"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm marlie hall. >> great being with you. i'm frances rivera. attorney general william barr is in the hot seat today amid growing calls for impeachment from democrats. he is scheduled to testify before the senate judiciary committee, who is sure to have plenty of questions after this breaking news overnight. robert mueller himself was reportedly frustrated with barr's brief summary of the special counsel's findings. mueller reportedly wrote a letter to barr in late march, objecting to how his team's work was portrayed, saying that it didn't capture the context and substance of the full report. nbc's tracie potts joins us with the latest from d.c. tracie, barr's four-page memo here led to president trump as we all know claiming total

exoneration. >> reporter: exactly, frances, which wasn't because there was this question about obstruction of justice that was laid out by the mueller team, but then barr decided not to pursue it, and that is part of what his testimony before the senate judiciary committee will be about. explaining why he decided not to pursue it. but this breaking news overnight is significant because it shows that there was concern by mueller and his team before barr came to testify a couple weeks later here on capitol hill. and now democrats are claiming that he committed perjury in that testimony, that he should either resign or be impeached because of what he said about mueller and his support of the summary, the four-page summary, that was given to congress. this is what barr said when he testified on april 10th. >> did bob mueller support your conclusion? >> i don't know whether bob mueller supported my conclusion. >> reporter: well, if, in fact,

as "the washington post" is reporting, he had a conversation with mueller and received this letter outlining the objections that mueller had, then there are a lot of questions to answer during his testimony today about why he said he didn't know if mueller supported his conclusions. so we'll continue to follow up on that. but bottom line, there are going to be some tough questions from democrats, especially, and maybe from some republicans who want him to explain the disconnect between having received this letter and then testifying that he didn't know that mueller had objections to his summary. >> we may have more questions even after that report is released hopefully at 10:00 this morning. thank you. now to breaking news in north carolina where a gunman is in police custody after a shooting at the unc charlotte campus left two people dead and several others in critical condition. students are speaking out about the chaotic moments on campus. >> when i was in the library i

was on the second floor. all of a sudden, someone ran in, yelled there's an active shooter, get down. it was chaotic in the library. i guess nowhere to go. people were just running. >> officials say police responded within minutes and one officer immediately went to the suspect to take him down. hip-hop artist walk ca flakka flame had been scheduled to give a free concert at the school. the concert was canceled but the rapper let fans now he's safe. we go to our reporter in charlotte. >> reporter: it was more than five hours after the shooting before charlotte mecklenburg police identified the lone shooter as 22-year-old trystan terre terrell. homicide detectives spent hours interviewing him. "i shot the guy." this man appeared to shout those words as officers brought him into headquarters almost two hours after campus police said a lorne gunman with a pistol shot several students.

despite his outburst here, chief jeff baker said the unnamed suspect didn't utter a word once police took him into custody, a man police aren't ready to release details about just yet, only telling us this. >> he is not somebody on our radar. >> reporter: a police source identified the suspect as 22-year-old trystan andrew terrell. a source confirmed he was a former student, a historyñ2hsp% who dropped out earlier this semester. the federal bureau of investigation has offered to help in this case as well. we are told charges are pending against terrell. >> nate, thank you. now to chaos in venezuela as streets erupted in violence after u.s.-backed opposition leader juan guaido called for an uprising against president nicolas maduro. heeding his call, anti-government protesters faced off with police in brutal clashes. a crowd of about 2,000 people got teargassed and some people were run over by armored vehicles. meanwhile, the u.s. learned that nicolas maduro was ready to leave the country amid the

violence. >> we literally nicolas maduro getting prepared to get on his airplane and head out of the country before he was stopped really at the direction of the russians. >> maduro denies those claims. kerry sanders as the latest details and smome of the disturbing images. >> reporter: frances, this is day two now of the uprising. it's unclear whether those protesters will take to the streets again today. this as the world watches. protesters against venezuela's president, nicolas maduro, taking to the streets, calling for freedom. the country's military loyal to maduro responding with brutal force, including tear gas, bullets, and this national guard truck crossing a median, driving right into protesters, mowing down more than a dozen. it started early, flanked by what appeared to be uniformed members of the country's

military, opposition leader juan guaido calling on his supporters to take to the streets, saying, today the armed forces are clearly on our side. they are lsp& to the constitution, loyal to the venezuelan people. but it's unclear if guaido, who is viewed as the legitimate leader of venezuela by more than 50 countries including the united states, is actually getting widespread support from the military. these officers publicly backing maduro. and at maduro's government headquarters, crowds gathered in support of the current socialist government. but as we found recently, many in venezuela are barely surviving, eating food out of dumpsters. the nation's water supply erratic. simple medicines nowhere to be found. and at this hospital, we discovered children in kidney failure, some dying due to a lack of medical supplies.

home. minutes later, she apparently went outside to help. instead, she was fatally shot. >> shots fired. >> reporter: over two days of tearful testimony, 33-year-old nuar told jurors he made the split second decision to pull the trigger when damond, wearing a pink shirt, approached their car in the dark. he said, i fired once. the threat took a couple steps back. did you just say the threat took a couple steps back? yes. the whole blond hair, pink t-shirt and all, is a threat to you? his attorney said he did what he was trained to do. we have a tragedy, but what we don't have is a crime. prosecutors disagree. he knew exactly what he was doing. he pointed, he aimed, and he killed her. after two years, a jury's decision comes in less than two days of deliberations. kevin tibbles, nbc news. let's turn to the millions of people at risk for flooding and severe weather. here's bill karins. good morning.

>> good morning. the threat continues. the tornado threat is ending but the flash flooding continues. flash flooding kills more people every year than tornadoes. as far as the flash flood warnings go right now, a couple in oklahoma, one in arkansas, missouri, illinois, even one near detroit this morning. 31 million people are in the flash flood watch. we have a lot of heavy rain to go. the worth of it looks to be in areas of oklahoma, arkansas, and right through the heart of texas. we could see an additional one to three inches, maybe as high as four inches of rain. on top of that, more severe weather to deal with, about 14 million pele are in thisop yesterday. yesterday was a little mini outbreak. look how chilly those temperatures are still in the northern plains. with all the active weather going on, we haven't talked much
