hitting eight people with his car in due in court today. we have been covering this story since the shocking crash on tuesday. bob redell live at the crash scene in sunnyvale. i know we have spoken to the former roommate of the suspect? >> reporter: correct, marcus. yes. and the former roommate said eye swra ya peoples said he was quiet, friendly, tphoenever sho signs of violent behavior. he is expected at court to eight counts of anticipated murder after allegedly driving his toyota corolla into two bicyclists and six pedestrians. the most serious hurt, a 13-year-old girl, a seventh grader at sunnyvale middle school. she is still in critical condition. peoples mother and brother told us he was an army vet. served in iraq. has been treated for post-traumatic stress disorder. chuck herrera, the former

roommate i was telling you about, said peoples moved out last year without incident and said he never saw any signs that peoples had ptsd. >> there is no way to know. just not the guy that i know. i knew he was taking meds. they didn't ask for what. >> reporter: police say peoples was on the way to deliver food to his bible study group tuesday night when the collisions occurred. witnesses have said peoples was mumbling after the crash saying thank you, jesus. police say he has not shown any remorse for what they believe is a deliberate act. they don't believe it was an act of terrorism but still don't know why he allegedly drove into that group of people. >> very concerning. thank you very much, bob. 5:02. president trump speaking to the national rifle association. the convention is being held in

downtown indianapolis. police planning for protesters. he is weighing on joe biden's bid for president in a new interview overnight. tracie potts joins us live with more on those comments. good morning, tracie. >> reporter: hi there, laura. good morning. good morning, everyone. the president talking about several of the many democratic candidates. but honing in on just two who he says could likely win that nomination. overnight president trump tells fox former vice president joe biden could win the democratic nomination for president. >> he's not the brightest light bulb in the group, i don't think. but he has a name that they know. >> reporter: biden's announcement focused on president trump. later in delaware. >> hey, guys. >> hi. >> how are you? >> reporter: he doubled down on what's expected to be a central theme of his campaign.

"today in the bay" kris sanchez joining us live about his social media coverage. what is nick talking about that has everyone so hot? >> reporter: well, here's the thing. he's known for making tackles and forcing fumbles. but he's also known for liking and posting some controversial stuff on social media. if you look through his twitter feed right now, it's pretty clean. it's all about football. it's all about the nfl and the ramp-up to the draft. gone are the tweets that made people wonder if he is a racist and homophobe.

here he expresses his admiration for president trump. and here he calls colin kaepernick a clown. here's what he had to say last night. >> i have learned from it. i was insensitive of the things i was saying. i'm glad to be moving on from it and to start with the niners. >> reporter: some fans wonder how well he's going to work with the 49ers players who supported kaepernick in that onfield protest against social injustice by kneeling during the national anthem. others say it is just time to play some football. it is time for the 49ers to win some games. i posted a question on twitter and facebook. i want to be what you think, whether or not it matters what nick bosa says off the field, or if it only matters what happens on the field? in santa clara, kris sanchez, "today in the bay". >> all right. this will not be ending any time soon. kris, thank you. raiders fans, don't you worry.

oakland took three players in the first round. clemson defensive end ferrell. alabama running back josh jacobs. and jonathan abram. a deadly officer-involved shooting near fremont hospital. it is a story we first brought you as breaking news on "today in the bay" last week. investigators say the suspect fired a gun at an officer who was driving back to the police station. the officer made a u-turn, used his rifle to fireback at the suspect. two other officers arrived and also shot at the suspect, killing him. facebook is suing a company based in new zealand for selling fake likes, and followers. the lawsuit is being filed in u.s. federal court. in a statement, facebook said it is sending a message that the social media network will not tolerate this type of activity.

it comes as the social media giant is dealing with several data privacy scandals. >> governor gavin newsom signing off on a new internet sales tax law. it requires companies like amazon and ebay to collect taxes on some out-of-state sellers. however, they must bring in $500,000 in sales. 5:08. new this morning, we're getting a look at how fax refunds are stacking up this year. the april 15th deadline has come and gone. the average week for april 19th was $2,725. that's down 2% from last year. overall, uncle sam paid out $261 billion to taxpayers. the tax season was the first time americans filed under the new tax cuts and jobs act. hey, you may want to spend your tax refund on a pretzel

buff let's just get up, get the kids ready and out the door for school this morning. south bay, we start out in the mid-50s. as they head out for recess, it will feel nicer with low 70s today. it will be warm but not as hot as it has been. we get ready for the sharks game tonight. and it begins at 7:00. it's going to be right at about 74 degrees. so really nice for some of the pregame festivities later on in the evening, we drop back into the mid-60s. heading over to mike, it's mostly a great drive. >> that's right. so most of the folks can focus on how they will watch two games at the same time, sharks and warriors both in playoff mode. meanwhile, the drive is on friday mode. small crash for san jose and the tri-valley. getting more detail. it sounds like it is out of lanes for west 580. we will track that very important spot. over here, highway 4 is still jammed up. status still the same. the tow truck is somewhere in

carquinas bridge. and very happy friday to you. we'll get the latest gdp numbers in about 15 minutes. amazon announced its earnings. we'll get to that in a minute. lyft continues to struggle. this has uber thinking how much had you money it will try to raise on its ipo. new paperwork will show it tries to raise $10,000. this will give an overall value of $83 billion. we expect that to happen early next month. amazon said it will reward its best customers with faster delivery. prime customers will pay a bit more than $100 a year. in exchange, get free shipping. earlier this week, rather, amazon announced it will be able to return your stuff at kohl's. that starts in july.

if you're going to the game tonight at oracle park, it will be 58 degrees. kind of cool at first pitch. it gets even cooler as the game goes along. it may mist and drizzle at times. make sure you're prepared for that. as we look at our high temperatures for today, it is still going to be warm for the inland valleys. reaching 85 in antioch. concord, high of 86 degrees. some upper 70s and low 80s for the north bay. this is better than the 90s we had earlier this week. san francisco reaching 65. and 80 in palo alto and san jose. and nice, quiet weather across the region. very dry air. though we have seen the return of the marine layer that will be along the coast producing some fog. not only here in the bay area but all the way down to southern california. if you have travel plans this weekend, expect it to be foggy at some of the beaches. and then we're going to see some

partly cloudy skies going into the next several days. it will be a weak storm system passing by the region. it will bring a slight chance of rain for the sierra. for us, we will see a few more clouds and a shift in the winds brings in cooler air. much more an ocean breeze into next week. so it looks really nice. still warm today. slightly cooler tomorrow. that trend continues on sunday. next week, mid-70s inland. and san francisco, mostly staying in the low 60s through next thursday. mike, you've been looking at the recovery for i-80. that's right. recovery mode for those who missed it before the commercial. the lanes have been cleared. upper east shore freeway. speed sensors starting. hercules much better now. jammed toward highway 4. recovery rippling back and forth. even though the commute is five or six minutes delay, 10 minutes coming across the carquinas

bridge, toured pinol and richmond. it will keep things calm. you should be calm. the rest of the drive is fine. oakland, drive is great for 580, 880, and the tri-valley also. this one crash right here is 580 westbound. it was originally reported around vasquez, folks out of brentwood expecting more traffic. over here, crash reported southbound 101 approaching capital expressway or perhaps just past it. we have marked both sections there. a little slowing as the fast lane is blocked by one crash. we saw a lot more slowing the last few minutes. maybe if we're on a traffic break we will clear it. lighter volume right now. holding steady. back to you. >> thanks, mike. all right. taking part in a movement. >> a movement? >> the big movie event. the biggest thing that's going

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. meteorologist kari hall has good news for it. >> it will be a great weekend across the bay area. for all the pregame celebrations, out around downtown san jose, warm with low 80s. as we head out the door to evergreen we are going to start out with low 50s this morning. nice, cool start. but of course the temperatures ramp up quickly throughout the day. mid-70s by late morning, early afternoon, eventually hitting 80 degrees. 85 in antioch. we'll talk about the weekend and events going on. mike, it's mostly friday light. >> mostly friday light. bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights didn't turn on until 5:40. might be the same today. the bay bridge toll plaza itself, you saw how clear it is. we still have recovery, all the folks held up off the carquinas bridge in pinol.

earlier crash cleared. they are just about getting to the berkeley curve. we will see how caltrans reacts, if they turn on the metering lights or not. a nice, smooth, easy drive. green sensors all around. >> thank you, mike. 5:32. contra costa county, police are asking the public for more information about a violent struggle to arrest a naked man. >> officers say he was running around a church parking lot. pete suratos joins us from antioch with some of the strange details. pete? >> reporter: yeah. good morning to you, laura and marcus. strange story, indeed. we know two officers were injured. they were minor injuries following this incident. it took place behind me at the holy rosary in antioch. i want to get into the details we are getting from police. they got the call roughly 2:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon. the suspect in this, 28-year-old pedro maris, was reportedly acting erratic and appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. he ran around the parking lot

and eventually into the church. three officers were needed to arrest him. he showed extreme strength. two of the officers had minor injuries. the suspect was eventually taken to a hospital after he was arrested. but we are being told he is going to be booked into county jail later today. live in antioch, pete suratos for "today in the bay". all right. good thing they caught him. thanks so much, pete. 5:33. happening today, the future of pg&e heads in the ball as the cpuc meets this morning. they will make changes to the management and structure so fast utility company. this comes after pg&e filed for bankruptcy. the as we have been reported, your bill will soon be going up. regulators are proposing a rate hike. it will raise the average customer's bill by $3.50 a month. but the hike could soon go up even more.

pg&e is seeking a second rate increase. in oakland, a police officer is recovering this morning after he was stabbed in the neck by a woman. this happened as he was walking to his car last night in plainclothes after work not far from police headquarters. >> they were on their way to their vehicle when a person armed with a knife approached them and started stabbing them. >> that officer is in stable condition. the woman was promptly arrested. so far no motive in that stabbing. also in the east bay, jury deliberations under way in the case of a serial dui driver accused of killing two children. investigators say wilson was under the influence when he veered off a concord offramp and slammed into a family's car back in 2017. 5-year-old and 10-year-old were killed in the crash. their mother and baby brother were badly injured.

friends and family say they want justice for the kids and their mother. >> hopefully after this is over she will find a little closure and justice. but she will never, ever be the same. she's always going to have those boys just in her heart and her mind. it's awful. >> wilson's attorney claims his client was not drunk at the time of the crash. if convicted, wilson could face 15 years to life in prison. a follow-up. with car thefts on the rise, bart is unleashing a new crime-fighting tool. a board of directors gave the thumbs up for police to use automatic license plate readers to help catch criminals. bart will install four license plate readers as part of a new pilot program. it is not being said which station will get the license plate readers. not everyone is actually happy with this recent decision. they worry i.c.e. could use it to target undocumented

immigrants at bart. bart said it will only be used for investigating crimes. an investigation under way into what caused a landscaping truck to flip over. take a look at this mess. it spilled ready-made cement mix. the rocks and sand filled the cars below damaging at least one of them. while drivers navigated around the mess, chp started investigating. they said speed, load weight, and wind could all be factors. a live look at oracle arena, home of the warriors. tonight dubs back on the road in l.a. trying to close out their series against the clippers. and a live look at the s.a.p. center where they take on the colorado avalanche. it's game one of round two for the playoffs for them. sharks fans pumped after the big comeback against the vegas golden knights. sharks face elimination in game 7.

we are zooming out showing you what you would expect. this is what we expect for friday as well. very light flow of traffic throughout the bay bridge toll plaza. no metering lights yet. the arrow shows you the recovery off the carquinas bridge. i'm having trouble talking. >> carquinas bridge. easier said than done. >> speaking of the weekend, it is going to be a nice one weather-wise. >> and we have a lot of sports, festivals, lots of events going on. let's make some plans. maybe you're going to the giants game this evening. first pitch at 7:15. it's going to be chilly out there. breezy. temperatures in the upper 50s. and of course we've got that fog that will be lingering over oracle park. if you're in the south bay, all clear. much warmer temperatures. puck drops at 7:00. we'll see those temperatures. mid-70s as you head into the s.a.p. center. and upper 60s later on in the evening. now, if you're going around the bay area, we're going to have a wide range in temperatures.

from the coast at 63 degrees, the bay at 75, and inland valleys still very warm reaching low 80s. it will be slightly cooler sunday with more clouds in the mix. with some temperatures ranging from the low 60s to the upper 70s across the pay area. if you want to go skiing this weekend, squaw valley is looking nice. you can go skiing with temperatures in the mid-60s. but a lot of that snow is melting. we still have quite a bit of snow still left on the ground. so you better get to the sierra sometime soon. if you want to hang out in napa valley, beautiful with highs in the low 80s today. and much more comfortable by sunday with a high of 75 degrees. if you're going to the pacific coast dream machine at half moon bay this weekend, on sunday it is still going to be cool. we'll see the fog lingering over the coastline as we go throughout the day. so our temperatures don't warm up that much. we won't get much sun there. if you're somewhere a little bit farther south, we'll see a mix

it's a story we've been covering for years on "today in the bay". you might recall that back in 2015, a pipeline sent 140,000 gallons of crude oil gushing onto a beach near santa barbara. it blackened popular beaches for miles, killing wildlife and hurting tourism and fishing. plain all american estimated costs of $300 million apologized and paid for the cleanup. john hickenlooper will be speaking at the commonwealth club this afternoon. and beto o'rourke sunday at the irish cultural center. he will spend four days in california. >> politicians are busy these days. president trump and vice president pence will address the
