the reality is there is little research to prove its benefits. what we found when it comes to parents who believe it helps their children with autism, what they see with their own eyes is what matters most. >> reporter: cbd is all the rage. the compound extracted from cannabis doesn't get you high like thc, but those who take it say it does a whole lot more. like lower stress, reduce inflammation, help you sleep. some even claim it cures cancer. but there is virtually no research to back up the claims. >> hudson. >> reporter: for mom alison rogers that doesn't matter. she says cbd is a breakthrough for her sunday hudson, who has autism. >> it's gotten him closer to a quality of life than most of us get to take for granted. >> reporter: for years the mom of five from texas struggled to find a treatment for his behavioral issues like wandering. a common symptom of autism. >> you talk about your kids being a piece of your heart

8:41 am
some states have even legalized cbd as a qualifying treatment for autism. but local laws in five states heavily regulate the compound making it illegal for most uses. texas, where rogers lives, is one of them. and treating hudson can cost her up to $400 a week. not covered by insurance. despite the multiple obstacles, rogers is not willing to wait for the law or the science. >> fun? >> i had such a dismal outlook. whatever long-term effects are, i'm seeing so much benefit from it at this time. it doesn't enter my mind. it really doesn't. >> rogers is now working with hundreds of moms across the country to raise awareness and change state regulations. texas removed hemp as a schedule one drug earlier this month, but

gets you high. you don't want that with the cbd. how can you tell? >> it sis a totally separate compound. it depends on the plant it's extracted from. you can get cbd from hemp and marijuana. if you extract it from marijuana, you could potentially have thc in it. right now there is very little regulation. there are trusted sources that do the right thing. inevitably, that cbd will be more expensive than the stuff that's not regulated. that's where things get a little dicey. >> thank you. keep us posted on this research. by the way, we have a lot more on cbd, including a really rare look at how it's actually made. that's on our website today.com. we will send it over to dylan. just ahead, what beauty products for hair, skin and nails? want top honors from good housekeeping? we are about to find out. first, this is "today" on nbc.
