weekend on the streets. right now more police spending this weekend on the streets, the effort to find side shows across the bay and to pump the brakes on them. the news starts right now. good evening, thank you for joining us, i'm terry mcsweeney. >> we are on late tonight because of the hockey game. oakland police and other agencies are out in force to try and put a spot to any spontaneous side thoughs sshows spring up this weekend. >> sergio is live with more. >> reporter: terry, the oakland police department is going to be the lead agency in this

enforcement effort, but sheriff's deputies with the alameda county sheriff's department are also going to be taking part. social media video shot on sunday showed a semitruck getting looted. the damage is what's prompting this weekend's enforcement. over the last few days, the oakland police department has been posting on social media warning of this coming operation in sunday's incidents, police say the looters pulled a gun on the semi truckdriver and broke into his trailer. noel gayo has been pushing for the increased patrols. >> i'm not trying to criminalize anyone, just got to obey the law. i'm trying to grow a neighborhood, we live here, we want to make the place better. >> reporter: police say they were outnumbered on sunday. one deputy was injured when he tried to take action, but with this weekend's operation, they're hoping to have enough officers and deputies to deter

any side shows from even forming. aye talked with the alameda county sheriff's department and the california highway patrol. they are all going to have extra patrols out in the streets. the chp says they're also going to have a helicopter on standby should it be needed. reporting live in san leandro, i'm sergio quintana. where there's smoke, there's usually fire. here there's just a lot of fun with a lot of people. we're talk about san francisco's annual 4/20 celebration. thousands of people packed into hippie hill at golden gate park. this is the time the celebration has fallen on a saturday since the state legalized use. >> it's really embracing the legalization of it and also the medicinal purposes. >> last year about a dozen people ate edibles laced with

fentanyl and they had to be revived with narcan. there have been no reported issues with that today. police did make at least seven arrests, kicked out one guy who was walking around with a snake on his shoulder. this just in, this vehicle here, well, you see what's on the hoot of the car. it blew a stop sign in san mateo county. deputies pulled it over. they noticed the smell of marijuana. you got pipes, pot, paraphernalia. several teenagers busted. the point of this is don't drive impaired. a lot of people have plans this easter weekend. >> it's pretty windy out there. roy mayeda tracking those conditions. >> some of the strongest wind we're seeing around san francisco and the peninsula where we have gusts around sfo still near 40 miles per hour, sustained winds at 30. you can see the strongest gusts along the coast into san francisco. we're watching those winds and still a slight chance for a stray shower inland. we've seen more intense showers moving north of sacramento late tonight. around 11:00, the skies start to clear out of the south bay,

which will set the stage for less wind tomorrow and the start of a warmup. your easter sunday forecast looking pretty good as we see 70s making a comeback tomorrow. from there we could be seeing 80s and maybe even close to 90 in that seven-day forecast. we'll have a closer look coming up in 15 minutes. thank you. and a great resource to have on a weekend like this is our nbc bay area map. you can get a layout of the conditions and check it on the go even if you're in the middle of an easter egg hunt. we're getting a look at how strong the winds were in san francisco. this street was no match for them. came down just after noon on fillmore street. it doesn't just block the sidewalk. the tree fell on some power lines. took out the lights to three nearby buildings. no one hurt. happening tonight, a major highway project will force the closure of the interstate for the entire night. this is a map of where this project is taking place. work is expected to last into easter morning.

tom jensen is live near 680 where they will stop traffic in both directions around midnight. >> reporter: in both directions, right about 12:30 in the morning. it will last through the night, a complete eight-hour work shift until at least 8:30. they're saying maybe even 9:00 in the morning. this is what they're removing is this old overpass here at sheridan road, and the interstate here will remain completely closed, 680 in both directions. a new overpass was already installed last year. this old one has to come out, and they plan to get it all done all tonight. that means traffic is going to be crazy on the side roads where all of the vehicles will be rerouted around this project area. that includes niles canyon road, mission road and others. all of them lead to one point on the other side of this project at 680 and androtti road at the super food mart and gas station where they're opening 24/7 and expect to be very busy.

>> everybody's going to take back roads. there's no way they can go anywhere. >> reporter: i talked to the project manager earlier tonight. he said they will break up this old overpass into large pieces tonight, and use heavy equipment to move it on to a little holding area here off to the side where they've got room to then over the coming days break it up into smaller and smaller pieces and load it onto trucks and haul it out of here. now, if you are planning on heading north maybe towards sacramento or coming from the east bay heading south towards san jose, have plans into easter morning to visit relatives, whatever, caltrans chp are recommending that you use either 580, 880 or highway 238 to get around this project because those -- these other arterial roads around here probably will be backed up. we're live, thom jensen.

a small grass fire sparked in san jose this afternoon. it happened along the railroad tracks. no homes or buildings were damaged. crews are still trying to figure out what caused it. a follow-up to the case of a body discovered in the water near fort funston yesterday evening. the coroner has identified the person as a 28-year-old man from dos palos in merced county. tyler collins was reported missing last month near rockaway beach in pacifica. he was swept out to sea by a rip current while he was swimming. the coroner confirms the body is that of the missing man. the official cause of death has not been released. three of the world's top mountain climbers are believed dead in the canadian rockies. ross kelly and hansjork aure

were climbing on wednesday when they failed to check in, searchers went up after them and found evidence of a massive avalanche. all three elite climbers considered the best of their generation were sponsored by northface. tributes are pouring in from across the globe. hard work for a good cause. family and friends helped raise money for hit and run victims in oakland. angel garcia vasquez and his mother were killed in a crosswalk: the boy's uncle was critically hurt. volunteers took over the parking lot at fremont high school for the event. friends say this is one small way they can help the family during a time of crisis. >> so we're really doing this to help the father who also has two little ones. so it's just a community effort here. we have a lot of local merchants helping out as well as volunteer community members. >> police have identified but not yet arrested the suspect. a bay area woman who caused quite a national uproar after

screaming at a man wearing a maga hat is now missing. the confrontation happened earliearl this month at a coffee shop. the woman rebecca parker manke was reported missing yesterday. she never returned to her palo alto home after visiting a friend in lake county. after the maga hat incident involving the guy you saw in the other photo, manke lost her job at a local music store. she received death threats. investigators are concerned because she did spark so much outrage. expect to find road closures in downtown san francisco starting tomorrow night. fremont street between howard and mission will be closed while crews take down a support system at the sales force transit center. the system was put up last september after cracks were found in the new building's steel beams. the stretch of fremont street will close from 9:00 at night to

5:00 in the morning for about a month. a new easter event in the south bay turned out to be really popular for thousands of kids and their parents. the winchester mystery house z advertised this event as its first and most bizarre egg hunt ever. they planted a thousand eggs. believe it or not, it wasn't enough. >> unfortunately there was no eggs leftd, so we just did a little bit of walking around and people watching. so many people here, we didn't really get to do what we thought we had planned. >> we'll probably have more eggs, 5,000 this year. my original thought was to do 13,000 eggs because 13 was sarah winchester's favorite number so potentially next year much more eggs. >> they'll definitely be better prepared next year. many parents did tell us they were quite pleased with the event despite the shortage of the eggs. now a follow-up to that baby elephant seal beached at aquatic

during a riot in londonderry. police released video showing mckey and the crowd followed by footage of the suspected shooter. officers arrested two teenagers in connection with mckey's death. she was just 29 years old. now to a developing story out of mexico's gulf coast. police are searching for the gunman who opened fire at a family gathering killing 13 people. video captured the emotional aftermath of the brutal slaying. this happened at a bar in veracruz last night. the unidentified shooters opened fire. after searching for a man at the bar, they killed seven men, five women and a child. four other people were hurt. the motive is unclear, but the area does have a history of gang violence and political corruption. new video out of the carolinas tonight. the tornados and the heavy rain have cleared out, but now we're getting our first look at this type of damage. this is from above, a rural part of raleigh, north carolina. the storm brought down trees onto homes, tore the roofs off

of buildings. tornados were reported in at least six counties across the state. the good news is nobody was hurt. new tonight, tesla is planning to make more cuts, but this time at the top. four of its 11 board of directors, the fremont company made the announcement in regulatory findings last night. tesla wants to stress this. the four directors not leaving over a disagreement. the carmaker says a leaner board will help it act more efficiently. the company has cut 3,000 positions to make that happen. the directors will officially leave the company at its next shareholder's meeting june 11th, now for a new twist in the robert kraft tape. there are reports that the new england patriot's owner inside the massage parlor is being offered to the highest bidder. tammy lightener has more. >> it didn't take long, just one day after a florida judge blocked prosecutors from

releasing surveillance video allegedly showing patriot's owner robert kraft inside a jum ter s jupiter spa. according to the blast, someone offered to sell portions of the video taken of the billionaire from orchids of asia day spa, and this report had lawyers rushing back to court for an emergency junction. the blast reporter and founding mike walters tells nbc news the video appears to show kraft undressed laying on a table with his hands behind his head. the video appears to have been shot from overhead, and they were shown only a portion of it. he would not say who approached them or the price. after doing our due diligence, we felt inclined not to go any further. kraft was charged with two counts of soliciting prostitution stemming from incidents at the spa january 19th and 20th. he's tis pdisputed the charges, attorneys arguing in court last week that releasing the video

will compromise his right to a fair trial. >> why would anyone need to see that kind of material unless maybe you're a juror and you're at trial. >> nbc news is one of a handful of media outlets suing to obtain access to the video. lawyers for the owners of the spa filed an emergency motion thursday after this alleged leak citing the article in "the blast" and one in the new york daily news. the court record accuses one or more people attempting to sell to the highest bidder pointing the finger directly at two government agencies. either the state or the jupiter police department have violated court order. the jupiter police department responding we have not released any video evidence in this investigation, and we did not believe that anyone in the police department or state's attorney's office would compromise the investigation by leaking evidence. the state's attorney's office saying it will respond in court. pope francis presided over the annual easter vigil this evening in st. peter's basilica

at the vatican. the pope carried a lit candle up the main aisle of the basilica. others with candles followed. in his homily the pope urged the faithful to live not for transient things like wealth and success, but for god. tomorrow morning the pope will give a speech from the basilica balcony. it is a good time to take in a national park, and you can't beat the price. national park week kicked off with free admission today. it's one of only five days in 2019 that all park service sites that charge a fee offer free admission to everyone. there are more than 400 parks throughout the nation. you have between now and april 28th to take advantage. this is going on all week. >> you should head out there soon. the weather is absolutely gorgeous. >> behind us we have a gorgeous sunset. >> if you're inside, there's a lot of wind out there too. still breezy and chilly around the bay area right now, but today obviously the coolest day

we'll see in the next seven as we transition from almost like winter like weather this morning, real blustery and cloudy. you see right there at the bottom of the screen, don't be distracted, summer coming towards the middle part of the week. right now in san francisco, clear skies. look at the wind speeds, still near 30 miles per hour, gusts still closer to 40 around sfo into the tri valley, a cool 52 degrees. winds 10 to 15 miles per hour. san jose in the 50s currently. high of only 65 today. keep in mind, we'll be at least 20 degrees warmer than that by the time broach tuesday and wednesday. one more aspect of winter like weather to deal with. it's this line of shower that has been off to the north. that line has weakened considerably. some of the futurecast models bring us just one more chance of a few sprinkles there. mainly east of san jose by midnight. setting the stage for a chilly start to easter morning.

a pleasantly warmer afternoon tomorrow. we'll see 40s to low 50s in the morning, high temperatures tomorrow making a return to the 70s, low 70s closer to san jose should see mid-70s south of morgan hill, tri valley also in the mid-70s, close to 70 in oakland. 77 degrees up around pittsburgh tomorrow. you can see around the peninsula winds still coming in off the ocean. that's going to keep temperatures in the 60s to low 70s, including san francisco in the 60s and for the north bay we'll see highs in the mid to upper 70s for your easter sunday. here's the reason why. monday, tuesday, and wednesday you see that ridge of high pressure builds up and over northern california. this is going to lead to warming as we give you a sneak preview of that warming on monday. notice how the temperatures have a chance of hitting the 80s. by monday afternoon now, check out what happens on tuesday. warmer start to the day, and some of the weather models showing that we could see mid-80s in the forecast by tuesday and that is not the warmest day of the week. that's likely wednesday for san

been many more, each one felt in columbine. >> and i can see it in their eyes. i know exactly how they're feeling, and that just opens it all up again. >> it's just unfathom able that columbine wasn't enough. >> the attack prompted a debate over gun violence and school safety and shined a light on trauma. it is columbine survivors who created a support network for all mass shooting survivors, the rebels project, named after the school's mascot. >> a hug from a survivor is totally different than a hug from somebody trying to console you. when you're hugging the other person, you feel the strength, the hurt. >> reporter: 20 years later, the hurt and strength are visible again. still to come, caught on m came camera, police hope these pictures can lead to several arrests. we'll tell you more about it.

>> a major highway project in the east bay will force the closure after an interstate for the entire night. work gets underway in about two hours from right now. nbc bay area's thom jensen continues our coverage of the work being done. >> reporter: good evening, you guys. this is a huge project. you may remember last year we were talking about stoppages here on 680 when they were putting in this brand new overpass. well, now after it's in with the new, it's out with the old. that old overpass right here, the pavement's already been taken off. they're going to start really ripping this apart tonight, and they need to shut down the interstate completely in both directions. that shutdown will actually start at about 12:30 in the morning. workers are coming here right now starting to get set up. they'll get this heavy equipment, rip apart, and then over the coming days they'll tear it into smaller pieces and load it up on trucks and get it out of here. what that means for drivers is

overnight this will be closed until maybe nine in the morning. chp and caltrans are recommending people use 580 and 880 and highway 238 to get around this project. otherwise you could really be backed up on the interstate here on these side roads getting around it. t thom jensen. oakland police are out in full force determined to stop violent side shows. the move comes after last sunday's destructive side show on 42nd avenue and international boulevard. about a thousand people came out to watch or participate in the action. drivers careened through the streets, gunshots were fired, and then later a big rig truck and an ac transit bus were lit on fire. the oakland police department will be backed by the alameda county sheriff's office and chp. a cloud of smoke blew over hippie hill as thousands packed

black hair and brown eyes. she was wearing a brown jacket and blue jeans. new tonight, solano county deputies are asking for your help. two weeks ago thieves broke into a worker's truck parked in rio vista. . police say the bandits made off with several items including credit cards. draining the workers accounts and thieves were caught on camera driving a white two-door cadill cadillac. new details tonight on the story of a van stolen from a day care. we first told you about this earlier this month. concord police released this photo right here today of the man they say they charged with stealing the van. his name is ryan kerry. police say the van was taken from diana dare day care last week. here's surveillance video of the crime in action. then on tuesday, a dispatcher spotted the van driving and called police. the kids were so excited to have the van back that they sent flowers and cards. the dispatcher was spotted it.

massive fire in peru. it sparked last night in a warehosue in lima, and it spread to several buildings new video tonight of a massive fire in peru. it sparked last night in a warehouse in lima, and it spread to several buildings nearby. the warehouse burned to the ground. not only were a lot of firefighters there, hundreds of police officers were called out to keep people back. no word on the cause tonight. at a hospital in kansas right now a zoo keeper is recovering after getting mauled by a tiger in front of witnesses at the topeka zoo. nbc's molly hunter has more. >> tonight a sumatran tiger at the topeka zoo has been locked up after attacking a zoo keeper. >> she's currently being treated at a local hospital. >> around 9:15 this morning the zoo was crowded with families. >> this morning our male tiger injured one of our keepers. they were in the same space. >> in less than ten minutes the

zoo was evacuated and emergency responders rushed in. the keeper was alert and awake when she was taken to the hospital. now she's in stable condition. >> lacerations and punctures to the back of the head, neck, he essentially tackled our keeper. >> reporter: the zoo was closed for about 40 minutesment this live stream shows the tigers in their holding cages. 7-year-old sanjev won't be put down. >> sumatran tigers are critically rare. he did what a wild tiger does. >> nothing like this has happened here before, but back in december at a wildlife preserve in north carolina, a lion killed a 22-year-old intern. alexandra black was cleaning the area when the lion escaped its cage attacking her and later authorities killed the lion. officials in topeka say they're still investigating why the attack happened. molly hunter nbc news. it is a packed weekend, passover good friday, and

temperatures. if you have lake tahoe plans, sunday still looks fairly cool. look at that, 60s in the sierra by tuesday. santa cruz comfortably in the 70s over the next few days. it might trend warmer than what you're seeing there for tuesday: notice napa how we go from upper 60s today, 70s tomorrow, and getting ever so close to 90 by tuesday, and here's the reason why. really a summer type ridge of high pressure building over northern california, sticking around for a while, so one other thing we might want to watch if the winds are light, maybe our first spare the air days for summer type air pollution. this happens when you get high pressure to last for two to three days and the winds go light like we might see. that's going to lead to some warming and maybe air quality issues midweek and obviously strong high pressure. seven-day skrooutlook doesn't l like it has any rain. big changes now in your seven-day forecast. easter sunday right in the middle of the transition to things getting a little too warm
