bridge crew took care of that on their own. you saw the traffic and sensors no problem. do be careful. weep update you coming up. back to you. >> 5:01. leaders in france this morning promising notre dame cathedral will rise from the ashes of a devastating fire. firefighters only fully extinguished it a short time ago, some 12 hours after the landmark church first started burning. a large part of the artwork and relics have been saved. still it's clear by any standards the fire heavily damaged the 800-year-old church. some say the surreal scene left them in shock. >> the roof was falling down. and later the spire started bending. there was big smoke and flames.

democrats have given the irs a new deadline, one week from today, to turn over six years of president trump's tax returns. the president's legal team says that's illegal. >> this administration has no intention to weaponize the irs. >> frankly, the people don't care. >> absolutely interested in seeing president trump's tax returns. >> reporter: while the treasury department decides whether to comply, subpoenas are going out to mr. trump's accounting firm for seven years of financial statement. and according to the "new york times", to deutsche bank, which loaned mr. trump $2 billion. >> the american people have a right to know where he's getting his money, to whom he owes money. >> reporter: thursday morning's release of the mueller report could offer new insight on the president's business. >> it could be there is significant wrongdoing. >> i don't care about the mueller report. i've been totally exonerated. >> reporter: the report found no collusion with russia but inconclusive on obstruction of justice.

bob, talk to us about what lyft is promising. >> reporter: making sure your driver, to make sure they are trustworthy, what the ride-sharing service is doing now, running continuous background checks instead of the regular annual checks. it includes a social security number trace and criminal records and sex offender registry. now they will be monitoring daily for any drivers with criminal convictions. lyft is enhancing identity identification. drivers have to carry a valid driver's license and up to date photo of their face. uber began continuous background

checks last year. there have been a number of cases in which drivers have been accused of sexual and violent crimes, just a small number. lyft, out of san francisco, ipo'd late last month. stock slid 20% in value. uber, which is also sf-based, could soon ipo as well. reporting live in walnut creek, bob redell, "today in the bay". all right. bob, thank you. 5:06. new details on the planned waterfront homeless navigation center. angry neighbors confronted mayor london breed when she tried to explain the plans two weeks ago. it will sit on an empty lot in the embarcadero. the mayor's office issued an update. it will ramp up to the number from 130 beds initially. while the original plan called for the site to operate four

years, the city now seeks to a two-year lease with the option to renew if it's successful. as promised, more police officers will patrol the area. the port commission is scheduled to vote on a deal one week from today. >> it is 5:07. jury selection begins in the ghost ship warehouse fire. last week hundreds of potential jurors answered questionnaires. derrick almena and max harris each face 36 counts of manslaught manslaughter. opening statements are scheduled to start next month. late last week a judge ordered mary schaaf will not have to take the stand in the case. san mateo county supervisors previously approved a ban but because the daly city property is opened by the state it was

considered null and void. today's vote involves the cal palace board of directors. they would have to go to a locally joint authority. that may put the gun and ammunition sales ban into effect. there is a state measure working its waylegislature. an i.t. worker won a huge lawsuit. he is manager at genentech. he accused the employee of stealing half a sandwich and falsifying time cards. the employee said it was retaliation for a race based complaint. the jury siding with the employee. the company says they appreciate the thoughtful deliberations. >> this snow is forcing yosemite to close its five high sierra

camps. the park said there's not enough time to fix the bridge, wastewater facilities, and damaged tents. all of this is due to recent winter storms. thousands of campers who won a lottery to stay there this year will be offered spots for next year. >> a worker narrowly escaping as there was a round of blaze. a severe storm caused it to fall. the worker said he was okay, didn't want medical treatment. another storm system sent a roof blowing off the pennsylvania business. look at that. surveillance captured the whole thing. as the limbs start to rip a tree out of the ground. no one was hurt. >> that is coming from the storms that caused tornados in parts of the country. >> the south, yeah. we were watching that a couple days ago. every year in spring we see crazy video like that across the country. while we get the weaker storms

happy tuesday. stock slipped monday. netflix reports profits. amazon opens its third amazon go store today in san francisco. engineers at youtube trying to figure out why their computers thought it was the 9/11. they made an association between the fire and september 11 and added factual information about 9/11. nbc news obtained hundreds of documents further showing facebook ignores users' privacy. the claims are mark zuckerberg willingly shared people's private information with favored third-party companies. now, facebook has not suffered as you might expect despite revelation after revelation that it ignores people's privacy.

they're showing solidarity for paris, france following the events there. the connections run deep. of course paris is a sister city to san francisco. grace cathedral in san francisco is a sister cathedral to the notre dame cathedral. it was inspired by the notre dame cathedral when you look at the architecture over there. we got a chance to speak to travelers just arriving from tpropbs, arriving to this news. >> it's so sad. that's unbelievable. we were just there two days ago. >> yeah. >> reporter: take you to a live look at sfo, the terminal lit up in the colors of france. there is actually a tweet from grace cathedral saying they will be praying during its service that will take place on wednesday night.

our children. >> councilman galla will use $75,000 to set up a yellow flashing traffic light at that intersection. berkeley police looking for this woman. she hit a bicyclist with her car. atkins is accused of crashing into a cyclist last month at the intersection of ashby and fulton street. the victim is recovering from serious injuries. anyone who knows where she is should call police. 5:35. happening today, a north bay school district will reconsider changing its name. it's a story that we have been covering for months now. the board of trustees at the dixie elementary school district in san rafael will vote on the issue tonight. many feel the word dixie is racist. if a change is approved, trustees will set a timeline for selecting a new name. the total confident of this name change estimated at $40,000. back in february, the school board voted against changing the name but had agreed to revisit

that issue. >> now, that april 15th in the rear-view mirror, we are getting new insight on three big bay area companies. didn't have to shell out anything to uncle sam. chevron, netflix and salesforce paid no federal income taxes for 2018. chevron and netflix received $200 million in cash rebates. companies can cash them in or apply it to future taxes. the report says the companies are not doing anything illegal, just taking advantage of business tax breaks. a potential change when voters in san jose decide on a city mayor. city leaders will vote on a proposal that would have the voters casting their ballots during the presidential elections. right now the city's mayoral race is for the governor. a controversial new tax.

living in 74 new travel trailers at bidwell canyon in oroville. the fire was the deadliest in state history, killing 85 people, destroying nearly 19,000 buildings. according to the chronicle, the new residents were selected by social workers. they will live in the trailers free of charge for a year. >> state and mexican lgbtq leaders plan to tour the border. members of the gay community looking to seek asylum in the u.s. governor newsom is suing over the president's emergency declaration to build a southern wall along the border. he is pledging $25 million in state money to help asylum seekers. >> president trump has a new challenger, a republican. >> scott mcgrew, this is the first challenger from inside the

examined how trump did or didn't pay taxes and where his "fortune" came from. and the wall street journal for revealing trump's payment to two women who claim they had affairs. bernie sanders are he leased 10 years of his taxes showing he and his wife earned $566,000 this year. much of that from his book. he paid 26% of that in taxes. last night he was on fox news where the host asked if he would be willing to pay more. after all, he is calling for people to do just that. >> 52%. would you be willing to pay 52% on the money. you can volunteer. >> you can volunteer too. we have a -- >> but you suggested that's what -- >> why don't you give. you make more money than i do. >> meanwhile, the "new york times" reports beto o'rourke and his wife may have underpaid taxes. he made a mistake on paying
