special report. nbc expects to continue its coverage thi morning overseas, cameras capturing the moment a 6.1 earthquake struck on the eastern side of taiwan today. it happened at 1:00 p.m. local time. they were swaying back and forth in this newsroom where it was centered. the quake did cause damage extending to the capital of taipei, some 70 miles away, there are reports of broken water pipes, cracked buildings, even a landslide. the two hikers in a national park were injured. well, today is the 113th anniversary of the great san francisco earthquake. >> and like they do every year, people will gather in the city to commemorate the event. that's where we find "today in the bay" pete suratos with a crowd behind you. >> reporter: good morning. >> that crowd is gathering here

in san francisco, you can see it over my left shoulder. as you guys mentioned, it marks the 113th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake. this event will start shortly around 4:45 a.m. is what we are being told. there is plenty of importance when you talk about this location, specifically serving as a meeting point of the earthquake that took place in 1906. you will see city residents gathering for a wreath laying ceremony, that will remember the thousands of lives lost during that earthquake. the event is slated to take place in ten minutes from now. the last survivor of the earthquake passed away in 2016. by 12:00 a.m., there s be a moment of silence, that's when the earthquake took place. we will bring that to you live when it takes place. we are live for "today in the

i'm be watching those temperatures for you and, mike, you are seeing there is something else going on, on highway? >> highway 24. we had that traffic brigg because of a crash. we take a big look at the bay, the only thing is that slowdown. we are approaching 580 and 24 for west bound direction. you are slowing from highway 13, jamming up around broadway. the crash reported just past telegraph, we got word that two left lanes are opened. two right lanes are still blocked by that crash. they're waiting for a number of tow trucks. one car soundslike like this there is bad damage. no major injuries, that's the good news, traffic along the interchange, here's concord and the upper east shore freeway. they're moving towards the bridge. with folks held up right there on 24, that's holding up the cash payers over here. so not as much as a backup. even though we have one lane on either side with no cash service. they may have landed that the last few minutes, traffic starts
