biggest celebration of marijuana. it is april 20th, after all. tens of thousands of people gathered to light up on san francisco's hippy hill. the news at 4:30 starts right now. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i i'm. >> and i'm terry mcsweeney. now that recreational pot is legal, the atmosphere has changed a little bit. if you look closely, you can see that the literal atmosphere was pretty smokey at 4:20 this afternoon. what a crowd. the moment led to a thin cloud covering all those folks. nbc bay area christie smith has been inhaling the information all day, and now she joins us. >> reporter: we just heard the count down at 4:20. this is a day about cannabis. there is a haze in the air here at golden state park. i checked with recs department, and they are thing about 19,000 people came out to golden gate park today to smoke, to dance,

to enjoy themselves on 4/20. a day that brings thousands of people to hippy hill, like ray breed of oakland. >> just everybody coming together. we all got one thing in common. it's weed. >> reporter: at golden gate park where the unofficial event goes back years to celebrate cannabis and to smoke out. >> you get a better high and you get a tastier high. >> tom will helm had quite a few curious snomokers stopping by where he set up on the hill. >> they taste so good when you're on the hill. >> reporter: glass was not supposed to be allowed but people carried bongs and did their own thing. >> i think it's embracing the legalization of it and medicinal purposes. >> this year saw more porta-potties, more security, and because it's on the weekend, more people were expected.

they were warning people not to buy from random people in the park. >> last year about a dozen people ate fentanyl laced marijuana edibles and had to be revoo revived with narcan. this year all of our police have been trained with narcan. >> people were selling. many said they wanted a mellow vibe, good music and good food. >> no bad vibes or anything, so i like it. >> reporter: now, technically there isn't supposed to be smoking in the park but you can see how that's going over today. i did hear from rec and park. they tell me that there were at least four medical calls today, all of them nonlife threatening. six arrests throughout the day so far. >> that was christie smith reporting for us from san francisco. oakland police are out in full force, determined to put a

stop to side shows. live in oakland with the latest on the crack down is sergio quintana. >> reporter: this week's operations comes after the destructive side show at 42nd street and international boulevard. >> if you were, as many as a thousand people came out to watch or participate in the action. drivers careened through the streets, gunshots were fired and later a big rig truck and an ac transit bus were lit on fire. it was just the latest in a stringov of escalating side sho. officers want to send people a firm message, stop it. a large number of officers backed up by air support will be patrolling popular side shows. the oakland police department is taking the lead on this operation but they will be backed by officers from regional departments including the alameda county sheriff's department and the california highway patrol. >> reporter: now, part of this effort is to get the word out that they are going to be having

more police officers and sheriffs deputies out in the streets patrolling so agencies like the oakland police department and the alameda county sheriff's department have been taking to social media over the last couple of days putting out messages warning people that they're going to be out on patrol in force. reporting live at oakland police headquarters, i'm sergio quintana. the follow up to the case of a body discovered in the water yesterday evening. the coroner has identified the person as a 28-year-old man from dos palos. tyler cohen was reported miss last month. a friend said he was swimming when a rip current swept him to sea. the coroner confirms the body pulled out of the water is that of the missing man. the official cause of death has not been released. hard work today for a good cause. family and friends helped raise money for hit-and-run victims in oakland. 6-year-old angel garcia vasquez

and his mother were killed last saturday in a crosswalk. the boy's uncle was critically hurt. friends say this is just one small way they can help the family during a time of crisis. >> so we're really doing this to help a father kwwho also has to little ones. it's just a community effort here. we have a lot of local merchants helping out as well volunteer community members. >> the car wash ends tonight at five. president trump is spending easter weekend at his florida resort, and while he continues to claim the mueller report totally exonerated him, he's also stepping up attacks on robert mueller. as nbc's chris pollone reports, members of congress are divided about what to do next. >> reporter: during a holiday weekend of golf in florida, president trump is attacking special counsel robert mueller on twitter, calling him highly conflicted and dismissing his information as a witch hunt, embracing the report's final

conclusions, zero conclusion, and zero obstruction claims a video trump posted saturday morning. that's not quite what the 448 page says. mueller concluded despite repeated contacts between the trump campaign and russians and lies about those contacts, he could not prove a criminal conspiracy existed and while mueller exposed ten instances in which the president might have committed obstruction of justice, current justice department rules bar the prosecution of a sitting president. members of congress on both sides of the aisle are pondering their next moves. democratic senator, elizabeth warren, the first presidential candidate to call for the president to be impeached. >> we have a constitution of the united states, and it says when a president engages in this kind of activity, then it's time for impeachment. >> and some members of the president's party are breaking ranks and criticizing the trump campaign. in a statement, utah senator mitt romney said he's sickened and appalled by what's in the

report, and the president's first republican reelection opponent is going even further. >> i think the evidence was pretty darn clear in the mueller report that he was guilty of obstruction of justice but the prosecutor said we're not going to make a traditional judgment. >> reporter: house democrats have issued a subpoena to see the entire report and will call bill barr and robert mueller to answer questions in the next few weeks. a bay area woman who caused a national uproar after screaming at a man wearing a maga hat is now missing. the confrontation happened earlier this month at a starbucks in palo alto. the woman named rebecca parker manke was reported missing yesterday morning. she didn't return to her home after visiting a friend in lake county. after the incident, she lost her job at a local music store. she also received death threats. investigators believe she went off the grid to avoid anymore negative attention but they are

concerned because she did spark so much outrage. hope has run out for finding three top mountain climbers alive in the canadian rockies. david lama and hansiorg auer were climbing a peak when they failed to check in. all three elite climbers, considered the best of their generation were sponsored by north face which is based in alameda. tributes are pouring in across the world. caltrans has been warning about it for weeks. now it's only a few hours away. interstate 680 will close in both directions overnight at sheridan road. the work is set to start just after midnight, and last until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. this is video of the prep work going on this afternoon. caltrans is retrofitting the ov overpass road adding an express

lane. there will be detour signs, you may want to avoid the area and take the 880, the 580 or 238 instead. there were a few weather surprises throughout the bay area today. where i was hanging out, it was a beautiful surprise. >> lucky you. >> meteorologist rob mayeda, joining us. >> more sunshine and less wind. it's a blustery evening around the bay area. you see the wind speeds, 20 to 30 miles per hour, and the wind speeds brought by a weather system that brought light showers. that was a surprise for folks early in the day. you can see how most of the action is off to the east between low pressure heading over the sierra and high pressure building from the west. that is the cause of our windy conditions tonight and we have one more item to watch, around 11:00 tonight, the tail end of the weather system moving down the sacramento valley will pass the bay area. might see a brief shower out of that around san jose.

nbc bay area )s thom jensen is a new easter event turned out to be too popular for thousands of kids and their parents. live at mystery house in san jose where a lot more kids than expected showed up, thom. >> reporter: a lot and it's still busy late into the afternoon. the parking lot is filled and you can see people are going in. the gardens are filled according to visitors coming out. the winchester mystery house advertised this as its first and most bizarre egg hunt ever and they got a lot of takers thac. t they planted 5,000 eggs. enough to be good sized for a local crowd. families across the region showed up and lines stretched around the block. remember, this is a 6 acre property here that's just across

the street from the santana rose shopping area. even people who got on to the grounds in the first hour or so told nbc bay area, they were too late for any of their little ones to find the easter treasures. >> there was no eggs, no eggs here. we came here and there's no eggs. all these kids are leaving. all these parents are leaving. disappointed children. it's very sad today. >> unfortunately there was no eggs left, so we just did a little bit of walking around, and people watching, but so many people here, we didn't get to do what we thought we had planned. >> we'll probably have more eggs. we did 5,000 this year. my original thought was to do 13,000 eggs because that's how many, 13 was sarah winchester's favorite number, so potentially next year much more eggs. >> thom general zjensen, an ama story.

13,000 next year. 5,000 this year, they'll fix it. in the south bay, people are asked to keep an eye out for a miss woman, chen view pu, the chp issued a pill verify alert because pu suffers from a medical condition that could make her disoriented. described as 5'5", 110 pounds, black hair, brown eyes, wearing a brown jacket and blue jeans. new details tonight on the story of a van stolen from a day care. we first told you about it earlier this month. concord police released this photo right here today of the man charged with stealing the van, his name is ryan kary. the van was taken from diana dare day care. the kids were so excited to have the van back, they sent flowers and cards to the dispatcher who spotted it. that's a nice gesture. still ahead on nbc bay area news, a lot of bunnies are taken home for easter.

and welcome easter gift. but the owner of a rabbit farm a bunny might seem like a cute and welcome easter gift but the owner of a rabbit farm in canada -- a rehab it farm has a different message. the breeder says the rabbits are a lot more work than people expect. instead of selling the bunnies, she is offering families a three-day rental. it lets families decide if they want a long-term pet or maybe just return it. >> it's difficult to just impulsively buy what you think is a cute, cuddly easter bunny and realize it's too much. >> shelters know that the novelty of having a bunny wears off and sometimes quickly. renting a bunny or a chick for

that matter might be the wave of the future. >> the chick grows into a chicken. what do you do then? you don't want to say it. >> there's always a barbecue. pope francis presided over the annual easter vigil this evening in st. peter's basilica at the vatican. the pope carried a lit candle up the main aisle of the darkened basilica. others with candles followed. in his homily, the pope urged the faithful not to live for transient things like wealth success but god. francis will give a speech from the basilica balcony. rob mayeda joining us now, a live picture of the bridge, gorgeous but the trees are blowing and the water is choppy. >> and the cameras are bouncing around. if you get motion sickness, you may want to look away. gusty wind right now. at least the worst of the cool weather, the blustery weather is coming at us.

here's a perfect view. the water across the bay as the wind gusts have been up close to 35 miles per hour, 36 at emeryville, 59 chilly degrees. by the way, the numbers we are seeing right now, maybe as much as 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the high temperatures coming up in your seven-day forecast later on. san jose, 63 degrees, win thing to watch this evening in addition to the winds which will be tapering off will be the chance, one more of seeing a few showers heading our way. the most intense weather will dive down east of fairfield, in toward sacramento, but you can see the line as it clips eastern contra costa and alameda counties, around 11:00 tonight, might still have a chance of a few brief showers and as that clears, look what's behind it. mostly sunny skies setting up for easter sunday. things will be a little less windy tomorrow, and with more sunshine, a bit of a warmer finish to the weekend. warmer temperatures in the 40s. highs for the easter sunday plans.

low 70s around san jose, and should see mid-70s around morgan hill and gilroy. trivalley toward concord, pittsburgh, up to 77 degrees, with winds out of the west, northwest, at 60 miles per hour. around the peninsula, still relatively cool and windy with 60s to low 70s for highs. san francisco for now still in the 60s and for the north bay, we'll see highs ranging from the low to mid-70s. so three-day outlook. notice tahoe, temperatures by tuesday, climbing into the mid-60s. if you're going to head over to santa cruz, should see days in the 70s. mid-70s by tuesday. look at the jump in temperatures around napa. that could get your attention. tuesday in the upper 80s. a summer like ridge of high pressure, tuesday, wednesday and thursday, you get the idea, temperatures are going to be on the rise, and we'll notice the jump, i think, especially as we take a closer look at numbers from monday where we have 70s to low 80s inland. move toward tuesday and now the highs even towards san jose will

be in the mid-80s. here we go. out of the weekend, climbing into the mid-70s will feel warm. summer like, tuesday, wednesday and thursday, and we'll really watch the temperatures inland wednesday and thursday because a few spots like concord, antioch might get close to 90. i know that's hard to believe given what's happening outside but that's a summer size ridge of high pressure which will bring summer like temperatures mid-week. >> this is exciting stuff. >> now is it going to jump to a hundred? >> let's hope not. >> you're pushing him. rob, thanks, still ahead on nbc bay area news, turning a lifelong love of surfing into something greater. >> one man's story of helping others. it's a story that will make you bay area proud. were perfect.

that )s the ultimate combinatio, enticing surfers to santa cruz. the sun was out, the waves were perfect. it was the ultimate combination enticing surfers over to santa cruz. >> that was the case last weekend. along with the seasoned surfers there were some beginners as well and a special group of volunteers to help them. garvin thomas has their story in this bay area proud. >> one of those volunteers is a surfer named brian waters. brian told me as a kid he lived in 14 states in just a span of seven years. that is a tough way to find a community to fit in with. well, he eventually did find his community, and is now using it to do some good. there's an old saying about

still waters running deep. but in santa cruz this weekend, brian waters is just plain running. through his lists, mainly. >> never stop checking, trying to stay one step ahead. >> brian, you see, has volunteered for a big job, head of water safety for operation surf. >> i'm proud to be back here with our crew. >> this is the 9th year that operation surf has returned to santa cruz, bringing with them wounded active duty military and veterans. for the next five days, they'll be taught by surf instructors, challenged by the ocean, and in many ways, healed by the experience. it's something brian knows well. he moved around a lot as a kid and rarely felt part of a community until he discovered s surfing. >> from basically 15 onward was
