fortunately it appears no one was killed. >> reporter: overnight a severe storm system triggering dangerous weather across is south, torrential rains and possible tornadoes touching down in louisiana and parts of texas. in st. augustine, emergency crews assessing the damage after a tornado slammed the area, wrecking homes and businesses. leroy hughes, the mayor says a tornado ripped through his neighborhood, destroying his living room and kitchen, trapping hughes and his wife in their bedroom before they were able to free themselves. >> all of a sudden when it hit the house it was just like, whooo! when it hit, you still could hear the winds. >> reporter: were you afraid? >> i didn't have time to be afraid. >> reporter: in leander, 60 mile-per-hour winds and rains forced daniel brown to hunker down with his wife and two young daughters. >> this is a real shock. >> reporter: a tree crashing down in his front yard. >> there's char. maybe it was a lightning strike.

>> reporter: national weather service confirming there was a dornd that demolished building in bryan and social media users capturing this funnel cloud. this slow-moving cluster of thunderstorms hovering over the ft. worth area for more than 24 hours, catching drivers off guard, dramatically flooding the parking lot at dallas love field. the lower level now closed as the city tries to pump it dry. kxas reporter courtney recording her own, much-delayed bumpy, white-knuckled flight into dallas. while it appears nobody was killed here in san augustine, there are some injuries, including the mayor's wife who was climbing out of bed when her alarm went off warning her about the tornado a 2 x 4 came down and hit her in the shoulder. meantime, in rusten, louisiana, another tornado touched down there. the authorities say it appears two people died there. savannah? >> kerry sanders in hard-hit

texas this morning. thank you. dylan is for al tracking the storms. dylan, what's next? >> we'll see the storms move to the east. yesterday we only had three reported tornadoes. as you see it only takes one to cause significant damage. the one in san augustine, tossed debris 20,000 feet in the air. that shows it was a very, very powerful tornado. right now we have severe thunderstorm warnings across mississippi back through louisiana and this is the zone from louisiana over into the panhandle of florida where we could see wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour, isolated tornadoes and also large hail. it's all along this cold front that's slowly moving to the east so the main threat today will be along the gulf coast. tomorrow it makes its way up and down the east coast although the severity of the storms will weaken, we are looking at the potential of some flooding rains with as much as 2 to 3 inches of rain expected that could cause delays and major airports tomorrow, but today most of the rain will be down through mississippi, alabama, into louisiana where we could see 2 to 3 inches of rain, and that

could lead to some flooding. savannah? >> thank you. also breaking just this morning, former vice president joe biden formally entering the 2020 race for president. using a sharply-worded video on twitter to announce his long-awaited decision. nbc's andrea mitchell is up early with the story. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. joe biden hoping the third time is a charm amp failing to win the democratic nomination in 1988 and 2008. releasing this video this morning announcing he is once again running for president. this time the 76-year-old former vice president plunging into the youngest, largest, most diverse primary field in history and saying the country is in the battle for the soul of the nation, he says because of the trump presidency. >> if we give donald trump eight years in the white house, he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation. who we are. and i cannot stand by and watch that happen. that's why today i'm announcing my candidacy for president of the united states. >> reporter: in a dramatic campaign video using images from

the charlottesville white supremacist march, saying president trump shocked the conscience of the nation saying there were some very nice people on both sides. >> and in that moment, i knew the threat to this nation was unlike any i had ever seen in my life time. we are in the battle for the soul of this nation. i believe history will look back on four years of this president and all he embraces as an aberrant moment in time. >> reporter: biden starts out at the head of the pack, getting a big boost from name recognition, after decades in the senate and two terms as vice president, as well as sympathy for the loss of his son bo, biden does have a strong base in the labor movement and now he's planning to highlight that support with a union rally in pittsburgh monday. but the political challenges are daunting. first campaign money. biden does not have the online base of small donors that have

fueled bernie sanders' campaign and helped propel beto o'rourke, pete buttigieg and kamala harris to become rising stars. second the age factor, a year younger than sanders, 76, biden has little experience campaigning in the digital age. and after years on the public stage along with his many accomplishments positions biden held that are now controversial, voting for the iraq war, authoring the 1994 crime bill now resented among some minority communities. and his treatment of anita hill when he led the senate judiciary committee hearings on clearance thomas. >> to this day, i regret i couldn't come up with a way to get her the hearing she deserved. >> more recently, unwanted contact to women, although not sexually. biden responded to the allegations saying he never touched anyone in ways he believed were inappropriate, but he says he will be much more mindful of personal space. >> and i get it.

telling the cameras, we had a very substantive conversation one on one. the men exchanging gifts, ceremonial swords, the messaging unmistakable. >> the symbolism also unmistakable. keir, what message to the united states are putin and kim trying to send during this summit? >> reporter: well, good question, craig. i think for kim jong-un, the message to president trump is, you know, you're not my only friend in the world. and also, kim jong-un will be hoping that those u.s.-led sanctions can be undermined also bit through russia, because the economic ties with russia just along the border here are worth millions of dollars to north korea. for president putin, of course, he puts himself back in the middle of the world stage again. that's exactly where he likes to be. craig, look deeply into the mueller report, i take away from it is just how hungry russia is to engage with america and be noticed by america. president putin has just said

that kim jong-un has asked him to take what they talked about to president trump. president putin will relish being in that position. craig? >> keir simmons in russia. thank you. back here, measles cases in the u.s. have now climbed to the highest levels in 25 years. nationwide, the centers of disease control and prevention report 695 cases of measles in 22 states. officials say the majority who have gotten sick were not vaccinated. measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world and can have dangerous health consequences especially for children. it was considered wiped out in this country only 19 years ago. a lot more to get to this morning including the eyes of football fans firmly on nashville, tennessee, the music city hosting the nfl draft which gets under way later tonight. and it is going to be, as it has been for a number of years now, a huge party. nbc stephanie gosk joins us with more on that. it's hard to understate how big, how much of a spectacle this

lookout called pike creek vista park officials say cynthia atlee veered off the trail to a ledge and had trouble getting back. >> on the end of a point. if -- probably going to fall. >> reporter: a technical rescue team was called but she fell before she arrived. >> copy. she just fell. >> we're not sure what she was doing prior to the fall. but she was out on the point by herself. she wasn't with a group. >> reporter: just three weeks ago a 67-year-old man also fell to his death along the canyon's south rim plunging nearly 400 feet. >> i've seen people crawl literally to the very edge, and lay down and hold their phone, but i think that's just the selfie era. people are doing that everywhere. >> reporter: last month two other tourists lost their lives in the grand canyon area but outside the national park's boundaries. at least one fell while trying to take a picture near the famous skywalk. >> there's no rule against stepping off the path and exploring the park as you want to, but we want people to be aware of their surroundings, and move carefully.

>> reporter: officials say around a dozen people die in the park each year but most of the deaths are from medical causes often related to the heat. falling deaths are extremely rare. this week authorities also released new details about a separate tragedy in yosemite national park where an israeli teen died reportedly trying to re-create a picture he'd seen on instagram. rangers urging caution in precarious areas where one slip can be deadly. >> so in addition to the caution, joe, do they have a special message for tourists who might be headed to the grand canyon. >> yeah. it may sound like common sense. park rangers say dramatic photos are not worth the risk. number one tip, don't go anywhere near the edge. use the zoom on your camera instead. back to you guys. >> joe there at the grand canyon. let's get a check of the weather. dylan in for al.

something they've already doing with 6-month-old easton after their devastating loss. for bode miller and his wife, it's a warning urgent. precious 6-month-old son easton getting first water lessons. >> you talk to any parent who has lost a child to drowning, the research i saw 6-month-old babies and 1-year-olds and 16-month-olds, 19-month-olds swimming that could have been m emmie. should have been and it was that easy, to commit to one session of what we're doing now. it would have changed everything. >> reporter: in june of last year the millers lost their angelic 19-month-old daughter emmie after she fell into a neighbor's pool and drowned. savannah spoke to them just weeks after the accident when they were expecting baby easton.

>> there's -- not a day that goes by that i don't pray for the opportunity to go back to that day. and make it different. but now we have this opportunity to make other parents days different. >> reporter: drowning is the leading cause of unintentional deaths for children 1 to 4 years old. not the millers are using their tragedy to educate others about pool barriers and drowning previous. michael patrella is a strained instructoren. >> the difference of life and death is three inches. face down to face up. getting to his back and resting and breathing is where he needs to be to save himself. >> reporter: initially it may be jarring, but it's not traumatic for babies. the lessons are every day ten minutes for about a month. >> as parents, one of the things we know, it's our job to prepare or children for the situation, and not the situation for the

child. and this is one of those things where, water is the most dangerous situation that they can encounter, and it is 100% unavoidable. 100% water is everywhere. >> reporter: it's a danger they want pediatricians to bring up with parents, too. >> being a parent is, is inherently scary. you're worried about your food or your screen time, whatever, but "the" number one thing is, that can take your child where none is relevant is drowning. >> what are you opening pediatricians ask parents that come in with their babies? >> do you have a plan and are you doing the right stuff? >> is it okay if he swallows a little bit of water. >> swallowing is fine. he's not aspirating at all. >> reporter: easton was born just one month before emmie would have turned 2. how much peace as he brought to you both? >> so much. i mean, having a new baby, and even though it's not going to fill that hole, it adds that much more love.

mary lou retton tumbled her way into history. >> she has done the best vault of her life. >> reporter: and became the first u.s. woman to take home gold in the individual all-around event. she was also the most decorated athlete of the summer games. >> hi! >> reporter: mckenna didn't start pursuing elite gymnastics until 17. the same age her mother retired. their shares love of the sport and each other is apparent. last month mckenna posted this photo to her instagram page writing, surreal moment. sharing it with the pioneer herself. i'm already crying. >> i know! >> mary lou and mckenna with us exclusively this morning. >> hi! >> hi, ladies. telling mary lou. no poker face. in the stands, screaming her heart out. >> i'm going to sit like every other normal parent and i just can't do it. i am so proud of her.

>> that wasn't just any routine, mckenna. end of the competition. everybody is done. a lot of meets going on, and everybody's looking at you. did you feel the pressure? >> no. my team is something special to me, and i knew this was my final routine of the season, and giving it to them and using the energy, exactly what we needed, energy from the crowd. >> growing up as you went into gymnastics, how much pressure did you feel then knowing that your mom had done fairly well at this sport? >> right. i don't understand i understood the enormity of what she did and the groundbreaking gymnastics she did at the time. to me she's just mom. made me run at 6:00 a.m. in the morning, the walk of champions. i don't know -- >> no junk food. >> she's just mom to me and that's all she is. >> i don't think i ever put pressure on them. i put my four daughters in a sport that i love. it's woven into every fabric of my being and we're a gymnastics family. three stuck with it. one was a cheerleader, and, you know, her path was different

than mine and i'm so proud of everything, and my last thought to you was, remember this. my words were, remember this, baby girl. this is your last floor routine. >> hmm. >> i know! the whole place -- such a moment. a surreal moment. >> picture perfect. >> it really was. >> should have been a 10. >> see? always a competitor. but it was cute to watch you guys, when we did that side-by-side, because you're like, oh, you're landing this may mary lou, thought mckenna's was better. >> i did. >> did you ever give pointers. >> very few. i remember trying to correct her as a little bitty kid in the front yard. a cartwheel. practicing a roundoff, when you bring your feet together. i was saying that's so good, but why don't you get yore feet together quicker. she looked at me and goes, what do you know? right? knowing that -- i know a little

bit about gymnastics. >> mckenna, what's next? you majored in psychology. if i'm not mistaken, injured last year, you have another year of eligibility that is correct. >> you could -- you could get back out there? >> yes. so i haven't officially announced this, but i have decided to graduate with my senior class. i will not be picking up next year. >> that really was your final floor routine. i wondered if your mom just gave it away. >> that was it. i feel so at peace. i don't think another year of gymnastics could give me anything i needed more. lsu, the coaches, the village we like to call it, just, that team is something so special and i want to finish out with them. >> you literally left it all on the floor. >> i did. >> literally she d. go tigers! >> what will you do now when you graduate? >> i want to be a speaker and writer, just like my mom. >> so good. >> it's a gift. >> on a serious note, mary lou, gymnastics is running through

and we are back with a special guest here on the plaza. u.s. navy veteran david miller along with his wife and daughter, an opportunity to shine a light on and pay tribute to those who serve our country. >> right. retired petty officer served more than ten years. during his deployment on the "uss nimitz" when david's life changed. >> i just knew i wanted to serve in the navy with all my heart. that's what i wanted to do. >> reporter: david miller enlisted in the united states navy in 2007. two weeks after graduating from high school. >> throughout much of my years i was an aviation ordinanceman working on the f-18 hornets, super hornets and ea-18 crawlers. >> first stationed on the "uss kitty hawk" and then "the uss george washington" assigned to

military exercises off the coast of japan. >> what i loved most was the adventure and the travel. >> reporter: he fell in love with the job, but he didn't expect what came next. >> she washe one. a year later we got married. >> reporter: miller met misa serving in japan and they married in 2011 and a year later their daughter rachel was born. >> she's fun-loving, very outgoing. just the sweetest little girl. >> reporter: but miller was away months at a time on deployment. in 2017 he was stationed on the "uss nimitz" in the middle east. >> it's supposed to be about a seven-month deployment. but sadly, it ended up in disaster. >> reporter: miller 2kwe eer de fever and his health took a turn for the worst. >> i just had a seizure, went unconscious and collapsed, and the next thing you know i was in the e.r. of the ship. >> reporter: miller was fighting for his life. doctors onboard the ship medevac'd him to a hospital in bahrain. >> i was scared so bad, because

i couldn't walk. i thought i was paralyzed. i just thought, man, how am i going to support my wife and child now? >> reporter: he was diagnosed with a rare disorder, cerebellar atrophy and ataxia, a condition that affects movement and speech. >> my motor skills as far as walking, doing physical labor, it's very limited. and my speech is slurred. >> reporter: there's no cure for miller's condition, but he says his love for his country, his family and strong faith keep him positive. >> at least i gave my all when i was able-bodied. that's all i can say. i just tried my best. >> and petty officer david miller is here along with his wife misa and they're adorable daughter. good morning to all of you. david, hearing this story and everything you've been through, how are you doing? >> i'm doing better with my family, and the support of the
