes to the damage there?

>> reporter: yeah. good morning to you, marcus and laura. well, we know that the fire is contained. that's what fire official are telling us. you can see the crews behind us in front of this building on 300 block of marin keys boulevard in novato. we want to show you new video from not too long ago. we know fire officials say it began roughly around midnight. they received 911 calls from passers-by. there were two people inside who made the 911 call and reported this fire. they were able to get out safely. as far as where the fire was, they are saying it was in the middle section of the building and the roof. that is where most of the fire was coming from. or as they term it, fully involved in that area. crews were able to put it out by 1:15 a.m. it took a little more than an hour to put out the fire.

here is the deputy chief explaining how they were able to put the fire out. >> what we is we basically put water the fire with our aerial master streams getting water on the building from above. >> reporter: take you back out here live. crews still here on the scene. we know there are 8 to 10 businesses in the structure, number of businesses that add either smoke, fire, or water damage. arson investigators are heading to the scene because the cause of the fire is still under investigation. pete suratos for "today in the bay". >> glad those who were inside are able to get out safely. 4:33. out of oakland's highland park, six children homeless after a fire ripped through their apartment building. firefighters tweeted out video overnight. it handled just before 3:00 this morning on fruit rail, south of

580. firefighters say the fire started in the third floor unit. no reports of any injuries. now, to oakland, where there is an all-out seven for a hit and run driver. >> a mother and her 6-year-old son were hit in a crosswalk some left for dead. investigators have a suspect in mind, but they're still trying to track down the driver. >> reporter: just before sunset in the parking lot of a laundromat at 26th and foothill, prayers for the victims. angel tkpgarcia and his mother e rushed to the hospital but did not survive. his 20-year-old brother was also injured. all three were thrown in different directions of the car. >> another went 20 feet away, another 10, 15 feet away from each other. >> reporter: he wasn't able to

say much to his child before he was whisked away to the hospital. he only got to tell his wife a few words before she passed away. >> be strong. be strong. she's crying. >> reporter: throughout the afternoon, neighbors gathered and took up a collection for the family. they want to help send the remains of the two back to guatemala, if possible. people in the neighborhood have been pushing for ways to slow traffic down. >> a light would be ideal. but i also heard having stop signs on more of these blocks, not just the straight shot that you see here. >> reporter: garcia is devastated. he hasn't been able to explain what happened to his two other children. >> i have two kids left. that's it. i lose half of my family. >> our thoughts are with that family. 4:35 for you right now. happening this week, jury selections continue in the ghost

ship warehouse fire trial. both sides of the case are combing through potential jurors to hear the high-profile case. last week the jury had ruled that oakland mary libby shaf will n will not have the take the stand in the case. attorneys wanted the mayor to testify because she knew about a civil grand jury report about problems with oakland's fire inspection process. schaaf's attorneys pointed out that the mayor had no direct knowledge before the fire. opening statements are scheduled for next month. a follow-up on a fight that forced a family amusement center to close over the weekend in contra costa county. it happened at the jungle in concord. during the confrontation, someone used pepper spray. as much as 30 people were affected, with symptoms from coughing to vomiting. teenagers all left before officers arrived.

this is the eighth and final season. you may be shocked to learn how much it takes to produce one episode of every show. $15 million. according to variety, the show's cbi dragons and epic battle screens aren't cheap. the season has some of the longest episodes in the show's history. the final four episodes expected to run 80 minutes each. >> wow. aren't those called movies? >> pretty much. yeah. almost as much as to produce this show. almost. >> did anyone watch it? >> no. >> i did not. i have to start watching it. >> a friend of mine posted something online. i have never seen an episode but i'm here for it at a watch party. >> but he's all dressed up. >> i don't think he was dressed up. i think he was there, like, okay. >> i don't know. you know, for the hype that it gets, it has to be good, right? >> i would imagine it is. >> i don't know.

i've got catching up to do. all right. let's start out this morning. getting out the door, we have been talking about a new round of rain. here's a look at the temperatures you will feel on this monday. 48 degrees in livermore. 53 in palo alto. 50 in san jose. martinez, our temperatures in the low 50s. now, we start out with sunshine. but the tay will not end that way. in fact, we will already start to see clouds moving in by 10:00 to 11:00. skies becoming mostly cloudy. as you get dressed and before you head out the door, expect to have a nice warm sweater and the umbrella. the rain chances going up later this evening. as we look at storm ranger right now, mostly showing we do have some partly cloudy skies, a couple of spotty showers moving through parts of the north bay. as we open this view and show you what else is happening, rain

is moving closer to the coast, farther to the north. we'll be watching out for the rain chances. let's take it into the afternoon. here we are at 1:30. the rain moving into lake and mendocino counties, northern sonoma county. and it continues to make its way across the bay area into about 3:00 to 4:00. into the east bay by 5:00 to 6:00. so this is the evening commute. pretty much all the bay area will be seeing rain. plan for that, especially if you'll be heading out and have the top down on the convertible or riding a motorcycle. we will see some of the showers moving through this evening. and then slowly winding down tonight. now, there still may be a couple lingering showers early tomorrow morning. for the most part, it will start to clear out. the system brings us a pretty good amount of rain. mostly a quarter to half inch of rain in spots. most of us staying below a half inch. can you believe there will be

more snow falling in the sierra? another six to seven inches for some of our resorts today. and going into the rest of the week, it clears out and warms up. we are looking at highs near 80 degrees by thursday. we start out with 60s. and then end the week near 80 degrees. so it is going to be a wild week ahead. like you were saying, still a few crews on the road. >> changes in the weather. over here, the crews likely winding up their road work. we are still watching for traffic on 680 approaching 240 through concord. nothing updated as far as the issues there. we're waiting for a tow truck to clear. a disabled vehicle. as far as the big picture looks over here, i will zoom in toward palo alto the southbound side, willow toward university, a sensors for a couple of minutes. crews are doing striping work overnight. we took a live camera since we have one. look, it's the northbound side which suddenly shows slowing and

the flashing lights. the willow off-ramp is also closed pause of weekend work. you do that between midnight and about now. right now use university towards the dumbarton bridge. the cars moving smoothly. back to you. new this morning, authorities are investigating a bizarre and deadly incident in southern california. >> that's where a security guard shot and killed a man who stripped off all of his clothes, then stabbed an elderly man at a fast food restaurant. the man crashed his car into the restaurant in palmdale. the stabbing victim expected to be okay. the 29-year-old attacker has not been identified. authorities are trying to figure out if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. well, now to decision 2020.

senator kamala harris is doing something she has never done. she made 15 years of her tax returns public. they had a combined adjusted gross income last year of nearly $2 million. they paid $700,000 in taxes in 2017. and thief had he paid $2.2 million of federal taxes since getting married in 2014. just a reminder, president trump refuses to make his public. south bend mayor pete buttigieg is officially throwing his hat into the race. recently buttigieg had made headlines starting with vice president mike pence. hoping to connect with the people of palo alto, teaming up against the firefighters for a good cause. >> the charity fund-raisers

>> should you worry? we invited chris chmura to share his team's expertise in dealing with the irs. good morning. we receive a steady stream of irs cases like william in oakland, alex in san jose and mike and kathleen. audits are on people's minds and their fears. we tracked down statistics and find audits do not live up to the scary hype. first, your chances are one-half of 1% are audited or examined, as the irs says. 70% are done by mail. no surprise, knock at the door, or subpoena mondays for an interview. you settle it with letters. here's the most encouraging part. it is possible the examination will result in a bigger refund. in 2017, for example, 34,000 audits ended with the irs writing a second check to the taxpayer. not the other way around. if you get a letter, don't sweat it.
