our temperatures heat up. and we're talking about 90s in our inland areas. let's get you out the door with a live look at san jose. and our temperatures will start out with low 60s and then quickly warm up by lunchtime. 82 degrees eventually reaching into the upper 80s and low 90s for inland areas. we will talk about this day and where we may set records. mike, you're getting us out the door with a couple of slow spots. >> that's right. they are recovering now. the big slow spot is here at the dublin interchange. it is creating other slow spots like folks feeding toward hayward. the earlier crash has cleared. we had 15, 20 minutes of recovery time. quickly seeing speeds toward the 50 range. that is the good news. dublin and the approach for west 580, clear of the earlier crash. more folks feeding towards stoneridge. highway 84, light volume.

more folks heading towards the area approaching san mateo bridge. but no surprises here. back to you. thanks, mike. breaking news to tell you about this morning. sunnyvale officers are working hard to find a motive after they say a driver plowed into a group of people. and it may have been on purpose. >> that's the part that's really hard to believe. bob redell is live at the scene. bob, you have been telling us all morning some of the roadways are still closed as the investigation continues. >> kris and marcus, the sun sunnyvale department of public safety believes this was an intentional act, the plowing down of eight people at the el camino real and sunnyvale avenue. some of the lanes are still shut down. we are waiting for the sun to come out to get a look at the scene. this happened 6:40 last night. according to witnesses, the driver of a black sedan did not try to swerve. no indication he tried to brake.

as a matter of fact, he actually accelerated when he came to this intersection and hit those eight people. two of the people were on bicycles. the other on foot. some were in the crosswalk, others on the sidewalk waiting to cross. all eight taken to the hospital. the youngest 13 years old. he hit a tree. he was taken into custody. he is being questioned by police. trying to figure out why he did that. that is one of the big question marks. they have not identified who this person is. they will have a press conference later today. hopefully they will update us on some of the details. the intersection is open to traffic.

"today in the bay"'s pete suratos is live in walnut creek. 4:15 for regular gas. that is out of control. >> reporter: yeah. that's right, marcus. you just showed the map. we are standing in one of the red areas in walnut creek behind me. as you mentioned, 4:15 a gallon. the average is just above $4. governor tkpaf innew some is trying to get to the bottom of this and wants answers. he is calling on the energy commission to figure out why gas prices are so high in california. some say it is higher taxes, tougher regulations and trouble at refineries. a study by the petroleum market advisory disputes the notion saying it didn't account for the price difference. according to gasbuddy.com, the average price is $4.303, a $1 more than the national average.

immigration in america. >> the trump administration's push to keep asylum seekers in mexico will get a hearing before the ninth circuit in san francisco. tracie pots is live with what's happening and what it means for immigrant families who feel like they are in so much limbo, tracie. >> reporter: exactly. and they are they are. the ninth circuit that president trump talks about so often and dislikes is going to hear this case about whether or not the administration can force these families seeking asylum to stay in mexico while they're waiting for their cases to be heard before a judge. typically in the united states, they're allowed to stay in the u.s., they get a court date, they come and make their case before a judge. but the trump administration, for a number of reasons, wants to send them back over the border to wait, saying there is a crisis, that immigration resources are overwhelmed at the border. so starting back in january, they started this idea of dealing with the backlog of 800,000 cases by making people wait on the other side of the

border. a district judge disagreed with that. and now the appeals court today is going to take a look at that. the lower court put a temporary halt on it. so it is not in place yet. it came at a time when the president was also trying to send some of the migrants to sanctuary cities like san francisco. the new development today is this appeals court that has so much back and forth with the trump administration taking a close look at whether it's constitutional to force folks to apply for asylum but wait on the other side of the border for a judge to hear the case. >> a lot of those are interested in this one. tracie, thank you. caltrans reportedly putting the brakes on a planned renovation of the mcarthur maze. critics fear it could spawn a carmageddon. remember that whole mess in l.a.?

it would bring vertical clearances up to present day standards and create lengthy closures in the process. caltrans has been holding open house meetings since the announcement. according to the eagle eye, public pressure is causing them to rethink and re-do their plan. there is no timetable when renovation work might get under way. 6:09 for you. can you feel the buzz? the playoff buzz that is. the warriors will try to close out the series against the clippers at the s.a.p. center. fans will talk about last night's game for years to come. we're serious about that. that game had it all. sharks face elimination in game 7, down 3-0 to vegas with 10 minutes late and a brutal hit on joe pavels can i left him bloody and unconscious there. sharks went on a five-minute power play, scoring four times to take the lead. then vegas tied the game, sending the game into overtime.

trump complained about tariffs on harleys and said so unfair to the u.s., we will reciprocate. now, we have talked in the past how president trump's descriptions of what's going on in the world of tariffs don't match up with reality or even match what he said in the past. the eu increased tariffs on harley davidson as a response to our tariffs. they went from 6% to 33%. so harley moved a factory overseas to reduce its costs from the tariff. and president trump then told fans to boycott harley. here he is in june of last year. >> spent a lot of time with them. build them in the usa. your customers won't be happy if you don't, i'll tell you that. >> other news, s&p 500, nasdaq opening at record highs this morning. boeing keeps holding the dow down. tesla reports financials. that will be important today. microsoft, facebook due too. big day for earnings. we were talking tuesday about herman cain dropping out of the nomination for fed governor.

and those temperatures going up fast. this is where we begin. 55 degrees in san francisco. 54 in napa. and you step out the door already to 60 in oakland. 62 in palo alto. as you're getting up and getting the kids ready for school this morning, in martinez, expect it to be right at around 60 degrees. it will be a nice walk to school as the kids head out for recess, it will start to warm up. by the time you go back to pick them up from school, we'll be in the upper 80s today. let's go to the south bay with a look at our highs today. los gatos reaching 86 degrees. 87 in milpitas. there will be a light breeze picking up today. but it's not going to provide much relief when the temperatures are reaching 9 2 in concord. 88, martinez. for the peninsula, a comfortable 70 degrees a lot half moon bay. 80, daly city. upper 70s, even a few spots in san francisco reaching back into the low 80s. in the low 90s, though, for santa rosa, reaching 93.

that's where we will probably see more records set again today. so it's a day where it's going to be hot. a lot of tree pollen. you'll probably just want to stay in the air-conditioning today. that will help out with the allergies and your comfort level. we have seen quiet weather. high pressure causing the air to sink. as the air sinks, it warms. but it is steering any clouds away from the bay area. we will see a change in the pattern going toward the end of the weekend. even a slight chaps of rain as the storm system nears the region. i don't think we will see a lot out of this. we will keep a slight chance in the forecast late sunday, early monday. it will cool off our temperatures. much more of an ocean breeze into the beginning of next week. as you head over to mike, tracking another crash in the tri-valley. >> yeah, we had the early crash at the dublin interchange. it cleared. good recovery for the speeds. we may see a little more slowing again. right now take a second and look at this map.

fastrak slowing down the last five minutes. the crash is on the shoulder at dublin interchange. no other problems. back to you. >> 6:31. breaking news in sunnyvale. some streets are closed after a terrifying crash there. >> a driver slamming into a crowd of people. now there are questions this morning as to why the driver did not stop. bob redell live at the scene with the streets are still closed this morning. right? or part of them, anyway. >> reporter: correct. you can still drive down the el camino, sunnyvale avenue. some of the lanes are shut down. police are waiting for the sun to come up. so they will get investigators out here to look at the scene. we are trying to figure out who the driver is, and why did he, according to police, intentionally run over people in the intersection.

this happened 6:40. he ran into eight people. two have been on bicycles. remaining six on foot. they were either in the crosswalk or sidewalk waiting to cross. in this view, you can see their belongings strewn all over the place. all eight victims. the youngest 18 years old. they were taken to the hospital. police say some of the injuries are serious. the driver crashed into a nearby tree. he was taken into custody, arrested. please questioned him again. >> we do have preliminary witness statements that the car was accelerating. and based upon what's at scene, it looks like he didn't try to brake at all. >> they will update us at a news conference scheduled for sometime later today. as far as the lanes shut down

creek. school officials say two playgrounds were littered with glass, pellet gun capsules and clothing from lost and found the past few weeks. a third person fell to their death at the grand canyon this year alone. investigators say it was a 70-year-old woman whose body was recovered about 200 feet below the rim. earlier this month, a 67-year-old man foley to his death. and some march a man from hong kong died when he fell to take pictures. some people blame a lack of park rangers for these deaths. >> it looked like netflix will not get shutout at the academy awards. the academy of motion picture arts and sciences is keeping its requirement that a feature film length will only need to run for one week to qualify for best picture. the decision comes despite calls

everything looking good, the sun is shining. but it's going to be hot today. reaching into the mid-80s by early afternoon. we will talk about where we can set new records and if it cools off. that's in the forecast in less than five minutes. and looking at the san mateo bridge. i have started a little something in this shot. we'll show you the hidden picture coming up if you can't find it. if you're planning to fill up on your commute, expect pain at the pump. we are paying the highest prices in all of the country. this is a gas station in contra costa county where drivers will pay $4.15 for regular. never mind the premium if your car calls for that. an average for a gallon is $4.03, so we're even higher than that. this unexplained price hike is costing californians $17 billion since february 2015.

a called called summit learning is facing backlash in the midwest. it's an education program and it's not going well. nbc's ron mott spoke with kids in kansas who were pulled out of glass >> reporter: good morning to you. both here in routpin rural kans things are popping up, a silicon valley approach to learning. they have instituted it here in some of the schools. it is being met with resistance as you can see on the windows behind me. some of the parents have gone as far as pulling kids out of their schools. they said too much focus on computer instruction, screen time. a lot of them are staring at screens for a better part of the school week, learning instruction that way. some students say they simply can't learn that way. not enough reaction between teachers and students. it's a big topic here and elsewhere in kansas where they are trying this out. this is not a new approach. the curriculum programs have

leave and to go to a nearby park so city workers could clean up the property. >> 6:45 right now. and the president says this morning that he will stop an impeachment by going to the supreme court. >> scott mcgrew, that's not how impeachment works. >> no, it is not, kris. we are struggling to understand what the president means. in a tweet he sent out just a short time ago, he says, if the partisan dems ever try to impeach, i would first head to the supreme court. not only are there no high crimes and misdemeanors, there are no crimes by me at all. now, there are a couple of things to unpack here. impeachment is done in congress. the charges brought by the house, the conviction in the senate, the constitution, using the words congress has the sole power. the supreme court is not involved exempt in the sense that the chief justice acts as a judge in the trial. you can't stop impeachment in the supreme court. you can, as nixon and clinton

did, ask the supreme court to stop congress from gathering certain evidence. both incidentally failed. trump pointed out several days in a row he has not been charged with a crime and thus can't be impeached. that's also not how this work. the constitution is vague about what qualifies for impeachment. misdemeanor doesn't mean crime. it means miss behavior. there is accepted legal policy that a president cannot be charged with a crime, which leaves impeachment the only result. we're watching what, if any, congress will do a day after the trump administration defied an order to turn over his taxes. the law says this man, elijah cummings, has the power to do it. the white house has taken the claim to court. but one way or the other, we will figure out today what congress is willing to do. a lot about its stomach for defending itself as a co-equal

upper 80s by. a look at all of our high temperatures today. up to 81 in oakland. we may be setting records in tphaup, s napa, santa rosa. livermore is our high temperature expected today. palo alto, reaching a high of 88 this afternoon. so as you're starting out, you get a look out the window. you're getting dressed. it's one of those days where you want to try to do something to cool off. if you're on spring break, maybe it's a good pool day or good shorts weather for heading out and about. we have very quiet, dry weather across the recently. we have also high pressure that's blocked any clouds. and that high pressure causes the air to sink. as it sinks, it warms up. that is why we are under high heat right now. it blocks off, allows for a storm system to brush the bay area close by. we will keep a slight chance of rain in the forecast for late sunday into monday. we will see a shift in those winds. much more of an ocean breeze

and welcome back. before you head out the door, it is 6:55. here are the top stories on "today in the bay". breaking news this morning. we know the fbi is assisting in the investigation in sunnyvale right now as we look live at el qcamino real and sunnyvale. officers are looking to find a motive after a driver plowed into a group of people. this may have been on purpose. it happened around 6:40 last night. it wasn't even dark yet. a black sedan right into eight people, the youngest victim 13

years old. they were taken to the hospital. some in serious condition at last check. the driver is in custody, but the reasons behind his actions remain a mystery. again, we have just confirmed the fbi is assisting sun have yale department of public safety with this investigation. >> we do have preliminary witness statements that the car was accelerating. and based upon what's on scene, it looks like that he didn't try to break at all. police tell us that they will update us with with a news conference sometime later today. we'll keep you posted on that. happening today, a san francisco federal judge hears arguments to block a white house policy forcing asylum seekers to return to mexico. this is as their cases are decided. well, earlier this month, the judge is issuing a preliminary injunction, blocking it temporarily. the government today is offering to lift that injunction. aclu is among the groups trying to block the trump administration's policies. potts will have a closer look later on as well. the dow jones, we are watching that as well. wall street, where the s&p and the nasdaq both closed at new record highs yesterday. so far in the first half hour of trading, it looks like investors are hitting the pause button, maybe the brakes a little bit. the dow and the nasdaq have been essentially flat-lining. s&p set its previous report high seven months ago back in september. all right. also, filing for bankruptcy will not prevent pg&e from dolling out nearly a quarter billion dollars in bonuses this year after a bankruptcy judge's ruling yesterday that allows the utility to pay the bonuses as long as pg&e reaches certain incentives. they have to do with safety. some of them also have to do with financial performance and customer satisfaction. up to 10,000 pg&e workers could be eligible to get some of the $235 million in bonus money.

new details caltrans is reportedly putting the brakes for now on a planned renovation for the mcarthur maze. critics feared it may spawn a bay area carmageddon there. the project would bring virtual clearances up to present day standards but create lengthy closures in the process. caltrans has been holding open houses in the wake of last month's announcement. according to the evil eye, public pressure is making them rethink and refine the plan. no time able on when renovation work may get going. also new, walgreen's and rite aid customers will have to be 21 years old to buy tobacco products. the drugstore chains both announced tuesday they are increasing the minimum age. the companies say raising the age is important to keep the products away from kids and teenagers. rite aid is also removing
