as you get ready to head out 101, 54 degrees reaching into the mid-60s by 10:00. and some upper 70s by 1:00 today. so a little bit cooler thanks to the coastal fog. we'll talk about what's going on for the weekend as we head over to mike. you've been tracking the morning commute. that's right. overall it's very clear. we have a traffic alert because of the location and what's going on for highway 24. metering lights on. backup slowly on a light friday. west 24, shy and clear of the caldecott tunnel. we have a crash with an overturned pickup. chp just arrived. they are confirming it's blocking a couple of lanes. they may be running a second hopefully to get the truck back up on its wheels. no major injuries reported. that is the only incident we're tracking right now. >> thanks, mike. the war veteran accused of

hitting more than eight people is due in court today. we have been covering this story, the shocking story since the crash happened on tuesday. bob redell live for us in sunnyvale. i know we have spoken to the suspect's former roommate. what is that roommate saying? >> reporter: correct, marcus. the former roommate said eisaia peoples was quiet, friendly, never showed any signs of violent behavior. he is due in court in san jose around 1:35 this afternoon to enter a plea to eight counts of attempted murder after allegedly driving his toyota corolla into two bikis bicyclists and six pedestrians. a 13-year-old girl still in critical condition in the hospital. peoples mother and brother told us he's an army vet who served

in iraq and has been treated in the past for post-traumatic stress disorder. chuck herrera, the former roommate i was mentioning earlier, said he never saw any signs that peoples had ptsd. >> no way to know he was going to do that. not the guy that i know. i knew he was taking meds. didn't ask for what. >> reporter: police say peoples was on the way to deliver food to his bible study group when the collisions occurred tuesday night. witnesses have said that peoples was mumbling after the crash saying things like thank you, jesus. police say he has not shown any remorse for what they believe is a deliberate attack. he has no prior arrests. they don't know why he allegedly drove into that group of people. bob redell, "today in the bay". thank you, bob.

happening today, president trump speaking to the national rifle association. the convention is being held in downtown indianapolis. police are planning for protesters. trump's speech comes as he weighs in on joe biden's bid for the presidency in a new interview overnight. tracie potts joins us live with more on those comments. good morning, tracie. >> reporter: laura, good morning. and also more on the nra speech today. moments ago, the president tweeted in advance of taking off to go to that speech saying that the nra is getting stronger and stronger and having their powerful support has been helpful. he speaks there today and may. throwing surprises, as he did last year. we begin with the overnight interview where the president talks about which democrat he thinks may rise to the top and challenge him next year. overnight, president trump tells fox former vice president joe

today. by late morning, early afternoon, we're already in the mid-70s. we're back in the 80s again today as the high temperature in livermore reaches 83 degrees. up to 86 in concord. oakland today, expect a high of 75. 80, napa. and 65 in san francisco. much cooler temperatures along the coast. because the marine layer is back producing fog not only here for the bay area but all the way down to southern california. if you'll be traveling for the weekend, keep that in mind. if you have beach plans, it's not going to be the warm, sunny beach you probably were hoping for. and we're going to see a mix of sun and clouds into the weekend. while the inland areas stay very warm, we will see a very weak disturbance passing by moving into the sierra. if you're going to be in some of those areas like yosemite and parts of the tahoe area, it's going to be partly cloudy, slight chance of rain. as we make weekend plans here in the bay area, we have the

month. it could soon go up even more. they are seeking a second rate increase. police are asking the public for more information after a violent struggle to arrest a naked man. officers say he was running around a church parking lot. "today in the bay" pete suratos joins us live from antioch with details on this strange case. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. we are standing in the parking lot in antioch where this man was apparently running around naked in this area before police arrested him. the church behind my is mount holy rosary church. the suspect, 28-year-old pedro maris was acting erratic, appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of the arrest. they said he was running around this parking lot and even into the church at some point. three officers were needed to arrest him. he was reportedly showing extreme strength. as a result, two officers did

experience minor injuries. police are still looking for more information on this case. now, they said the suspect was taken to a hospital after the arrest. he is slated to be booked into county jail later today. we're live in antioch, pete suratos for "today in the bay". >> that's a strange one. thanks, pete. in oakland, a police officer is recovering this morning. this is afts he was walking to s car last night in plainclothes after work. . >> they were on their way to the vehicle when a person armed with a knife approached them and started stabbing them. >> now, that officer is in stable condition. the woman was promptly arrested. so far no motive in that stabbing. also in the east bay, jury deliberations under way in the case of a serial dui driver accused of killing two children. wilson was under the influence

when he veered off a concord off-ramp and slammed into i family's car back in 2017. 5-year-old vincent and 10-year-old lore republican swraeu reyes were killed in the crash. the mother and baby brother badly injured. friends and family want justice for their mother and the kids. >> hopefully after this is over she will find a little closure and justice. but she will never, ever be the same. she's always going to have those boys just in her heart and her mind. it's awful. >> wilson's attorney claims his client was not drunk at the time of the crash. if convicted, wilson could face 15 years to life in prison. 6:34 right now. a follow-up for you. with car thefts on the rise, bart is unleashing a new crime-fighting tool. a board of directors gave the thumbs up for police to use automatic license plate readers to help catch criminals. we voted on a vote in yesterday's newscast.

bart will install four license plate readers as part of a new pilot program. it is not being said which station will get the license plate readers. not everyone is actually happy with this recent decision. privacy advocates worry they worry i.c.e. could use it to target undocumented immigrants at bart. bart said it will only be used for investigating crimes. 6:35. the pulse of the playoffs still pounding here in the bay area. here's a live look at the oracle arena, home of the warriors. tonight the dubs are actually back on the road in l.a. trying to close the series against the clippers. and a live look at the s.a.p. center on the right where the sharks take on the colorado avalanche tonight. game one of the round two playoffs. and shark fans still pumped after the big comeback against the vegas golden knights. the sharks faced elimination in game seven down 3-0 with ten minutes left. the sharks went on a five-minute power play, scoring four times to take the lead. they just tied the game, sending the game into overtime. they came back out on top.

his car is due in court. isaiah peoples is expected to enter a plea to eight counts of attempted murder. police say he drove his toyota corolla to two bicyclists and six pedestrians overnight. the most serious hurt, a 13-year-old girl who is a seventh grader at sunnyvale middle school in critical condition at the hospital. police still do not have a motive. facebook is suing a company based in new zealand for selling fake likes, and followers. the lawsuit is being filed in u.s. federal court. in a statement, facebook said it is sending a message that the social media network will not tolerate this type of activity. it comes as the social media giant is dealing with several data privacy scandals. afpbging our statefecting o et. governor gavin newsom signing off on a new internet sales tax law. it requires companies like amazon and ebay to collect taxes on some out-of-state sellers. however, they must bring in

$500,000 in sales. it is predicted the new law will generate $759 million in state and local taxes by 2021. new details in the worst california coastal oil spill in nearly 25 years. the company behind plains all american pipeline is now facing a fine of $3.3 million. it's a story we've been covering for years on "today in the bay". you might recall that back in 2015, a pipeline sent 140,000 gallons of crude oil gushing onto a beach near santa barbara. it blackened popular beaches for miles, killing wildlife and hurting tourism and fishing. plain all american estimated costs of $300 million apologized and paid for the cleanup. good morning. the "new york times" reports there's a faction within the national rifle association saying the group is getting too

in fact, the first time in 50 years. the federal government demanded a gun accessory be turned over for destruction. rod rosenstein speaking out for the first time since the mueller report telling a group of lawyers, quote, the reason i stood there with a deadpan expression is i was thinking my job is to stand here with a deadpan expression. meanwhile, attorney general barr agreed to testify before congress making one of the only members of the trump administration to agree to testify. some democrats wondering if that's a mistake. because barr did such a good job convincing people the report exonerated the president when in fact, the record specifically it it did not exonerate the president. it's entirely possible barr will be able to do that again in front of congress. follow me on twitter.

to be. mid-50s to low 80s by early afternoon. and the seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen. we check out our highs for today, reaching 65 in san francisco. up to 73 in oakland. and 83 in livermore. and in napa today, expect a high of 80 degrees. you can see that spread in temperatures all because of the marine layer to the coastline, producing fog. and that will not only be the case for the bay area but all the way down to southern california. if you have beach plans, expect it to be cool and foggy there while the valleys will be still heating up. we'll also see more clouds mixing in today. much more in the way of cloud cover saturday into sunday. for us it stays dry. we catch a break in terms of the hot weather we had earlier this week. mid-80s today inland. 82 degrees on saturday. and by sunday, we're up to 79 degrees.

this is last thursday night. the suspect fired a gun at an officer who was driving back to the police station. the officer made a u-turn and used his rifle to fireback at the suspect. two other officers arrived and also shot at the suspect. killing him. new today, police in contra costa are asking the public for more information after a violent struggle to arrest a naked man. he was running around a church parking lot which resulted in two officers suffering minor injuries. according to antioch police, they were called out to the scene yesterday afternoon at the holy rosary church. ramirez appeared to be under the influence of drugs and ran away from police officers. it took three officers to eventually arrest the man, put him in handcuffs. he got treatment at a local hospital and is expected to be booked in county jail today new this morning, your waiting time is about to get even shorter if you subscribe to amazon prime.
