welcome to "today," what a night for people in the south. severe weather is going to impact millions. large tornadoes, heavy rain, dangerous flooding. damage is there, travel problems and we have more on tap today. we'll get to al in a moment but first to gabe who is just north of dallas. >> reporter: a tornado rolled through here. thankfully no injuries but downed trees and power lines in the area. there were reports of at least 25 tornadoes across five states. this morning brutal weather has been pummelling the plains striking in arkansas and iowa. iowa battling intense flooding. 13 million people in the path of the storm. in oklahoma, this amazing drone

video tracks a funnle cloud. heavy rain causing dangerous flooding in many areas across the mississippi river. >> what we are seeing is a challenge and very devastating for people who live and work in this particular area. >> downtown inundated with water up to six-feet deep after a barrier gave way. >> it is a high-grade sand bagging process. they are up for a long period but not a permanent fix. they just wore away. >> reporter: fire crews went door to door. residents thankful for the rescues. >> thanks to daven port fire department helping us get some things out. they are doing a great job.

>> reporter: parts of texas is cleaning up, the major concern is about flooding for communities up and down the mississippi river. >> what is ahead today? mr. roker is standing by with some answers. >> more bad news. we have flood warnings in oklahoma. some of these places are seeing upwards of three inches of rain per hour. the flood watch is extending. 14 million people are at risk. tomorrow, it expands from texas to the midwest. 15 million people at risk for damaging wind, hail and tornado. tornado threat is low but we can't move it out. today, slow-moving system. this will be a slow mover. rain storms will start trailing

over these areas. scattered showers and more heavy rain. the system moves out slowly. we'll have storms with travel delays. looking at friday from texas to central arkansas. three to five inches or more. looking at denver for morning fog, austin for afternoon storms. same in forth worth. i 35, rain is going to be a problem. flooding will be an issue. we'll look at the flood threat coming up in the 8:00 hour. >> now to the panic over yet another college campus in the wake of a tragic school shooting. university of north carolina at charlotte. a gunman opened fire there. two people killed and four others injured. it could have been even worse.

we have complete coverage this morning with peter alexander. >> reporter: good morning. this is happening right now. the attorney general william barr, moments a ago arriving there. you see him there, senate democrats will be grilling open over explosive news that robert mueller sent him until what was an undisclosed letter. some are calling for barr to resign accusing him of misleading the public. >> new details about how the tight slipped robert mueller was fuming. new report that he wrote a letter objecting to the initial description of the conclusions complaining that barr's account caused public confusion. >> this letter is unquestionably a stunning rebuke of the attorney general of the united

states undermining, devastating his credibility. >> it is an outright manipulation of the report and statements by special council mueller. >> three days after barr released his summary of the findings, the special council in a letter reviewed by the "washington post" said barr's description did not fully capture the nature and substance of the report. adding there is now public confusion about aspects of the investigation. this threatens to undermine the central purpose why the special council was appointed. barr called mueller after receiving his letter. a conversation the justice department describes as cordnal and professional and mueller emphasized that nothing in the

attorney general's letter was inaccurate or misleading but he expressed frustration over the lack of context. overnight, the president's personal lawyer rudy giuliani telling me he wasn't aware of mueller's letter. saying if mueller didn't want confusion, he should have made a decision. in fact, he said to me that president was innocent. in fact barr was pressed about reaction to his letter. >> reports have emerged recently that members of the special council's team are frustrated with the limited information included in your march 24th letter, do you know what they are referencing with that? >> no, i don't. i suspect they probably wanted

more put out but in my view, i was not interested in putting out summaries. >> reporter: moments before barr arrived, we received a copy of that letter. democrats now renewing the call for mueller to testify. back to you. >> peter, thank you. >> let's turn to our justice correspondent pete williams. >> we knew some of the lawyers on mueller's team didn't like the way the attorney general described this. mueller thought this got things off on the wrong foot. now we have the full report and we can make up our own minds about whether barr's letter accurately characterized this.
