hi, everybody. good morning. nice to have you with us on a wednesday morning. we've got willie in for hoda. now we can tell you why. if you haven't heard the news, hoda has a new baby girl at home, little hope. >> i just finally closed my mouth from the surprise on the air yesterday. i was so shocked and so happy and we are so thrilled for haley and hope and hoda and joel. >> you had an audience yesterday? >> jenna and i went over after the show. i don't know if we were invited. we went in and we saw the baby. she is adorable. hoda is doing great. she is so happy and pleased. it's wonderful. we'll have more on that in a bit. we want to get to this breaking news. an urgent story. officials shutting down schools in the denver area this morning. there is an ongoing search for a woman who flew to colorado and purchased a gun ahead of the 20th anniversary of the tragedy at columbine according to federal officials. nbc's joe fryer is on the story this morning. joe, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. more than half a million students in the denver area

won't be going to school today. the call to cancel classes was made overnight hours after the fbi released more details about a woman who authorities say is extremely dangerous and poses a credible threat. this morning, communities in the denver area are on edge. authorities on the hunt asking everyone to be on the lookout for 18-year-old sol pais. >> this has become a massive manhunt. >> reporter: the fbi said overnight they consider her to be a credible threat to the community and potentially to schools, pointing to past comments and recent actions. >> she has expressed an infatuation with columbine and the events, the shooting there. >> reporter: authorities say pais was able to buy a pump-action shotgun and ammunition when she arrived in colorado monday. student safety is the top priority as more than a dozen public school districts keep their doors closed today. >> we want our schools to be a safe place for kids to learn and where they can be productive.

that's why we take this threat seriously today. >> reporter: more than 2,000 miles away, investigators were seen in a florida home where neighbors say pais lived. a man who said he is her father would not come outside but told reporters he last saw her sunday. concerns about pais led to lockouts at more than 100 schools in the denver area, including columbine high tuesday afternoon. exterior doors were locked and classes continued inside. security was increased during dismissals. a chilling reminder of the new reality the country faces days before the 20th anniversary of the mass shooting at columbine high that killed 12 students and a teacher. >> these threats have ramped up over the past couple of weeks just as we get closer to the columbine 20th anniversary. >> joe, this must have that entire community on edge. do we know anything more about this woman who police say is still on the run this morning?

>> reporter: well, authorities say that she was last seen monday in the foothills here in jefferson county. so far she has not been charged with anything, but authorities say they are working with the u.s. attorney's office to come up with the appropriate charges in this case. >> all right. joe fryer. thank you. the jussie smollett case is back in the headlines. we are now seeing texts and emails shared between chicago's top prosecutor and her staff. conversations that took place after the state's attorney recused herself from the case. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer has more. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: willie, overnight we got our first look at text messages and emails cook county prosecutors were sending about the jussie smollett case. the document dump was requested by media outlets and had to be released under open record laws, and now it's putting chicago's top prosecutor back in the spotlight. this morning, state's attorney kim foxx making headlines once again. her private thoughts on the

jussie smollett case now public. in 1,300 pages of newly released documents, including text messages and emails. just after smollett's indictment the top prosecutor in chicago, who stepped away from the case, told her deputy, so i'm recused, but when people accuse us of overcharging cases, 16 counts on a class 4 felony becomes exhibit a. police say smollett stage add hate crime and lied about it. when the charges were dropped it ignited a firestorm. >> i have been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one. >> reporter: foxx went on to call smollett a washed up celeb who lied to cops, but points out singer r. kelly, who is accused of sexual abuse in a case her officers were also handling, was charged with fewer felonies. pedophile with four victims, ten counts, she writes. then referring to smollett, just because we can charge something

doesn't mean we should. police and the mayor blasting cook county prosecutors. >> this is without a doubt a whitewash of justice. >> reporter: the attorneys caught off guard by the media storm that followed. one writing, just wish i could have anticipated the magnitude of this response and planned a bit better. in a statement, the state's attorney's office said they couldn't comment on the messages as the case is under an independent review ordered by kim foxx herself. but for top cops in the chicago area it's not enough, calling for foxx to step down earlier this month. >> miss foxx needs to resign and she should do it quickly. >> reporter: flanked by supporters, foxx has said she won't leave office. >> i appreciate the support. i will tell you that i'm not going anywhere. >> as you know, chicago police believe they have overwhelming evidence against smollett and the city of chicago recently sued jussie smollett.

where does that suit stand? >> reporter: the city did sue him for $130,000. the cost of overtime for the officers who worked his case. but it looks like he has no plans to repay that money. smollett's attorneys have said the suit is ridiculous and the actor is now being victimized again, this time by the city. >> all right. miguel almaguer. thank you very much. of course, another big story, that devastating fire at notre dame cathedral. this morning investigators are searching for the cause and we are learning more about what was saved and what was lost inside that 850-year-old church. craig is in paris for us again this morning. craig, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. france's prime minister a short time ago announcing an international architects competition to design the new spire that will sit atop the cathedral behind me. meanwhile, this morning a police source is telling nbc news that a computer glitch may have initially sent security officers to the wrong part of the

cathedral when that fire first broke out, perhaps costing some precious minutes. nonetheless, firefighters here are still being praised for their herculean efforts to save notre dame. this morning a look inside at what's left as france's president sets a timetable to rebuild it. rising from the ashes but still stunning in april sunshine. the damage only fully visible from the air. most of the roof completely gone leaving the bare ribs of the building beneath. firefighters apparently had just 30 minutes to save the towers from the blaze, battling very close to the flames to save the structure. precious statues sawed away to reduce stress on the northern corner of the building. this is how it looked before tuesday's destructive inferno. one of the most iconic and well known buildings in the world. just 24 hours ago folks from all over the world would stop and stare here and wonder in

amazement. now it's become a bit of a solemn spectacle. folks stopping, all looking up wondering how long is it going to take to rebuild notre dame. >> it will be back. >> hopefully, it will be back. >> reporter: brittany flynn from denver was visiting paris for the first time with her boyfriend nick neth. >> there was relics in notre dame. i know they were doing those renovations. but i really wanted to see, you know, things from back when jesus was alive. >> reporter: miracles as well this easter week. no loss of life. the cathedral's main structure remaining largely intact, including those icon you can stone towers and the three stained glass rose windows. also, the incredible organ all safe. and the priceless relics, including the crown of thorns and the nail and splinter of wood said to be from the cross that carried jesus, rushed to the louvre to safety.

french president emmanuel macron wants the cathedral rebuilt in five years. >> there are thousands of donations coming in. >> reporter: everyone wants to save notre dame? >> yeah. >> craig, there is, of course, a lot of speculation about what actually caused the fire. is there any better answer today? >> reporter: no. no, there is not. officials still insist it was an accident. just a terrible accident. they have interviewed about 30 people so far to try to get to the bottom. you know, there were some questions yesterday as well about the structure of the building as well. i can tell you that officials believe that it is for the most part structurally sound. there are some concerns about three holes specifically in what's left of the roof. and again, i have spent a lot of time talking to the folks on the ground, not just at notre dame, but all over paris. parisians, folks from america as

well. it is so hard to understate how much this cathedral means to the people of paris, how much this cathedral means to the people of the world. france's president macron last night in that address when he said they would rebuild in five years, no one here disbelieves that. everyone believes notre dame will be rebuilt if not in five years, sooner. >> where there is a will, there's a way. craig, thank you. a lot more to get to, including president trump weighing in on who he might face in the 2020 election. we are also hearing from several potential opponents holding rallies and town halls across the country. nbc's chief white house correspondent hallie jackson. >> yeah, a president turned pundit, you could say, is predicting the frontrunners. president trump tweeting overnight he believes it will be in his words crazy bernie

cuts except when it benefits him. the president is not just facing challenges from the democratic side, but from inside his own party now, too. former massachusetts governor bill weld is announcing he will go up against the president in the republican primary. that is a long shot. >> yeah, to say the least. hallie jackson, thanks. an update on the still grounded boeing 737 max planes. the faa now saying it will require pilots to undergo additional training before they are allowed to fly those jets again, but that could be months away, well into the busy summer travel season. nbc's tom costello covers aviation for us. he is at reagan national this morning. hi, tom, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. to underscore, the max remains grounded. the faa says that that software upgrade looks like it will be suitable. their words. but boeing still hasn't formally submitted that for approval. airlines say they have taken the

max out of their fleet well into the summer travel season. before the 737 max returns to the nation's skies the faa says it will require pilots to undergo additional computer or ipad training on the mcast anti-stall system, but they will not be required to spend time in the simulator. that mcast system is suspected in two fatal crashes that killed 346 people. sometime this month boeing is expected to submit to the faa for approval its software fix for the plane. the faa would then have to approve the fix. is there going to be a public confidence problem with passengers not willing to get on the plane? >> absolutely. it's natural. we have a pilot confidence issue. the aircraft is grounded, so we have to rebuild that. >> reporter: the faa met with airline pilots last week asking z z for feedback on the steps to approve the max for flight again. >> we have the safety level we have today because of that transparency, that open give and take with operators, pilots,

mechanics. >> reporter: without the max in their fleets, u.s. airlines are canceling flights well into the summer rush. united canceling flights through early july. southwest and american canceling more than 200 flights a day into august. american emailing customers, we can plan more reliable for the peak travel season by adjusting our schedule now. with the airlines flying fewer aircraft, you may find fewer flight options for your summer travel plans, prices could be higher, and you may have to make a connection rather than flying direct. >> good morning, ladies and gentlemen. welcome aboard. >> reporter: experts advise booking early and checking reservation in case the airline cancels or reschedules your flights. boeing has cut production of the max by 20%. now their expectations and predictions that that could actually cut into the nation's economic activity for the second quarter. wells fargo says it could knock 0.2 of a point off the gdp for the second quarter.

>> huge impact in a lot of different ways, tom. thank you. for a first check of the weather, dylan in for al. >> hey, good morning, guys. we are going to see a very active afternoon and evening through the middle of the country. looks quiet now, but as the sun heats up the ground and things become more unsettled we will see the risk of very strong storms. we could see hail, two inches or more in diameter. to put that into perspective, that's the size of an egg. that could be falling from the sky and that could create significant damage. wind gusts also up to 60 miles an hour are possible along with tornados, especially through oklahoma and texas. tomorrow it shifts along the gusty coast, alabama, mississippi into louisiana and the panhandle of florida. wind gusts in excess of 60 miles an hour and hail one inch or more in diameter. friday we will see that heavy rain and storms effect the east coast especially from virginia into north and south carolina, damaging winds, large hail and fast moving spin-up tornados are a possibility.

and he has certainly amplified that message. we're certainly looking forward to talking to micah. >> the fbi is searching this morning for what they say is an armed and dangerous woman making credible threats to commit an act of violence. the 18-year-old is said by police to be infatuated the 1999 colu columbine shooting massacre. she traveled to denver and bought a shotgun and ammunition. schools will be closed as a precaution. president vetoed a bill on tuesday that would have ended u.s. military assistant in saudi arabia's war in yemen. he said it would put american citizens and military forces in danger. the veto had been expected. in recent months congress has grown uneasy. >> thousands of migrants may have to wait months in detention

after a key ruling tuesday by attorney general william barr. some asylum seekers who have shown they have a credible fear of returning to their country will no longer be released on bond while their cases are pending. instead they will have to wait in a detention center. the ruling doesn't take effect for 9 o'days. an attorney says his organization and others are prepared to sue the trump administration over that new policy. now to the latest on a tragic story out of minnesota. a five-year-old boy still in critical condition after a man allegedly threw the boy over a railing at the mall of america. the suspect now has made his first court appearance. ron motte has the details. >> reporter: good morning. police say the suspect in this case told police he showed up at the mall of america last week looking for someone to kill. he did not go through that plan on thursday so he came back here the next day. >> this morning the man accused

of tossing a young boy over a railing at the mall of america remains behind bars, bail set at $2 million. in his first court appearance the 24-year-old was charged with attempted first degree murder. his court appointed attorney telling nbc news it's too soon to know what his defense strategy will be notice that he did not ask for a competency hearing for his client. >> i can tell you that he appeared sober, lucid, clear thinking and responded to the court's directions. >> on friday the boy was visiting the sprawling mall with his mother. >> we have a report over on the south side that someone just fell from the third floor to the first floor. >> reporter: without warning death picked him up and threw him off the third floor ball cognu and then took off running. the complaint says he admitted to police he was the one who had thrown the 5-year-old victim. he said he planned to kill an

adult because they usually stand near the balcony but he chose the victim instead. the boy plunging 40 feet to the ground. >> the child is currently in critical condition, but with the grace of god and excellent support and care, is beginning a long journey to recovery. >> he was described with massive head trauma. on a page for online donations a family revealing his condition as very little change at point but we're hoping to get some good news back from some upcoming tests. >> the family appreciates the outpouring of support across the country, reassuring them of the overall goodness of humanity. >> we're told landen loves playing soccer and hockey which is something you do here in minnesota. the family's attorney says every new day is a good day and people are praying all over the world

that this little boy has many new days. >> love and prayers his way. let's hope for the best. take a turn now, a check of the weather. dylan is in for al this morning. you've got the caribbean going on? >> moisture from the caribbean. those severe storms, they are also going to produce some downpours. we have the tropical moisture coming in from the south and whenever you have tropical moisture like that the clouds hold a lot of water and that water is going to come pouring down. that could lead to a flood threat up and down the east coast by the time we get to friday. here's what's happening today. this cold front will combine with that moisture. storms fire up late this evening through kansas, oklahoma into texas. tomorrow it will move to kentucky, tennessee and strong storms down there in mississippi and louisiana. on friday, especially later in the day we are going to see that heavier rain from new england and new york state all the way down through jacksonville,

i'm still a rookie. >> micah, when you see the image of you crawling across the finish line, do you see what we all see? >> no. not at all. the competitor in me, i'm still very very upset with my goal time. but once i realized i wasn't, that wasn't attainable, i had one goal in mind. that was to finish on my own. whatever it may be. so it was around 75 to 100 yards from the finish line, because i saw the tickers. i believe that was the finish line. it was my first time running boston, so i wasn't really familiar with the course. but my legs really stopped moving forward. so the next option is to crawl. because as marines, right from the get-go, it's instilled, adapt and overcome. and whatever, you know, whatever adversity, whatever trouble you are doing, adapt and overcome.

he is understanding a lot more. so it's pretty interesting to watch how much he is really taking to, you know, being super cautious about how much water he is using. he is adamant about brushing his teeth every single day twice a day and always making sure the water is off. now going from a family of four to a family of five, it's crazy, right? you know, it's just exciting for us to have the opportunity to share the importance of water conservation, how much we really do waste. it's really important to, with earth day coming up, to keep spreading the message and letting people know, if you are being nonchalant during the week, you can waste up to 900 cups. that's a lot of water. we have to work together. in the u.s. we are not very good as a country, and i think that's something we can all do better at. >> the toothbrushing tip is a great one. i am embarrassed to learn later in life, you don't need to run the water to wrubrush your teet >> don't leave your toothbrush
