5:00 am
the forecast. you're following a crash and truck fire. >> i am. i'm following typical construction crews moving through palo alto. you see a little slowing on that side of the bay. nothing unusual there. in fremont we have an updated location. truck fire northbound 880. a u-haul box truck. no injuries reported. that is just before you get to the thornton avenue off-ramp. that is where they have the u-haul return. so someone has to pay a little fee probably. fremont around washington, i will track that. more details coming up. pack to you. >> 5:00 right now. breaking news out of london this morning and the sentencing of wikileaks founder julian assange to nearly one year in prison, that for skipping bail to avoid criminal charges. we have video showing his transport car arriving at the courthouse. the judge sentenced assange a short time ago. angry supporters responded by
5:01 am
chanting, shame on you to the judge. assange was charged with jumping bail in connection with sexual assault allegations in sweden and holing up for six years in the ecuadorian embassy. he received a 50-week sentence. he is still expected back in court tomorrow for u.s. extradition hearing. that is tied to charges he illegally conspired to break into pentagon computer systems. in washington, u.s. attorney general william barr is expected to testify before the senate. this comes as the washington post reports special counsel mueller wrote barr a letter saying his four-page summary did not fully capture the report. tracie potts on capitol hill with what is expected to come in the next few hours. tracie? >> reporter: marcus, good morning. what's expected to happen are a lot of pointed questions by democrats because of this breaking report overnight. and here's the problem. the last time barr was on
5:02 am
capitol hill, he testified that he didn't know if special counsel robert mueller disagreed with his assessment of the report and obstructions of justice and not pursuing charges. the post is reporting not only did mueller write a letter about it, but they had a phone conversation about it that the department of justice confirmed overnight, yes, they did talk about that. so the post is reporting one thing. he testified something that appears to be different. and now democrats are saying because of that discrepancies, they think he committed perjury. >> if he does not resign he should be facing impeachment proceedings also. >> i want him to explain his decision of the four-page letter and talk about what are the takeaways from the report. >> reporter: so he'll get a chance to explain in two hours when he shows up for that senate judiciary committee meeting. now, there's another hearing
5:03 am
tomorrow. the house controlled by democrats. but barr may be a no-show for that one. the justice department has issues with how the democrats want to do the questioning. marcus? >> a lot of people are going to be watching to see what happens with this one. tracie, as always, thank you. 5:03 for you right now. new this morning, the department of homeland security will start testing a new dna pilot program next week at the u.s./mexico border. according to cnn, the department wants to identify and prosecute people posing as family members in an effort to crackdown on human smuggling. it involves a cheek swab and takes 90 minutes to complete. an i.c.e. official said the information collected won't be stored or shared. >> also new, a proposed home for teenage victims of sexual trafficking is drawing opposition in east bay. bob redell is in oakland this morning. talk about why people are so concerned here, bob. >> reporter: laura, people who live near this proposed home are
5:04 am
worried that people who trafficked the people will come back into the neighborhoods to look for the young women they abused and bring guns, drugs, and crime. the catholic oakland diocese wants to establish this home in a sequoia neighborhood located in the foothills of oakland. it would be called claire's house, named after the district attorney nancy o'malley's late mother. it would house 12 girls age 12 to 17. it would provide schooling and mental health services. the "chronicle" is reporting the house would not provide support for contraception or abortion, which the catholic church is deeply against. this could harm children who become pregnant as a result of their abuse. they would post signs in the house on the options.
5:05 am
catholic charities said it would screen victims to make sure they are far removed from their abusers and aren't just coming off the streets. claire's house won't begin operations until it receives a care license from the state of california. reporting live in oakland, bob redell, "today in the bay". >> that's a tough one. folks are like not in my neighborhood. but those girls need help too. >> new details in the deadly shooting on the university of north carolina charlotte campus. overnight, authorities sent out the booking felt for a 22-year-old suspect tristan terrell. authorities say he was armed with a pistol when he shot six people in one classroom yesterday, killing two of them. shooting prompted a lockdown across campus on the last day of the spring term. police so far are not saying if they determined a motive. >> opening statements are expected to resume in just hours on the ghost ship warehouse fire. the high-profile trial began yesterday. each defendant, derrick almena

"today in the bay" is looking at one scooter company that is trying to use a loophole to operate. pete suratos is live with what he found. pete? >> reporter: yeah. good morning to you, marcus. that scooter company we're talking about is byrd. they will launch this monthly
5:07 am
subscription service. apparently this will work around city regulations at least for the time being. i will get to the city's response in just a moment. let's talk about the details of the service. it will be a monthly subscription. $99 a month. directly from the residence of the company. spread of being dropped off on a random street. so the customer is totally responsible for the scooter. peurd is not part of the 12-month powered scooter pilot program. that was launched, if you remember, back in october of last year. sfmta, the agency in charge of this for the city, only gave permits to the two companies. those companies are scoot and skip. they were selected after months of proposals sent to sfmta but a dozen scooter companies. this move by byrd probably comes as a surprise to city officials. we did get a chance to speak to residents about this unexpected
5:08 am
move to introduce a third scooter option to the market. >> i think that it could be a good option. it brings a lot more responsibility for the user in that if they ride somewhere, they also have to ride that same bike back to where they came from. what i like about the flexibility is i can ride one way and get home a different way. >> i feel like there is less access to people. if you get in on a month-to-month basis it takes away from the whole community thing of sharing it. >> we are showing you a statement from sfmta. this is that i got from them. "we learned about this new program on tuesday and are going to get more details to determine whether or not this program complies with existing regulations." so clearly they were blind-sided by the news as well. so we will see if other scooter
5:09 am
