70 in livermore. palo alto, a high of 70. daly city in the 50s. clouds and fog will keep san francisco cool and breezy today. and the north bay reaching into the upper 60s and low 70s. looks really nice. a warmup in our forecast. mike, you have a poorly lit look at san jose. >> i do. as we turn the lights way down, all the headlights coming toward us. i had to see whether this report was accurate. it is. there is a disabled vehicle on the shoulder just after 101 and 680 overhead interchange. you see very little slowing. folks able to get by just fine. there you go. very accurate report from chp. no problems heading north or west, which is basically our commute direction for all of your entire bay. everything is moving smoothly right now. back to you stkpwhraofplt thanks, mike. on capitol hill, president trump and top democrats chuck schumer and nancy pelosi will meet at the white house. you might recall last time there

were fireworks in front of the come. tracie potts joins us live. the big question, will they be able to put some of this feuding aside and actually get something done? >> reporter: exactly. as congress continues to investigate russia and the president's business and his taxes, will any of that come up, or will they stick to the issue at hand, infrastructure, the roads you drive on, airports you use, even technology. there has been an agreement between democrats and republicans that they want to pour federal money into that, but how much. they are lying out priorities in a letter. the president says he's open to ideas. and they are both hoping, or at least the nation is hoping this doesn't devolve like the last one did. >> i will shut down the government. >> okay. >> and i am proud.

>> this is spiraling downward. >> tracie, switching gears just a bit. >> reporter: that was the last time -- >> go ahead. go ahead. >> reporter: i was just going to say briefly, laura, that was the last time they met in december, and it was right before the government shut down. >> exactly. switching gears since we have you, what are the new asylum changes that the president is introducing? >> reporter: right. i know this is a big deal in the bay area because of the issues with sanctuary cities and the president wanting to move people seeking asylum to sanctuary cities. well, now he is directing attorney general and homeland security to make changes. first of all, they want to charge people to come into this country and seek asylum, an application fee. they haven't said it would be. they said it won't be for whatever the processing cost for processing the application is. 90 days is what the president is

giving. they are making sure they are processed within 180 days or six months. also, he would not allow work permits for anyone who entered the country illegally or tried to and got caught. >> very interesting. all things washington. you always know for us. thank you, tracie. 5:04 right now. the ghost ship tragedy continues to haunt the bay area. families of the 36 victims will continue on their road to closure. later this morning, we expect to hear the opening statements in the trial of the two accused in the deadly "ghost ship" fire in oakland. "today in the bay" bob redell joining us live. bob, what can you tell us about the jury? >> reporter: well, marcus, the jury was seated yesterday. tony serra is the lawyer who represents derrick almena. he calls it a rainbow jury because it is so diverse. nine women, three men ranging in ages from their 20s, into their

60s. a mix of blue and white collar workers. serra thinks that will benefit his client. he expects the trial to last two to three months. he expects almena to take the stand in june. they each face 30 koupbs of involuntary manslaughter. the fire trapped and killed a number of people there for a dance party. prosecutors said almena rented the warehouse and illegally turned it into a living space for artists and entertainment venue. the defense lawyers argue that the landlord and city of oakland officials are to blame for failing to ensure the building met safety codes. last year both men agreed to plea no contest. they would have served nine years for almena, harris six.

both men now face a max numb sentence of life in prison if convicted on all 36 counts. again, all 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay". >> a lot of people across the country will be watching this one, bob. thank you. >> in the north bay, a lot of people wondering will pg&e compensate wildfire victims or establish a temporary housing assistance fund. the utility says it doesn't know yet. pg&e is being blamed for sparking the fire. 86 people died and 10,000 homes destroyed. pg&e filed for bankruptcy protection in january after being hit by a number of lawsuits. amid the fallout from the deadly fires, marin county grand jury is calling for a new wildfire tax and agency. it suggests a quarter cent sales tax to helped preparedness efforts. they are making the

recommendations in a new key report. others include vegetation management plan. 5:06. governor newsom wants to be protect your water from climate change. he just signed an executive order asking administration to come up with a climate resilient water system. several agencies plan to look at ways to ensure safe water supplies, flood protection, and healthy waterways. it comes as california was able to shake free of a seven-year-long drought this year. 5:07 right now. we all know that the bay area economy is booming, but it's really becoming a bust for small business owners now struggling to survive. >> it's tough. we are talking about a double-edged sword. pete suratos will show us just one example of a lingering problem across the bay. pete? >> reporter: yeah. good morning to you, laura and marcus. yeah, one of those examples is

borderland cafe. you can see we're standing here. the owner put up a note saying it's closing later today after being in a decade in business here in san francisco. ironically it claims it is the booming economy, low unemployment rate lead to go better-paying jobs. over the past couple of years he has been down one, sometimes two to three people when it comes to employees. he believes the better-paying jobs are easier than his line of working, working at a coffee shop. some of his regular customers aren't too thrilled about the coffee store closing up shop. >> i don't want to be the old occur phupblg on who doesn't want things to change. but san francisco is such a special, beautiful city. and to see it becoming like every other american city is -- it's heartbreaking. because it has a soul. it feels like its soul is being completely eye certained by the

economy and technology. >> reporter: i want to give viewers a better specialty. when it comes to better-paying jobs. as of july 1st, 2019, minimum wage is set to be $15.59. if you work part-time or temp work, you can be paid no less than $15 per hour. and on rentcafe.com, i want to talk about average rents in the bay area. as expected, some of the highest in the country with san francisco at just over $3,600 a month. san jose, $2,700 a month. oakland at $2,6884. live to the bookstore with bo t borderlands cafe. even though the cafe is closing, the bookstore will remain open. live in san francisco, pete suratos, "today in the bay". >> tough times. >> you never think about the small businesses.

>> with minimum wage going up, they have to adjust. >> thanks, pete. let's check in with kari. a cool start to our tuesday morning. a nice afternoon expected? >> yeah. we will warm up. it will be a nice day. starting out with temperatures in the low to mid-50s as you get ready to head out the door. expect it to be partly cloudy, in the mid-50s. 9:00, 58 degrees. and there will be a lot of sunshine as we go throughout the day. once the early morning fog and clouds clear, heading up to 70 in livermore. 70 in san jose and palo alto. upper 60s in much of the north bay with antioch today reaching 71 degrees. we'll talk about what's ahead as we warm up. mike, you're checking on one of our longer commutes. >> i am, kari. most of the commute along the water vemoving very smoothly. 205, 580, past where it merges,

right now at 5:14, we're starting out with mid-50s. campbell, 55 degrees. now, we're going to keep those temperatures slightly cooler than our normal high of 72. upper 60s with sunshine. very nice. but we will be heating up as we go through the week. we'll talk about that coming up in less than five minutes. >> also in san jose, 101. a disabled vehicle. someone was stopped. there was a conversation. the car still there. that person no longer waiting

there. we will watch as anything happens in the area. the commute starts to build coming up. and very happy tuesday to you. apple reports profits today. a big miss for alphabet. i'll get to that one in a moment. boeing now says it made a mistake with its software in its 737 max 8s. turning off a safety feature that was supposed to come standard with every new plane. a warning system that alerted pilots the sensors were getting faulty data. wall street journal says the safety alerts were turned off in every southwest airlines max 8 even though they were supposed to be turned on. support for stephen moore as fed governor is fading. we have talked in the past about his failure to pay alimoniy, taxes, some of his past writings. someone found an old clip from c-span, a call-in show where the caller is worried a women in his

family make too much money. here's moore's response. >> it's not a good thing that black women are making more than black men today. in fact, you know, the male needs to be the bread winner of the family. and one of the reasons you've seen the decline in the family not just in the black community but also it's happening now in the white community as well is because women are more economically self-sufficient. >> stephen moore, candidate for fed governor. mentioned google off the top. shares in alphabet will pull the whole nasdaq lower today. the company missed profit estimates. one interesting bit, alphabet added 18,000 full-time employees, bringing it under 100,000 for the first time. that's just full-time workers, not including contract workers. and robotic company anki getting rid of all of its workers. the san francisco company will layoff everybody after it failed

to get another round of funding. about 200 people will lose their jobs. you know, we talk about companies that are not making profits yet. they're still working at it. well, they are being funded by venture capital. >> right. >> the minute the funding runs out, it's over. there is no money left. >> exactly. all right. thanks so much, scott. 5:17. privacy expected to take center stage when facebook's developer's conference kicks off today. the social network admitted its employees could have accessed passwords from hundreds of millions of users. this year's conference will include improved security on messaging app. the event is in san jose, lasts two days. more than 5,000 developers from around the world are expected to attend. >> does the amount of money on mother's day amount to how much you love your mom? i'm going to say no.

many americans believe so. the national retail federation estimates that mother's day spending will hit $25 billion. this is up from $23 billion last year. it works out to roughly $196 per person. top gifts include jewelry, special outings, gift cards, flowers and electronics. okay. well, since you're not a mom, ask kari what she thinks. >> the more you spend the more you love? >> yeah, you know, sometimes it's the priceless things are the things that you make. >> no, no. it's $196. >> i'm still my mom's baby. >> yeah. it's time to start making the plans for mother's day. we start out this morning with clear conditions. a live look at dublin. already a lot of people up and out the door. here's a look at the seven-day forecast. it's already at the bottom of

the screen. we check out our highs for today around the bay area. really doesn't get any better than that. highs in the low 70s. 70 in livermore, san jose and palo alto. up to 66 in oakland. 68 today in santa rosrosa. if you're going to the warriors game tonight, lucky you. we will have temperatures that will be nice and cool heading into oracle arena. tonight it cools off into the mid-50s. at the dodgers versus the giants game, first pitch 6:45. the traffic is going to be a mess at that time. we will see the temperatures in the mid-50s around first pitch. a system bringing snow into sierra. but mostly rain below 6,000 feet. then we go through the rest of

the forecast with it clearing out there. just watching out for that. and we are still talking about the sierra snowpack that still looks pretty amazing. right now the average is still 143% of normal across the whole sierra with the central sierra at 145% of normal. a little bit more snow doesn't hurt. we will see the temperatures here in the bay area inland reaching into the low to mid-70s the next couple of days. heating up by the end of the week. cooling down by sunday. we will be watching a new storm system maybe just to our south but could bring us more clouds and cooler temperatures. we're all clear for the commute now? >> as far as the chp blotter is concerned, they have a few construction crews out there. all lanes are clear as far as the freeways go. that's a good flow as you see from the green here. a little change there. bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights ready to turn on.

they are saying they are war memorials and cannot be removed by the city without permission from the state. it stems against a lawsuit against current and former city council members who refused to remove the statute choose. both sides expected abouting in court tomorrow. a historic moment unfolds in japan where a new ruler will soon take the throne. the emperor is stepping down. 300 people attended today's ceremony for the emperor. tomorrow his son "the crown" prince will assume the throne taking over as japan's symbolic leader. a follow-up. a group of puppies found in a trash can will be up for adoption. it's a story we first told you about last week on "today in the bay". a woman threw the little puppies

just into the dump sstedumpster. they were found in the city of coachella. a homeless man heard the puppies crying. all seven of the puppies, look at them, now looking for new homes. the woman, they caught her, she was arrested. >> why would she do that? >> animal cruelty. so many people would take them. 5:26 for you. laura, you probably have some attachment to this story just a little bit here. we're talking about triplets here. maybe yours are too young to think about this. have you started to think about college entrance exams? >> every day. because i'm trying to figure out how i'm going to pay for it. stresses me out. a set of triplets in illinois just earned perfect scores on the a.c.t.s. they scored a combined 106 on the standardized tests. the sisters are among the highest scoring triplets in the

70, palo alto. today in napa, 69 degrees. we'll look at all our microclimates coming up. mike, you have reports for two bridges. >> still watching them all. the metering lights are on on the bay bridge. that's twice as much traffic as we looked 10, 12 minutes ago. the approach smooth. slowing for vallejo. slowing through pittsburg, bay point for highway 4 and across the castro valley y. a little build. there is a report of debris. more detail from chp and i will bring that coming up. thanks so much. depending where you live you might be ale to hear side shows squealing in the distance. san jose city wants to crack down on spectators. kris sanchez joins us live from city hall this morning to talk a little bit about the action they want to take.

kris? >> reporter: hi there, laura. the city wants to crackdown on anybody who wants to even watch a side show, especially with they are helping to make the side show possible by blocking some of the roadways and publicizing the side shows on social media. look at this video here. you can see just how close some of the spectators get to the action. it is so dangerous. the drivers start spinning doughnuts, drifting and burning out. you might remember that in 2018, a person who was just walking by one of those side shows was killed by a driver. the council may beef up the current ordnance to give san jose police more enforcement power. it could be punishable by $1,000 in fines and six months in jail. it is just one strategy aimed at cracking down on side shows we are seeing around the bay area. they already write tickets to spectators and drivers like this one busted on diablo road this

week. they will increase staffing to deal with recent crowds that sometimes number in the thousands. oakland police are working with chp, alameda county sheriff, hayward police whenever they hear there could be a side show in the works. as we first reported to you here on "today in the bay" a few months back, contra costa road team added these road bumps to make excessive speed unpleasant and potentially damage to go a driver's car. they will take issue this afternoon. let's continue on facebook and twitter. i will be posting about that this morning. san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay". kris, thank you. 5:33. new, the family of the man accused of planning multiple terror attacks in los angeles is speaking out. they say they are surprised by the arrest of army veteran mark stevens domingo. he was taken into custody after contacting an undercover agent and receiving what he thought was a live bomb.

it was all part of an fbi sting. federal prosecutors say domingo converted to islam and was planning vengeance for last month's deadly mosque shootings in new zealand. his family is asking for privacy in the wake of his arrest. friends and family holding out hope for the 13-year-old girl seriously injured in last week's apparent hate crime in sunnyvale. it happened when a man drove his car into a group of people. authorities believe he may have -- they may have been targeted because the suspect assumed they were muslim. the 13-year-old girl is in a coma. friends started a go fund me campaign to help with medical bills. a new reward for a san francisco cold case at the time being lost in the shadows of the high-profile laci peterson case. both cases similar. the mayor's office is offering $100,000 reward to solve the case of 6th lessen hernandez and

her son. authorities found parts of her body. her 5-year-old son alex disappeared and has never been seen since. leaders repaired the problem water systems and installed hydrati hydration. a sugary drinks tax voters approved in 2016. a large job fair at san jose city college comes with a bit of controversy. the group "work to future" will include dozens of companies and agencies but school leaders say

the booth set aside for u.s. customs and border protection won't be there. the agency was disinvited oefr concerns from consumer leaders. >> around the issue of immigration, with border patrol and enforcement, that's just not something we're comfortable with bringing them to our campus. >> reps did they they never had any intentions to conduct law enforcement activities. they simply wanted to inform students about possible career opportunities. the fight between local communities and advocacy group over housing comes to the east bay tonight. danville is hosting a town hill over the compact. the group is pushing state lawmakers to make sweeping changes when it comes to housing in the bay area. including an emergency cap on rent. danville is among the many places where they say too many restrictions are placed on future housing projects. it begins 6:30 tonight at the

few minutes. we will watch as it happens out on the roadways. thanks so much, kari and mike. it is 5:43. the man accused of attacking a san diego county synagogue expected in court this morning. 19-year-old john ernest allegedly killed a woman and shot three other people saturday. police say he shot at the synagogue's members with a semiautomatic rifle. the fbi said ernest posted an anti sphepl it and anti-muslim letter online moments before the aing ta. he was inspired by attack on houses of worship in new zealand and pittsburgh. hundreds of people gathered at a high school near san diego last night to honor the victims. in the wake of the shooting, governor newsom has vowed to spend $15 million to protest so-called soft targets like synagogues. the governor will include the money in his general fund budget proposal. >> this morning the names of sacramento priests accused of

sexual abuse are being released. a total of 44 on the list being revealed by the click diocese of sacramento. it stretches from vallejo to the oregon border. priests are accused of abusing roughly 130 victims. this comes weeks after a report had listed 200 clergy members accused of sex abuse here in the bay area. . changes are coming to tsa screenings at several airports, including lax. tsa is adding a privacy filter to the device which is required under law. it creates a fuzzy green image with a dark outline of potential weapons or explosives hidden under their clothing. in 2013, tsa removed 200 after protests because they were using low levels of radiation to create resemblances of nude images.

so we're starting out with some nice weather. we are seeing low clouds as we take a live look outside over emeryville, looking across the bay bridge into san francisco. clouds are going to keep it cool as we go throughout the day. 54 degrees in half moon bay. 54, san jose. seeing pretty much the same temperatures all around the bay area as you head out. looking at low clouds in concord. starting out in the mid-50s. slow to warm up today. but we will get some sunshine. it will be a nice afternoon. eventually reaching 71 degrees there. and 70 in livermore. 69 in napa and san francisco reaching 62 degrees. as you check out the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, you'll see we will have a little bit of a warmup going toward the end of the week. as we take a live look at the sap center in san jose. we will have a nice one. but we do start out with cool temperatures. grab a sweater or light jacket
