ernest. marianne favro has more. >> reporter: gunfire broke the silence of service at chabad synagogue in poway, california. one woman dead, three others injured, including the rob buy, who was shot in the hand. >> we were able to detain one shooter. no shooters are outstanding. >> reporter: police arrested john t. ernest of san diego. they suspect he's linked to an arson fire in escondido last month. and a letter he posted online hours before the attack. police say they believe the gunman's rifle may have malfunctioned, which may have prevented more people from getting shot. frantic family members rushed to the scene when they got word of the shooting. >> your husband, how is he doing? >> he has high blood pressure. he was shaking.

governor newsom said hate continues to fuel horrific and cowardly acts of violence across our state, country, and world. it must be called out. california stands with poway. >> we were all shocked. >> reporter: here police are doing extra patrols as a precaution. ran buy melanie says faith leaders from many back grounds will meet. >> religious minorities are being targeted in a variety of ways. >> reporter: the attack near san diego happened on the last day of the jewish holiday of passover and comes six months to the day after the attack on the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh. a gunman killed 11 in that attack. marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> president trump expressed sympathy to those affected by the synagogue shooting at the beginning of a rally yesterday in wisconsin. >> our entire nation mourns the

loss of life, prays for the wounded, and stands in solidarity with the jewish community. we forcefully condemn the evil of saepbt essential teufpl and hate, which must be defeated. just happen. must be defeated. >> vice president mike pence tweeted he condemns the aing ta. the fbi has opened a federal hate crime investigation into the driver who plowed into a crowd of people in sunnyvale. the 34-year-old army vet is accused of driving into a crowd of people tuesday night. eight people were injured, including children and adults. a sigh ya peoples is his name. he allegedly ran over the people because he thought some of them were muslim. the bay area chapter of the council on american-islamic relations tells us they welcome the hate crime investigation. and we are learning more about a killing spree that happened across the bay area friday.

three people were killed in three separate cities. as we told you yesterday morning, the manhunt came to a dramatic end as the suspected gunman was on the run. >> reporter: at one of the picnic tables at peoples park in berkeley, there is a collection of flowers and candles and a few rest in peace messages for cal. cal was shot in the head here friday afternoon. >> cal was a cool guy. he was a guy. there was no violence. he didn't bother nobody. he minded his own business. he would play chess, dominoes. >> reporter: he showed us several of his drawings and told me he gave police a detailed sketch of the man you saw. >> did you see the man who came in. >> reporter: he would steal our food, sleeping bags, blankets and stuff like that. >> reporter: at the shooting scene in san francisco, a

memorial where leron davis was killed. they said jefferson had been a positive influence in the neighborhood. >> he was always in the community doing right by the community, helping out folks in the community. >> reporter: in oakland, witnesses say marcus jackson was shot and killed in his own driveway friday morning. neighbors say it might have been the result of a family dispute. 43-year-old stephon jefferson is being held in the county jail. he was driving a black toyota sedan in south lake tahoe. he led police on a high-speed chase into nevada. the officers performed a p.i.t. manuever. >> he struck one deputy in the hand. >> reporter: he was treated and released to police custody. the deputy injured in the shoot-out should recover from his wounds. nbc bay area news. >> we will continue to follow this in the days and weeks ahead. be sure to follow us for the

latest developments. go to nbcbayarea.com. coming together in the face of vandalism. dozens of volunteers gathered in the east bay to clean up manzanita seed school. they shattered windows and debris all over the place. yesterday they cleaned up to help beauty phi the campus. >> we want to leave the campus better than it was before. clean it up, weed, plant new plants that weren't here before, and really let the school community know that we care about them and we want to pitch in and help with the cleanup efforts. >> students also head a move-a-thon. they danced and put on their running shoes, put them to get use all for a good cause. oakland police are spreading a warning tweeting they are out in force this weekend. officers determined to stop violent sideshows.

you are looking at video of a destructive side show caught on camera earlier this month. a group of looters and bus on fire. police say thurp outnumbered. one deputy was injured when he tried to take action. oakland police tell us they have enough to keep any sideshows from developing this weekend. opd on the ground also will get support in the air and from other police departments throughout the east bay. now to a frightening scene in seattle after a freak construction accident killed four people yesterday. a crane on top of an office building collapsed onto traffic in one of seattle's busiest intersections. it happened 3:30 at the site of a new google campus. part of the crane came down on lanes of traffic. three more victims are still in the hospital. witnesses say wind could have

been a factor. seattle is undergoing a tech move of sorts and have several construction cranes working across their city. >> now onto decision 2020. beto o'rourke will be in the bay area today. the presidential candidate will hold a townhall in san francisco. doors open at 11:15 this morning. it's all part of o'rourke's swing four days long through california. he kicked it off earlier yesterday in los angeles. a shoutout from president trump to the newest 49ers star. he congratulated nick poe sa on being number two in the nfl draft. he said bosa will be a great player for years to come, maybe even one of the best. the president encouraged bosa to stay true to himself. though some 49ers fans are thrilled to have him on the

>> hi. great to be with you guys. thanks for having me. >> big fan here. the u.s. attorney general bill barr will testify before congress wednesday and thursday of this week. the trump administration has stated they are not going to cooperate with congressional subpoenas. what do you think we can expect from both the white house and from barr's testimony this week? >> this is shaping up, kira, as a real fight between the white house and congress. the president says the investigation is over. case closed. and of course congress, the democrats, want to ask for about the redacted portions. they want to get questioned from the players and the attorney general. evening today, kira, exclusively, we are reporting that the justice department is signaling to the house side, to the democrats they're not sure they're going to let the attorney general testify because they don't like some of the conditions that the democratic committee is putting on his testimony. so this is not going to get resolved. >> we will have to wait and see what happens then. >> new topic, andrea.

with joe biden now officially in the race from democratic presidential nomination, which candidates do you think stand to lose ground or perhaps benefit? >> well, i think it's going to shape up at least at the start between joe biden and bernie sanders. bernie sanders has a lot more money and has more youthful followers than joe biden even though he is a year older than biden. they are really competing for some of the same voters in the rust belt, in those states where bernie sanders did very well and where obviously president trump did very well. and sanders has enough money to stay in the race until the bitter end. he's been raising money hand over first. biden did well in fund-raising in the first 24 hours, $6.3 million. i think as we go forward, it could be that some of the women candidates who are not getting as much attention as they should be getting may lose ground because of biden's interests.

>> a follow-up here. biden's video focused on the need to replace president trump. did he miss an opportunity to separate himself from sanders and others with what people see as a general election strategy? >> he thinks the general election strategy, according to his advisers, is to go after president trump head-on on character. this is not the america that you people want, that we knew. and this president is an aberration in american politics. he has not figured out how to deal with the primary election, where he is not as progressive as some of the more popular candidates already in. he doesn't want to attack them. >> very interesting insight. a pleasure to meet you this morning. thanks so much for joining us. >> thank you. and we hope you will join

office for her. an 11 week-old-daughter allowing many to bring 6-week to 6-month-old babies to the office. >> it makes me very happy having her around. >> reporter: for the health department worker, it made it much easier to get back to work. >> it cuts down on a lot of the stress that parents have. >> reporter: christopher caine brings his son to the office. >> it has allowed my wife and i to continue thinking about our careers as well as prioritizing him. >> reporter: vermont is one of six states to allow state employees to bring babies into the workplace. >> this program is an option to do something a little different, which is to come back to work a little sooner, continue the bonding process and tomorrow your career. >> reporter: babies can't cause prolonged distractions. anyone who wants to work away from the infant is moved. heather has designated a co-worker as an emergency

caregiver. but she has found no shortage of helpers. >> i think they are looking for excuses at this point to cover over and get some cuddle time. >> reporter: a program still in its infancy so far finding a lot of big and little fans. kristen dahlgren, nbc news, white river junction, vermont. >> if you are wonder about here in california, a bill is being considered to allow a similar program. all right. let's check in with vianey arana with our sunday forecast. it would be distracting to have a baby off on the side here in the background. >> i would love it. i would incorporate her into the forecast. take the baby on a stroll. i have done it with my dog before when i worked at a station in el paso. i loved it. clouds are rolling through. it makes for a very beautiful sight. look how cloudy it looks.

don't worry, though. the marine layer will help keep our temperatures cool. if you have been enjoying the comfortable weather, it will be a cooler day today compared to yesterday. we have fog rolling through santa rosa, hayward, half moon bay, santa cruz mountains as well. it will be slow to burn off. expect to keep cloudy conditions the majority of the day with filtered sunshine in between into the afternoon. right now the temperatures are in the 40s and low 50s. 50 in san jose. keep in mind we will eventually be climbing into the low 60s for san francisco. and low 70s for the south bay. also, it's going to be breezy once again today in through oakland, 66 degrees. up through napa, 72. if you're heading anywhere near the water, the peninsula, keep in mind it will be breezy. let's talk about your hour-by-hour outlook. we will get a period of partial clearing into the afternoon. i want to turn your attention south of us near monterey, driving down to southern

california. we have two storms inching by, systems nearby, i should say. that will bring the chance of drizzle and light showers for far monterey county. bay area, we're not too concerned about it. we're not going to see much in the way of the storm. coastal low clouds in the 70s inland will remain through tomorrow. tomorrow more patchy fog on your early morning drive as well. 70s inland will remain in the area. as we head towards the middle of the week into maybe wednesday and thursday, we begin to see high pressure rebuilding back into the bay area. what that does is warms us back up. it clears out all the cloud cover, which means the return of sunshine. just looking ahead into next week. by saturday, sunday, monday, we have a bit of a system nearby. right now the models are kind of conflicting, not showing anything by much on f rain. we will keep a close eye on that. we took out the rain chances

open. but some kids never get that celebration. garvin thomas introduces to a bay area teenager making sure no one is left behind on their special day. >> celebrating her birthday with a big party was such a given for her growing up, it didn't occur to her it wasn't that way for everyone. until one day she realized it wasn't. at first she got sad. then she went into action. >> this is the each individual birthday gifts. >> if you were to watch her age by the number of birthday parties she's had, you'd come up with 16. >> we have the head band. >> but if you were to measure her kindness by the number of parties she has thrown, well, that number would be almost twice as big. >> i think approximately 30 birthdays so far. >> the reason why begins when she was much younger. say 5 birthday parties old. they would go to a local homeless shelter to serve

breakfast. she couldn't do much of the work so she would play and talk with the children there. one memory in particular sticks out. >> my birthday was coming up. and i get really excited about it. i think about my birthday party. but i used to hang out with the kids and eating breakfast there. one time i said when is your birthday party coming up? and they don't really respond. >> she understood that their lives and hers were quite different. >> i don't think they even knew what a birthday party was. they probably knew what their birthday was. but a birthday party. it's the whole experience. it's not just a piece of cake. it's not just one present. it's the whole thing. >> an experience she wantsed to share. and that is how no birthday left behind started. she now works with five different shelters hosting parties for children who have birthdays that month. this party at life moves in san

jose complete with craft and easter egg hunting and even a magician for a 2-year-old girl. >> it's a heart warming experience. and i love just spending time playing with kids. i get so many joy out of it. seeing a kid smile, it makes me really, really happy. >> she only wishes she had more money and more help to throw more parties. and bring more joy to a child on the one day he or she deserves it the most. >> it makes me so happy that i can do something so small but make such a big difference in their lives. >> she said it is a lot of work, not just preparing for the party but lining up vendors to donate cake, pizza and entertainment. she does as much as she can. ultimately one day she would love to see a no birthday left behind chapter in every city around the country.

also tweeted that he condemns the attack. the fbi has opened a federal hate crime investigation into the driver who plowed into a crowd of people in sunnyvale. the 34-year-old army vet is accused of driving into a crowd of people tuesday night. eight people were injured, including children and adults. a isaiah peoples is his name. he allegedly ran over the people because he thought some of them were muslim. the bay area chapter of the council on american-islamic relations tells us they welcome the hate crime investigation. crews are working feverishly to salvage the notre dame cathedral in paris. authorities are right now racing against time to prevent any further damage ahead of storms expected to hit paris this week. some of notre dame's remaining statues were removed by crane before the tarps were installed. this of course in the wake of the massive fire that destroyed the cathedral's roof two weeks

ago tomorrow. the cathedral isn't expected to reopen to the public for five or six years. now to a serious risk we have all heard about by now that comes with playing sports. suffering a concussion. former 49ers quarterback steve young joined a concussion summit at stanford. christie smith was there and has this story. >> i never believed i was knocked out. >> reporter: hall of fame quarterback steve young shared stories from the football field, his concussions and the medical decisions that followed. >> 1998, it was, you know, the whole country was kind of worried about concussions. so i was at the forefront of it. >> reporter: the quarterback kept track of advances in new technology. he wants families to know the risks and to be informed. organizers say today's advance is a big step forward. >> unifying the researchers

>> christie smith, nbc bay area news. a couple of bus routes in the bay area might be getting the axe. golden gate transit is considering changes. route 44 from marin woods to san francisco, and the sleepy holly section of route 27 could be cut because of low ridership. route 44 is in the district's 20-passenger per trip standard isn't being met. if asked, the district might beef up other routes by boosting frequency and adding express routes. golden gate bridge district will hold the future of these routes in june. cal train is planning to take a sales tax to voters in the three bay area cities where it runs. the 1/8 would go on the 2020 ballot. it is in addition to the mega wide measure for transportation. the board of directors is expected to hammer out details

may 2nd this week. so far the tax will span 30 years and provide between $100 million and $200 million annually. now to apple. it is making it harder to limit iphone screen time according to analysis by the "new york times" and the app data firm sensor tower. the past year, apple has removed or restricted at least 11 of the most downloaded screen time and parental patrol apps and tightened controls on lesser-known apps. in some cases apple forced companies to remove control features. in others, they simply pulled the apps from their store. apple is responding by saying it treats all apps the same and it is simply trying to provide the highest quality apps to customers. still ahead on "today in the bay", 7:38. presidential candidate beto o'rourke makes a stop in the bay

nbc bay area political analyst larry gerson rejoins us to discuss updates that have happened the last week in the presidential race. a lot of people still aren't familiar with o'rourke. what do we know about him so far? >> as you said in the intro, he's relatively young. 48 years old. that's young when you are talking about the presidency. he's a revered fund-raiser. i'm telling you, he's killer on that stuff. o'rourke collected an astounding $79 million in campaign contributions from a huge base of supporters. californians were one-fourth of his contributors. he has a base here of sorts. that said, he's in the second year tier of a very, very crowded group of candidates. >> where does he stand on the

issues, if you can briefly summari summarize. >> regarding gun control, he's come out for universal background checks. not nearly as ambitious as other democratic candidates. he has advocated health care for all and support for dealing with climate change but short on specifics. he's showing willingness to work on serious issues and refused to support nancy pelosi as the house leader in 2016. so a cent terrorist. >> not to take away from him but i'm going to take away from him now. o'rourke isn't the only democratic candidate who made headlines. it was perhaps the worst kept secret in politics. joe biden announced his candidacy for the nomination. how do you think adding his hat

into the ring affects the democratic landscape? >> potentially a lot. 800 pound gorilla getting into the groove so to speak the past year. the worst kept secret. biden favored at most democratic, hovering 30% in a very crowded field. bernie sanders has been at it a long time. he comes in second, in the low 20s. it's early, very early. and the voters may move in other directions over time. as the former vice president to the popular barack obama, biden brings a lot of clout. we saw as much by biden's ability to raise $6 million within 24 hours. he is in the game. >> the most raised in 24 hours. there are other people very close. what do you see as biden's strengths and weaknesses? >> let's remember, he's not only the former vice president.

that's enough in itself. but he was a u.s. senator for 35 years. given his experience, biden is so comfortable with just about every aspect of the american presidency. he's running out against other democrats. in his words, as the only person who can beat donald trump. that said, biden has some weaknesses. he failed to gain much traction. because of his long tenure in office, biden will have to explain some of his votes. while popular decades ago wouldn't be so popular now. so in addition if elected he would be the oldest president at a time when democrats such as beto o'rourke believe it is time to turn that page and look to younger candidates. >> yeah. so now we eventually -- you were talking to me about this on the commercial break. 20 presidential candidates and the possibility of six more announcing their candidacy in the next few weeks. what do you see as major challenges coming up? >> a couple things to remember.

first, the winning nominee has to find the right tone on key problems such as health care, immigration, taxes and other hot-button issues. no the too hot, not too cold. most likely he or she will lean to the left. the question is how far. second, the nominee must be adept at retail politics, particularly in the first four stage. iowa, new hampshire, sbging is, nevada. that includes diners, living rooms, high schools, elevators. anyplace where he or she can make their case face-to-face. third, the eventual nominee must be able to raise vast amounts of money as an indication of his or her popularity. fourth, and i think most important, the candidate who prevails for the democrats must be able to bring together the clinton and sanders wings of the democratic party, which remain at war to this day. without that success, the democrats are going to be in trouble. >> we still have a long way to go. >> oh, yeah. >> as always, larry, thanks.

good morning. it's 7:53 on a cloudy sunday. our temperatures will be comfort wil comfortable. low clouds and marine layer around the coastline. that's what is kind of keeping our temperatures a little cooler this afternoon. half moon bay seeing fog. santa cruz mountains as well. a couple spots in hayward and livermo

livermore. upper 40s in santa rosa. 49 degrees. 51 in san jose. but as we head towards the afternoon, we will continue to see those breezy conditions. our temperatures will be topping out in the low 60s for san francisco. 63 degrees. 66 for oakland. we've got low 70s down through palo alto, 71. san jose, 73. we will be running a few degrees cooler than yesterday, which will put our daytime highs below seasonable. your hour-by-hour outlook. all thanks to a system that is nearby. two systems nearby. we're not expecting any rain from this. as a matter of fact, you can see that system is really far down to the south. so moderate coastal mountains might get a shower or two. because of the moisture nearby we might have drizzle along the coastline. the rain stays south of us. it doesn't really affect our rain chances as much into today and tomorrow. let's take a look at the long range outlook. we are expecting to keep the marine layer and low clouds

through tomorrow morning. you might catch early morning fog. i want to show you the coastal low clouds. temperatures in the 70s. again, we will remain on the cooler side in through tuesday. by wednesday and thursday, we begin to see this ridge of high pressure start to build back in. it's not going to be as strong as the upper 80s and 90s in the bay area. it will be just enough to make us climb into upper 70s and possibly low 80s for the interior valleys. friday and saturday, a low pressure system that seems to be kind of inching nearby. as of right now, it's too early to call it rain. we took the rain chances out of the seven-day forecast as our models aren't aligning. as we inch closer, we might get a better day. monday and tuesday, low 60s in san francisco. building high pressure in through wednesday, thursday, friday or our temperatures to go up just a bit. if you notice on the icons, at least we will be dry and more seasonable wednesday and thursday with overnight lows still in the 50s. we get cloud cover that remains.

it's going to really be a week of a combination of sun and clouds. i finally want to get a car wash this week. it is shining bright. i knew the forecast was calling for dry, sunny weather. it was cloudy. at least you don't have to worry about the rain. so car washes will be very busy this week as we expect the 70s to really linger. i enjoy upper 70s. i don't have to turn on the ac. it is a comfortable balance between spring and summer. >> in i don't have ac, so i prefer 70s as well. vianey, thanks. vianey has seen this movie. have you seen it? >> no spoilers. >> "avengers endgame" is raking in serious cash. it is on track to earn a billion dollars by the time the weekend ends. as of this morning, worldwide box office sales total $643 million. the first to gross $140 million in a single day in north america. keep in mind, it only opened to the general public thursday night. wow.
