"early today" starts right now. and good morning to you. i'm richard lui. >> good to be with you. i'm frances rivera. an entire city and the world is waking up in shock after a devastating fire reduced parts of notre dame cathedral to ash. flames engulfed the spire, the catastrophic collapse crippling the gathering place that has been a symbol of freedom and fraternity in paris for over 800 years. 13 million visitors from all faiths come to marvel at the heart of the french capital. it's a devastating start to holy week for catholic church, but french president emmanuel macron is vowing to rebuild. joining us from london is sarah harmon with the very latest. sarah, good morning. >> reporter: frances rivera, good morning. what a loss for france and the world. we're talking about a just a fe

large parts of it to be destroyed. the cause of this fire isn't clear yet. the paris prosecutor's office is investigating at the moment they are treating it as an accident, and a key focus of this investigation is likely to be the scaffolding that was outside the cathedral. notre dame was undergoing a nearly $7 million renovation when this fire broke out. one firefighter was injured, but remarkably, frances, we don't have any reports of fatalities. that's pretty incredible when you consider the size of this fire, and also the location, a densely populated urban area. as you said, the french president is vowing to rebuild and this morning one of france's rich est men says he'sdote more. cathedral were made of wood. this morning a french cultural heritage expert says france doesn't even have the kind of trees that are big enough to

replace these ancient wooden i challenges that lie ahead rebuilding this iconic piece of paris. frances, richard? >> everybody reflects on their own memories of notre dame. no, not the same. sarah harmon, as always, thank you very much. >> for more we are joined by liz boater. she lives in paris, witnessed the fire from where she lives, very, very close. liz, thanks for being on the phone for us. we know what notre dame means to -- well, folks that aren't from paris. you're there in paris. what does notre dame and now unfortunately the current situation mean to locals? >> i am getting messages every minute on my phone from my friends who live here, bot ex-pats and native parisians and french people. everyone is devastated. our hearts are broken.

just constant expressions of shock and sorrow over this. it really cuts the heart out of the french people. my friend, my neighbor told me yesterday that notre dame to her is more parisian than the eiffel tower. >> it is a strong statement there. talk to us from your experience being so close, and seeing those flames from beginning to end, devour this landmark. what was that like for you? >> i was just -- i felt so helpful and so, just horrified. i was overcome with a sadness that for all of humanity, not just for myself. i really felt there was -- i was witnessing a tremendous loss to the cultural heritage of humanity. >> yeah, sayings as

you know since you live in paris, [ speaking foreign language ] which means pushed or tossed, but you don't sink. that would represent, i'm sure, what the catholic church is saying and as well parisians are saying today despite what happened to notre dame. >> i'm glad you bring up that saying. it is very much the heart of the way, but i believe the french people view catastrophes and adversity. there were people who were, last night, while the flames licked the sky, you know, the french were walking around singing hymns and just sort of like almost like sayin weagai while still destroying us. it's a beautiful way of looking at life, and that saying that flows beautifully by notre dame every day was instrumental in saving her because the

firefighters were pumping the water from the sun directly on to the roof to save her. >> liz boater, 9:30 a.m. in paris. thank you so much for sharing your stories. >> thank you. >> after 22 months of shrouded in mystery, the wait for the mueller report is almost over. the justice department is expected to release a redacted version of the special rsday mo congress and the public. nbc's tracie potts joins us now from d.c. with the latest. tracie, the question is how much of that report is going to be blacked out so we don't see it? >> reporter: we don't know, but we do know that it is supposed to be color-coded, frances, so when lawmakers get this report, they can see what's been taken out and why that information has been taken out. secret grand jury information and other pieces of this report that the attorney general says by law he cannot reveal. we now know it is coming out thursday morning. lawmakers will get their hands on it thenndsumably the public as well.

nearly 400 pages, and the president critical after the report's summary was released by the attorney general, saying that there was no collusion, but inconclusive on whether or not there was obstruction of justice. the president tweeting that this was written by 18 angry democrats who also happened to be trump haters, he said, and clinton supporters. they should have focused on the people who spied on his 2016 campaign, referring to that unfounded allegation at this point that the fbi was actually spying on the campaign without authorization. frances? >> we will all see depending on how much. tracie, thank you. >> an escalating war of words this morning between president trump and congresswoman ilhan omar over her controversial comments about 9/11, and then his response on social media. the minnesota democrat says she. and nbc's kasie hunt has more. >> reporter: dueling protests

of passage. early sunday that tradition turned tragic. 22-year-old journalism major sidney montrise fell to her death. the senior from portland, oregon fell to her death. the president writing, there are no words to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise. she was climbing up and reporte posting video on social media. police say she fell through a staircase landing and dropped 30 feet. in the school newspaper, students described their own experiences inside the tower. there was a huge spiral staircase going up, and we couldn't see the top, one said. fordham says the tower is normally locked, and it is investigating. while students mourn, one friend describing m anf ries as the sweetest soul she had ever met. stephanie gosk, nbc news, new york. >> now to new developments in the college admissions scandal. lori loughlin and her fashion designer husband pleaded not

guilty. they were charged last month with the conspiracy to commit mail fraud for allegedly paying $500,000 in bribes to get their daughters into the university of southern california. last week money laundering charges were added for the couple and 14 other defendants. they are both free on bail and waived their right to appear in court allowing defense lawyers to enter a not guilty plea on all charges. >> caught oncara, an explosive close call for a new jersey utility worker who had to run for his life after a live power line he had been working on fell to the ground, as you see right there. immediately setting off sparks and fire, the incident happened monday morning and was captured on dashcam by a police officer who was on the scene. ted greenberg from our nbc affiliate in philadelphia, wcau, reports. >> reporter: once the line came in contact with the ground, it erupted into a fire ball real quick. >> a lineman forced to run for his life to escape intense flames and sparks shooting high into the air. >> reporter: he was standing
